Changing the oil in the gearbox on a VAZ-2115 with your own hands

Selecting a motor lubricant and oil filter

For the VAZ 2115 Lada Samara 2, the manufacturer recommends lubricant with API quality: SF, SG, SH, SJ and the following viscosity:

Ambient air temperature, °CSAE Viscosity
from -15 to +4515W-40
from -20 to +3010W-30
from -20 to +3510W-40
from -25 to +205W-30
from -25 to +355W-40

The type of lubricant is chosen independently depending on financial capabilities. The highest quality is synthetic. It has a high degree of engine protection, prevents the appearance of any deposits, and allows you to easily start the car in cold weather. There is only one drawback - high cost.

Semi-synthetics are very popular and have an optimal price-quality ratio. Mineral oils have the lowest cost, but have high viscosity and provide the shortest mileage before replacement. Manufacturers occupying first places in the ranking: Castrol, Shell, Mobil. But you can use cheaper products from domestic manufacturers.

About 3.5 liters of lubricant are poured into the VAZ 2115 engine. To accurately determine how much lubricant is needed, use an oil level sensor (dipstick).

Choosing an oil filter is not difficult. The main requirements for filters are: tightness of the anti-drainage valve and connections of housing parts. The service life of the VAZ 2115 engine directly depends on this. MANN W914/2 and its full analogue BOSCH P3274 have proven themselves very well.

When using them, the oil pressure sensor does not work, and the emergency oil pressure light goes out almost immediately after the factory. Many drivers recommend the original VAZ Lada Salut filter. If the warning light does not go out at idle, you need to check that:

  • there are no knocks or rattles in the engine;
  • the recommended liquid of good quality and in the required volume is used;
  • The oil pressure sensor is in order (check by replacing it with a good one) and the wiring from it does not short to the housing; if the light continues to glow, then the reason is different, the oil pressure sensor has nothing to do with it.

Rice. 196. Location of filler and drain plugs on the gearbox

To check the oil level, remove plug 1 (Fig. 196) with an internal hexagon.
Use your index finger to check the oil level - it should reach the bottom edge of the filler hole. If necessary, add oil using a hand pump. Always use oil recommended by Mercedes-Benz. Before changing the transmission oil, you must drive several kilometers to warm up the oil. Place a suitable container (approximately 2.5 liters) under the gearbox (place the car on stands) and unscrew plug 2 with a hex key (see Fig. 196). To speed up draining, remove the filler plug. Allow the oil to drain completely. It's better to wait a while. Screw in the drain plug and tighten to 50 Nm. Add new oil using a hand pump. If available, you can use an oil syringe for refilling, after thoroughly cleaning it. To fill the gearbox you need about 1.8 liters. If it is difficult to estimate the volume of oil to be filled, fill to the lower edge of the filler hole. Then screw in the plug and tighten to a torque of 50 Nm.

Replacing gearbox fluid VAZ 2115

  1. Using a knife, we cut off the side of the canister or bottle, making a kind of “bath”.
  2. Before starting work, be sure to warm up the gearbox by driving a VAZ 2115 for about 10 km with a warm engine. In this case, the gears will be able to distribute the lubricant throughout the gearbox.
  3. We lift the right side of the car with a jack, lay down a block or stand and lower the car. Under no circumstances should you work under a vehicle that is simply supported by a jack.
  4. In case of a cold floor, we place a plywood sheet under the VAZ 2115.
  5. Wearing gloves and grabbing a canister and a 17mm wrench, we lay down under the car. If there is a crankcase protection, there may be a cut in it under the oil plug. The plug itself is located at the bottom of the left flange of the gearbox.
  6. If there is no cut, the engine protection must be removed. To do this, clean the plug with a brush and wipe the adjacent area with a rag, then use a 17 mm wrench to unscrew the plug, placing a canister underneath into which warm liquid will flow.
  7. After waiting 10-15 minutes for the lubricant to completely come out, we install the plug in place.
  8. Using a knife, cut off the bottom of a one and a half liter plastic bottle.
  9. We dismantle the intake pipe and air filter by removing the terminal from the mass air flow sensor. Then we twist the clamps at the crankcase pipe and throttle body to completely remove the intake assembly.
  10. We take out the oil dipstick in the gearbox, located in the upper part, not far from the passenger compartment.
  11. The neck of the bottle without a bottom is placed against the hole under the cork, as a result of which the bottle acts as a funnel - no more than three liters of oil should be poured into it, after which we check for lubricant leaks from the cork within ten minutes.
  12. If liquid does not drip from the plug, if necessary, replace the engine protection and remove the VAZ 2115 from the stand.
  13. Using the dipstick, we continue to pour oil into the gearbox to the maximum mark - in total, the gearbox should hold 3.2 liters of oil.
  14. In the reverse order described above, we return the filter and inlet pipe to their place.

