For many, it may be surprising that the increased displacement of the “nine” engine is not always the most advantageous method of boosting. In some situations (it all depends on what the engine should ultimately be like), it is much easier and more efficient to modify the cylinder head (cylinder head) and then install a suitable camshaft. This type of boost will also make it possible to increase the power performance of the power unit.
Of course, to maximize all the capabilities and reserves of the camshaft, a fairly serious modification of the cylinder head will be required, which may even include repressing the seats and installing valves with a large diameter. For example, engines characterized by the presence of eight valves will be suitable for similar parts from BMW, and sixteen-valve engines will be suitable for components from Opel and Volkswagen. At the same time, one should not lose sight of the intake/exhaust channels intended for circulating the fuel-air mixture - they also require improvement. Their improvement involves increasing the cross-sectional diameter to maximum dimensions through internal polishing.
The technical characteristics of the VAZ 2109 cylinder block, like other components, leave their mark on the overall performance of the engine. You can, of course, study in more detail the influence of the types and shapes of pistons, the weight of crankshafts and much more that is somehow reflected in the operation of the engine, but this article is not about that.
The following characteristics have a particular impact on the performance of the internal combustion engine: the ratio of the length of the connecting rod to the piston stroke and the dimensions of the crankshaft crank (diameter).

The importance of the above parameters is due to the fact that the engine is essentially a pump that pumps a certain amount of mixture through itself over a specific period of time. It is these characteristics that will be discussed further.
The influence of the R/S value on the VAZ 2109 engine
The ratio of connecting rod length to piston stroke is designated as R/S, and its conversion is taken with the utmost seriousness and responsibility. Many sources note that the norm for R/S is 1.75.

Indicators that differ from this value have different effects on the operation of the internal combustion engine:
R/S is above normal. Its undoubted “advantages” include the ability of the piston to remain in the top dead center (TDC) position longer. This ensures excellent combustion of the fuel mixture, namely: complete combustion of the fuel, increased pressure on the piston after TDC and increased temperature in the chamber where the fuel is burned. The result is good torque at high speeds and reduced friction in the piston-cylinder pair due to the long connecting rod, which is important for the piston stroke. At the same time, a motor assembled with an R/S number exceeding the norm, due to a decrease in air flow speed, cannot ensure proper filling of the cylinders when operating at low and medium crankshaft speeds. This is a significant “minus”, but, unfortunately, not the only one. Due to the high temperature of the combustion chamber and the prolonged presence of the piston at TDC, there is a high risk of detonation;
R/S is below normal. The advantages of this position are the excellent filling speed of the cylinders at low and medium crankshaft speeds, due to the fact that the piston moves faster from TDC, as a result of which vacuum occurs quickly. An increase in the speed of movement of the mixture consisting of fuel and air has a positive effect on its quality: it becomes more homogeneous, which makes it burn better. It is much easier to achieve such indicators, since the requirements for such modification are significantly different from engines with high R/S. A low R/S value means that the connecting rod has a large angle of inclination, and accordingly, the force on the piston will be applied in a horizontal plane. As a result, this can lead to rapid wear of the cylinder walls and rings, as well as deterioration of the lubrication process.
When configuring engines, AvtoVAZ gives preference to connecting rods with a length of 121 mm, which ensure optimal performance. In contrast, tuners using a crankshaft with a larger crank radius use longer connecting rods (129.132 mm). True, their cost is significantly higher than standard products.

Carburetor
If the VAZ 2109 with an injection engine has no problems with power, then the same cannot be said about the carburetor version. As you know, the VAZ 2109 car is equipped with a DAAZ 2108 carburetor, assembled at the Dimitrovgrad plant. The manufacturers of these same carburetors certainly don’t grab stars from the sky, and the products that come out of their factories, frankly speaking, are different. The fact is that some carburetors can last more than 7-8 years without problems, while others cannot last even 3 years. In addition, as mentioned above, engine power depends on the carburetor.
If bad gasoline or dirt gets into a regular carburetor, or the driving style of a novice driver does not meet the standards, the carburetor (see Repairing a VAZ 2109 carburetor at home) prevents the engine from functioning normally. In this case, the power drops sharply.

It is worth noting that replacing a standard VAZ 2109 carburetor with an imported one will not make any significant difference in terms of increasing engine power. Only revision will help.
Note. A comparative test of the Italian Weber carburetor, which is suitable for the VAZ 2109 and DAAZ, did not give any difference. In addition, the imported carburetor “gobbled up” more fuel during operation than the domestic one.
On the other hand, some fans installed a standard Niva carburetor and the difference in power was felt. And this is not surprising, because the Nivov carburetor has more calibration data. Tuning the standard carburetor of a VAZ 2109, if done correctly, will give a noticeable increase in the dynamics of the car and significantly increase engine power.
Note. Removing this same spring will help, with a slight increase in fuel consumption, to guarantee an increase in the dynamic characteristics of the car. Simple, cheap, but cheerful.

