The new Gazelle brand with a Cummins diesel engine was presented in 2010, and in 2011 reviews from owners appeared. In three or four years, the car took its rightful place on the Russian market. It is interesting to compare the first impressions of the new model and later ones, reflecting the experience of long-term use.
The engine installed on the new Gazelle was developed by the world famous American company Cummins. Its power is 120 hp, the mileage between major repairs is 500 thousand km, the assembly is Chinese. It is the behavior of this engine that is most often discussed on forums today.
Advantages of a Gazelle car with a Cummins diesel engine
The first reviews of the Gazelle with the Kamens diesel engine were very critical. Professionals and car enthusiasts noted, first of all, the increase in price of the model compared to the previous version.
The Gazelle-Kamens minibus has earned disapproval due to its insufficiently comfortable interior and poor sound insulation. Many motorists reacted negatively to the replacement of the domestic 406 engine with the American Kamens.
Radical car experts said that the Gazelle was in demand due to its low price, availability of spare parts and a good 406 engine, that is, because of what the new model lacks. From this they concluded that there would be no demand for a new modification of the car.
However, the pessimistic forecasts did not come true. The new diesel Gazelle travels along the roads of Russia in the guise of trucks, minibuses, vans, mobile workshops, etc.
The comfort of the interior of minibuses has ceased to be a subject of discussion, the topic has quickly exhausted itself, and, in essence, this parameter is at a completely acceptable level.
However, the operation of the engine receives endless discussions and comments.

My friend and I bought a new Gazelle Next with a Volkswagen under the hood. This is not a car, but rare shit. The first problem was that after 30 km the fuses blew all over the world, but these are minor things. The second problem was that at 300 km the driveshaft crunched and the starter began to bite. And then all hell broke loose. At 800 km the engine stopped revving. We barely made it to Rostov and back. Now every one and a half thousand kilometers her brains burn out or the firmware crashes and she begins to detonate or not move at all. In general, for now we are driving a replacement one, but ours goes back and forth from the showroom to the factory and they cannot deal with it there. Draw your own conclusions, comrades.
Vladislav July 4, 2019
Many flattering reviews have been written about Gazelle Next, but I decided to talk about all the shortcomings of mine, purchased in the summer of 2021. The hydraulic booster was replaced under warranty with a mileage of 20,000 km (it hummed from the first day), the gearbox lacks clarity and 6th gear, poor interior insulation , a terrible original clutch (already installed by Valeo), the Cummins diesel engine turned out to be a complete mister (they’ve already done it 2 times, and the car has only 150 thousand miles), stupid radio, poor assembly and generally poor quality of almost all components and assemblies of the car . Perhaps it was not a successful car that I came across, but after reading reviews from owners on other resources and talking with fleet owners who have 10-20 Next GAZelles, I was convinced that all my problems also occur on their cars. So think very carefully before buying Gazelle Next.
Sergey November 5, 2018
I have owned a GAZelle Next with a 120-horsepower Cummins turbo diesel since the summer of 2018. Before the new model, I also drove a Gazelle, but the “old” one. Gazelle Next is superior to the previous model in all respects. The frame is stronger, the front independent suspension and the sharper steering wheel are simply super, the diesel engine is generally classy, both in the city and on the highway. Consumption with a full load (sometimes I load about 2 tons) is pleasing: on average 12-12.5 liters, if, of course, you don’t trample on slippers and don’t try to race with cars. However, there are also disadvantages: low-lying mirrors, the lower part of which is blocked by the door window sill, hard plastic in the cabin, which appeared to everyone, and in some places the assembly of interior elements is clumsy. But overall I like the car and so far it hasn’t caused any problems. Let's see what will happen next.
Timur March 2, 2017 I’ll say this: anyone who hasn’t driven old Gazelles themselves will simply not be able to fully appreciate Next. If he gets in, at most he will say that it’s a normal modern car for work, but when I got into the Gazelle Next I was simply dumbfounded. It’s as if they assembled a Toyota instead of “Constipation”)) Before choosing the appropriate option, I did several test drives.
