Motorists of this century are puzzled by how the lubricating fluid in the unit of their own car is replaced, because since 2006, cars began to be produced with CVT CVT transmissions. Many Nissan Teana J32 owners argue about whether it is worth replacing the fluid in the variator, and how to do it. If we approach the issue from many angles, we can say that the new oil is still better than the old one, and it will not cause any harm to the car, even if the replacement is made ahead of time. Not at all, such a replacement brings extremely positive results, since there is no need to purchase a new variator.

Gearboxes installed on the second generation Nissan Teana (J32)
The main years of production of Teana-2 were from 2008 to 2013; for some time, assembly of this model continued to be carried out in Iran and Taiwan.
For all regions, the car was supplied only with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) from Jatco, but depending on the type of engine and year of manufacture of the car, different modifications of the variator were provided:
- JF011E, another name – RE0F10A, was installed in tandem with a 2.5-liter V6 VQ25DE engine (front-wheel drive) or with a 4-cylinder power unit of the same volume QR25DE (4WD all-wheel drive);
- JF016E (RE0F10D), also came with a 2.5L 4-cylinder internal combustion engine, but after restyling (starting from 2012);
- JF010E (RE0F09B), intended for cars with 3.5-liter engines.
It should be noted that there are few Teana-2 sedans with the JF016E gearbox in Russia, and they are mostly right-hand drive. This box began to be installed en masse on the next generation model L33.
Therefore, with 2.5L engines, JF011E gearboxes were mainly supplied in three modifications, depending on the year of manufacture and the type of power unit (310201XF8E or 310201XT4A - with VQ25DE internal combustion engine, 31020-1XT6C - with QR25DE engine).
Therefore, if you want to change the oil in a Nissan Teana J32 automatic transmission, then check, most likely the car has a CVT.
Which oil to choose for Nissan cars?
The original oil in the Nissan variator has the following markings: CVT NS-1, CVT NS-2, CVT NS-3. NS-1 is a first generation synthetic designed for Jatco continuously variable transmissions. It is poured into the boxes of Nissan cars produced before 2006 - Primera, Cube, March, etc.
NS-2 was developed for Hyper CVT gearboxes installed on cars after 2006 - Qashqai, X-Trail, Teana, Murano, Note, etc.
NS-3 will be required for 2012-2013 cars. release with continuously variable transmission. Used for the following Nissan models - Pathfinder, Teana, Serena, Altima.
Other manufacturers of CVT oil
Filling a Nissan CVT with non-original fluid is a risky undertaking. Incompatibility with factory lubricant, lack of necessary additives affects the service life of the box, and its repair is an expensive procedure. There are several analog options on sale that have proven themselves among Nissan car owners:
Idemitsu CVTF - designed for Jatco CVTs. In the list of relevant fluids, the manufacturer indicates the entire line of Nissan transmission fluids. Ravenol CVTF NS2/J1 Fluid is an oil of German origin, designed for use in JF010E and JF011E CVTs. A distinctive feature is green color. Nissan models for which the fluid is designed are Qashqai (Dualis), X-Trail, Serena, Lafesta. Febi Bilstein CVT is another German brand that is officially supplied to the Mercedes-Benz auto concern. The manufacturer claims the oil is compatible with original fluids for Nissan CVTs.

Complete oil change in the Nissan Teana j32 variator
One of the most important processes in updating transmission lubrication is preparation for work. First of all, the owner of a Nissan Teana needs to prepare his car for the upcoming manipulations. The vehicle is positioned in the same manner as for checking the oil level.
Important to consider as part of safety precautions! Under no circumstances should the technical fluid be drained until it has cooled down. The boiling point of transmission oil is 120 degrees; when the engine is running, the liquid heats up almost to the limit. If you start working with such a hot substance, you will inevitably get serious burns on your hands. Therefore, before starting to work with the Nissan Teana j32 variator, you should stop the engine and wait until it cools down.
While the technical fluid is cooling, you can prepare the necessary tools and items:
- Pliers;
- Screwdrivers;
- A funnel that matches the diameter of the filler hole in the Nissan Teana variator;
- Towels or dry wipes;
- Wrenches for working with plugs and washers.
As soon as the engine has cooled down, you can begin the basic operations of changing the oil in the Nissan Teana j32 variable transmission.
