How to close the starter directly? 3 ways to start the engine

Cases in which the problem can be solved on site

If the starter does not turn, there are several ways to start the car:

  • close the starter contacts with a screwdriver;
  • Connect the starter directly to the battery.

In an automobile system, the starter has a separate role - to spin the crankshaft to create the required torque and compression ratio for the fuel-air mixture. Naturally, the starter functions in conjunction with other components and electrical systems. Therefore, damage of various properties may occur:

  • lack of voltage in the on-board network;
  • battery discharge;
  • damage to wires;
  • problem in the ignition switch;
  • mismatch of oil viscosity in the crankcase;
  • weakening of contacts.

If the starter does not work, then in most cases the traction relay fails, the coil winding burns out, the bendix slips, or the screw thread drive runs slowly.

Some damage to the starter allows it to operate normally when the engine is running. But he fails to spin the heavy flywheel the first time. In any case, after a successful start, it is necessary to urgently take the starter for professional diagnostics in order to identify the true cause of the malfunction.

Thus, a malfunction of the starter may be caused by:

  • faulty start relay;
  • Bendix wear;
  • problems with the solenoid relay;
  • combustion of the internal elements of the unit.

Basic starter failures

More experienced car enthusiasts know that the car may not start for a number of reasons that have nothing to do with the starter. But still, most often the “dog is buried” in it.

To clearly understand the essence of the problem, you should familiarize yourself with common starter malfunctions, which include:

  • burnt winding;
  • malfunctions in the relay;
  • wear of the overrunning clutch (Bendix);
  • oxidation of contacts.

With all these breakdowns, the engine will start with difficulty or even refuse to start. It is in this situation that you need to take action.

We close the starter directly with a screwdriver (video inside)

The purpose of writing this text is to warn car owners against one common mistake. When the key is turned to the START/KRANK mark, the starter does not turn, and then they try to close the power terminals directly. Having opened the hood and reached the starter, they see two copper taps - they are closed. In this case, the electric motor is activated, but the solenoid relay is not activated, and the freewheel bearing remains in place. In reality, power taps cannot be shorted! We will talk further about how to properly close the starter with a screwdriver.

How to test the starter with a battery

Let's start diagnostics of engine starting with the first question that many car owners ask - how to check the starter on the battery and what will such a test show?

This manipulation makes it possible to determine the correct functioning of the starter, since when it is on the engine, apart from clicks (if they are heard, of course), little can be said about the operation of the device. Therefore, by closing the terminals with leads on the starter retractor and the starter housing, you can determine whether there is a malfunction in the retractor relay or the starter itself by seeing whether the relay operates and whether the starter motor turns.

Checking if the starter turns

To test the starter for its ability to extend the gear and turn (as it should work when installed on the car), you can use the battery.

For the test, you need to securely fix the part, connect the “-” terminal to the body , and the “+” terminal to the upper terminal of the relay and its switching contact . During proper operation, the bendix should move out and the gear motor should rotate .

Let’s look at how to check each component of the engine starting device separately, clearly and in more detail.

Some information about the ignition switch device

Lada Priora cars use anti-theft locks that block the next start of the starter and connect the key to the standard anti-theft system. The device is located directly under the steering wheel in a special way (four screws with tear-off caps that prevent unscrewing) and is fixed to the steering column.

The engine is started using a key that is inserted into the lock cylinder.

The device is powered by a battery, and a special relay marked “K4” is responsible for ensuring proper protection of the electrical circuit. The starter locking is achieved by a locking rod that is retracted and prevents the key from being removed in all its positions except the zero stage (position “0”). With one key position, only electrical circuits are activated. In a different condition they are different. For example, at the first mark, some on-board equipment is activated (windshield wipers, power windows, dashboard indicators, etc.), and the next time you turn the key in the ignition switch, an additional power circuit is activated, and the engine starts.

  • The battery is dead;
  • The lock cylinders are faulty or dirty;
  • Locks froze in the cold due to moisture that accumulated on the seals;
  • The key is lost or broken;
  • The alarm went off from the inside and the driver was locked inside the car;
  • The car stalled in a traffic jam, the central locking was blocked;
  • The key fob is discharged, the car does not open;
  • The lock in the glove compartment is broken;
  • The trunk does not open;
  • The key broke in half in the door keyhole;
  • The gas tank cap does not come off;
  • The lock of the tank filler cap is broken.