Stanislav February 11, 2017 I just want to say... mu-ki! Well, where is this Sable Next, which is in the photo? I waited for him for three years...
Alexey November 21, 2016 The car is just a song. I'm so glad I bought this bus last year. I bought it in the City of Russian Cars in St. Petersburg, where there were normal discounts on the Gazelle Next. And for trade-in, all sorts of bonuses and discounts were given. I traded in my old gazelle and took this one. I put it on the route as a minibus, and it earned back its cost in six months. Well, what can we say about the shortcomings - all cars have them, especially Russian ones. Ours cannot work without them at all. But in general, I didn’t notice any particular problems on my car.
Vlad January 13, 2016 Overall an excellent device, Gazelle Next. There are, of course, some design flaws and flaws, but without them, most likely, there are no cars at all. Each brand and model has its own pros and cons, be it Merc or VAZ. In 1.5 years I have already reeled in more than 70 thousand, no problems yet. The most important thing is not to overload and take care of the car.
Nikolay November 10, 2015 Gazelle Next is generally not a bad car compared to the previous model. The engine runs without interruption, mileage per year is 65,000 km. The cabin is comfortable, the car moves smoothly along the highway, I cover 1,700 km from the loading point to the unloading point without stopping and without problems. The only thing that hasn’t been improved is that the cruise control sometimes works intermittently in hot weather, and the engine power is not enough when driving on mountainous roads.
Mikhail September 20, 2015 Gazelle is a freak of a car!!! There is not a single part in it that does not break. I have been dismantling gazelles for many years (I have disassembled about 2000 Gazelles and Volgas). Many thanks to the GAZ plant for the new freak Gazelle next, now we won’t be left idle. The Cummins engine is terribly expensive and it runs in the next 50-120 thousand km, the Euro 3,4, 5 system is evil, any part for this engine costs from 10,000 rubles (on order), and there are no options to fix it with crooked paws ! In the front suspension, replacing a wheel stud is a disaster. Gazelle Next will leave you without pants after a year of ownership! Advice: if you don’t have enough money for a normal car and you bought this new junk, put a 405 or 409 engine in it, only the brains are 0 euros, and put the fashionable engine aside until it burps to sell the car... we already do that. Good luck to all.
Sergey Shch. March 11, 2015 Vyacheslav Pavlovich, all these problems are typical to one degree or another for foreign-made minibuses, especially narrow aisles. And all these problems can be solved only by reducing the number of seats, but then the profitability of passenger transportation by minibus taxis will most likely suffer, and then you will be indignant at the cost of travel. Full-fledged buses do not have these problems, but they are hardly suitable for the minibus format, and minibuses are micro... because there are fewer and fewer seats: the number of seats and the width of the aisle, the reason for all this is the overall dimensions. So what are you not happy with: GAZelle or minibuses in general? Here, in fact, the reviews are specifically about GAZelle-Next.
Sergey August 10, 2014 Vyacheslav Pavlovich. Gazelle Next is not a bus, but a minibus, why is it rubbing while standing there?! It’s too tight for you, you are welcome to NEFAZ or LIAZ.
Vyacheslav Pavlovich August 4, 2014 Gazelle Next bus. Today, 08/04/2014 (Rostov-on-Don), I drove for the first time in this car as a passenger. There are a lot of impressions. I’m making an effort to write a review without swearing. Disadvantages of Gazelle Next bus: 1. A narrow passage between the seats (two people in summer clothes have difficulty passing apart, but what will happen in the winter? What if you take a student bag?) 2. With my height of 180 cm, it is uncomfortable to sit in the passenger seat (my knees rest against the back of the seat), except for the seats next to emergency exit. 3. Interior ventilation is poor (the emergency hatch provides a weak air flow, and not all windows have vents, even those at the top) Conclusion: this car is not suitable for operating as a minibus!
