Purpose of transfer transmission
This unit is necessary to divide the torque for the two axles of the off-road vehicle. But that's not all. This unit allows you to increase the torque during the process in difficult areas due to a lower gear.
This gearbox is two-stage and is capable of doubling the number of gearbox gears. This allows you to more conveniently operate the SUV in the most difficult conditions.
Device
So, inside the transfer case there is a drive shaft, drive shafts for the rear and front axles, a gear transmission, and a reduction gear. The transmission receives torque directly from the gearbox drive shaft. The transfer case is attached to the rear of the gearbox using special connecting elements. This unit is centered on the outer part of the bearing - it is double-row and is located on the gearbox, on the secondary shaft. The parking brake elements are located on the rear wall of the transfer case.
There are two shafts inside the unit. This is the leading and intermediate. They are fixed by bearings. The design also includes drive shafts for the front and rear axles. They are equipped with spur gears, thanks to which the engagement is carried out.
A drive shaft with splines at the end enters the transfer case from the gearbox. A drive element for the rear axle is installed in the same plane with this shaft. It is also fixed using bearings. Between the rear axle shaft bearings there is a speedometer gear.
The rotation of the intermediate mechanism is ensured by two bearings. One of them is ball type, the second is roller type. The front axle drive shaft along with the gear is located at the bottom of the box. It rotates thanks to two ball bearings.
On the UAZ Patriot, the transfer case is also equipped with a lever through which the driver can control the operation of the transmission. The control mechanism consists of two rods and two forks. These elements are at the top of the node. Using the lever, you can turn the rear and front axles on or off, or use both axles.
The mechanism also includes oil seals, seals, fittings, flanges, and an oil drain plug. The device does not require maintenance. However, various preventive and repair work is periodically required. Most often, new oil is poured into the UAZ Patriot transfer case, oil seals or worn gears are replaced.
The difference between the old-style transfer case.
Torque is transmitted to the transfer case from the gearbox using the drive shaft. Centering is carried out along the outer race of the bearing. The parking brake elements are located on the rear wall.
Important elements of the transfer case are 2 shafts: drive and intermediate. They are fixed by a bearing system. The drive shafts are equipped with gears that ensure their engagement.
The design provides for a lever that is directly controlled. The mechanism is made in the form of rods and forks located at the top. If it is necessary to engage a lower range of gears, the driver must directly operate the lever.
In addition, the system contains a large number of small elements, such as oil seals that protect the system from oil loss, auxiliary bearings and gears.
New transfer case
As already noted, Patriot models after the 2014 model year were equipped with new gearboxes from the Korean brand Hyundai-Dymos. But in fact, the mechanism is manufactured in China under license. This handout has a good pedigree. It is enough that this mechanism was developed back in the 80s by Japanese engineers. Almost the same transfer cases were installed on the Kia Sorento and Hyundai Terracan. This suggests that the design is quite successful. And since it is suitable for the Japanese and Koreans, then it will be just right for the Patriot, say reviews from the owners.
Mechanics are simple and clear. What can you say about the electrical design? Transfer cases of the previous generation were purely mechanical. All-wheel drive was connected using the force of the driver's hands, who set the selector to the desired position. The UAZ Patriot transfer case from Daimos is electric. To switch to the desired mode, just turn the washer or rotary controller. The rest will be done by the electric motor, which controls the rods and forks inside the mechanism.
UAZ Patriot manual transmission repair in Moscow
The fact that the box is faulty will be indicated by deviations from the norm and non-standard manifestations in its operation. It is better to react to them immediately. After all, operating a car with impaired gearbox functions can lead to emergency situations. And one more argument - the less the load on the faulty part, the greater the chance of eliminating the defect through repair rather than replacement. The greater the likelihood that other spare parts will not begin to fail. A pure calculation that will benefit your car.
To avoid unnecessary problems, contact our car service center. We accept cars from 9 am, close at 9 pm, and carry out diagnostics for free. Literally in half an hour you will know what’s wrong with your UAZ, whether the gearbox and clutch need repairs or whether it’s enough to make an adjustment and change the oil.
Owners' reaction
The absence of the usual lever in the cabin causes ambivalent feelings among owners. This part is available even in serious imported SUVs. But on the other hand, the round selector looks more modern and elegant. The reader can see it in the photo below.
This is a normal approach of a manufacturer who would like to catch up with global automakers.
Features of the Korean "Daimos"
Experienced SUV owners with the installation of a new transfer case will immediately notice lower noise levels. Due to the use of a multi-row Morse chain in the design, the cabin became significantly quieter. The reader can see the chain itself in the photo below.
On the UAZ Patriot car, the Korean transfer case does not reduce the ground clearance - under it there are as many as 32 centimeters to the ground, which is even more than above the main gear. It will not become a bottleneck that limits cross-country ability.
Numerous test drives show that this mechanism could use additional protection for the transfer case. UAZ Patriot does not have such an option as standard. The electric motor protrudes outwards. And when moving through ravines, swamps and other obstacles, it can be easily damaged.
