AVTOVAZ installs the same type of power units on its models, so the process of changing the oil in the Lada Kalina, Priora, Grant, Vesta, Niva or XRAY engine is similar. Let's look at the process of changing engine oil in VAZ engines, and also talk about some of the features of this procedure.

AVTOVAZ installs the following engines on Lada cars:

The maintenance regulations state that the first oil change in the engine should be done after 3 thousand kilometers, and then at each maintenance (after 15 thousand kilometers) or once a year, whichever comes first.

You will need : warm up the engine to operating temperature, prepare new engine oil and filter, a “17” wrench, an oil filter remover (or a large screwdriver), clean rags and an empty container (4 l).

How to drain engine oil

For convenience, it is recommended to drive the car onto a pit/overpass, then:

  1. Unscrew the oil filler cap on the engine.
  2. Clean the oil pan from dirt, install an empty container and unscrew the drain plug from the bottom of the car using a 17mm wrench. Be careful not to burn yourself!

After all the oil has run out (about 10 minutes), clean the plug from dirt and screw it back in.

Oil in manual transmission Lada Vesta

Taking into account the fact that the manual transmission version of the Lada Vesta remains the most common and in demand, next we will consider the issue of changing the oil on the manual transmission, as well as what is poured into the Vesta box from the factory.

First of all, although the manufacturer claims that this gearbox is maintenance-free and is designed for the entire service life of the car, many car enthusiasts claim that the oil filled at the factory is far from the best quality. When replacing, there is often a significant loss and deterioration in mining properties after 40-60 thousand km. mileage It turns out that with long-term use of such oil without replacement, a reduction in service life and other problems are inevitable.

At the factory, the Vesta box is filled with TM-4-12 SAE 76W-85 GL-4 oil. This product is semi-synthetic, designed for year-round use (all-season gear oil). This oil also contains a package of imported additives and is designed to operate at temperatures from -40 to +45 degrees Celsius. The total oil volume in the Lada Vesta gearbox is 2.2 liters.

As for changing the oil, you can either try to purchase exactly the same fluid or choose other analogues

It is important to take into account a number of features. Many experts recommend using semi-synthetic ZIC G-FF 75W-85 in the Lada Vesta transmission

You can also pay attention to fully synthetic oils

Otherwise, “inappropriate” oil can lead to problems with the gearbox, failure of individual elements, increased wear and damage to synchronizers, etc. For reference, if the manufacturer specifies that only GL-4 oils should be poured into the gearbox, the use of higher class oils such as GL-5 can cause rapid failure of the gearbox synchronizers.

How to change the oil in a Lada Vesta gearbox

Having figured out what kind of oil the factory pours into the Vesta manual transmission, as well as how to select analogues for replacement, let’s move on to replacing the transmission fluid itself. In order to change the oil in the Vesta gearbox or Lada Vesta AMT (robotic automated mechanics), you need to prepare:

  • necessary keys;
  • slotted screwdriver;
  • container for draining waste (up to 3 liters);
  • rags (clean rags);
  • hose with a diameter of 20 mm and a funnel;
  • 4-6 liters of fresh oil (with reserve for topping up or flushing);

The oil change itself in the Lada Vesta gearbox comes down to the following:

  • lift the car on a lift or drive it into a viewing hole;
  • the car must be positioned level, without slopes;
  • remove the engine protection;
  • Next, you will need to unscrew the oil level control plug in the gearbox;
  • then you should find the drain plug and place a prepared container under it to drain the waste;
  • then you need to unscrew the drain plug with a 8mm square wrench and wait until the transmission fluid completely drains into the container;
  • after complete drainage, the drain plug should be screwed in; if necessary, the seal can be replaced;
  • Now a hose with a funnel is inserted into the control hole, after which fresh oil is carefully poured in small portions;
  • when the level rises to the edge of the hole, the replacement can be considered complete;
  • Now the inspection hole plug can be tightened and the engine protection can be put in place.

How to replace the oil filter

The oil filter is located behind the engine.

We place an empty container under it and unscrew the oil filter counterclockwise using a puller. Another way to unscrew the oil filter is to pierce its housing with a screwdriver (closer to the bottom of the filter, so as not to damage the engine fitting), unscrew the filter, using the screwdriver as a lever.

Fill the new filter halfway with new engine oil and lubricate the sealing ring with it. Then install the oil filter, tightening it by hand until the O-ring comes into contact with the cylinder block. After this, tighten the oil filter another 3/4 turn.

Magnetic plug Lada Vesta for engine crankcase

During operation and operation of the engine, metal shavings and dust inevitably form in the oil pan. To clean engine oil, your car is equipped with an engine oil filter. But even this does not always effectively cope with engine oil contaminants.

The Lada Vesta magnetic plug will help you cope with metal shavings. You can make it yourself, or you can order a ready-made one. Yes, by the way, such a plug can be installed both on the engine and on the gearbox. How is everything done? Let's figure it out.