There are many ways to open any car without a key. We offer you those that can be used in any conditions, while remembering that the best way to open a car is to entrust it to professionals.

How to close the starter from the pushrod?

Thus, it is possible to start a car engine if the traction relay or the starting device winding is faulty. This method is considered the most common among motorists. In order to start the starter from the pushrod, you will need a couple of assistants who will push the car, resting their hands on the trunk. At this time, the driver engages first gear and turns the key in the ignition. The starter should start the power unit.

Note that the greater the acceleration of the car while pushing, the faster the engine starting device will begin to spin its crankshaft, and the faster the car will start.

We are trying to make a “friend” without his “atrium”

TIP - before closing the starter, it is advisable to inspect it and make a diagnosis.

Initially, it would be good to try to find out the reasons for the failure of the starter - what if you are lucky and the problems associated with its failure can be eliminated yourself.

The most common breakdowns are the following:

  • Starter relay failure.
  • The solenoid relay does not operate fully.
  • Severe wear on the teeth of the Bendix gear, namely, the gear rotates, but does not engage with the teeth of the engine flywheel ring.
  • The stator winding in the starter burned out.

So, let’s start the “heart” of the car.

Method 1, or how to start a car from a push, or “from a pusher”?

Everything is quite simple, but at the same time very reliable. Its essence is that the driver needs to find at least a couple of people, let them be, for example, neighbors in a garage cooperative who sympathize with him. And they don’t need to be of strong build, the main thing here is the number of participants: the more, the better. The entire team (company) rests their hands on the trunk, rear pillars, etc., and begins to push the car, accelerating it. The driver, in turn, sitting behind the wheel, already with the ignition on and, better yet, with third gear engaged, as well as with the clutch depressed, after waiting for the car to accelerate, the clutch is already released. After this, the engine “sneezes” and starts. The higher the acceleration speed, the faster the engine will start.

Method 2 Also effective and popular among drivers. This auto-folk method of starting a car without a starter is called “towing” - this is when your iron friend is pulled by another vehicle on a tow rope until the engine starts.

With this method, it is important to remember that after starting the engine, the car will begin to accelerate and you must immediately depress the clutch and turn off the gear, but, of course, do not turn off the engine!

How can I close the starter directly?

You can close the starter directly by connecting to the battery or through contacts. Both options work if the device’s anchor is not damaged.

Closing the terminals with a screwdriver, pry bar or wrench

If the traction relay is faulty, the direct closure method is used with any metal rod of the required length. This could be a screwdriver, wrench or pry bar. Problems with the retractor are indicated by a characteristic clicking sound when turning the key in the ignition switch. The starter at this moment is unable to crank the crankshaft, since the Bendix teeth do not cling to the flywheel crown. By closing the starter's power terminals, it will be possible to send current directly to the electrical windings. A wrench or screwdriver will take over the functions of the traction relay.

Before doing this, be sure to put the car on the handbrake and in neutral to avoid accidents. The tool itself should have an insulated handle and a fairly thick shaft. Therefore, it is recommended to use one of the items described above. The pry bar or key can be wrapped with electrical tape at the gripping point.

Closing contacts B and S, M and B is strictly prohibited! Explanation: B – Bold or thick wire – constant voltage contact. On many starters it is closed with a protective rubber cap and marked “+12”. M – Motor or electric motor. S – Start, the contact is made in the form of a threaded outlet, petal or plug, often closed with a plastic tip, so it must be removed before forced closure. 8 – negative contact, connected to the body.

On some car models (VAZ 2109, 2110, 2114), in order to bridge the starter with a screwdriver, you need to dismantle the air filter and disconnect the chip placed on the contact group. After starting the engine, everything comes back together.

Possible consequences

The disadvantage of this method of resuscitating the starter is the risk of burning the car's ignition coil. For this reason, it is not recommended to repeat the procedure - once is enough. If you cannot start the engine, then you need to look for the problem elsewhere.

Another unpleasant moment: at the connection points of the screwdriver with the contacts, regardless of the amperage of the car, a current of 40-50 A is generated. Because of this, the tool’s rod can become stuck and give a strong kickback to the hand. Solution: without panic, use an open-end wrench to remove the negative terminal.

