Technical characteristics of Lada Kalina Cross Station Wagon » Lada.Online - all the most interesting and useful about LADA cars

Appearance

Unlike the interior, the exterior of the Lada Kalina Cross has significantly transformed the base model and received a number of advantages.
Many plastic elements have been added around the perimeter of the body, but in addition to this, metal parts have also undergone changes. The hood became smoother, the mirrors and door handles became black, the radiator grille began to look more elegant, the shape of the air intake around the license plate was somewhat modified, and powerful plastic inserts were added to the lower parts of the car (sills, wheel arches, “aprons”). In addition, wider black moldings were installed on the doors. All this suggests that the Lada Kalina Cross is prepared for permanent impacts from branches and bushes on the car body in light off-road conditions.
Thanks to its exterior, high seating position and good visibility, any salesperson at a car dealership can safely tell you that the Lada Kalina Cross is almost a crossover.

Design

The word “Cross”, which appears in Kalina’s name, quite confidently tells us that this is not just some ordinary sedan, but a very crossover. The developers have actively worked on the appearance of the new product. We started by increasing the already decent ground clearance. Now they promise 183 mm. The bumper now has additional protection against damage that may occur when hitting large obstacles.

Along with the increase in ground clearance, the width of the wheelbase has also increased. This also led to an increase in the width of the car itself. Although the dimensions of the car have not changed much, it has acquired a more impressive and aggressive appearance. Design solutions bypassed the headlights and radiator grille. The car acquired brutality due to sharp transitions from one element to another, instead of the previous “roundness”. The impression is also enhanced by plastic moldings on the sides, wheel arches and bumpers.

Colors

Taking into account the variety of tastes and preferences of the car, the new product “gave” as many as 16 colors. Moreover, all of them are available in metallic options.

  • Kalina. Traditional bright red;
  • Magma. Already native orange;
  • Port wine. Dark color of juicy cherry tones;
  • Glacial. Simply put, white;
  • White cloud. The lightest shade of white;
  • Alligator. Rich olive green;
  • Colombian greens. Golden olive;
  • Ice. Almost white with a barely noticeable blue tint;
  • Perseus. Rich dark blue;
  • Odysseus. Juicy and rich gray-blue;
  • Riesling. Light silver gray;
  • Space. So dark blue that it appears almost black;
  • Black Panther. Traditional black;
  • Granta. Quite dark grey-blue;
  • Platinum. Another variety of white;
  • Coriander. Calm beige with golden tones.

Interior design Lada Kalina Cross

The domestic automobile giant, as always, decided not to make significant design changes to the interior design of the new Lada Kalina Cross. The appearance of the interior remains the same, with the exception of a few design decisions - the seats, doors, dashboard and steering wheel no longer look so gray due to the fact that orange inserts have been added to them. Well, in general, thanks for that - the interior of the Lada Kalina Cross began to radiate positivity and at least somehow differ from the base model.

Otherwise, the interior design has not changed and remains the same - hard plastic is covered with the same gray and dull tones. But, given that the cost of the Lada Kalina Cross does not exceed the budget category of cars, you can be content with these relatively minor changes.

In 2014, mass production of the Lada Kalina Cross all-terrain station wagon

. On August 18, AVTOVAZ announced the release of the first 36 units of this Kalina model. They were intended for the first presentation and demonstration at the Moscow Motor Show, as well as various tests. And already in the fall, a large-scale test drive was carried out in Kazakhstan in various modes, which showed excellent results. The car was good both in the steppe and on uneven asphalt. Safety tests have revealed that the crossover meets all European requirements.

The car has almost passed certification, and AVTOVAZ announced a preliminary start of sales in September. But in fact, this model entered the car market only in winter. A new car showroom was opened in Lipetsk on December 5th. There, Oleg Grunenkov, director of the Kalina project, spoke about plans to produce a station wagon. At that time, 15 cars came out of the car plant’s assembly line every day, but there were plans to further increase production. Everything indicated that the model Kalina Cross should be popular in Russia.

