Air pistol Umarex Walther PPS Blowback

For the German arms manufacturer Umarex, the production of a pneumatic analogue of the Walter P38 - the most mass-produced weapon of the Great Patriotic War - became a kind of “homework”. This company did an excellent job.

History of the pistol

Like every pistol that later gained popularity, the Walter P38 did not just appear; before that there was a series of weapons that were not very successful in their design. Walther engineers and developers set a goal - to make a pistol that would be simpler and cheaper, unlike the Georg Luger P08 model. Technically, this task was not difficult, since the P08 pistol is complex and expensive to manufacture, but there was one caveat.

This is the performance characteristics of the Luger pistol; not all weapon models of that time could compete with them. However, even this did not become the main problem. The catch was that the military was attached to the P08 and in order to change their minds, it was necessary to create something better.

The result of the experiments was a pistol resembling a large and heavy copy of the Walter PP. Naturally, this weapon could not meet all the requirements and was not allowed into mass production.

Despite all efforts to improve the design to normal indicators in terms of reliability and weight reduction, this did not produce results.

While searching for a working automatic system, characterized by simplicity, Fritz Bartlemens proposed his own design, which later became the basis for the pistol, which today is known as the Walter P.38 model.

The idea was to improve the automatic system with a shortened barrel stroke, which was proposed by Browning. Based on this, they developed a pistol, which they proposed to adopt.

Air pistol Umarex Walther PPS Blowback

In 2014, Umarex released the Umarex Walther PPS . The model is an exact copy of "Walther pps" (Polizei -Pistole-Sclank). The development of this pistol was carried out almost from the initial level. This approach to the production of these weapons is non-standard. The production method differs from others used by other gun manufacturers who have modernized existing models by reducing the length and grip.

Due to the innovative approach, it was possible to achieve optimal weapon sizes. The thickness of the pistol has been reduced and, as a result, a compact pistol has been created that is excellent for both civilians and law enforcement officers.

The pneumatic version of the Umarex Walther PPS pistol very accurately replicates its combat counterpart. The plastic frame and metal bolt of the pistol are identical to the original. Aiming devices are marked with white dots. These include a rear sight, which is adjustable, and a fixed front sight. Thanks to the under-barrel guide on the Umarex Walther PPS, it is possible to install both a laser designator and a flashlight.

The safety design has been changed - the button is located on the trigger. The bolt release lever does not move, but is manufactured as one piece with the bolt. This is the main difference between pneumatics and a combat pistol. The back of the handle contains a compartment in which the spray can is located. The lid of this compartment contains the key, so there is no need to carry it separately with you.

The bullet speed at the beginning of flight for this model is good. There is a Blowback function, which simulates the effect of recoil and jerking of the shutter when firing. the Umarex Walther PPS air pistol has attracted sympathy from interested female representatives, as well as from men who have a small hand size.

Air pistol Umarex Walther CP99 4.5 mm

The gas-cylinder pneumatic pistol Umarex Walther CP99 is a modern model from the famous German arms brand, combining similarities with military weapons, compactness, power and shooting accuracy, which makes it particularly popular among both fans of entertaining pneumatic shooting and among fans of target shooting . The secret of the success of the Umarex Walther CP 99 is that this pneumatic is a copy of the legendary German firearm Walther P99. This can be understood by the name of the model. The rifled barrel of the pistol ensures high accuracy of fire. The firing speed from the umarex walther cp99 is, in principle, not too high, but for the tasks for which the pistol is designed, this figure can be considered optimal - 120 m/s. Umarex Walther CP 99 also has a distinctive feature. The firing range of this pistol reaches approximately four hundred meters. Not every manufacturer of air guns can boast such an indicator of the firing range of their products. But for Umarex this is practically the norm. Actually, this is why shooters value weapons with the characteristic symbols of a given brand. The pistol weighs seven hundred and twenty grams. This weight may seem to some to be too much for an air gun, but for most shooters, on the contrary, holding a massive pistol in their hands is a blessing, because the feeling of communicating with it is simply wonderful. “There is no overwhelming feeling of plasticity that is typical of shooting with lightweight plastic air pistols,” as the professionals call it. The Umarex Walther CP 99 weighs 720 grams due to its all-metal construction, which gives it sufficient strength. Such pistols are valued in the weapons world, because they are much more reliable and durable than other weapons. The energy source is a 12g CO2 cylinder, placed in a magazine with an original lever puncture system, which allows you to quickly bring the pistol into a “combat” state. For shooting from pneumatics of this model, lead bullets of 4.5 mm caliber are used. The capacity of the drum-clip is 8 bullets. The pistol is equipped with a spare drum-clip and a convenient plastic carrying case. The pistol is certified as a product structurally similar to a weapon, with a power of up to 3 J, which allows you to purchase it without any restrictions and eliminates the need to look for a place specially equipped for shooting for training, of which there are not very many in our country yet.