At first, it is recommended to fill in no more than 2 liters of oil. Then you should check for leaks in the drain plug under the car. To do this, wait about ten minutes, and then continue to pour the lubricant.

The process of changing the oil in a VAZ 2115 gearbox with your own hands

So, before work, it is necessary to clean the metal near the breather and filler neck as much as possible from dirt. Next, the rubber plug on the breather is removed, and the hole itself is cleaned with a clean wire or awl.

The gearbox oil must be changed after long periods of inactivity. It is worth doing this even after purchasing the car, because it is not known what the previous owner poured into the transmission and whether he monitored the lubricant level.

Step-by-step instruction

In order to change the oil in a VAZ 2115 gearbox, we perform the following steps:

  1. Unscrew the transmission oil drain plug

  2. Next, after wiping the drain plug from dirt, screw it back.
  3. First, remove the oil level dipstick from the hole in the gearbox housing.

  4. Then insert the tip of a thin hose into the hole from which you removed the dipstick, insert the other end of this hose into the funnel, and then pour new oil into the box.

  5. The gearbox contains about 3.0-3.5 liters of oil. Do not start changing the oil in the box without warming it up!

Replacement frequency and choice of gearbox lubricant

Depends on the operating conditions of the vehicle. In regions with colder climates, less viscous liquids are used. Oils with high viscosity are better suited for hot climates.

Depending on the season, it is important to consider the properties of the oil used. To better perform its assigned functions, it is recommended to replace mineral oil with semi-synthetic or synthetic oil before the winter period. Synthetics to mineral - before summer.

For long runs, you should focus on the mileage. For a VAZ 2114 car, replacement is carried out at least once every 60,000 km. If the car is rarely used, consider the expiration date of the lubricant. The average is 5 years.

Video - replacement instructions using the example of VAZ 2210, 2111, 2112

The manual supplied with the VAZ 2115 car indicates the period for changing the oil in the gearbox - it is every 60 thousand kilometers. To avoid breakdowns and malfunctions of the gearbox, the owner of a VAZ 2115 must follow the following recommendations:

  • change the gearbox oil in a timely manner;
  • use only high-quality and recommended gear oil;
  • monitor the oil level in the gearbox while operating the vehicle.

The amount of oil that needs to be poured into the gearbox is also indicated in the same manual. According to the instructions, you need to fill 3.3 liters.

Having chosen the brand of lubricant poured into the box, you should also decide on its packaging. Gear oil is most often sold bottled in cans, the volume of which is 1, 3 or 5 liters. In recent years, proposals to sell bottled oil from barrels have become increasingly common. In this way, you can profitably purchase only the actually required amount of lubricant, but you should carefully check the quality of the product offered, otherwise the imaginary savings can result in serious costs for repairing the gearbox.

The procedure for performing work on changing the oil on a VAZ-2115

One of the stages of draining oil from the gearbox

You probably know that you should perform oil change work on a warm car, because warm liquid is the most liquid and in this state it will flow out more easily from all grooves and hard-to-reach places. When all the liquid has been drained, screw in the oil filler plug and start filling.

The only thing you need to pay attention to is the presence of metal particles in the used oil, because their presence may indicate wear of the internal parts of the gearbox, and, consequently, a comprehensive oil change with preliminary cleaning.