Mikhail January 14, 2014 one review was right: we need a methane-powered gazelle, and not with a hybrid; gasoline + gas, but a purely gas engine, more methane gas stations are needed. With methane, valves and seats last much longer than with propane-butane; the engine lasts for 500,000 km. It starts well and does not require preparation of the combustible mixture. There is no need to talk about the cost - 1 cubic meter of gas is equal in return to 1 liter of gasoline, but costs 11 rubles. And in winter, the beauty is warmth and no additional costs, like a diesel engine. Winter is from -20, not -5, -10. Of all the engines that were on gazelles, the best is 405. I drove them all, although not one of them passed less than 300,000 thousand, but 405 is already 450 thousand - 0.02% of euros 4 or 5 performs, on gas.
Alexey January 12, 2014 I want to say that I am very glad that the GAZ plant does not stand still and is working to earn a place for itself in the Russian market. In any case, the car has advantages in comparison with the previous model and subsequent models will be improved and further developed!!! I also hope that the time will come when the new Volga, Chaika, and Pobeda models will roll off the plant’s assembly line again; it’s not for nothing that the plant reserves the right to produce cars under these brands. Good luck to the new “Gazelle” and may it find its place on our roads!!!
Vladimir December 14, 2013 I cannot agree with Nikolai who wrote a review on November 17, 2012 at 10:10. Have you already bought it to say so? I have a fleet of 18 Gazelle-Next vehicles, the cars are not parked, some of them have driven over 140,000 km. Oil, pads, filters. That's it, we only change consumables. The question is who is driving. If it’s a gasket, then a foreign brand can be damaged, such rubbish is used on routes, look for yourself. For me, if a driver from a route comes to work to get a job, it’s definitely a good time! But in the Russian mentality there is something new - first you have to crap, then watch how others drive, and then take it yourself. By the way, before renting the car, I personally took it for a ride, and for a commercial vehicle, I’ll tell you, it’s pretty decent!
Pavel October 29, 2013 Good afternoon. I worked on Gazelle for 7 years and bought it new. Over the years it has served me faithfully. There is only one nuance regarding the body, but a very big one - it rots quickly, regarding the engine - the first repair is at 380,000 km, the gearbox lasted up to 450,000 km. The car was used by a minibus. So, you can drive a normal Gazelle car.
Alexey October 1, 2013 I have a 1997 Gazelle, I’ve been driving it for 5 years, the mileage is 150,000 km after major repairs, I have no complaints.
Alexander September 16, 2013 My heavy-duty Gazelle has done 200 thousand and the Sobol has done 180 thousand. On both of them, at 150 thousand km I changed the heads, valves and seats - they burned out apparently from the gas (I drive on gas). The tax is good, the cars are in production and overloads and the distance is all there. In general, I think that the 406 engine is a good option for them. Worker, the main thing is to look after and not rape fools. What about the new Gazelle Next? I'll wait for the new ones, time will tell... Expensive. A foreign car will be cheaper in everything, the spare parts are at least of high quality, and the comfort is decent. Something like that.
Bulochkin September 10, 2013 The beautiful shiny toy Gazelle Next in the hands of masochistic drivers quickly turns into a pile of scrap metal, regardless of their driving experience!
Andrey July 14, 2013 Gazelle is a normal car. In terms of build quality, half of the foreign cars are assembled in Russia, so the assembly will be the same. I have a ’97 Gazelle, engine 402: yes, I repair it often, but instead of the required 1.5 tons I drive from 2 to 4, so why shouldn’t it break down, poor thing! And I think the critics also do the same. The only problem with new cars is that Chinese diesel engines are not cheap to maintain, but I’m still going to buy a Gazelle Next!