Oil selection
Car owners are not least concerned about the question: “How to choose the right oil for a variator?” Transmission lubricants for the Nissan Teana CVT gearbox can be divided into 2 types:
- Originals - technical fluids produced by the manufacturer of the vehicle in question;
- Analogues are lubricants produced by other manufacturers, but suitable for Nissan Teana cars according to a number of characteristics.
When approaching the question of which oil is preferable to fill, we can confidently say that the best choice would be the original fill. One of the available types of original oils is Nissan NS-2 “KLE5200004EU”. To completely update the technical fluid in a car’s variator, you will need about 8 liters of this substance.
Step by step oil change
Step-by-step instructions for a complete oil change in the Nissan Teana j-32 variator are provided below:
- Stage 1 - draining waste material: Remove the protective shield;
- Place a bucket, canister or basin for draining;
- Open the drain valves and unscrew the plugs;
- Allow the waste fluid to drain freely. Draining the oil is a rather lengthy process, because the natural texture of this liquid is quite viscous, and the recycled material also thickens significantly;
- Make sure the drain plugs are sufficiently tight. It is necessary to secure the drain plugs with washers;
How often do you change the oil in the variator?
It is no coincidence that manufacturers have placed an emphasis on continuously variable transmissions when designing new car models. Due to smooth gear shifting, the CVT reduces the load on the engine. In addition, recent studies have shown that, on average, a car with a CVT consumes an order of magnitude less fuel than a similar vehicle with an automatic transmission under the same conditions. In some cases, savings reach 20%. In general, operating a car with such a gearbox is a real pleasure, especially for novice drivers. After all, it physically does not have a clutch pedal, which frees a person from the need to constantly independently disconnect the transmission from the engine. But you should understand that more comfortable driving implies a completely different service.
The process of changing the oil in a variator is identical to how the oil in an automatic transmission is changed. But in terms of tolerances and other characteristics, oils for automatic transmissions and CVTs differ significantly. Stable operation of a continuously variable transmission is possible only with oil of appropriate quality and technical parameters. In this case, ATF should be selected based on the manufacturer’s instructions: new oil should be taken according to the make and model of the car, excluding “combined” options. All modern cars are equipped with a special meter on the dashboard that you should rely on. For most production cars, manufacturers have established an ATF change frequency of once every 60 thousand km. However, keep in mind that this distance applies to vehicles operating under “ideal conditions.”
We recommend paying attention not only to mileage, but also to ride comfort:
- When moving from a standstill, the car jerks. In general, jerking and jerking are not typical for the normal operation of the variator. Typically, this behavior of the car indicates a transmission malfunction. Most often, the culprit of the disease is the pump pressure reducing valve, which can become stuck in the open or closed position due to metal shavings clogging it.
- The box overheats and goes into emergency mode. Surely the old transmission fluid has already lost its properties and has ceased to fulfill its obligations.
- Noisy operation of the gearbox. At any moment, the variator can hum, either because of a trifle or for a serious reason. Sometimes one change of ATF is enough to return the CVT to its previous silent operation. But in more severe cases, worn bearings will need to be replaced.
When the manufacturer set the optimal frequency - 60 thousand kilometers - he did not take into account the operating characteristics (quality of roads, gasoline), driving style and character. Slipping, driving in start-stop mode, accelerating and stopping from traffic light to traffic light can already be considered “difficult conditions”. Therefore, ideally, the interval between replacements of variator technical fluid should be reduced to 30-40 thousand km.
Nissan CVT oil
For owners of Nissan cars with a CVT gearbox, the concern has prescribed the following ATFs - CVT NS-1, CVT NS-2 and CVT NS-3 . The main feature of these oils is their resistance to oxidation, which makes it possible to operate the vehicle in conditions of constant changes in ambient temperature without fear of the condition of the working fluid of the box.
First generation synthetic oil CVT NS-1 is a product aimed at cars with CVT Jatco. This ATF is recommended for use in transmissions of vehicles manufactured before 2006. This substance is usually used by owners of Nissan Serena, Primera, Cube, March, etc.
If your car has Hyper CVT and was produced after 2006 inclusive, give preference to the NS-2 CVT. The material is ideal for Nissan Qashqai, X-Trail, Teana, Murano, Cube, Note and Tiida.

