Conclusions. a spoon of tar
Having driven the Lada Grant Cross during a test drive, I confidently identified both the most obvious advantages of this car and the obvious disadvantages. Let's start with the bad, or, diplomatically speaking, controversial from my point of view.
1. The configuration with a hydromechanical automatic transmission, which the “regular Granta” has, will not be available here. The reason is banal - money again. According to AvtoVAZ marketers, the use of the 4-speed Jatco, which is familiar to other models and modifications, will lead to an increase in the price of the car by about 65,000 rubles, which is now considered unacceptable.
New Lada: Lada Granta or Datsun, which is better?
“Robot” raises the price by only 25,000 rubles, and in the price group in which the Lada Granta Cross will be sold, this difference turns out to be very significant. In addition, as VAZ technicians have already explained, with the automatic transmission available at the plant, the ground clearance will decrease so much that the “Cross” prefix will become inappropriate. It's a pity…
2. Wheels with dimensions 195/55 R15 are not the most practical choice from the point of view of a poor car enthusiast from the regions. Apparently, the plant, in addition to the ritual sacrifice to the current fashion for large, low-profile wheels, also sought to improve the directional stability of the “grown up” car in this way. But in this choice you can find more disadvantages than advantages.
Judge for yourself: low-profile tires convey road surface unevenness to the suspension in more detail, while they are often easier to damage due to potholes and curbs. Excessive wheel width and weight also means extra gas consumption. In addition, for all these dubious delights you will have to pay significantly more than for some ordinary 175/70 R14.
3. I am a simple person and can easily do without rain and light sensors. Moreover, my driving needs are so basic that I don’t really need climate control, or even, dare I say it, electric windows! For trouble-free driving, a regular engine temperature indicator, rather than one hidden deep inside the on-board computer, would be much more useful than all sorts of electric toys.
It’s also a pity that the Grant Cross is deprived of a stabilization system available for simple Grant station wagons. This decision of the AvtoVAZ marketing team, as well as the absence of a possible electronic imitation of differential locking even in the future, seems doubtful to me. Of course, in many ways I am a mossy dinosaur who does not keep up with fashion trends, but I would trade all the other electrical services of the Lada Granta Cross for these two systems, especially since we are talking about a car that is inherently designed for more difficult road conditions.
4. I want to grumble about the felt fender liners. Of course, they dampen road noise effectively, but how long will they last? And does the car even need such a “decoration” that will be generously doused with wet mud in the spring and autumn, and also with caustic reagents in the winter? I first noticed felt fender liners 10–12 years ago on a Mazda 3, when two clients immediately asked to remove them after the second or third winter.
I'm afraid that VAZ's fender liners will not be any more durable than Mazda's, although the factory workers claim that they do not absorb moisture. But ordinary plastic ones, with a “noise” on the back side, would be much more practical in our conditions. Of course, if they are fastened through plastic inserts in the body, as in the entire civilized automobile industry, and not with self-tapping screws into bare metal, as with our VAZ dealers.
The rest, which Ladas are often criticized for, I don’t consider as minuses. These are, rather, design features of one of the cheapest cars on the Russian new car market. If you don’t like the engine-box-interior-suspension as a whole, well, add another half price, and then the choice will expand at least a little.