Vladimir-Ekaterinburg July 4, 2013 Gazelle NEXT is my second car, I bought it three weeks ago, before that I had a simple 2008 Gazelle with a Chrysler engine. I would like to note that in those days, no matter how much they criticized Chrysler, the investment in the engine ended up being 0 rubles. Only oil and consumables, over the entire period I replaced 3 broken springs and a brake vacuum, these are all investments for almost five years of operation and a mileage of 230,000 km. The car paid for itself 12 times, plus I sold it for only 70,000 rubles cheaper than I paid for it. Now I bought a Gazelle Next without any hesitation, I paid 802,000 rubles, comfort level 1. I am sure that this car will serve me no less, and in terms of comfort it is much ahead of its older brothers. For comparison, a Fiat Ducato booth costs 1,280 thousand rubles, Ford Transit – 1,400 thousand rubles, Iveco – 1,800 thousand rubles. Personally, I don’t need an eternal car, 5 years is the normal lifespan for a truck, both morally and financially, so I’d rather drive new Gazelles than 10-year-old Japanese ones. Good luck to everyone on the roads.
Andrey June 28, 2013 And I like Gazelle Next. I have a Gazelle Business thermal van 2012, covered 50,000 km. No problems, I only fill with Lukoil. There was one problem - the starter flew at 5000 km, but under warranty they replaced it within 3 hours, but otherwise everything was fine. Dieselek makes me happy, you won’t accelerate much - 80-90 km/h, but I don’t need more. Of course, it turns out to be more expensive than gas, but this is not significant, especially if you only drive around the city. Good luck to everyone in your choice.
Robert June 21, 2013 Of course, you missed the point about the speed of the 406 carburetor. I had a “Sable” 406 carburetor, sometimes I could barely climb a mountain with 500 kg in 2nd gear. And as for Next, I think if the quality is good, then we will have no equal.
Arthur June 18, 2013 The engine of the Gazelle Next is good, it pulls uphill no worse than a 406 carburetor, but on a straight line it is rather weak. We were racing, so there was no cheating.
Bulat June 11, 2013 Today I was at the Luidor car dealership in Ufa. I wanted to buy a GAZelle Business. But then I saw this new Next, I liked it purely in appearance, the interior is spacious and comfortable, heated electric mirrors, power windows. It seems like a small thing, but it’s nice when it’s comfortable. Now I’m racking my brains about which car to choose. If you compare Gazelle Business with Gazelle Next, then these are completely different cars in my opinion. I’ve never driven a Gazelka myself and therefore I can’t criticize our auto industry, I still want GAZ people to make cars no worse than foreigners.
Valery From Volgograd. June 10, 2013 Guys, stop trashing the car, I have owned Gazelles since 2002. Now I own a car made in 2011 with a diesel engine, mileage is 130,000 km, there are no problems at all, because I drive myself, and you are probably riders, even if it’s a foreign car, even a Gazelle, you’ll kill it anyway. I sat down the drivers, but the car really crumbled, I spat and sat down myself and there were no problems. Now I’ll definitely buy a new Gazelle Next because I’m happy with the car and I earn from 70,000 to 90,000 a month net on it, they don’t have that much on a truck, and you’re all complaining. Any car breaks down, even a small truck, but the hardware there costs a lot. I had a fleet of cars ranging from 20 tons to 10 tons. 5t. and 3t. Gazelle is the most popular car in Russia.
Sergey May 21, 2013 I agree with Yanis! I’ve been working on Gazelles for 10 years now. I myself have two South Korean mikriks: 1995 and 2006. The new Gazelle and the old Korean mikrik are heaven and earth, Gazelle can’t hold a candle! And for the current price of a Gazelle, I would not hesitate to buy a 1-2 year old foreign car of the same class!!! After all, a Gazelle will remain a Gazelle, be it Business or Next! We don’t know how or don’t want to make cars for people!
Janis May 21, 2013 Gazelle, just as it was a bucket with nuts, will remain a bucket. I have a 2011 Gazelle Business - it breaks down often, I think I should sell it and get a Volkswagen, it will be more reliable.
Alexander May 7, 2013 I have been driving Gazelles since 1997. I can only say one thing. The strongest and most durable Gazelle was produced in 1997. I drove 150,000 km in three years, there were no serious breakdowns, I didn’t even do a kingpin. And now the Gazelle is 2007. No matter what I did to it, oil ran out of the bridge from all the cracks, until I changed the axle shafts and installed an additional washer in the shank. In the kingpins, the support bearings stood with their heads facing down. Engine 405022 had a capital cost of 80,000, it turns out the pistons were two sizes smaller (the mechanics said), so it consumed 1 liter of oil per 1000 km. In general, everywhere you go there is a complete marriage. Here is a Gazelle, produced in December 2007.
