In technical terms, the ZMZ-405 is almost no different from the 406 engine. Changes were made in the area of ​​increasing the piston diameter to 92 mm (previously it was 95.5 mm). In addition, the ZMZ-405 has thinner inter-cylinder jumpers installed, and slots for cooling have also appeared, but engines with adaptation to Euro-3 do not have them. At the same time, the height of the cylinder block is identical to ZMZ-406. The increase in volume made it possible to increase power by 7 hp. s., at the same time the torque also increased. Otherwise, this is the same 406, despite compliance with Euro-3. The main engine of the family of the same name is the ZMZ-4052.10, known from Volgas and Gazelles. The option with the index 4052.10 corresponds to Euro-2, and 40524.10 – Euro-3. The latter was installed only on the Volga. The more modern 40525.10, which is an analogue of 40522.10, also met Euro 3 and was relevant only for Gazelles. And finally, the ZMZ-4054.10 is the only turbocharged version of the ZMZ-405. It has a steel crankshaft, a forged piston, an intercooler and produces 195 hp. With. This engine was not in demand due to its high cost, so tuners often preferred the proven Toyota 1JZ/2JZ instead.

Description of the ZMZ 405 engine

Before the ZMZ 405 engine appeared, the company produced 402 and 406 series of power plants. These engines are outdated, which was the reason to develop a new generation of gasoline units that are superior to their predecessors.

Modification of the 406 power plant, in contrast to the 405 unit, is equipped with pistons with a larger diameter (95.5 mm versus 92 mm), durable jumpers separating the cylinders, and special voids that remove excess engine heat. The connecting rods and other structural elements did not change. With increasing volume, power also increased by seven horsepower, and torque also increased. The remaining mechanisms and components are similar to its predecessor. The power plant subsequently served as the basis for the creation of the 409 version.

Today, the 405 engine serves GAZ and UAZ vehicles; it is a unit on which an injector is installed, due to which fuel consumption has decreased. In comparison with the base engine used before the appearance of the model, the installation is distinguished by a sixteen-valve head, in addition, a carburetor was installed on the four hundred and sixth. Today, ZMZ model 405 power plants meet Euro requirements, which has made it possible to bring the products to the sales level when the mechanisms are used for operation on foreign equipment. The first imported car to be equipped with an engine in 2011 was Fiat Ducato.

The installation being developed is intended for operation in moderate climatic conditions. The temperature at which the motor is used varies: -45°C to +40°C. If the temperature does not exceed 25°C, then the engine is not afraid of 100% air humidity. According to GOST 15150, this design is classified as “U2”.

As for the basic unit: the gasoline engine, with four cylinders, performs four strokes during operation, the cylinders are arranged in a row, and there are four valves for each cylinder. The valves are driven by camshafts, the latter are located at the top, one product is responsible for the intake valves, the second product is responsible for the exhaust valves. In GAZ vehicles - 3302, Gazelle, Sobol, the installation is placed longitudinally in the space under the hood, secured with rubber supports, of which there are three in the set. The engine is powered by an injector, distributed injection.

The most correct tuning for ZMZ is turbo. A well-assembled turbo 405 will give more (and sometimes much more) 300 hp, which an aspirated engine will not produce under any settings. It is worth noting that a Euro-2 block is not suitable for the construction of a turbo cramp, it is weakened by the slots between the cylinders, your choice is more recent blocks for Euro-3 (40524.10 and 40525.10).

Malfunctions and repairs of the Volga / Gazelle ZMZ-405 engine

The ZMZ-405 engine was developed on the basis of the 406 engine and differs in piston diameter (increased from 92 to 95.5 mm), the height of the cylinder block is the same, the inter-cylinder jumpers have become thinner, slots for cooling have appeared (there are none on the block of Euro-3 engines), the connecting rods remained the same. Otherwise, the engine remained the same, due to the increased volume, the power increased by 7 hp, the torque increased, the latest engines began to comply with Euro-3 environmental standards and nothing more, still the same ZMZ406.