Self-production of a magnetic plug Lada Vesta

If you go the hard way, you can make a magnetic crankcase drain plug with your own hands. It is made using a neodymium magnet, which can be bought on AliExpress. Magnet size N52 Ф12*10mm. Price about $3. Verified seller, fast delivery.

First of all, the cork is washed well from deposits and dirt. And only after that a magnet is installed in the drain plug.

To ensure everything is secure, the magnet is glued using simple epoxy glue or riveted. Next, the finished plug can be installed in the crankcase and engine oil can be added.

Tests show that even after 4 thousand kilometers, a small amount of metal dust accumulates on the magnet.

Ready-made magnetic plug Lada Vesta

For those who don't want to reinvent the wheel, there is a ready-made solution. Even two options. You can order a ready-made pallet plug from AliExpress. You can buy it here: magnetic crankcase plug for Lada Vesta. The parameters of this plug are M16X1.5.

The second option involves installing a ready-made plug from Renault cars. You can find a magnetic plug by article number:

7703075210, 7903075033, 7703075348.

And the finished product looks like this:

All options are approximately the same in cost, so it’s up to you to decide which one to choose.

How to add motor oil to the engine

We pour new oil into the engine through the oil filler neck; approximately 3.2 liters of oil will be required (about 0.3 liters of oil will still remain in the engine). We control the level using the oil dipstick (the oil level should be between the MIN and MAX marks).

Screw on the cap and start the engine for 1-2 minutes. We check that there are no leaks from under the plug and oil filter, and wait until the oil pressure indicator on the instrument cluster goes out.

Control check: stop the engine and check the oil level with a dipstick, if necessary, add oil to the specified level.

Stages of replacing lubricant Lada Vesta

Changing the oil on this model is the same as on most cars. But there are always some nuances, which will be described in the article below.

This LADA model is equipped with 1.6 liter VAZ-21129 and 1.8 liter VAZ-21179 petrol engines. Both of them have 16 valves, like other modifications:

  • Lada Vesta;
  • Lada Vesta Cross;
  • Lada Vesta SW (Lada Vesta SW);
  • Lada Vesta SW Cross.

The replacement process for these engines and modifications will be the same. But we will make a reservation that the described instructions are carried out on a car with a volume of 1.6 liters.

Draining waste fluid

To drain oil from a Lada Vesta, it is advisable to have a pit or overpass, since the main actions will take place from below the car. Therefore, we place the car above the technological ditch, go down into it and remove the engine protection from below. To do this, you need to unscrew the 13 head bolts by 10mm.

When everything is ready, we proceed directly to the drain:

  1. Raise the hood, then find the filler neck on the engine and unscrew the plug (Fig. 1).

    Fig.1 Oil filler neck

  2. Now we go down under the car and place a waste container in the drainage area. You can use a cut canister or an old bucket.
  3. There are many complaints about the original drain plug regarding unscrewing, so it is better to prepare a new one for replacement (order code 21120101106100). The old one can be unscrewed with a 8mm hexagon, but there is a high probability that the splines will be torn off. Therefore, first you can take a hammer and gently tap it through a wooden plank. After this, the plug should come out easier. If the plug does not fit anywhere, you can use a gas wrench; it is located below the pan, so there is a place to grab it (Fig. 2).

    Fig.2 Drain plug

  4. On cars with an automatic transmission, the pan has a different shape, as well as a plug, which can be unscrewed with a regular key or a 17mm socket (Fig. 3).

    Fig.3 Drain plug on AMT

  5. Now you need to unscrew the oil filter. You can try to do this from above from the engine compartment. There seems to be access, but the filter often gets stuck, there is not enough hand strength, and you can’t get to it with a puller (Fig. 4).

    Fig.4 Oil filter on top

  6. Another option is to do it from below; installing a puller here will not be difficult (Fig. 5). But before that, it is advisable to unscrew the crankshaft position sensor using a 10mm wrench. We also remove the wires going to it. Now you shouldn’t break anything, you can unscrew the filter itself.

    Fig.5 Oil filter from below

To unscrew the filter element, it is advisable to have a special puller. If it is not available, you can try to unscrew the filter using improvised means. For these purposes, you can use, for example, an old alternator belt, a regular belt, a bicycle chain or a simple screwdriver.

Unscrewing the oil filter using improvised means

This method will allow you to drain as much of the used oil as possible, after which you can proceed to further actions. The main thing is not to forget, everything that we unscrewed must be put back in place.

Flushing the lubrication system

Engine flushing on a Lada Vesta car should only be carried out in exceptional cases, which include:

  1. Purchasing a used car when you cannot be sure of the quality and regularity of lubricant replacements.
  2. During operation, the service replacement interval was repeatedly exceeded.
  3. Engine operation with constant frequent overheating, which contributes to coking and other deposits.
  4. In cases of switching to another type of oil, for example from synthetic to semi-synthetic.