From Kuznetsk May 3, 2013 I have had and will have gazelles. Gazelle is an excellent car for Russian conditions. Now the Farmer Business is diesel - for two years it has a mileage of 220 thousand km and I load up to 2 tons, although it was a couple of times even 3 tons. The bridge is still original, the box has been repaired once. There are no problems with the engine - like new and it pulls super well compared to gasoline. Empty I accelerate no more than 100 km, when loaded it’s 80-90 km per hour.
Andrey April 30, 2013 I don’t know how foreign cars are, but our Gazelle drives with an overload of 2-3 tons. I myself saw a Gazelle weighing 6 tons on the scales, so it’s not surprising that the bridge is in half. I also liked the question of whether the new suspension can withstand 2 tons, but the car is designed for 1.5. So let’s not overload the car, then you’ll see it will drive and transportation prices will be normal.
Alexey April 30, 2013 I bought a 2008 VW T-5 from Germany, my friend, at the same time as me, took a new Gazelle from a car dealership. A year has passed, I spent a total of about 23 thousand rubles on repairing my car and the cost of oil and filters for each maintenance (I don’t count it because the costs are the same for any car). My friend’s gazelle “loses the rear axle” at 20 thousand - breaks in half! It was good to drive slowly. I don’t know how much he invests in repairs, but I noticed a pattern - I go to the car wash, and his GAZelle is parked next to the service station. It’s unlikely that he buys body polish there that often.
Vasily April 27, 2013 I don’t know how, but they would install the 409 ZMZ engine on the Gazelle Next. I would be glad to buy such a bus, and it cannot be compared with the Ford Transit. I would also like an automatic machine for city minibuses, then I wouldn’t mind paying a million. Considering the current traffic jams, even in small Russian cities, an automatic transmission is extremely necessary.
Vladimir April 25, 2013 The price is close to Fiat Ducato, and the quality is close to Chinese products.
Vitaly April 21, 2013 Yes, Gazelle Next turned out to be the same crap as Gazelle Business. It eats like a Gazik, it’s also full of glands... and there’s no speed at all because of the rear axle. And the suspension is now made of shitty iron.
Denis April 19, 2013 The Russian economy is supported by natural resources, which, thank God, we still have, and billions of dollars injected into VAZs and GAZs, which are usually stolen, are ruining our economy. I have a WV-T4, the car is 16 years old. I bought it for 200,000 rubles. over 7 years of operation, I invested another 200,000 in current repairs... I drive it every day. My friend took a Sable from a car dealership for 500,000 rubles. For 3 thousand. The engine was worn out over the course of the mileage, and it turned out that there were not enough spare parts in the engine head. After the repair, I came back on a tow truck 3 times. I sold it for 280,000 and crossed myself. Now he has a 10-year-old Toyota Haice. Draw conclusions. Best regards, good luck to everyone.
Mars April 19, 2013 denis Of course, you can scold the Russian auto industry a lot and endlessly, but it was these GAZs that boosted the Russian economy, and they are still quietly doing their job.
Denis April 18, 2013 What is this semi-galvanized bucket Gazelle Next going to compete with if the price of a naked ((car)) starts from 700,000 rubles? You’ll leave the showroom with it only after you’ve been sold on options for 850,000. When will these VAZs and GAZs die a natural death? Stop throwing money away already! In Russia there is a place to place them.
Max April 17, 2013 Tell me, if you install a Katyusha and carry 6-meter sheets weighing about a ton on a 4-meter Gazelle Next, will the front suspension withstand it?