Oil drain

The replacement process itself is quite simple and will not pose any problems even for a novice motorist. Let's consider the sequence of actions aimed at replacing transmission fluid in the gearbox:

  1. We install the car on an overpass or inspection hole.
  2. We wipe the place where the oil level dipstick and drain plug are located.
  3. Unscrew the drain plug and wait until the oil drains out completely.
    Using a wrench, unscrew the transmission drain plug

    Wait until the oil drains completely

  4. We tighten the drain plug. The copper o-ring on the bolt needs to be replaced.

Checking the level and adding oil in the VAZ 2115 box

The oil level in the gearbox housing should not significantly exceed the “MAX” mark, otherwise leaks through the gaskets and seals, as well as increased oil consumption, are possible.

It is recommended to add oil to the gearbox slightly above (5 mm) the “MAX” mark on the dipstick to improve the operating conditions of the fifth gear gear bearing, but not more than this amount.

  1. Remove the oil level indicator (dipstick) from the gearbox.
  2. Wipe the gearbox oil level indicator (dipstick) with a rag.
  3. Insert the gearbox oil level indicator into place until it stops and remove the dipstick again. The oil level, determined by the oil film, should be between the “MIN” and “MAX” marks on the indicator (lower and upper protrusions).
  4. If the gearbox does not have an oil level indicator, the oil level should reach the lower edge of the oil filler hole. To check the level, you need to unscrew the oil filler plug from the gearbox housing from the bottom of the car.

Changing the gearbox oil

Changing the lubricant in the gearbox is done using a syringe

The transmission maintenance regulations in the VAZ 2115 operating manual require changing the lubricant in the gearbox after 90,000 km or after 5 years of operation of the vehicle. The transmission oil recommended by the manual for VAZ is REXOL T 80W-85 (API GL-4), VOLNEZ TM 5-12.

But there are now many products from different companies on the market, and it depends on the car owner what kind of oil to pour into the box. It is only important that its quality corresponds to GL-4. Change as follows:

  • heat the oil after driving 10 km;
  • they drive into a pit;
  • crawl under the car, place a container with a volume of at least 4 liters under the drain hole and unscrew the plug with a 17 key;
  • wrap the cork;
  • remove the oil level indicator;
  • through the hole for the pointer, using a funnel with a hose attached to it, pour new oil.

The oil volume in the gearbox is about 3.2 liters. To accurately determine how much lubricant is needed, use a level indicator.

As you can already understand, any driver can easily change the oil in a short time, while saving on visiting a service station.

Oil change period

The frequency of oil changes in the gearbox of a VAZ-2115 car is 50-60 thousand km. More precise regulations can be determined by the condition of the fluid, or you can also pay attention to “oddities” in the behavior of the gearbox. So, we are talking about jerking and twitching that occurs due to dry friction between parts in the transmission. The fact is that spoiled fluid cannot effectively lubricate and cool parts, resulting in overheating, foam, wear products and metal shavings. Thus, used oil does more harm to the box than good. In this case, corrosion and oxidation processes, as well as various technical problems, cannot be avoided.

What oil is better to fill?

When choosing a lubricant for the gearbox of a VAZ 2115 car, you need to take into account the following factors:

  • climatic conditions of vehicle operation, seasonal air temperature plays a particularly important role;
  • transmission design features: automatic or manual gearbox, the magnitude of mechanical forces in the units, specific loads placed on the units, especially when the engine is running at maximum speed;
  • transmission oil viscosity corresponding to the first two points;
  • the use of chemically active additives that can affect the operation of various transmission units and components.

After analyzing these criteria and familiarizing yourself with the range of available retail outlets, you can choose the optimal oil for your car. For cars such as the VAZ 2115, it is necessary to use GL 4 lubricant, classified in Russia as TM 4. The manufacturer recommends using Lukoil TM 4-12 SAE 80W85 fluid. It is excellent in its performance characteristics, but is not an off-season lubricant. Accordingly, in particularly severe frosts this lubricant thickens, causing certain problems in the operation of the gearbox.