As for the technical characteristics, the overall dimensions of the mechanism have increased, and the torque has increased due to other gear ratios. This became the reason for the need to replace the cardan shafts. So, the front one was strengthened, and the rear one was shortened. The intermediate support was also removed. This is a big plus in favor of the Korean-Chinese mechanism. The design is more reliable, and the vibrations of the cardan are not strong.
The mechanism body is made of aluminum. And inside it are not the usual gears, but a chain. Due to the use of a different design, the low-range gear ratios increased by 31 percent. Now the gear ratio is 2.56. The car can move more confidently over rough terrain due to increased torque. On mechanical versions this was achieved through tuning.
Causes of failure of the UAZ Patriot (Dymos) manual transmission - transmission repair
- The transfer case of an all-wheel drive UAZ has failed. A malfunction of this part of the transmission is indicated by noise, vibration, oil leaks, and shocks when cornering. We will carry out comprehensive diagnostics, repair or replace the transfer case.
- Individual elements of the gearbox, gears, and bearings have worn out . To restore normal driving, we will remove the unit, perform troubleshooting, identify damaged elements, and replace them with serviceable ones. When installing new gears, we will adjust the alignment of the shafts, this will make the box quieter.
- The SUV has tires of different diameters . The difference in the size of the front and rear tires affects the operation of the transfer case. Due to uneven load, the center differential wears out faster, and problems may arise with the satellites of the front or rear axles. To eliminate the defect, we will repair the UAZ Patriot transmission. We advise the driver to replace the “different” tires with the same ones.
- The gear lock is broken or the elements of the shift mechanism are deformed . Such defects lead to spontaneous shutdown of the selected gear. We repair UAZ Patriot manual transmissions and replace worn parts.
- There was an oil leak. Reasons: the gaskets are worn out, the crankcase is damaged. Oil can also leak through worn drive shaft seals. In this case, we will restore the tightness of the system and replace the transmission fluid.
- The fastenings and bolted connections of the box have become loose . We will do a tightening and restore the strength of the fasteners of all components of the manual transmission.
- The input shaft oil seal has worn out, and leaks have appeared between the gearbox and the engine. Because of this, gears and bearings are at risk of wear. As a result, the box begins to hum, which can lead to complete breakdown of the UAZ Patriot manual transmission. To eliminate this defect, we replace the input shaft oil seal and check other parts for wear and damage.
- Neglect of operating rules . Repair of the UAZ Patriot manual transmission may be required if you do not regularly change the gearbox oil or have filled in poor quality oil. If the driver prefers aggressive driving. All this will lead you to diagnostics and subsequent restoration of the gearbox.
- The gearshift lever is poorly fixed (dangling). The reason is wear of the internal retainer. Consequences - at a certain moment the driver simply will not be able to activate the gear. Worn parts of the box should be replaced.
- The synchronizers are worn out, the shift forks are damaged. These breakdowns lead to difficult shifting or crunching gears.
- The synchronizer clutch broke, resulting in the gear being knocked out. In each case, we will diagnose and replace faulty parts.
Mechanical transfer case: tuning
On UAZ Patriot vehicles, the transfer case can be modified using tuning. So, by replacing gears, you can adjust the torque in low and direct gears. The design is being modified to eliminate noise.
Modifications are possible that solve the problem of self-switching downshift. In addition, the design of the box is not highly reliable and sometimes it is necessary to strengthen its attachment to the body. You can also modify the box in such a way that it allows you to completely disable the front axle.
Typical faults
Possible breakdowns include the appearance of noise, failure of gears, leaks through seals, and destruction of bearings. Long trips with incorrectly inflated tires lead to these problems. Also, malfunctions often result from the front axle being on for too long. It should only be connected when necessary. If on a UAZ Patriot the transfer case (transfer case) is poorly screwed to the body, this may cause noise.
Poor quality of bearings is one of the problems of this mechanism. Due to poor quality, these parts often fail. Often breakdowns are associated with low oil levels or lack of oil inside.
On a UAZ Patriot car, repair of a new type transfer case may be necessary for the same reasons. Owners report problems with the chain and bearings. However, despite these figures, sales of such vehicles indicate good demand for electric transfer cases. These cars sell much better than the basic versions equipped with a mechanical domestic transfer case.
When a UAZ Patriot gearbox needs repair - symptoms
We will present typical signs that indicate problems with manual transmission. If at least one point you find matches with the non-standard behavior of your Patriot, then be sure to visit a specialized manual transmission repair service.
Main symptoms of a malfunction
- Knocks out gears.
- There was a noise in the operating gearbox.
- To change gear you need to make an effort.
- It is impossible to engage any of the gears.
- There are clicks and crackling noises when switching.
- You began to notice oil leaks in the area of the transmission.
Symptoms can occur individually or several at once. In any case, it won’t go away on its own.