Alexander The cost of this “miracle” - Gazelle Next is 900 thousand rubles, the selling price is 700,000 rubles. The plans for this year are 20 thousand. cars. Maxus, Cyber, Valdai... when will they ruin the plant completely? April 16, 2013
Alexander If they don’t change the box on the Gazelle Next, I think the diesel will tear it, if the car gets stuck. I think this is not the only fly in the ointment! April 15, 2013
Ilya I wonder if Gazelle Next with a double cabin will be used as a business or as a farmer? April 15, 2013
Movses I have a Gazelle Business engine 421, a class car from 2010, it doesn’t rot, there are some minor scratches, but that doesn’t count. But that's not what this review is about. Please, if anyone knows where you can look at this new car - namely the Gazelle minibus. The price is really expensive, but cheaper than foreign cars, their prices start from 1,160,000 rubles. April 13, 2013
Igor ON the Gazelle-Next you need to install an LPG with methane and immediately a gas engine, this miracle car will be happily bought by millions, including me, who will sell my Ford Transit and buy a Next (heating the windshield and mirrors won’t hurt either). Please hear me, creators of Gazelle Next! In this situation, I will buy 2 NEXT at once. Diesel fuel costs 31 rubles and continues to rise in price, it’s mind boggling. How can diesel cost the same price as 95 petrol? April 12, 2013
Sergey I wonder when the Lawn will be updated? 11 April 2013
Bus driver Good afternoon, all the changes in the new Gazelle are of course for the better. For me in Irkutsk, front-wheel drive, interior insulation, and not rotting for at least 6-8 years are more important. South Korean minibuses, even from 2000, are all cast, have good engines, and strong horses. Compare for conclusion. April 9, 2013
Savvaty Gvering! You are deeply wrong about the ZMZ engine. I took the Farmer in 2001 and drove 302 thousand km without capital and without major repairs. During this time I changed the sedative twice. Until now I use synthetic oil, I don’t cheat. Pouring lean food and wanting something else – that doesn’t happen. April 9, 2013
Alex Let's see how Gazelle Next performs in practice, and then we'll evaluate it! April 4, 2013
Gvering Looks like a Volkswagen, find 10 differences, even the price is somewhere close. I hope that the Gazelle Next will not be supplied with a petrol ZMZ in the future. March 29, 2013
Ruslan It’s a pity that the beam in front was removed, now the new Gazelle Next won’t take more than 2 tons, I think. How do you think? March 24, 2013
NEXT 438 I'm currently testing Gazelle Next, I really like the car, I'm absolutely delighted with the car. In terms of suspension and its driving characteristics, it is qualitatively different from the currently produced Gazelle. Of course, there are shortcomings, but these are all minor things and will be eliminated soon. Car enthusiasts will understand me; there are no perfect cars. February 23, 2013
Yuri February 18, 2013 The fact that the suspension on the Sobols will change is already respectable (as I looked at the photo, the current Sobol Next has only two steering fingers instead of eight on the old one, and there are no pendulum axes). The body is galvanized, the doorway is larger. The only question is the price, it’s very steep – it makes it look like a foreign car.
Zhenya December 11, 2012 Thank God they made a big booth for the mikrik. There will be a riser and more saddles. The front suspension needs to be spring-loaded, and the rear shock absorbers need to be more powerful, one-sided (so that the car rides smoothly when half-empty).
Veronica November 19, 2012 Gazelle Next sounds promising and looks optimistic. I would like to see these cute “faces” of buses on the roads, instead of the gray and faceless gazelles of today.
Nikolay November 17, 2012 Well, they changed the cabin, changed the chassis a little, made the interior different. While it is not clear whether they will install only diesel or maybe they will install the old gasoline engine, the box remains the same. Everything seems fine, but the price... they promise 700,000 rubles, if you buy less than 800,000 rubles you won’t find it. It’s better not to think about the build quality at all; after purchasing, take it into the garage and check and tighten everything yourself.
Gasoline or diesel "Gazelle"
The dispute about which engine was better was resolved during operation. For the area of use of the Gazelle, diesel is preferable. This was shown by sales dynamics: 80% of Gazelles in use are equipped with a Cummins diesel engine, reviews of which have become positive and friendly.
Most owners of diesel cars note the endurance of the engine and its good service life. A mileage of 500 thousand km between repairs is not a theory, but a reality. For gasoline engines, such a mileage without repair is rather an exception. Diesel Gazelles are cheaper to operate.