There are several types of flushes for the Lada Vesta engine:

  • Five- or seven-minute, capable of cleaning even the most difficult deposits. They must be used very carefully and strictly follow the instructions printed on the packaging. It is recommended to use them only when absolutely necessary. Since there is a high probability of causing premature wear of the sealing seals. And also clog the oil channels with particles of washed away carbon deposits.
  • Special compounds that are added to the oil several hundred kilometers before the expected change. They are more gentle, but there is also a possibility of clogging of the oil channels.
  • Flushing oil is the most gentle method of cleaning the engine from the inside. This composition is poured after draining the waste, the engine runs for 15-20 minutes, after which the liquid with deposits is drained. The absence of aggressive additives in the wash composition gently cleans the engine, but is not able to remove heavy contaminants.
  • Regular oil that you are going to use when changing. This method is not so popular due to its high cost.

Before washing your Lada Vesta, you should weigh all the pros and cons. And also understand that it will not be possible to completely drain the liquid. Some of it will remain in the channels, which will then mix with the new oil.

Installing a filter, filling in new engine fluid

If the Lada Vesta lubrication system is sealed and does not require repair work to eliminate leaks, you can proceed to adding fresh oil. In addition to the oil itself, we will need a new gasket-washer for the drain plug 21080101106200. As well as the original Livna oil filter 2108-1012005-08. But recently, dealers have begun installing LADA 2105-1012005-82 filters.

When everything is ready, let's move on to the bay:

  1. Replace the drain plug with a new washer.
  2. We tighten and put the oil filter in place. Pre-lubricate the rubber sealing ring with fresh oil.
  3. Pour new oil into the filler neck.
  4. We check the level on the dipstick; it should be between the MIN and MAX marks.
  5. We start the engine, let it run for 10-15 seconds, then turn it off.
  6. After 5 minutes, check the level with a dipstick and top up if necessary.

There are several opinions regarding replacing the oil filter. Many car owners advise filling it with new oil before installation. However, nothing is said about this in the official Lada Vesta operating instructions. And also in information from global filter manufacturers it is recommended to simply lubricate the o-ring.

What influences the need for an oil change?

First of all, it loses little of its characteristics when operating in critical temperature conditions. The reason for this may be regular trips over short distances, when the engine does not warm up thoroughly and condensation occurs in it.

The same thing happens when the car is idle for long periods of time. The accumulated condensate comes into contact with fuel combustion residues and forms aggressive substances leading to corrosion of moving parts.

The constant “start-stop” mode is no less harmful to the oil. This kind of driving is typical for modern cities, where traffic jams are becoming commonplace. Sudden starts and stops lead to overheating of the oil and loss of its basic properties.

Constant loads on the engine, such as driving over rough terrain or towing a trailer, lead to premature oil thickening. Country roads and dusty areas lead to rapid clogging of the filter.

The complete or incomplete combustion of the fuel depends on what fuel is used in the car. Residues form carbon deposits, which render the oil unusable. Idle operation of the engine also leads to overheating of the oil, and consequently to the loss of its basic qualities.

And finally, the reason for a premature oil change may be a simple leak due to a loose plug or damage to the oil system.

In such cases, changing the oil on a Lada Vesta yourself will save time and money. This procedure is not particularly difficult. But, when working independently, some nuances may arise.

Today I only walked 555 km, at 3000 I’ll do something like 0. Firstly, upon purchase they gave a coupon of 1800r then-0. Secondly, the foreman at the delivery office justified: like, whatever they pour at the factory, and since you will be serviced by us, come and fill it with oil and everything will be ok)

If you plan to drive a car for 250,000-30,000 km. then of course you need to change it, if you are an altruist and care about the future owner of your car, then you definitely need to change it. If in three or four years you will be updating your car, and the annual mileage is no more than 15,000, then why change it? I didn't change...

I drove my previous car for 5 years, the previous one was owned for 7 years, so I’ll have to take care of it)))

I changed everything too. 3000 gearbox, 7000 engine

I changed the oil in the engine and gearbox to the ones shown in the photo and the man oil filter. Plus the mechanic handed me the suspension. Did that 0 with a mileage of 2700 km. I went to Ladacenter Kupchino.

I changed it to 3t/km the first time, then to 6t/km, to 15t/km TO1 and now I’m going to change it to 22t/km. It definitely won’t harm the car)) Funnily enough, after scheduled maintenance 1, which was done at the OD, a representative of that OD calls me and says, according to our assumptions, intermediate maintenance 0 is suitable for you, I laughed heartily)))

I don't feel sorry, I changed it. It definitely won’t be worse, but maybe better)

I changed all the liquids to synthetics at 3000 because I found out they said all the mineral water was filled in the box. Everything came together crystal clear.