The manufacturer may make changes to the contents, color, design and/or software of the product without prior notice to users.

Design

The Umarex Walther P38 pneumatic has good power and accuracy, but it is not suitable for athletes, only for low-level competitions. But with this pistol you can have great fun outdoors when shooting at bottles. Connoisseurs of historical replicas will be able to confidently choose this model for their collection.

Umarex Walter P38 is as similar as possible to its combat counterpart. Both in appearance and in the performance of all mechanisms and components, there are no non-working elements among them. The barrel box stopper flag, the bolt delay, the safety lever are functioning, and the magazine release button is in the place where it should be - at the bottom of the handle. The handle has an eyelet for a carabiner with a strap. The cheeks on the handle are made of plastic, it imitates wood, they have grooved linings.

The replica pistol fires 4.5 mm copper-plated balls. The barrel is made of metal and has no rifling. The principle of operation is a CO2 gas cartridge, simulating the return of the bolt. A 12 g cylinder is installed, the clamping screw is located under the cheek of the handle. This compartment can be accessed from the left side. The overlay is removed by “tearing off” at the bottom.

All elements of the pistol are made of aluminum alloy. The outer coating is black paint, which imitates bluing. The standard sights are a rear sight and a front sight; they are not adjustable.

The release mechanism is single. The first manipulation is the usual jerking of the shutter. Subsequently, shots are fired by self-cocking. The trigger is on the outside, precisely positioned as in a combat pistol. Manual safety. Its lever is on the left side. We must not forget that in the “stop” mode it is in a lowered, not raised state.

The pistol magazine is released by pressing the latch, which is located at the bottom of the handle. The clip is charged with 20 copper-plated balls through the top of the round hole (first, the tongue of the pusher must be pressed down and snapped into place). Then remove the decorative cheek of the handle from the left side, catching it in the recess from below. A CO2 cylinder is placed in the compartment and secured with a screw. There is no need to tighten the clamping bolt too much, otherwise you can jam the bolt.

To fire the first shot, you must either pull the bolt or cock the hammer. Then the shooting is carried out by self-cocking until the cylinder or bullets in the magazine run out. When the last cartridge leaves the clip, the shutter is delayed. The bolt frame is released using a lever located on the left side, above the trigger guard.

When the safety is active (the lever points down), the trigger hook is completely jammed - the safety latch holds the trigger sear lever and does not allow the bolt to move. Do not apply force to the trigger and bolt without making sure that the safety is not set to the “Fire” position, otherwise you may break the trigger mechanism.

When the shutter is pulled, it catches the rammer, it slides freely along the bypass tube of the expansion chamber, and pulls it behind it. The bullet from the magazine is fed into the rammer hole. After the bolt returns to its original position, the rammer enters the plastic coupling on the barrel and connects to it. So, the cartridge is in the breech. The Walter mechanism allows you to pull the bolt one more time and place a second steel ammunition in the barrel.

Before shooting, the safety flag must be positioned all the way up. The trigger press is transmitted by a rod (located on the right side, under the lower part of the body) to the trigger sear rod, and this allows the latter to break away from the firing position. The trigger hits the firing pin, which passes through the blowback piston, and with a sharp short-term movement it presses the bypass valve. A certain volume of gas supplied from the cylinder affects both the bullet in the barrel and the blowback system.

Air pistol Umarex Walther PPS 4.5 mm

The combat prototype of this air pistol is the “Walther PPS” (Polizei Pistole Schlank - thin police pistol), released in 1975. The word “thin” in the name of the pistol is not accidental. Unlike other arms companies that developed compact models of pistols based on the modernization of their larger prototypes (shortening the length and handle), Walter specialists created a new design from scratch. The result was a reduction in the thickness of the weapon. Thus, one of the most compact pistols was created for use by law enforcement officers, special forces and as a civilian self-defense weapon. For the first time, a new air pistol under the name “Umarex Walther PPS” (article 5.8139) was demonstrated at the “Shot Show 2014” weapons exhibition. The air pistol is a fairly accurate reproduction of its combat counterpart (option using the largest capacity magazine). Like its firearm counterpart, the bolt of the pistol is made of metal, and the frame is made of plastic. The magazine release lever (in the pneumatic version it is not full-size, the so-called “pencil” type) is integrated into the trigger guard. Sights - a fixed front sight and an adjustable rear sight are marked with white dots. The main difference between the Umarex Walther PPS and the combat prototype is the changed safety design (button on the trigger) and the non-functional bolt release lever (it is stationary and integral with the bolt). The spray can installation compartment is located at the rear of the handle. The clamping screw is hidden with a hexagonal key hole. At the same time, you do not need to carry any separate key with you - the key is integrated into the lid of the CO2 cartridge compartment. According to statements, a new system for simulating shutter recoil (blowback) was used, in which increased recoil was achieved without increasing CO2 consumption. Due to its compactness, this model of air pistol will especially appeal to men with small hands and the fairer sex.