After some time, a version appears with a more powerful 1.6-liter engine with 106 horsepower. Further, at the end of 2015, AVTOVAZ modified this model and released a version with gearbox control from an on-board computer that controlled the speed of the car. Currently, LADA Kalina Cross is at the peak of its popularity, and the price of the car at the beginning of 2021 starts from 524 thousand rubles for the “norm” package. The most expensive version of Kalina Cross “luxury” costs 593 thousand 600 rubles.

Dynamic characteristics of Lada Kalina Cross

The difference between the new product and the hatchback was the engine with the index 21127 and a robotic gearbox, installed instead of the previous 21126. In this configuration, instead of the 4AT gearbox, they began to use the 5AMT gearbox. The other two engine options remained the same - the 106-horsepower 16-valve 21127 and the good old 8-valve 11186, developing 87 hp. Both of the latter options are equipped with manual transmissions.

In the minimum configuration, 87 “horses” accelerate the car to 100 km/h in 12.2 seconds. A 106-horsepower engine with a manual transmission allows you to do this in 10.8 seconds. The same power unit with a robotic gearbox is somewhat behind other configurations and accelerates the car to 100 km/h in 13.1 seconds. The maximum speed ranges from 165 to 178 km/h, which is quite enough for a car with a similar body and high ground clearance.

ASPHALT

Already on the highway, the Cross can pleasantly surprise those who have driven front-wheel drive Ladas. The source of joy is the pendant! Dense, energy-intensive, but not shaking. And most importantly, there is no traditional rattling noise when driving over small irregularities and other characteristic sounds of a front-wheel drive VAZ chassis. Gas-filled struts with upgraded rebound buffers, reduced internal friction and original valve settings do their job.

The upholstery doesn't bother you with squeaking either. Of course, the noise hasn’t gone away completely: the winter tires itch, the engine grumbles, the gearbox whines. The transmission noise is not very annoying, but now stands out clearly against the general quiet background.

The regular station wagon is the complete opposite. Transmission noise is minimal, largely thanks to the Jatco automatic transmission. But the suspension is talkative, like in the good old days of all front-wheel drive VAZs. It is also quite dense, but still softer than Cross. On uneven surfaces, a slight sway of the body from bow to stern is noticeable, which we did not notice in the Cross. And the interior was upset by an inexplicable clattering sound in the rear door area, although the car is brand new. Inconsistent build quality?

We imitated typical roads of the Russian outback at the Dmitrovsky driving range - there was plenty of compacted snow and bare ice there. The eight-valve Kalina Cross in the “Norma” configuration and with a manual gearbox is addressed to those who do not need electronic assistants. The only such benefit is the anti-lock braking system.

I liked the performance of ABS on icy surfaces both in general and in particular. Imagine a long descent. One of the most unpleasant situations for a front-wheel drive car in these conditions is locked drive (also steered) wheels and a stalled engine (the gear is on!). On a Cross with ABS, you don’t need to delicately dose the force on the brake pedal: press it and that’s it, the car won’t turn into an uncontrollable projectile. Otherwise, “Cross” provides freedom in the entire speed range. Those who know how can also ride in slides; fortunately, the Cross handles well.

The engine, which is not the most structurally advanced in modern times, allows you to drive under pressure without slipping. Let's say, on a slippery six percent climb, you can start the car, immediately tuck into second gear and crawl up almost at idle speed. The main thing is not to press on the gas, so as not to cause the wheels to slip.

But just Kalina with a 16-valve engine and an automatic transmission has in this case an electronic stabilization system combined with traction control - this is the prerogative of cars in the maximum “Lux” configuration (on more modestly equipped versions there is only ABS). No delicate throttling is required here. Switch to Drive and step on the gas pedal. The electronics will do everything itself, and the car will crawl up the hill without slipping. But it won’t allow you to frolic in sliding at high speeds. You can turn off ESP, but at a speed of 50 km/h it will automatically turn on again. Therefore, during intense acceleration with ESP turned off, do not forget that the electronics waking up at 50 km/h can sharply cut off traction on the wheels.