Connecting directly to the battery

A piece of copper cable, alligator clips and a flat plug is all that is needed to directly connect the starter to the battery. These three components are used to assemble a carrier that will make it possible to start the engine. You need to integrate a homemade device with a power cable going to the starter. It has a connector where you need to insert the wire.

Further actions:

  • put the car in neutral;
  • turn on the ignition;
  • connect the crocodile clip to the positive terminal of the battery.

Homemade carrier with a crocodile
If there are no other faults, the starter should work. After starting the power unit, you need to quickly disconnect the terminal from the battery. Pull out the manufactured wire from its connections and replace the removed plug. Everything is done simply, but caution is recommended. Otherwise, you may get burned or short circuit something.

The third method is closure

And finally, we come to the actual topic of this article: correctly closing the starter with a screwdriver. In this case, brute physical force or towing is not needed. It will be enough to arm yourself with a simple screwdriver, preferably with a long handle. Before moving directly to the process algorithm, let's dwell on the question: what is better to close the starter - with a screwdriver, wrench or pry bar? Let us note right away that a mount is an option for a rainy day when you don’t have a screwdriver or a key at hand. As a rule, a screwdriver and a wrench help in cases where the relay is faulty. The characteristic clicks coming from under the hood when turning the key in the ignition are full confirmation of this. The Bendix gear is not able to turn the crankshaft because the relay does not provide enough energy. It remains to close the starter, giving voltage directly to the windings. As mentioned above, it is advisable to arm yourself with a large screwdriver or wrench that would reach both power terminals of the relay in order to bridge them. Don’t forget to set the gearbox lever to idle and tighten the handbrake all the way. The key in the ignition switch must be turned half a turn so that the corresponding lights on the instrument panel come on. A screwdriver attached to the terminals in this case works like the relay itself. The method, as we see, is not tricky. But you must always be on your guard. The fact is that you can damage the coil. It easily fails if you do this several times in a row. It’s just that on classic contact systems the coil does not have the appropriate protection, as on non-contact systems. To protect the coil from burning out, it is recommended to do the following:

Closure

  • Ask the assistant to get into the car;
  • Have him put the ignition key in the ignition position while you close the contact.

Thus, having learned how to revive the starter yourself, you can safely go to the longest distances.

The problem will be solved in one minute. But then it will be necessary to visit a car repair shop, where the starter will undergo a thorough diagnosis by specialists. They will immediately determine the cause, eliminate it, and you will no longer fall under Murphy's Law. Although no one can guarantee that this will not happen after a certain period of time.

Disadvantages of the method

The main disadvantage of this method of starting the starter is that you can easily burn the ignition coil. That is why experts recommend carrying out this action only once. But sometimes the engine does not start using this method, so the reason lies much deeper.

It is also worth considering that in those places where the screwdriver comes into contact with the terminal, a current of up to 50 A is issued. It can easily become stuck, and it will also kick back into your hand; it can be quickly removed using an open-end wrench.

How to close the starter with a screwdriver?

This measure should be resorted to in the event of a malfunction of the traction relay. This is evidenced by a characteristic clicking sound in the engine compartment when turning the key in the ignition switch, when the relay is turned on, while the starter cannot give the crankshaft the required number of revolutions to ensure the engine starts due to the fact that the drive gear does not engage with the flywheel. In this case, it is necessary to apply voltage to the windings directly by bridging the starter power terminals using a screwdriver. In this case, the screwdriver takes on the role of a faulty traction relay.

Note! Before performing this procedure, be sure to put the car on the parking brake and put the gear in neutral. You need to use a screwdriver with a powerful working part and a well-insulated handle.

It is advisable to carry out the procedure together: one is behind the wheel of the car and turns on the ignition, the second at this time bridges the starter terminals with a screwdriver. This method is quite insidious, since there is a risk of burning the coil. Therefore, in order to avoid damage to it, you should not constantly perform this procedure if you were unable to start the engine the first time.

As you can see, the methods for closing the starter are quite simple and do not require the driver to have a certain amount of technical knowledge or a set of complex tools. But you can’t do it without helpers.

Car enthusiasts often wonder: how to close the starter with a screwdriver to start the engine

? And it occurs when the motor refuses to start due to the fact that the starter contacts are covered with an oxide film (strong dielectric), which prevents the normal flow of current. It becomes difficult to start the car without assistance.