The latest modifications of the CVT 7 and CVT 8 already work with a new fluid - CVT NS-3. Suitable for all cars of the concern produced between 2012 and 2013 - Pathfinder, Teana, Altima.
Toyota CVT oil
On Toyota cars there is an Aisin variator. The performance of this box will be ensured by Toyota CVT Fluid TC and Toyota CVT Fluid FE . These are two products developed by the same company based in Tokyo. The difference between them lies in the characteristics and additives. It is recommended to use Toyota CVT Fluid TC on Aisin CVTs manufactured before April 2012. In turn, CVT Fluid FE is an ATF fluid intended for CVTs released after April 2012.
Fits the following models:
- Toyota Rav-4;
- Toyota Avensis;
- Alphard hybrid;
- Estima hybrid.
- Toyota Verso
The manufacturer allows the use of these oils in Lexus and Daihatsu CVT gearboxes.
Oil for CVT Audi
The original ATF fluid from the Audi concern is labeled ATF G 052 180 A2 and can be used on many Skoda, Seat and Volkswagen cars.
Frequency of replacing transmission fluid in the variator
There is a lot of controversy regarding the regulations for replacing the lubricant in the Teana-2 variator; a variety of data are provided.
The automaker itself claims that during the entire operation of the gearbox, only diagnostics are performed for oil leaks and the lubricant level in the transmission is checked.
The oil filled in from the factory should be enough for the entire service life of the continuously variable transmission, approximately 210 thousand km.
At the same time, the Teana J32 is equipped with an ECU system that records the level of deterioration in the performance characteristics of the transmission fluid (hereinafter referred to as TJ), but counts not in kilometers, but in points.
The accumulation of a large number of such conventional units means that the oil has lost its working properties and must be replaced.
In everyday life, the ECU is often called a sensor or an aging counter, but this is not entirely accurate, since there are no specific controllers on the gearbox.
Here, a diagnostic analysis is performed by an electronic system, and the points accumulate faster:
- in hot weather;
- in city traffic jams;
- due to sudden accelerations;
- under increased loads (for example, the car often travels with a trailer) or in mountainous areas;
- at high speeds;
- when slipping.
The higher the operating temperature of the transmission, the faster the conventional units are accumulated, and when replacing the TJ, the counter must be reset; this procedure is carried out at service stations using special scanners (Consult-III, etc.).
But in practice, many car owners change the gearbox oil “the old fashioned way,” and some don’t even know about the existence of the ECU.
Russian dealers recommend replacing the automatic transmission of Nissan cars at least every 90,000 km, and when operating the car in difficult conditions (with increased load, at high speeds) - 60,000 km.
In reality, many drivers change the oil in the variator more often - every 30-40 thousand kilometers, some adhere to the 20 thousand km rule.
How often should you change your oil?
Changing the oil in Nissan CVTs is usually performed during routine vehicle maintenance. It follows from the maintenance regulations that the fluid in the gearbox must be changed every 60 thousand kilometers. However, we recommend replacing it more often - after 25-30 thousand km.
It is almost impossible to independently determine the level and quality of the transmission fluid, since the CVT transmission does not have a corresponding dipstick. Therefore, the most reliable way is to count the mileage. As soon as the mileage traveled reaches 30 thousand km, it is worth going to the store and buying oil for the Nissan variator.
Fuel consumption, oil change
Fuel consumption depends on several factors:
- season of car use;
- operating mode;
- year of manufacture of the vehicle.
It should be noted: according to the documents, the variator consumes fuel significantly less than in reality. But with skillful driving, a manual gearbox can save a lot of fuel. Official data from the manufacturer:
- Nissan Teana 2014, 2011: 5 l 167 hp – 9.4 l;
- 5 l 182 hp – 9.5 l;
- 5 l 249 hp – 10.2;
- 5 l 167 hp – 9.4;
The 2012 Nissan Teana, second generation, shows relatively low fuel consumption. Engine volume is 3.5 liters, consumption is 10 liters. It should be noted: a significantly increased fuel consumption is the first sign of a CVT malfunction. Diagnostics should be carried out at an authorized service center once every 10,000 km. This will avoid unexpected breakdowns and reduce repair costs.