At first, the Chinese assembly was an unimportant recommendation for the engine. Products from China are the living embodiment of the slogan “cheap and cheerful.” But experienced motorists argued that this does not apply to the Cummins engine, made using approved technology, in compliance with all quality standards, tested at various stages of production.
An engine made by Chinese workers at an American factory is no worse than an American one, even more American than in America, experts joked
Where are Cummins power plants used?
Installed engines from Cummins can be found on the following vehicles:
- Gazelle Sable;
- Gazelle Next;
- Gazelle Business;
- Other cars that are suitable for swapping this engine.
Let's look at the operational features of this engine.
Should I add oil to fuel with a Cummins diesel?
And yet problems arise during operation, especially in winter. A popular topic for discussion on forums is the problem of clean fuel. Drivers note with annoyance the presence of water in diesel fuel. Such an impurity disrupts the operation of the engine. The origin of water in diesel fuel is moisture condensation in the fuel tank.
Some drivers try to improve engine performance by adding oil to the fuel. Is such a measure justified? Experts say: this should not be done. Once upon a time, when using two-stroke internal combustion engines, this made sense, but for modern engines, the oil in the engine is just carbon deposits and soot.
It is proposed to improve engine performance in another way - warm up the fuel filters, fuel intakes, drain the sediment from the filter, add special additives to the fuel that eliminate water from the fuel tank
Spare parts and fuel for the Gazelle car with Cummins diesel engine
An inexhaustible topic for discussion is original and fake spare parts. The problem is, motorists note, that they are often impossible to distinguish from each other.
Fuel filters must be original to protect the injectors, experienced people say. They are objected to: original filters do not save you from troubles. This means it’s a fake, say enthusiasts of the original filters.
In essence, the same can be said about other spare parts, but it is filters that are most often suspected of being unoriginal, due to annoying injector failures associated with expensive repairs.
Most drivers tend to attribute problems that arise to low-quality fuels and lubricants. Buy fuel only from reliable dealers, car owners urge each other.
But this is not a panacea, others note. It is enough to buy fuel at a gas station of a different company than always, and the engine knocks, the injectors become clogged, and other troubles occur.
The problem of the quality of fuel and lubricants really exists, but most of the troubles attributed to fuel occur in the cold season - this is the opinion of experienced people. Diesel fuel thickens in the cold.
Cummins diesel engines are very demanding on fuel quality. Despite the simplicity of Cummins fuel systems, they require some maintenance. But not every driver will be able to do this on their own.A competent approach to the maintenance and repair of the Cummins 2.8 engine can provide all the conditions so that it can reveal all the capabilities that the designers have built into it. Read about engine repair in this article.
Different batches of fuel react differently to lower temperatures. Winter diesel fuel is produced for use in winter. If the temperature is below -35°C, then arctic fuel is needed.
The problem is that at normal temperatures, neither the color nor the smell of winter and summer fuel differ. If the temperature fluctuates significantly during the day, the wrong type of fuel can do a bad job: at a certain point, the fuel will turn into a jelly-like mass.
Timely transition from summer to winter diesel fuel and vice versa is an important condition for flawless engine operation. In addition, the fuel system must be warmed up while parked.
Craftsmen advise: if there is no diesel fuel in the winter, add 10% kerosene to the summer one. However, not everyone agrees with the benefits of this measure.
Injectors and batteries for Gazelle with Cummins diesel
“I bought a diesel Gazelle - save money for injectors,” the owners of diesel cars from the Gorky Automobile Plant note with annoyance. Indeed, malfunction of the injectors is one of the main reasons for contacting a car service center.
However, this problem does not happen with all engines. Many car owners note the long-term trouble-free operation of injectors, as well as all car systems in general.
The battery for a diesel engine must provide high starting current. This is especially important in winter. Viscous diesel fuel will not ignite with enough current to start a gasoline engine.