Every car owner should know how to close the starter with a screwdriver in order to avoid trouble starting the engine. But before you learn this, you need to understand that this method is not effective in all cases. First you need to identify the causes of the malfunction.

Starter short circuit

In order to close the starter, you will need a screwdriver, wrench or other metal tool. In our case, consider the option with a screwdriver and.

Problems with the retractor relay are indicated by a peculiar click under the hood when you turn the key in the ignition. The clicking sound is a signal that the solenoid relay is turned on, but the overrunning clutch cannot turn the crankshaft. There is only one way out - close the starter so that voltage goes to the winding.

First you need to choose the right screwdriver

so that its length matches the distance between the terminals that will be closed.

Next, the checkpoint is placed

to neutral gear

, the handbrake is tightened all the way, the key is inserted into the ignition switch and turned in the desired direction.

After which the starter terminals are short-circuited. The key and the screwdriver work instead of the faulty relay, and the Bendix turns the crankshaft. As a result, the long-awaited engine start occurs.

Overall the method is simple

. But owners of cars from the 80s and 90s need to know that in contactless ignition systems, the switch controls the voltage supply to the coil, but in older ones there is no such control, and when the starter closes, the coil may break.

If you have to close the starter in the contact system, it is better to do it together

. One will need to turn the key in the ignition, and the second will need to close the starter contacts.

Basic starter failures

More experienced car enthusiasts know that the car may not start for a number of reasons that have nothing to do with the starter. But still, most often the “dog is buried” in it.

To clearly understand the essence of the problem, you should familiarize yourself with common starter malfunctions, which include:

  • burnt winding;
  • malfunctions in the relay;
  • overrunning clutch wear ();
  • oxidation of contacts.

With all these breakdowns, the engine will start with difficulty or even refuse to start. It is in this situation that you need to take action.

A little theory

In principle, everything is clear with the main question. The entire procedure for closing the starter is accessible and does not require special knowledge and practice. But most people may be wondering why the starter does not want to start the internal combustion engine?

The fact is that the solenoid relay has a solenoid, an electromagnetic coil and a contact group in its design. The latter, in turn, has a washer and two bolts (copper).

If the engine

affectionately called the “heart of the car,”
the starter
can safely be dubbed the “right atrium.”
When the starter fails, problems immediately arise with starting the engine
. Sitting in the cockpit, you simply won't be able to do this. But there are several reliable ways to get out of this situation.

First, let's look at the reasons for the failure of the starter

. You may be able to fix some damage on site.

  • The starter relay
    has failed ;
  • The solenoid relay
    has failed ;
  • The pendix is worn out, that is, the gear rotates and the starter does not connect to the engine flywheel
    ;
  • And finally, the worst thing is that the starter winding
    .

Let's move on directly to starting the engine with a non-working starter. There are actually few methods, but they work flawlessly.

The most common and easiest way

- push start the car. To do this, you will need volunteers in the form of sympathetic car enthusiasts (preferably strong guys with toned legs). The method is ingenious in its simplicity: turn on the ignition, engage first gear, a couple or three volunteers rest their hands on the trunk and begin to accelerate. At the thirtieth meter the engine will start, it all depends on the take-off speed of the pushers (the faster you push, the faster you will start the car). You can do without assistants if your health and strength allow. The algorithm is the same: ignition, first gear, get out of the car, rest your left hand on the front pillar, and hold the steering wheel with your right hand. Of course, this task is not an easy one, but in the absence of people there is nowhere to go;

Second way

- tugboat. Every novice and experienced motorist should have a tow rope in their trunk. We take it out, stop any car, hook the cable, get behind the wheel, turn on the ignition, first gear and wait. Be careful, when the car starts, it will certainly begin to accelerate. You need to immediately inform the tug driver that your iron horse has started working and there is no need to go further, and when it stops, do not forget to stop your car. Do not turn off the engine when you get out to unhook the cable, unless you want to repeat the towing procedure again;

Third way

Suitable for front wheel drive vehicles only. You will need a jack. Raise the front wheel, turn on the ignition, engage third or fourth gear and begin to turn the raised wheel with your hands. Of course, the method is not the most convenient, but when pushing alone is not possible, it can help you out;

Well, the last way

, which is suitable only for owners of old models of passenger cars (mainly UAZ, Moskvich and Zhiguli). In those days, cars were equipped with special handles. With the ignition on and neutral, turn the handle. There is a danger that the handle will suddenly move in the opposite direction when the engine starts. Therefore, you should be careful.

