Synthetic oil with 502 approvals for the Volkswagen Polo Sedan is recommended by the VAG manufacturer. Before changing the oil for the Volkswagen Polo Sedan, distinguish between the oils offered in the auto store primarily by their viscosity. Note that the original Volkswagen Polo Sedan oil is marked as SAE 5W-30/40 and 0w30. You should use its indicators as a starting point when choosing an alternative substitute - however, the risk of changing the oil due to instability in engine operation increases noticeably; in the worst case, the engine faces major overhaul (if you run into a fake).

About choosing engine oil for Volkswagen Polo
Original motor oil is used on the factory assembly line and at official dealers. It is fully adapted to the VW Polo power unit; the manufacturer has reliably protected the product from counterfeiting. The original was created taking into account the climatic conditions of Russia and the quality of fuel at gas stations. The only drawback, according to many car enthusiasts, is the high price. In addition, purchasing the original liquid in the provinces will be quite problematic.
However, the automaker allows the use of motor oils from a number of other brands. Without fear, you can fill engines with lubricants that have recommendations from the German auto giant.
But even if the product has not been certified by VW, this does not mean that the oil cannot be used in Polo cars. Experts believe that there are many high-quality motor oils on the Russian market, both synthetic and semi-synthetic.
Useful information can be obtained from Volkswagen customer service. The VW 502 00 approval was selected specifically for Russia; it provides for a shortened replacement interval QG0/QG2. If the car is operated with a service interval of QG1, then the manufacturer allows the use of lubricant with the designation 504 00 (Longlife). This type of technical fluid is characterized by high cleaning properties, increased resistance to oxidation, and effective resistance to coking of the power unit.
We have selected 9 of the best motor oils for Volkswagen Polo for review. All of them are represented in the Russian trading network. When allocating seats, the editors of the expertology magazine took into account the opinion of the expert community and reviews of domestic motorists.
Choosing oil for the Volkswagen Polo engine
Technologies do not stand still, and modern manufacturers are ready to offer us a wide selection of motor oils, each of which has its own performance characteristics and its own characteristics. When choosing oil for a specific car, you need to take into account the recommendations of the car manufacturer, seasonality and climate in your area. So what kind of oil should you pour into the Polo sedan engine?
- Volkswagen 501.01; 502.00; 503.00 or 504.00.
The oils are certified and comply with the international quality standard of the Association of European Automobile Manufacturers, SAE viscosity class is 5 w 40 or 5 w 30. The original product is supplied to us directly from Germany.
But it is not at all necessary to pour Volkswagen oil. If you want to evaluate how the composition of another manufacturer will perform, or the nearest stores simply do not have the specified oil, you can always choose a suitable analogue. Here are a few simple rules to follow when choosing fluid for your engine.
How to choose the right engine oil for a Volkswagen Polo sedan:
- Do not chase low prices and do not purchase cheap options of unknown production and questionable quality.
- Buy oil only in large stores, where there is no risk of running into a low-quality fake.
- Know and adhere to the manufacturer's recommendations.
- Collect information and reviews on oils from various manufacturers from more experienced colleagues who have the same car.
For the latter, it is not necessary to call all your friends in search of like-minded people - just look for the “POLOVODOV” communities on Internet resources.
What other oil can be poured into the Volkswagen Polo engine?
Among non-originals, experienced car enthusiasts most often recommend Shell Helix Ultra or Mobil 1. These oils have proven themselves well and fully comply with the difficult climatic conditions of our country, which is why many motorists choose them. Also, the 2014-2016 Volkswagen Polo sedan is filled with Liqui moly Synthoil HighTech or VAG SpecialPlus (both with CAE 5w-40).
Everyone decides for themselves what kind of oil to pour into the Volkswagen Polo engine. It is important to remember that the working fluid must be of high quality, have the appropriate characteristics, viscosity and be suitable for the weather conditions in which the car will be operated in the near future.
Since we often answer the question what kind of engine oil for Volkswagen Polo sedan / vw polo sedan
should be filled in by the car owner. We decided to post a screenshot from the factory program of official VW dealers for the selection of spare parts ETKA.
Based on this illustration, the original engine oil that should be poured into the Volkswagen Polo sedan engine has the following characteristics:
Name: Special Plus
Original number: 5-liter packaging 1-liter packaging 60 liter barrel Viscosity: 5w-40 Approval: VW50200/50501
Despite the factory parameters, many Moscow official Volkswagen dealers recommend that VW polo sedan owners fill in a different engine oil:
Name : LongLife 3
Original number: 5 liter pack
G 052195M2
1 liter pack
G 052195M6
60 liter drum
Viscosity: 5w-30 Approval: VW50400/50700 As a cheaper alternative, many dealers offer: Castrol EDGE Professional Longlife 3 5W-30 with approval VW 504 00/507 00
This oil was originally developed for longer drain intervals. But in practice, under Russian conditions, we still recommend changing this oil at a mileage interval of 7,500-10,000 km.
I would like to emphasize that all the oil presented in our store was purchased strictly from the warehouses of official Volkswagen dealers. In this way, we exclude the sale of counterfeit oil, which is often found on the shelves of Russian spare parts stores.