Country paths and virgin snow, as expected, put “Cross” in the lead. It is taller and better protected from below. In these conditions, a manual gearbox, a 3.9 main pair and an engine with acceptable traction at low speeds are what you need. You can move through loose snow with even throttle, almost under pressure. Where there is more snow, you accelerate a little and scratch further with a slight slip - the Cross confidently crawls forward.

Stuck? It’s not difficult to jump back using the old-fashioned method of swinging. Small twigs, branches, and hard crust are not a problem: the black plastic body kit protects the sills and bumpers well from scratches. The tight suspension instills confidence that the car will not nosedive or hit an obstacle at the most inopportune moment.

Kalina cross configuration

Kalina in the Cross modification is presented in two main trim levels - Norma and Luxe, the first of which is basic.

The most budget option includes the following options:

The Norma version is equipped with: anti-lock brakes ABS, brake distributor EBD, driver assistance system for emergency braking EBA.

The front seats and side mirrors are heated, and an athermal film is installed on the windows to protect against glare.

Surely many drivers are upset that the steering column cannot be adjusted for reach, and in the trunk, instead of a full-size spare wheel, there is a small R14 spare tire.

The Luxury package adds a few functions: rain/light/parking sensors, a heated windshield, and all side doors are equipped with electric windows.

Modifications

There are only two trim levels of the Lada Kalina Cross car - standard and luxury, which in turn are also divided depending on the installed engine and gearbox, resulting in as many as 14 trim levels, the cheapest ones are equipped with an 8-valve engine with a capacity of 87 horsepower, which works exclusively with manual transmission. Let's take a closer look at the configuration of Kalina Cross.

21941-51-C10 and 21941-51-C11

The “norm” package includes an 8-valve 1.6-liter engine with an output of 87 horsepower, a 5-speed manual transmission. Both configurations are completely identical except for the interior - orange or gray; in addition, the package includes:

  • Driver airbag;

Not a bad package for the cheapest “norm”, price - 524 thousand 100 rubles.

21947-51-C10 and 21947-51-C11

The standard equipment is exactly the same as the previous models, but is additionally equipped with a front passenger airbag. The engine is already 16-valve with a capacity of 106 horsepower, and the gearbox is 5-speed manual. The cost is slightly more expensive - 541 thousand rubles.

Black line 21947-51-C13 and 21947-51-C12

The latest configuration is “norm” with a 106-horsepower engine and manual transmission. Unlike previous models, the roof of the cars is painted black, there are vinyl stickers on the floor sills, in addition, cars of the Black line line are equipped with original 15-inch wheels. The price for a dubious advantage is 9 thousand rubles more expensive (550 thousand rubles).

21947-52-C10 and 21947-52-C11

And this is a luxury package with a 16-valve engine producing 106 horsepower and a manual transmission. In addition to what is already included in the “norm”, the package includes:

  • 3 rear seat headrests;
  • Fog lights;
  • Headlight switch-off delay function;
  • Electric drive of external mirrors;

The price of this modification is 568 thousand rubles.

21947-51-C50 and 21947-51-C52

The “norm” package with a 106-horsepower engine and a robotic 5-speed gearbox is equipped with fog lights. In all other respects they are similar to modifications 21947-51-C10 and 21947-51-C11. Price 569 thousand rubles.

Black line 21947-51-C54 and 21947-51-C53

Exactly the same configurations as the previous Black line series, but with a robotic gearbox. Price 578 thousand rubles.

21947-52-C50 21947-52-C51

Another “luxury” package, but unlike the previous luxury, it features a robotic gearbox. Price 593 thousand rubles.

Lada Kalina cross technical specifications

Under the hood of a VAZ car, one of two types of engines can be installed, these are:

  • 8-valve injection internal combustion engine 87 l. With.;
  • 16 valve engine (also injector) 106 hp. With.

All power units are four-cylinder, in-line, running on gasoline fuel, with a cylinder capacity of 1596 cm3.