Russian motorists and owners of old used cars often have problems starting their cars. The culprit turns out to be not so much the starter as the elements of its inclusion and switching. The question automatically arises regarding how to connect the starter directly from the battery or something else. I wonder if this is possible to do?

Basic starter malfunctions

A starter is a device that allows the power unit to start.
You should know that the service life of the starter is only 5-6 years - this is about 2 times less than the service life of the engine. Therefore, starter diagnostics are relevant not only for cars that have been in operation for several years, but also for newly purchased vehicles. If the starter begins to function intermittently, it is necessary to find out the reason for this behavior. Since the starter device operates in the same circuit with other vehicle systems, its breakdowns can be either mechanical or electrical.

If the starter stops turning or turns very slowly, you should pay attention to the battery and electrical circuit:

  1. The battery is not charged.
  2. Poor contacts.
  3. Damage to the wire between the starter and battery.
  4. The oil in the crankcase does not meet the required viscosity.
  5. Broken contact group of the ignition switch.
  6. Broken wire and poor contact of the solenoid relay.
  • If the starter does not work or simply does not turn on, the reason may be: a broken relay or a short circuit in the starter winding.
  • If the starter armature rotates, but the starter does not turn the crankshaft, it may be a slipping freewheel.

If the starter does not turn off after starting, the reasons may be: wear of the bearings, jamming in the ignition switch, or jamming of the drives on the armature shaft. Such malfunctions can be corrected by replacing damaged elements.

If the starter begins to make noise, it may be that the drive gear has become disengaged or the starter pole has become loose.

The starter is subjected to high loads because it has to rotate the flywheel and start the piston group of the internal combustion engine. Therefore, it is necessary to treat it carefully and perform diagnostics to avoid breakdowns.

If the cause of the starter failure is a faulty relay, starter coil or solenoid relay, you can push start it, which will require a couple of helpers.

They must accelerate the car, resting against its trunk, and at this time you must turn on the ignition and first gear. To accelerate a passenger car to the required speed, as a rule, up to three people are needed.

The heavier the vehicle, the more people are needed to tow it.

If there are not enough people to accelerate the vehicle, the driver can also participate in the towing process. He will have to run with the left door open, holding the steering wheel with his right hand.

When the vehicle accelerates enough, you need to jump into the cabin while moving, press the clutch and engage 2nd gear. Then release the pedal smoothly, but without delay. Depending on the adjustment of the fuel system and its coherence, it may be necessary to press the gas pedal.

When the car starts, engage neutral gear and, if necessary, warm up the internal combustion engine to operating temperature.

If it is difficult to find the required number of pushers, towing the vehicle with another car will help start the engine. In this case, you will need an ordinary strong rope or a special cable, at least 3-4 meters long. The success of this event depends on the skill of the driver and the strength of acceleration. Some nuances are also affected by the following factors:

  1. Road surface.
  2. Condition of the driving wheel tires.
  3. Power unit temperature (warm/cold).
  4. Compression of the piston group.

Carburetor cars with a manual transmission are often subjected to a similar procedure. Starting their engines is safe and usually does not cause damage to the engine, which cannot be said about diesel and injection units. It is virtually impossible to push start a vehicle with an automatic transmission.

When your vehicle starts while towing, it will accelerate, so remember to brake when the vehicle in front is braking, and do not turn off the engine when you get out of the car to unhook the cable.

You can close the starter with a screwdriver only if the cause of the breakdown is the solenoid relay. You can find out about such a breakdown by a characteristic clicking sound from the engine compartment when the driver turns the key.

This means that the retractor relay is turned on, but the drive gear does not turn the crankshaft. The only way out in this case is to bridge the starter using a screwdriver and thus apply voltage to the windings.

To close the starter with a screwdriver, move the gearshift lever to neutral and apply the brake. Under these conditions, the screwdriver will function as a pull-in relay. Insert a screwdriver between the power terminals, shorting them.

To start the car directly through the starter, it is advisable to ask an assistant for help. This will make things easier. When the assistant inserts the screwdriver, you will close the contacts.

How else can you start the car if the starter does not turn?

There are other ways to start a car without a starter: by towing or using a pushrod.