The life of the engine, which is one of the most expensive components on a car, directly depends on the quality and frequency of engine oil changes. The owner needs to know what kind of oil to pour into the engine of a Volkswagen Polo sedan or hatchback and how often it needs to be replaced.

Engine oil viscosity according to SAE for VW Polo
For all-season oil - double number. The first is viscosity at negative temperatures. The second is viscosity at positive temperatures. Low temperature viscosity indicators:
- 0W - used at temperatures up to −35 degrees. WITH
- 5W - used at temperatures up to −30 degrees. WITH
- 10W - used at temperatures up to −25 degrees. WITH
- 15W - used at temperatures up to −20 degrees. WITH
- 20W - used at temperatures up to −15 degrees. WITH
High temperature viscosity indicators:
Much more interesting is the second number in the designation - high-temperature viscosity. It cannot be translated as simply as the first one into a language understandable to the car enthusiast, because it is a composite indicator indicating the minimum and maximum viscosity of the oil at operating temperatures of 100-150 ° C. The higher this number, the higher the viscosity of the engine oil at high temperatures. Whether this is good or bad for your engine is something only the car manufacturer knows.
Volkswagen for VW Polo vehicles recommends using engine oil with the following viscosity:
SAE 5W30 or SAE 5W40
Factory recommendations
You need to fill in the oil of the brand recommended by the manufacturer.
The manufacturer recommends filling Volkswagen engines with fully synthetic Castrol Edge 5W-40 oil made in Germany.
For Volkswagen Polo, you can use products from various manufacturers that fit the article number. Castrol 5W-40 oil is poured from the factory . Its high-quality composition is maintained in 30-degree frost , a serviceable engine will start without any problems. The product is of high quality and provides an oil film under any load .
Let's take a closer look at viscosity and oil manufacturers below.
Practical subtleties
The selection of oil begins with determining the required viscosity, which is prescribed on absolutely all product containers.
Before choosing an oil, you need to understand the nomenclature. The designation on the packaging includes letters and numbers, for example - 5w/40 . The first letter and number is the cold viscosity. They show at what negative temperature the oil will lose its properties:
- -35º – 0w;
- -30º – 5w;
- -25º – 10w;
- -20º – 15w;
- -15º – 20w.
The second number indicates the consistency when heated. The higher the number, the better the viscosity . These designations are suitable for oil marked SAE , it is common and is poured into most cars.
The Volkswagen Polo sedan operating book indicates the recommended oil specification tolerance.
The second important criterion is oil tolerance .
It is designated by an alphanumeric article and is assigned to brands after studying the composition. Using it, you can select a product for a specific model, taking into account the operating characteristics of the motor.

How many liters should I fill?
Below we present a list of the most common engines and the amount of oil they fill:
- Engine 1.2 105 l. With. – 3.8 l.
- Engine 1.2 60 l. With. – 2.8 l.
- Engine 1.2 70 l. With. – 2.8 l.
- Engine 1.4 125 l. With. – 4.0 l.
- Engine 1.4 85 l. With. – 3.2 l.
- Engine 1.6 105 l. With. – 3.8 l.
- Engine 1.6, 110 l. With. – 4.2 l.
- Engine 1.6 85 l. With. – 3.6 l.
- Engine 1.6 90 l. With. – 3.6 l.
A standard oil change provides a volume of 3.8 liters for the 1.6 CFNA (105 hp) or CFNB (85 hp) engine.
Advice: There is no oil consumption in the Polo engine as such, at least up to 150,000 km, and proper maintenance. Exceptions are 1.2 TSI engines, which can consume up to 1 liter per 2,000 km.
Changing the engine oil Polo Sedan 1.6 CFNA (VW Polo Sedan), photo and video instructions
We will show you in detail the process of changing the oil and oil filter on the Polo Sedan 1.6 CFNA (VW Polo Sedan) 5th generation, so that you can then repeat these instructions with your own hands in your garage.
Before starting replacement, warm up the engine to operating temperature. It is most convenient to carry out the work on a lift, overpass or inspection pit. Using an oil filter puller, loosen it by turning it counterclockwise:
Do not unscrew the filter completely at once; there is a valve underneath it that opens when the tightening is loosened; wait about a minute for the oil to drain from the filter into the pan. As a precaution, cover the area around the filter with a rag to prevent oil from getting on the alternator or accessory drive belt, then unscrew and remove the old filter completely. When removing, be careful; sometimes the threaded bushing comes out together with the filter. If this happens, screw it back into place.
Unscrew the oil filler cap. If you have an engine compartment guard, remove it to gain access to the drain plug. Using a socket or open-end wrench size 18 or 19, depending on the manufacturer of the plug, loosen it and prepare a container with a volume of at least 4 liters to drain the used oil:
The container must be resistant to high oil temperatures. Unscrew the plug completely and wait until all the oil has drained out. According to the manufacturer's technical regulations, the drain plug together with the sealing ring is changed at every oil change; the article number for the plug and ring set is N 908 132 02 for ordering in the spare parts catalogue.