To change the oil, use CVT fluid specifically designed for the variator. The filling volume is just under 12 liters. To change the oil you will need to prepare:
- oil pan gasket;
- sealing ring;
- automatic transmission oil cooler filter;
- washer for the drain plug.
The CVT oil change algorithm includes the main steps:
- switch the gearshift lever to position P or D;
- It is necessary to unscrew the drain plug using a 10mm wrench and drain the CVT fluid;
You should check the condition of the drained oil - it should not smell burnt. The presence of metal shavings indicates wear of the bearings and other problems. If you find metal objects, it is advisable to contact a specialized service. Usually it is possible to drain about 5 liters of liquid. Subsequently, you need to add the same amount as was drained.
Next you need to drive 20-30 km. After which you will need:
- Using a socket or a 10mm wrench, unscrew the bolts holding the pan in place;
- when all the bolts are unscrewed, you need to unscrew the pan;
There is a special coarse filter inside the pan. It is necessary to wash it with a special composition to remove dirt and oil clots. Visually it looks like this:
It is imperative to replace the pan gasket. Otherwise, if you install the old one, a leak may occur.
After changing the oil, the car began to shift noticeably smoother. Fuel consumption has decreased. If possible, it is advisable to reset the oil aging counter. A good solution is to use a Consultant III scanner.
When changing the oil, it is recommended to also change the paper filter. But this requires unscrewing 4 bolts. One of them is located in a hard-to-reach place. It is not possible to drill it out without removing the entire box. Such work should be carried out in an equipped service center. It is not possible to replace the paper filter yourself.
Partial and complete replacement
During a partial change, the oil is drained only once, the pan is not removed, and approximately 4-5 liters of fresh transmission fluid are required.
This operation can be performed after complete service of the gearbox after 15-20 thousand km, and it is advisable to carry it out on “tired” CVTs with high mileage (more than 100,000 km).
When completely replacing the fuel fluid, we drain and refill only once, but at the same time, in addition to dismantling the lower crankcase and replacing (cleaning) filters, we remove the valve body, wash and clean it, and put it back.
Then we perform the following steps (this work needs to be done together):
- after installing the pan and filling in fresh oil (1 liter more than was drained), remove the hoses from the heat exchanger, placing the container underneath, start the engine at XX, determining from which liquid will flow from them;
- through such a hose we drain about one liter of liquid into a pre-prepared canister, and give the command to the partner sitting behind the wheel to turn off the internal combustion engine;
- add TJ through the dipstick tube to the level, start the engine again, drain 1 liter, stop the engine, and fill again.
Having driven the oil through the heat exchanger three times, we put the hoses in place, securing them with clamps, add oil, and start the internal combustion engine again.
After warming up the engine, check the level in the transmission with the engine running (idling), the oil on the dipstick should be in the area of the top mark in the shaded area, and the gearshift lever should be in the “P” position all this time.
When is it time to repair a CVT?
The CVT transmission features smooth torque transmission. If you feel discomfort when moving, the part is faulty. You need to contact us if:
- the car slips when starting to move;
- craving disappears or noticeably decreases;
- vibrations appear;
- a knock is heard in the car;
- the car moves jerkily;
- information about the breakdown appeared on the dashboard;
- The rpm values on the tachometer change all the time.
With these signs of breakdowns in the variator, you need to contact a technician as soon as possible. Without professional intervention, more serious problems and costly repairs are possible.
The most common causes of variator breakdowns:
- Destruction of entrance cones. Over time, it causes damage to the entire unit. The cone cannot be repaired; a new one must be installed.
- Torque converter failure. With this breakdown, the car may not move after the engine warms up. The part is being repaired at the service center.
- Bearing wear. Due to friction, noise and hum are heard. Bearings must be replaced one at a time or as a set.
Repair of variator Nissan Teana L33 (JF017E)
This variator became a follower of the JF010E and therefore practically replicates it in terms of hardware. One of the differences is the elimination of using a step motor to move the cones. The variator valve body has become more reliable due to the use of new standardized solenoids. The torque converter, on the contrary, is less durable due to the increased locking range, which leads to wear on its clutch. All recommendations for maintenance and repair of the Nissan Teana L33 JF017E variator are absolutely similar to the previous ones, however, to change the transmission oil, only NS-3 oil should be used. The variator does not have any other problems.