Important! Both options are not suitable for cars with automatic transmission, since due to the design features of the automatic transmission, negative consequences are possible.

Pushing is a more common method among motorists, but requires the help of several people.

Towing a car will require a strong cable. It connects to the hook of another car, after which it starts moving. If there are no ignition problems or other engine malfunctions, it almost always starts.

It’s just important to follow a few rules:

  • The leading vehicle should not start from a place abruptly, at high speed, as the bumper can be torn out of place or the cable can break;
  • the towed car is prohibited from sharply braking or stopping while the leading car is driving, which also threatens to break the cable and other consequences;
  • Do not turn off the engine while unhooking the cable, otherwise it may not start again.

The “push” method is suitable for any model, the main thing is that several pairs of hands firmly rest on the trunk or hood of the car. It is advisable to set the gearbox to 2nd, 4th or reverse gear. The faster the car accelerates, the greater the chance of starting the engine. Therefore, it is recommended to push the product on the descent.

Another starting option is suitable for cars with front-wheel drive. It is necessary to lift the car and hang one of the wheels. Then turn it all the way away from the car, wrap a towing cable or a strong rope 5 meters long around the tire. Set to third gear, turn on the ignition. Pull the cord sharply, spinning the wheel. After starting the engine, set the gear lever to neutral speed. This method is carried out with an assistant - one person sits in the car, the other pulls the rope.

Some rear-wheel drive cars, for example, the VAZ 2107, can be started with a crooked starter - the crank. Having inserted one end of it into a specially provided hole on the body, you should quickly rotate it in one direction.

The starter is a simple but extremely important component of internal combustion engine vehicles. 90% of cases of difficult starting are explained by problems with oxidized contacts, broken wires or electrical faults. Therefore, it is first recommended to audit these components.

Forced closure of starter terminals

The starter can be connected directly not only using the battery. For example, if problems arise with the switching routed from the ignition switch, then you can turn on the starter by closing the contacts on the relay with a long screwdriver.

Now let's learn more about how to do this. Below is a diagram with 3 starter control contacts and 1 negative contact number 8 (it is connected to the housing).

The control terminal S is a petal-shaped terminal. First you need to find this contact. He is responsible for the start.

Then we deal with the other two contacts: a potential of plus 12 is marked on B. A thick wire goes to it. You will need to close contacts B and S. This is done using a long screwdriver.

Contact M is responsible for the electric motor.

Attention. You cannot hold the screwdriver for a long time - only for a short time and always after the car’s gearbox is set to idle! Under no circumstances should contacts M and B be closed!

The control terminal B, as a rule, is closed with a rubber cap, and the spade contact S is hidden with a plastic plug, which is removed before carrying out the manipulation.

  1. Before closing the starter, set the gearbox to neutral speed so that when starting the engine the car does not move forward or backward.
  2. Do not touch the metal pin of the screwdriver to the relay housing, otherwise a short circuit will occur.
  3. Do not close contacts M and B.

The starter is accessible from under the bottom of the car. In some cases, standard protection may be installed. Then it will need to be dismantled.

How to quickly close the starter with a screwdriver or other means

Many motorists have to deal with problems related to the vehicle starter at least once in their lives. The starter stubbornly refuses to work as before, although it itself is not damaged (the solenoid relay becomes the problem). We will look at what to do in this case and how to revive the starter in our article. There is Murphy’s law, known to all people on earth, as it is also popularly called the law of meanness. The car breaks down at the most inopportune moment, when you urgently need to go somewhere, and time is running out. In this case, there is nothing left to do but close the starter contacts in order to revive this important element of the car.

I read it on the forums, it’s not just me who has this problem, maybe it will help someone else. I suffered for a long time with the problem of starting the car when it was hot. The problem was especially noticeable in the summer. At times the starter simply refused to turn, you turn the key, there’s a click, the instrument panel dims a little and that’s it... the starter is silent. The problem is not constant, this can happen once a week, maybe every other day. You can drive the car all day, turn it off, start it, everything works, and at some inopportune moment it stops responding to the key. You stop at a gas station or at a store and that’s it. You start running with a screwdriver into the hood and closing the contacts on the retractor, and the screwdriver starts it up. If you start it with a screwdriver and then turn it off, you can start it with the key without any problems and again you can drive for an unknown number of days or hours because... The problem is floating and intermittent. While searching for the cause, I went through the starter, changed the brushes, installed a new retractor (but in vain), cleaned all the contacts, cleaned the contact group of the ignition switch. I did all this in stages because... After each action, the problem seems to disappear, but only for a while, you drive for a month and again it’s unexpected. As I found out, the problem arose at the slightest drop in the battery, like turning on a Carlson, when the engine warmed up, or when listening to music with the engine turned off. After that, there was simply not enough voltage through the ignition switch, somewhere there was apparently a voltage loss from bad contacts, perhaps the contact group needed to be changed and not cleaned (but it’s not a fact that a new one would have lasted long). I decided to install a starter relay and at the same time made additional weight. I bought a 4-pin 30A relay, five female connectors, one male connector and a couple of ring connectors.