The manufacturer may make changes to the contents, color, design and/or software of the product without prior notice to users.

Walter P38 equipment

Umarex Walter P38 is packaged in a beautiful cardboard package, with a model of the pistol and the torso of a German soldier drawn directly on it. In addition to the pistol with a magazine, the package contains an instruction manual, but it is not in Russian. However, this is compensated by the many large pictures, taking into account which everything is clear even without it.

Walther P38 disassembly

Complete disassembly of Walter is quite difficult. There is no special need for this. To clean or lubricate the gun, partial disassembly is sufficient.

It is done as follows:

  1. First you need to get a store.
  2. Next, the cylinder compartment opens and the cylinder itself is disconnected from the fittings.
  3. Afterwards, the bolt frame stopper flag, which is located near the trigger guard, is pressed, and the barrel is pulled out moving forward.
  4. With one hand, the bolt is pulled back, closing the imitation hole for ejecting the cartridge, so the return spring will not fly away.
  5. The shutter frame is removed.

If complete disassembly is required, then it is necessary to continue the work; it begins by unscrewing the large bolt on the right side on the cheek of the handle.

Then you need to do the following work:

  1. Place the gun with the right side facing up.
  2. Remove 6 bolts - 2 on top of the bolt guide, 1 near the trigger guard, 1 on top of the handle and 2 on the bottom.
  3. Remove the flat spring that secures the trigger rod.
  4. Set aside the right side of the gun body.
  5. Disassemble the release mechanism.
  6. Take out the gas mechanism.
  7. Unscrew the 2 bolts on the bolt, securing the blowback piston, and remove it.

Air pistol Umarex Walther P38

The legendary Walther P38 from Umarex

There are many weapon models with the famous name Walther. However, for many, the name Walter is associated specifically with the Walther P38 model pistol. This legendary pistol was popular not only in the German army, but also among the Soviet military. The pistol was considered an excellent trophy and was also used as a reward weapon.

The Umarex Walther P38 pneumatic model exactly replicates the external image of the firearm prototype. The pistol is made of metal and has a black glossy finish. On the left side of the frame is the Walter logo and the name of the pistol - P38. The handles are made of plastic, matching the color of wood. The pistol weighs 800 grams, which also adds resemblance to a real weapon.

It can be immediately noted that the model has a blowback function, that is, the shutter moves during shooting. When firing, the shutter does not just move, but cocks the trigger for the next shot. The pistol has a single action trigger mechanism, so the hammer must be cocked before firing. Subsequently, the hammer is cocked automatically by moving the bolt. If you jerk the bolt of an unloaded pistol, it remains on the bolt stop. The bolt is returned to its original position by pressing the bolt stop lever located on the left side of the pistol frame, above the trigger.

The fuse in the P38 model is located in the same way as on the Walter firearm. With the flag in a horizontal position, the pistol is released from the safety catch. The letter “F” is visible near the safety, indicating that the pistol is ready to fire. To put the gun on safety, you need to push the lever down. In this case, you can cock the hammer or pull the bolt, but when you press the trigger, the hammer will not go down, but will remain in the cocked state.

In addition to the safety and the bolt stop lever, there is another flag on the frame of the pistol, which serves to fix the barrel. The beginning of partial disassembly of the Umarex Walther P38 pistol corresponds to the steps for disassembling a combat pistol. To do this, you need to switch the lever from the horizontal position forward towards the barrel. Then, along the guides, separate the barrel along with part of the trigger mechanism from the pistol frame.

The pistol uses 4.5 mm steel balls for firing. The magazine holds as many as 20 charges. To remove the magazine for loading ammunition, you need to slide the latch, which is located in the lower right part of the handle. For example, while holding the pistol with your right hand, we move the button to the right, with the thumb of your left hand, and with your index finger we pick up the heel of the magazine, and remove it from the handle. The balls are loaded into a hole at the top of the cage. The hole is through, so when charging one side must be closed with your finger. Before loading ammunition, the ball rammer must be moved into the base of the magazine and locked by turning to the right.

To install the gas canister, you need to remove the left cover on the handle. First, the magazine is removed, and then the plastic cover is snapped off. When you separate the cover, you can see that the magazine latch is attached to it. The cylinder is inserted into the compartment, in the middle of the handle, and tightened with a clamping screw. Then the left pad is installed back, and then the magazine is inserted.

We remove the pistol from the safety and you can fire. Before the first shot, you need to jerk the shutter or simply cock the trigger. The trigger travel is small, light at first, and then with some effort before the descent itself. After the shot, the bolt rolls back and cocks the hammer for the next shot. Since the bolt is metal and has a noticeable weight, recoil is felt when firing. The pistol exhibits good accuracy for a ball launcher, so you can shoot not only at cans and other large objects, but also from a short distance at paper targets.