To do or not to do is your personal business) I changed. What and when I changed, everything is described in detail in the BZ

Oil in engines creates a protective film, creating conditions for the normal operation of moving parts. At the same time as lubricating the mechanisms, it washes and cleans them of dirt and carbon deposits. The service life of the engine and gearbox depends on how often the oil in the car is changed. To find out when to change the oil in a Lada Vesta, you need to proceed from several basic parameters.

Manufacturers of Lada Vesta recommend the following oil change periods: the first change is made during scheduled maintenance scheduled for 30 thousand km. This figure is determined by the new engine and components that allow the oil to retain its main functions longer. Further, the oil is changed every 15 thousand km. Recommended deadlines do not always coincide with reality.

Synthetic oils of foreign brands

In addition to domestic manufacturers who have received approval for AvtoVAZ oil, Lada Vesta engines use synthetic lubricant from foreign companies, which is not approved, but has good characteristics.

Castrol Edge 5W-30 is a synthetic motor oil. The brand belongs to BP - British Petroleum. The price of a 4-liter canister is from 2,700 rubles.

SHELL is a joint company with British and Dutch share capital. The Lada Vesta engine uses SHELL Helix Ultra ECT 5W-30 oil. The cost of a 4-liter canister is 2,600 rubles.

The American corporation owns and uses MOBIL Super 3000 X1 5W-40. The price of a 4-liter canister is 2000 rubles.

MOBIL Super 3000 X1 5W-40. Photo source:

According to owner reviews, imported synthetic oils have improved lubricating and cleaning properties. The cost of a 4-liter canister of domestic synthetic lubricant 5W-30 is 1,300 rubles.

When is an oil change required?

The procedure for replacing the lubricant in the Lada Vesta internal combustion engine should be carried out in accordance with the oil change regulations - once every 15 thousand kilometers. Under difficult operating conditions, the replacement period is reduced to 8-10 thousand kilometers.

In order for the engine to work for a long time, in addition to replacing it according to the kilometers traveled, you need to check the oil. The main signs that indicate the need for a change are:

  • Black liquid;
  • Presence of metal shavings;
  • The smell of burning.

↑ Replacement process

The first oil change in a Lada Vesta car should be done after approximately 1.5-2 thousand kilometers. This is due to the fact that the factory fluid in the engine is only needed for break-in. Further, this process is carried out every 15 thousand km. This is the number indicated in the vehicle documentation. But practice shows that the question of when to change engine oil may have a different answer. Experts recommend updating the petroleum product in the internal combustion engine every 7-8 thousand km.

The required volume of fluid depends on the type of engine installed on the machine. Today the following options exist:

  • 1.6-liter engine, requiring 3.2 liters with an automatic transmission and 4.4 liters with a manual transmission;
  • 1.8-liter internal combustion engine, into which 4.4 liters must be filled.

But you don’t have to pay much attention to the reference information, because with each replacement it is necessary to check the oil level using a dipstick. When filling, you should follow the minimum and maximum marks. The liquid level should be between them.

Semi-synthetic oils

Semi-synthetic lubricants are used for forced engines running on gasoline and diesel fuel and turbocharged power units. Oils are more effective than synthetic ones when starting a cold power unit.

In addition to the domestic semi-synthetic LUKOIL Genesis Advanced 10W-40, which does not have AvtoVAZ approval, the following oil can be poured into the Lada Vesta engine:

  • SHELL Helix HX7 10W-40;
  • Castrol Magnatec 10W-40.

Imported lubricants also do not have the approval of the Tolyatti plant. The cost of a 4-liter canister does not exceed 1,500 rubles, which is an advantage of semi-synthetics.

Sequence of actions when changing the oil yourself

  1. We place the car on the inspection hole (hydraulic lift), open the hood, and warm up the engine to operating temperature.
  2. We provide priority safety measures by securing the rear row of wheels with wheel chocks.
  3. Open the filler neck and locate the vacuum.
  4. We find a mud shield under the bottom of the car and unscrew 13 bolts to “10” around the perimeter.

Types of oils depending on viscosity and manufacturer

AvtoVAZ recommends using domestic oils with a viscosity of 5w40 for Lada Vesta:

  • Rosneft;
  • Lukoil Lux.

We recommend: How to install fog lights: connection diagram

When a car is being serviced, the service center will definitely fill one of them. However, many car owners believe that to improve the dynamic qualities of the car it is better to use foreign lubricants.

The Lada Vesta engine will work great on Mobil products. For a new car this is 0w40. When the car has driven more than 100,000 km, the engine must be filled with oils with viscosity values:

  • 5w30;
  • 5w40.

Among other brands, compositions with a viscosity of 5w30 are suitable for Vesta - Motul Specific DEXO s2, Shell HELIX HX8.