Method for VAZ 2107

This machine has a starter that can be started using a special handle. To do this, insert it into the provided hole in the body and by quickly rotating the car the car should start.

In the end, I would like to add that all the described methods should be used when, for various reasons, it is not possible to get professional help or tow the car to a repair shop. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you contact professionals, and before solving the problem yourself, carefully study the problem that has arisen and its solution in order to further avoid negative consequences. Good luck on the roads!

Diagnostics

It is necessary before the motorist wants to take active action. If you can identify the reasons for this behavior of the starter, then they can be eliminated right on the spot, without even going to a car service center and without wasting extra time. The basics of starter repair teach us that the most complex breakdowns are the following:

  • The starter relay has failed;
  • The solenoid relay has deteriorated;
  • The bendix is worn out;
  • The starter winding is burnt out.

If at least one of the above breakdowns is confirmed, you have to look for ways to start a car with a non-working starter. They exist, but they are very few. But they will help you cope with the problem 100 percent.

Forced starting of the starter by closing the contacts

In order to put knowledge into practice, you will need the help of a partner (preferably) and a long screwdriver or wrench. The idea is that the metal base of the tool needs to close the power contacts of the starter and apply voltage to its winding directly.

  1. The partner driving the car turns the key to the extreme right position, turning on the ignition.

Closing the starter contact with a screwdriver

Before starting work, it is extremely important to check the gear shift lever. It should be in a neutral position. The handbrake lever should be raised and locked as much as possible.

A spark may occur

Alternative methods (if there is no key)

In addition to this method, there are several more. One of them involves starting the starter from the passenger compartment. To do this, you will need to remove the plastic panel located under the steering wheel of the car. Separate the bundle of wires going to the ignition switch from it.

Disassembling the steering column mechanism

First of all, we are interested in the wire going to ground (black or green, sometimes yellow with a black stripe). You can correctly determine whether it is correct or not using a multimeter. To do this, the tip is connected to the one we are interested in, the second to the body of the machine. A zero on the device screen will confirm that this is the correct wire. Its stripped end is isolated and moved to the side.

Power on the VAZ-2114 car is supplied by a red or yellow wire, but it is best to check this with a multimeter.

The one responsible for the starter is determined as follows: the power wire is closed with the remaining ones. The one from which the mechanism will work and will be its supply wire.

The remaining beam is connected to the positive one, after which it is struck with the “starter” one. If determined correctly, the engine should start. It is extremely important when starting this way not to short-circuit the wires for a long time, as this will drain the battery very quickly.

Important! When starting the starter, the car must be in neutral and have the handbrake applied.

Push launch (classic)

Another way to start the engine on a VAZ-2114 is to start it “with a pusher”.

The gearbox is moved to neutral , the driver sits behind the wheel, and two or three assistants push the car. Having accelerated the car a little, the first or second gear is engaged, the ignition key is turned to the engine start mode.

This launch can be used when towing a vehicle. But at the same time, it is extremely important to take into account the fact that a started car will immediately accelerate, so you need to keep this in mind and not drive into the bumper of the towing car.

Unscrew the ends of the nuts. To do this, bridge the two contacts.

That is, fuel is not supplied to the working chamber. A suitable place for this is the stud of the washer reservoir.

In most cars, these units are non-separable. Most often, electromagnetic circuits burn out.

To carry out reverse dismantling, you must first mark the disconnected terminals. Almost everyone has heard about this detail, but not many understand the principle of its operation. Place the wire with a ring terminal for 8 mm on the positive side of the starter and tighten it with a nut. VAZ starter relay wiring diagram.