The type of recommended fuel is AI-95 gasoline; the engines comply with Euro-4 environmental standards.

There are also two types of gearboxes: five-speed manual and robotic gearbox-5.

In the standard version with an 8-valve transmission and a 5-speed manual transmission, the car can be accelerated to 165 km/h and hit a hundred in 12.2 seconds.

The manufacturer states that in the combined cycle, gasoline consumption per 100 km is 7.2 liters.

With an AMT transmission and a 106-horsepower engine, the car consumes fuel more economically (7 liters), but acceleration is not fast; it will take 13.1 seconds to reach 100 km/h.

But the maximum speed in this configuration is higher; the Cross 1.6 AMT can travel at a maximum speed of up to 178 km/h.

Compared to the station wagon, the ground clearance of the Lada Cross is increased by 2.3 centimeters and is 208 mm (without load). With a body length of 4.104 m, Kalina’s wheelbase is 2476 mm, and the car’s height is 1.7 m.

The front suspension of the Cross is standard - standard MacPherson strut.

But a beam is installed at the rear, but it is reinforced with triangular arms.

The front brakes are disc (there are no other brakes on modern passenger cars now), but there are drums on the rear axle, which, of course, is not encouraging.

The electric power steering made driving the car easy, and changing the gear ratio in the main gearbox from 3.7 to 3.9 improved traction characteristics, but due to this the dynamics deteriorated slightly.

Dimensional characteristics of Lada Kalina Cross

Since one of the designers' goals was to create a roomy station wagon, the dimensions of the car were changed:

  • The rear of the car was increased by 211 mm, as a result of which the total length of the body reached 4104 mm compared to 3893 mm of its predecessor.
  • The track width of the front wheels of the Lada Kalina Cross remained unchanged (1430 mm), but 4 mm was added to the rear axle (1418 mm)
  • Due to roof rails, a modified chassis, 15-inch wheels and high tires, the height of the car became 1560 mm versus 1500 mm for the Kalina Hatchback
  • A consequence of the changes in the chassis and wheel sizes was also an increase in ground clearance by almost 4 cm - in the end it became 183 mm at full load

New Lada: Kalina will not start: possible causes and their elimination

The downside of increasing the ground clearance of the Lada Kalina Cross was the need to reduce the turning radius by 30 cm along with a reduction in the length of the steering rack.

Specifications

In the description of the technical characteristics of the Lada Kalina cross, it is worth noting that only expensive models will have all-wheel drive. Regarding the engine, only one is available in the basic version: four cylinders, eight valves, 87 hp, working in tandem with a five-speed manual transmission.

Operational technical characteristics of Lada Kalina Cross:

  • Start from a standstill to 100 km/h – 13.2 seconds.
  • Speed indicator – 165 km/h.
  • Fuel consumption in mixed mode – 7.1 litres.

The parameters of the 2021 Lada Kalina Cross include the following data:

  • Length – 4,104 mm.
  • Width – 1,700 mm.
  • Height – 1,560 mm.
  • Weight – 1,125/1,560 kg.
  • Wheelbase – 2,476 mm.
  • Front/rear wheel track – 1,430/1,418 mm.
  • Luggage compartment volume – 335/670 litres.
  • Gas tank capacity – 50 litres.
  • Tires – 195/55 R 15; 195/50 R 15.

The ground clearance of the Lada Kalina cross is 187/208 mm, depending on the modification. The ascent angle is increased to 20.8, and the descent angle is increased to 22 degrees.

General data of the Lada Kalina Cross: front/rear suspension – independent, MacPherson/semi-independent, lever; stabilizers of greater rigidity; front/rear brakes – disc, ventilated/drum.

How does the Lada Kalina cross differ from a station wagon?

The most important question: how does the Cross model differ from a station wagon, and can it be all-wheel drive?

Unfortunately, AvtoVAZ has never mass-produced 4x4 passenger cars, of course, if you do not take into account the Niva SUVs.

