Such spacers effectively hold the strut or spring in place, but have an extremely negative effect on the performance of the suspension. When the car hits a single obstacle, the unsprung mass (wheel, hub, CV joint, ball joint and lower control arm) receives a strong vertical impulse and rushes upward. As long as the spring stiffness is less than this impulse, it compresses, due to which this impulse reaches the body extended in time, that is, smoothed out. As a result, the unsprung mass moves quickly and the body rises slowly.

In addition to the vertical impulse, the suspension also receives a horizontal impulse, which consists of several factors. First of all, this is a horizontal vector that occurs when hitting an obstacle. Secondly, the vertical vector appears as a result of load redistribution in the suspension. After all, the pendant is a triangle with changing angles and one side of variable length. One fixed side is located between the support bearing or the point of contact of the body with the spring and the silent block connecting the suspension arm to the body or beam. The second side is located between this silent block and the center of the wheel hub. And the side of variable length is formed by the center of the wheel hub and the support bearing or the point of contact between the body and the spring. Therefore, the impact on the moving side of this triangle leads to an increase in the load on both static angles.

Driving through a small single obstacle results in the spring having time to smooth out the vertical impulse and distribute it evenly between the support bearing (the point of contact between the spring and the body) and the silent block. If the obstacle turns out to be more than one, the following will happen - the spring will effectively dampen the vertical impulse from hitting the first obstacle, then the suspension will need time to lower the wheel down. If the second obstacle is too close, then the spring will not have time to fully straighten, which means that the vertical impulse from the second obstacle will not be completely extinguished, that is, the impact on the body and silent block will be sharper. Why is this exposure dangerous? The silent block is designed for smooth impact and the absence of strong shock loads. However, driving on bad roads, especially if the snail's speed is not to the driver's liking, leads to too frequent action on the spring and increased loads on the silent block. On European roads this part easily travels 200 thousand kilometers, but on Russian roads even the original silent block rarely travels more than 100 thousand kilometers.

Solid spacers increase shock loads on the suspension, because when driving on bad roads, the wheel constantly moves up and down and the spring does not always have time to straighten. A solid spacer is installed instead of a thin shock-absorbing spacer, the purpose of which is to reduce the impact on the suspension even with a fully compressed spring. This leads to accelerated wear of silent blocks and shock absorbers by 2–5 times. When the silent blocks are broken, suspension play appears, which leads to an arbitrary change in the direction of wheel rotation by 1–3 degrees. At low speeds this is not critical, but at speeds over 100 kilometers per hour it poses a serious safety risk.

When the shock absorbers are worn out and have lost their characteristics, the speed of the wheel when the spring is released increases, which is why the wheel bounces off the ground and the whole cycle is repeated, albeit with a smaller amplitude. But the longer the wheel is off the ground, the less its influence on the controllability and stability of the car. If a wheel is lifted off the ground while braking or turning, the likelihood of skidding increases dramatically, which can lead to a collision with other cars or various obstacles. For this reason, installing any solid spacers between the body and the MacPherson strut or spring is not advisable. After all, replacing shock absorbers and silent blocks, which will have to be carried out 2–5 times more often in order to prevent a negative impact on handling, will be very expensive. If you neglect frequent suspension repairs, then the likelihood of getting into an accident is very high.

The center console at the top has a small multimedia system display, which is neatly inserted into the dashboard. Just below is the CD slot, under which there are a relatively small number of keys to control it all. To the left and right of these keys there are vertical air deflectors.

Then the center console goes a little deeper, which creates a misleading impression of a lot of space - marketing. In that area we are greeted by a separate climate control unit, which may also not be available in every configuration. It consists of a narrow monitor at the top, which displays the temperature you have selected. The rest of the block consists of two knobs and 11 buttons. At the very bottom of the center console we are greeted by one USB port and a small niche for small items, most likely for a smartphone.

The tunnel, which is located between the driver of the 2011-2019 Ford Focus and the front passenger, immediately greets us with a large gear selector that looks good and beautiful. To the left of it we see a 12V socket and a button to disable the parking sensors. And after all this, we are greeted on the left side by the parking brake handbrake, and to the right of it there is a box in which there are cup holders. The luggage compartment of the model has remained virtually unchanged; the sedan has a trunk volume of 372 liters, and the hatchback has 100 liters less.

In 2016, Euro NCAP tested this model for safety and received an excellent result. The model received a maximum score of five stars, and this was most likely achieved due to the fact that the manufacturer made the front part of the body more rigid.

Regardless of the body, it is 1823 mm, taking into account mirrors - about 2010 mm. As for the height, the hatchback and sedan have 1484 mm, and the station wagon is higher here too - 1505 mm. In general, we did not notice any significant changes in terms of dimensions. But the aerodynamic characteristics have improved somewhat and amounted to 0.27-0.30 Cx.

Good handling

I was surprised by the grip of the car; it holds the road well and takes turns. Of course, the car is easy to skid on wet asphalt, although this is quickly prevented by stabilization. The hatchback handles minor bumps with dignity; more discomfort was expected.

The first reason for this is the suspension. The American moved to a new C2 platform, which uses MacPherson struts at the front. The rear suspension depends on the configuration, either a semi-independent beam in younger engines, or an independent design with double wishbones.

Handling was also enhanced by the body, the rigidity of which increased by 20% due to high-strength steel. For the first time, a hatchback is optionally equipped with Continuously Controlled Damping adaptive shock absorbers, which change the stiffness after analyzing the suspension and the road situation.

A little off topic, but the model has been upgraded technologically, receiving adaptive cruise control, a pedestrian and road sign recognition system, lane marking control, and an automatic parking system. Also, Ford Focus will independently press the brake and even turn the steering wheel to avoid an accident.

  1. As a base, a conventional 16-valve engine that complies with Euro-5 standards, which has a volume of 1.6 liters, is offered. This unit has 105 horsepower and 150 units of torque, which allows you to accelerate the car to hundreds in as much as 12 seconds, which is a bit much. The maximum speed is 170 km/h, consumption in the city is 8 liters of 95 gasoline. On the highway it will take a little less than 5 liters.
  2. The second engine in the line has the same volume and is still naturally aspirated. Its power was increased to 125 horsepower, and torque was increased by nine units. As a result, this resulted in a reduction in dynamics to 11 seconds and an increase in maximum speed to 190 km/h. Consumption has not changed.
  3. The latest and most expensive engine in the Ford Focus 3 line is a 16-valve 1.5-liter unit that is turbocharged. It produces 150 horses and 240 H*m of torque, which allows the car to accelerate to the first hundred in 9 seconds, and the top speed is 210 km/h. I am glad that the consumption has also remained practically unchanged, but do not forget that if you drive, it will increase significantly.