Tighten the plug first by hand and then using a torque wrench with a tightening torque of 40 Hm. Clean the surface of the pan in the area of the drain plug from traces of oil; you can do this with a clean rag, but the best option would be a carburetor cleaner in a can.
Take a new filter, original order number 03C 115 561 H, and apply a thin layer of oil to its O-ring. Clean the filter seating surface with a clean rag. Install the new filter in place, if you have a special puller and a torque wrench, tighten it to a torque of 20 Hm.
If not, tighten the filter by hand until it touches the seating surface and the O-ring, and then tighten it another three-quarters of a turn. Using a rag, clean the edges of the oil filler neck, pour 3.6 liters of new oil into the engine, for convenience it is best to use a funnel:
Please note that oil must be added slowly, in small portions, since the oil filler hole is quite small. According to the manufacturer's recommendations for our operating conditions, the engine oil for this engine must have VW 502.00 approval. Replacement frequency is every 15 thousand km. or once a year, whichever comes first. Close the oil filler cap, start the engine and let it run for one minute. The oil pressure warning light on the dashboard should go out within two to three seconds after starting. Make sure there is no oil leakage through the filter seal and drain plug. Stop the engine and wait at least 5 minutes to allow the oil to drain into the sump, then check its level using the dipstick and adjust it to normal if necessary.
What oil is recommended by the factory for constant use?
VOLKSWAGEN Special Plus 5W-40 is an original synthetic recommended by official dealers.
Please note that on the original packaging the benchmark code is printed by a printer, unlike the fake, where it is raised.
When selecting, you need to pay attention to the markings and article numbers recommended by the manufacturer. This oil is indicated in the manual for scheduled replacement and is poured into the engines of cars that come off the production line.
For Volkswagen Polo, oil with the following characteristics is suitable:
- SAE 5W/30 or 5W/40 ;
- VW article number , but for Russia 504.00 .
Tolerance 504.00
Motor oil that meets tolerance 504.00 has higher flushing properties, is less susceptible to oxidation and more effectively prevents the formation of various deposits.
The manufacturer recommends using oil with a 504.00 approval for Russia, and here’s why:
- does not lose its properties longer during long periods of downtime in traffic jams;
- does not oxidize over time and forms less deposits;
- does not clog oil channels and is easily removed when washed.
The interval with this tolerance is up to 15,000 km . This was done to please nature, but to the detriment of engine life (editor's opinion). We have already written in detail about resetting the service interval.
What kind of oil to pour into the Volkswagen Polo engine
Starting in 2020 , the VAG concern has been pouring oil from the British-Dutch oil company Royal Dutch Shell Polo It replaced the equally well-known British company Castrol in place of the official partner of car manufacturers from Wolfsburg.
The most popular among car enthusiasts is the lubricating fluid for the 502.00 and 504.00 ranges. They contain a large number of additives that allow them to preserve the operating properties of the oil for a long time.
The following engine oil tolerances are used for Volkswagen Polo: 504.00, 503.00, 502, 501.01.
The most popular among car enthusiasts is the lubricating fluid for the 502.00 and 504.00 ranges. They contain a large number of additives that allow them to preserve the operating properties of the oil for a long time.
Oil belonging to class 504.00 is ideally suited for operation in Russian conditions. It withstands traffic jams well, does not pollute oil channels, does not oxidize, and can be easily removed when replaced with flushing fluid.
What is the replacement interval?
If you open the car’s operating manual book, you can see several intervals, for example, LongLife for Europe allows oil changes once every 30,000 km, but in our country this interval was reduced to 15,000 km, due to difficult operating conditions. Moreover, most experienced owners carry out maintenance with an oil change in the Volkswagen Polo Sedan engine every 7,500 km, or once a year, and we must admit - this allows such cars to be operated without problems much longer.
Automatic transmission also requires maintenance!
In Russia and other CIS countries, there is a misconception related to the fact that the oil in the automatic transmission does not need to be changed, they say it is filled for the entire period of operation of the car. What is the service life of an automatic transmission? 100,000 kilometers? 200,000 kilometers? Who will answer this question? That's right, no one. Dealers say one thing (“filled for the entire period,” but they don’t specify the duration of what), the neighbor says something else (they say he has a friend who “changed the oil in the box and it closed after that,” of course, if problems have already begun, they are irreversible and oil is not the solution). We would like to draw your attention to the fact that routine maintenance of an automatic transmission extends the life of the transmission by 2 or even 3 times.
Most concerns do not produce automatic transmissions, but install units from global transmission manufacturers, such as ZF, JATCO, AISIN WARNER, GETRAG and others (in the case of the VAG concern, their production is established according to DSG, and classic hydraulic automatic transmissions are installed from Japanese - from the AISIN company). So, the accompanying notes for their units from these companies state that the oil in the automatic and DSG gearboxes requires replacement every 60,000 kilometers (for dry DSG7 - every 120,000 km). There are even rem. kits (filter + gasket) and a specialized oil called ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid). To find out more about what kind of oil to fill in the automatic transmission and DSG of the Volkswagen Polo, as well as service intervals, tolerances and additional information, follow the link.