The oil capacity of a Kamens engine depends on the type of engine, the number of cylinders and the type of oil pan. An insufficient amount of oil leads to a decrease in pressure and deterioration of the lubrication system, which entails accelerated wear of engine mechanisms.
In this article we will try to figure out how the GAZ Valdai model was transformed after these cars with the CUMMINS ISF3.8 diesel engine began to be produced, and what is the fuel consumption of the Valdai with a Cummins engine.
Therefore, to operate a diesel Gazelle in winter, new batteries are needed; it is recommended to change them no later than after three years. In case of winter problems with the engine, they are sometimes eliminated by replacing the battery.
The electrolyte level must be high. Commentators on the forums note: a battery removed from a diesel Gazelle due to its unusability can work well in a car with a gasoline engine.
Design and principle of operation of the motor
This device from the manufacturer Cummings has a combined lubrication system. The parts are lubricated and cooled by pressure and spraying oil through an oil pump at the same time. This operation of the lubricant allows the metal and constantly rubbing elements of the Kamins engine to experience greater loads and the least wear.

ISF powerplants are most popular due to their heated intake manifold. Therefore, this Kamins engine starts just as easily in northern regions at temperatures of minus thirty, as in southern regions at temperatures of plus thirty degrees Celsius.
The Kamins liquid engine cooling system prevents the engine from overheating while operating in difficult conditions in temperatures over forty. But this is not the most expensive part in the engine.
The Kamins crankshaft is responsible for the reciprocating motion of the pistons. They create that same torque. The cylinder block is cast from cast iron, and the cylinder head is also made from cast iron. Kamins sleeves are milled. They have medium hold. Easily replaced when worn.
The Kamins crankshaft is made of malleable cast iron. It is balanced in production. Cummings engine crankshaft journals are cemented. Thanks to this, they are resistant to wear and have high strength. They are not replaceable. Therefore, the Kamins crankshaft is completely replaced with a new part during production.
Kamins intake and exhaust valves are made of steel that can withstand extreme heat. The valves have stems made of chrome. This metal prevents scuffing on the valves, which helps increase the life of the engine.
Kamins valves have a spherical well. And the exhaust valves of the Cummins engine have their own trick. True, it does not play any role in the power or increase in the life of the engine. This is an engraved letter "C".
The pistons consist of an aluminum skirt. The upper part is smelted from a metal alloy that is resistant to overheating.
Let's take a look at the decoding of the Cumings ISF2.8S4 model:
- IS is an acronym. In English it stands for interact system. A translates as an engine with an electronic control system;
- F is the model name;
- 2.8 – volume in liters;
- S4 indicates belonging to the ecological class. At the moment, these are engines with Euro 4. That is, cars with an engine of this class can be driven to Europe.
The camshaft is located in the Kamins cylinder head. Driven by chain. The latter has hydraulic tensioners and two shoes. Chain wear is equal to one hundred thousand kilometers under adequate operating conditions. If the engine and the car are operated under extreme conditions, then all spare parts, and not just the chain, have to be changed more often.

The Kamins turbine fails after 75,000 kilometers. There is no way to repair it. Therefore, if the turbocharger breaks down, this element is completely replaced, just like the crankshaft.
Cummins winter maintenance
Many problems can be avoided if, on the eve of cold weather, you give the Gazelle into the hands of car service specialists. The list of measures to prepare a car for winter is extensive, and the car owner does not always know all the intricacies of this procedure. If he knows, he can cope with the preparations for winter on his own.
It is necessary to drain the sediment from the filter and tank, check the electrolyte level in the battery, clean the terminals so as not to overheat under high current loads, check the glow plugs...
However, recommendations on forums may have an advisory voice. To properly operate the vehicle, you must carefully read the accompanying documentation.
Compliance with operating rules, regular preventive maintenance, good preparation of the car for the winter season - these measures can extend the service life of the car for years, as all motorist experts believe.
Recently, when drivers have become more familiar with the new Gazelles, most of them agree that a Gazelle with a Cummins diesel engine is a great boon. This is exactly what the reviews that are available in large numbers on various Internet forums indicate.