Kalina Cross is a front-wheel drive car, but with slightly increased cross-country ability and improved technical characteristics.

So, the modification of the Lada Kalina Cross differs from Universal:

  • the presence of wider door moldings;
  • reinforced anti-roll bars;
  • gear ratio in the main transmission pair;
  • higher ground clearance;
  • improved shock absorbers;
  • other suspension springs.

A protective plastic body kit is installed on the sills and wheel arches of the Cross, and a nameplate with the model name is also attached to the trunk door.

Already in the base, the car is equipped with 15 alloy wheels, while the station wagon is equipped with R14 “stamping” in the basic configuration.

Is the Lada Kalina Cross a second generation car?

The well-known Lada Kalina brand is a passenger car produced by AvtoVAZ, produced since November 2004.

The model is one of the ten most popular cars in Russia; it is produced not only in Togliatti, but also at the automobile plant in Ust-Kamenogorsk (Kazakhstan).

Assembly of the first generation Kalina was carried out until the spring of 2020; the car was produced in hatchback, sedan and station wagon bodies.

In May of the same 2020, a new project Lada Kalina 2 was launched into series, but this model has already begun to be produced in only two body styles - station wagon and hatchback.

The Kalina Cross modification appeared in 2021, and although it is based on the Universal, it has a number of significant differences.

There are ongoing debates whether the new Kalina is a second-generation car; some fans of VAZ cars believe that this is simply a deep restyling of its predecessor.

But the Lada Cross has quite a lot of updates, and what the car represents is something we have to figure out.

Other reviews

Against the background of the constant appearance of new cars on the world market, the Lada Vesta of the 2015 model year is not such a new product. However, it can still be considered the discovery of the Russian car market thanks to its very modern appearance and well-thought-out technical “stuffing”. The sedan's exterior was designed by ex-Mercedes-Benz and Volvo designer Steve Mattin, and was among the first people lucky enough to sit in it.

The raised cross-country hatchback Lada Xray, which AvtoVAZ dubbed a crossover for advertising purposes, is called by many the highest quality model of the domestic manufacturer, and there is indeed reason for this. Firstly, there is an abundance of high quality imported parts, and secondly, this car has decent ground clearance and a proprietary 1.8-liter engine.

Cars nowadays don't work on anything. There are even hydrogen ones that literally “live” on fuel cells. Water is, of course, good and incredibly environmentally friendly, but it is still painfully unpopular and expensive to implement. Is it compressed natural gas or, as it is also called, methane in a cylinder, like the new version of Lada Vesta CNG (Compressed Natural Gas)! A gas sedan is cheaper.

5- and 7-seater Lada Largus station wagons appeared on the Russian market in 2012, becoming a kind of continuation of the cheapest Renault Logan model, only under the auspices of a domestic manufacturer. As you might guess, the Logan-like Largus turned out to be the first Lada car built on the basis of the budget B0 platform, on the basis of which a number of Lada, Renault and Nissan models were designed.

If the image doesn’t bother you, you like the ground clearance, like a jeep, and in addition, you’ll admire the large capacity in the form of a 5/7-seater interior and a huge trunk, and “not expensive” - that’s all, we’ve arrived. Yes, not on anything, but on a raised Lada Largus with a talking Cross prefix and, of course, DNA from Renault Logan. This model, first presented to Russians in 2015, has no competitors.

The domestic auto industry never ceases to amaze. For example: when the Russian press first said that AvtoVAZ was preparing a “sports” version of the second Lada Kalina in a hatchback body, it was more difficult to get a new product for a test drive than another Bentley or Mercedes. Amazing, right? For VAZ people there is nothing special about this: not many significant new products are released after all.

What is a 3- or 5-door Lada 4×4 with the Urban prefix? Some kind of supernova Niva? In relation to an off-road passenger car from the glorious city of Togliatti, these words smack of piercing irony. New, of course - it’s been around for almost 40 years, of which 10 years the model has not been called Niva. But somehow I can’t seem to forget about my “maiden name”... So, what does “urban” promise?