Methods for tuning the power unit
There are many ways to improve engine performance. Before work, keep in mind that in case of an error you will have to completely change the unit. Each method of changing motor characteristics has its own advantages and disadvantages. Here are a few relatively safe tuning methods:
- Installing a zero resistance filter. Craftsmen often call this component “zero”. If you choose the right filter, the dynamic performance and motor power will increase by 5%. If you equip your car with a zero drive, then you will have to carefully monitor it and clean it in a timely manner. Otherwise, installing the element will be pointless and dangerous. - Together with injection power units, it is often recommended to use direct-flow mufflers. This part should only be used in the gas exhaust system if you have carried out a thorough modernization of the engine. Another option when such a muffler would be appropriate: if the car has a turbo air injection system (additional compressor). The straight-through muffler will only affect power in conjunction with other upgrades. In other cases, installing it is a pointless waste of money. It will make the car noisier and a roar will be heard when driving.
- Another effective way to increase engine power is to install a sports range on the gearbox. At the same time, a 6th gear will be added, and the car will accelerate more dynamically due to a change in a number of gear ratios. The overall engine power will not change, but the dynamic characteristics will become noticeably better. At the same time, replace the piston group and install a more powerful engine. - Chip tuning is most often recommended for injectors. Using a simple laptop, a small amount of equipment and application programs, the ECU is configured. If you make a mistake, it will be enough to replace the on-board computer. It will cost less than replacing an engine if another type of tuning fails. One can serve five to ten years without complaints, while another, for no apparent reason, can suddenly refuse to work. True, the problem is not always a manufacturing defect.
Often such difficulties arise from dirt or bad gasoline. Or from a not very smart driver. There may be incorrect “non-original” jets, which also leads to problems.

Some VAZ owners believe that an imported carburetor can significantly affect the increase in power of the VAZ 2109 engine. But comparative tests of the domestic DAAZ and the Italian Weber showed that there is no huge gap at all. In addition, the Weber consumes more fuel and has higher CO emissions at higher speeds.

Tuning a carburetor engine primarily involves boring the cylinder block. This is done in order to increase the combustion chamber, and, accordingly, the pressure inside it.
Also, lightweight parts are installed, which make it possible to reduce the weight of the motor, which will increase acceleration dynamics.
Tuning process
Do-it-yourself VAZ 2109 engine tuning begins with removing the engine from the car. So, you will have to turn off the power supply, ignition system and other systems. So, let's look at all the stages of modifying the engine yourself. It is impossible to carry out complete tuning with your own hands, since you will still have to contact a car service at some stages.
Removing the motor

Determining Rework Priorities
To increase the power of the VAZ 2109 carburetor engine, you will need to purchase a piston group, valves, camshaft, connecting rods and crankshaft. All these parts must be lightweight and manufactured by tuning manufacturers.
Thus, the piston group, valves and seats are suitable for ATI. It is best to install bronze guide bushings made by the American manufacturer K-line. The crankshaft and camshaft are purchased from the German company TDR.
Working with the cylinder block
To begin with, the cylinder block must be bored for new pistons, respectively, with a size of 82 mm. Then, the crankshaft and new bearings, which come with the main part, are installed.
To make everything work like a clock, you need to install a lightweight tuning clutch manufactured by Sachs. After the clutch is attached to the shaft, balancing must be done. It is advisable to carry out the operation on a special stand.
We assemble the piston assembly, namely, we attach the pistons to the connecting rods. Then, you can begin the so-called “dressing” process. This refers to the attachment of connecting rods with pistons to the crankshaft. We install the crankshaft oil seals and bearings. We install the yoke and you can fix the pallet. Then, the remaining auxiliary components, such as the pulley, water pump and roller, are assembled.
Head tuning
Tuning a cylinder head is actually assembling new parts onto old seats. So, a disassembled cylinder head is assembled from an old body and new tuning elements. There is nothing complicated in this process.
Assembly of the unit
After the main systems and components have been assembled, you can proceed directly to the process of assembling the engine together. So, in reverse order, the cylinder head, valve cover, pulleys, and timing belt are attached to the cylinder block.
After assembly, it is recommended to run the engine cold, but since not everyone has a running stand, most motorists carry out this operation hot, directly on the car.
Refinement of auxiliary systems
After the main components of the power unit have been assembled, you can begin installing auxiliary systems. So, first of all, we install the fuel injection system. An old Solex carburetor should not be installed, since it will not supply the required amount of fuel to the combustion chambers. Therefore, it is necessary to find an improved Solex Mega-2 carburetor or the Czech version - IKOV.
It is worth modifying the ignition system. Instead of standard spark plugs, it is worth installing Brisk spark plugs marked A2. Also, standard high-voltage wires are replaced with a tuning version produced by Tesla.
Do not forget about the cooling system, since an increased number of crankshaft revolutions will speed up all processes, and accordingly increased heat emissions. Therefore, a kit cooling system is installed on the VAZ 2109, which includes: silicone pipes, a sports pump and a two-chamber thermostat. It is also recommended to install a sports radiator made of aluminum. This will lighten the weight of the car by several kilograms.
The final modification is the installation of a “zero” resistance air filter. Installation of this unit is quite simple; it is “aired” onto the standard fastenings of the old case. The air intake is oriented so that there is a direct air supply.
Also, in addition to standard modifications, an air supercharger can be installed on the engine. Of course, such a modification wears out the engine elements faster, so it is recommended to install a “snail”.
After all modifications have been made, the engine is installed on the vehicle, and running-in and adjustments are carried out.
Conclusion
You can tune the VAZ 2109 carburetor engine yourself in the garage. The modification described in the article is carried out in a month and its cost, if you buy new parts, will cost about 4000-5000 dollars.