Gearbox oil Lukoil TM 4

In 1998, a set of requirements for fuels and lubricants was in force, which shows the temperature range for normal operation of transmission fluids. In the case of 80W85 lubricant, temperatures from –26 to +40° are considered normal. In this regard, in our country it is recommended to pour out-of-season transmission oils SAE 75W80 or 75W90, designed for use at air temperatures from –35 to +40°. In turn, high-viscosity fluids 85W90 and motor lubricants 5W50 and 10W50 are not permissible for use as transmissions for the VAZ 2115. Transmission gears with such oils will not be sufficiently lubricated even in hot weather, and in cold weather they will simply function at break.

What kind of oil should be poured into the VAZ 2115 manual transmission

Original

The manual transmission of the VAZ-2115 requires mineral oil with specifications SAE 75W-90 API GL-4 or 80W-90 API GL-4. Mostly in winter you can use oil with a viscosity of SAE 70W, 75W, 80W or 85W, and in summer SAE 90, 140 or 250 is recommended. For year-round use, it is better to choose an all-season oil with a viscosity of SAE 75W-80, 80W-85, 85W-90, 75W- 90 or 80W-90.

Unoriginal

Any gear oil with 75W-90 characteristics is suitable for the VAZ-2115 gearbox. For cars of recent years of production, you can choose semi-synthetic oil, and for older models - mineral oil. It has a thicker consistency, which means there is less chance of leaks in the presence of microcracks or gaps between contact pairs. Among other parameters, it is important to pay attention to oil with API-GL-4 approval, which provides a sufficient amount of useful additives for a manual transmission. For example, suitable oils include Valvoline Durablend 75W-90, Lada Trans KP 80W85, Lukoil TM-412 80W-85, BP Energear HT 75W-90.

Prerequisites for changing the oil

  • The mileage since the previous oil change is approaching 60,000 km. Using a lubricant for a longer period of time will result in loss of lubricating properties. The wear of gearbox elements increases.
  • the appearance of extraneous noise in the gearbox. Difficulty when shifting gears. A grinding noise when shifting gears, a constant humming noise that occurs at certain speeds.
  • the presence of a large accumulation of metal shavings or black color of the oil. Determined by visual inspection of the oil dipstick when checking the lubricant level.
  • burning smell. With heavy loads on the transmission. Using low gears at high engine speeds.
  • change of season.

What will be needed when replacing

  1. New transmission lube.
  2. Flushing fluid for cleaning the gearbox.
  3. Key or socket 17.
  4. Drain container.
  5. Syringe or funnel for filling.
  6. Clean rags.

Is it worth washing the box of a VAZ 2114

During operation, metal shavings are formed as a result of friction of gearbox elements. The large one settles at the bottom, the part that is attracted by the magnet on the drain plug. The fine particles spread throughout the box, settling on its elements. When draining, some of the oil and chips remain on the crankcase walls and gearbox gears.

Advice.

The use of flushing liquids allows you to drain the maximum amount of waste and clean out settled chips. It is especially recommended to flush the gearbox when changing the oil.

Mixing lubricants of different viscosities affects homogeneity and reduces lubricating properties. Without flushing, only most of the old oil can be drained.

Oil in the VAZ 2114 gearbox: checking the level with a dipstick, topping up, timing of oil changes

A manual transmission is a multi-stage helical gearbox with manual gear shifting. It can be from 4 to 7 steps. In cars of the Volzhsky plant, and in particular in the VAZ 2114 model, there are 5 stages. To put it simply, a gearbox is a combination of gears and shafts in close contact with each other, rotating at high speed. When working dry, such blocks will, on the one hand, overheat, and on the other, quickly wear out and wear out. And to prevent this from happening, it is necessary that all moving and contacting components of the box are continuously lubricated with special gear oil, which performs a dual task:

  • on the one hand, it reduces friction between gears and gearbox shafts
  • on the other hand, it provides cooling of parts.

That is why it is extremely important to ensure that the oil level in the VAZ 2114 gearbox, as well as other VAZ models, does not fall below the minimum point.

Oil filler neck and dipstick in gearbox

From this article you will learn how to check the oil in the gearbox of a VAZ 2114

HOW TO CORRECTLY CHECK THE OIL LEVEL IN THE MANUAL TRANSMISSION OF CARS OF THE "SAMARA" FAMILY

Checking the oil in VAZ 2113, 2114 and VAZ 2115 cars is almost identical. To see where the oil level dipstick is located in the VAZ 2114 gearbox and other models, you need to remove the engine air filter. You will notice it as soon as you open the hood. The filter occupies the front part of the hood at the top. The dipstick is located below the thermostat; you can recognize it by the ring on the plug, which you need to carefully pull. A rod called a probe is attached to the plug. The smeared dipstick should be wiped with a rag. There are two level marks at the bottom of the rod indicating the minimum and maximum level. Insert the dry wiped dipstick into its place and remove it again. By the end of the rod stained with oil, you will understand what the oil level is in the gearbox. Ideally, if it is in the middle between the marks. It's normal if the level is maximum. But if it reaches the min mark, or, even worse, below it, then the oil must be added. In the same way, you can check the oil in the box of a VAZ 2115.

VAZ models produced before 2003 do not have a dipstick. This is not very convenient, but, nevertheless, the level of lubricant in the gearbox must be checked. To do this, you need to crawl under the car and remove, if any, the crankcase protection, which blocks access to the gearbox filler plug. Unscrew it and plunge your finger into the container. If you cannot reach the oil with your finger, this means that you need to add it so that the oil covers the nail. Screw the plug back into place and install the protection.

HOW TO ADD OIL TO THE TRANSMISSION

Any self-respecting car enthusiast should know how to care for his vehicle, and in particular, how to add oil to the gearbox. Let's consider the moment when its level is at or below the minimum level. The hole from which the dipstick was unscrewed is the inlet for the lubricating fluid.

To regularly add oil to the gearbox, you need a special tool that you can make yourself. To do this, you will need a large funnel with a capacity of 500-750 grams with a spout and a hose up to half a meter long. The diameter of the hose should fit easily but tightly onto the spout of the funnel, and also fit freely into the inlet of the PP box. Fix the hose on the spout so that it does not jump off.

This tool is built to last and should be kept in the trunk of your car along with your other tools.

  • Take a funnel with a hose,
  • insert its lower end into the hole in the box,
  • Start pouring oil from the bottle, periodically checking the level with a dipstick.
  • As soon as you reach the optimal level, take a break, give the liquid time to spread throughout the box, filling the empty spaces between the parts.
  • After about five minutes, check the level again with the dipstick. If it drops to the bottom line, add a little more.

What oil to add is up to you to decide, based on what the market offers. But it is recommended to add lubricant of the same brand (or close to it) that is already used in your car. When replacing it completely, you should take into account the recommendations of the manufacturer, which prescribes in the instructions which gear oils should be used. So, for cars such as the VAZ 2115, the GL 4 brand should be used, which is classified in Russia as TM 4. The manufacturer recommends using Lukoil TM 4-12 SAE 80W85.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU NEED TO CHANGE THE OIL

All novice VAZ Samara car owners need to know how often they need to check the oil level in their car, as well as how often it needs to be changed. Moreover, these terms depend on

  1. Quality of the petroleum product used.
  2. mileage;
  3. Driving manners,
  4. The age of the car and, accordingly, the age of the engine;
  5. Climatic conditions. Temperature changes also affect the quality and efficiency of the oil.

Under optimal operating conditions, the transmission fluid is replaced after 60-80 thousand. km run. If the car is operated in critical and even extreme conditions (dirt roads, traffic jams, frequent transportation of goods, for example to the country, hot or, on the contrary, frosty climate), then the transmission lubricant should be changed much more often - after 25-30 thousand kilometers.

It is important to know that abrupt gear changes are unacceptable for operating the gearbox. The engine does not have time to slow down, and therefore the switching occurs with a blow. Such aggressive use leads to rapid wear and even chipping of gear teeth, and, accordingly, failure of the gearbox.

When checking the oil level, also pay attention to its color and consistency. If it has a thickened structure, has become cloudy, or has acquired a bluish-black color, foreign black inclusions have appeared in it, or a burnt smell, all this means that it is time to change it. Moreover, all these signs indicate that the gearbox itself also needs repair. With normal functioning of the gearbox, the petroleum product retains its properties and structure for a long time.
