While many Niva fans are expecting the release of a completely modified model, AvtoVAZ has decided to restyling the old version, which will become a little more modern, but will retain common features in appearance, as well as modest interior equipment. Niva Urban 2018 will still remain the unpretentious workhorse that the old model was, and will be better able to overcome all kinds of off-road conditions.

History of creation

Izhevsky fought with AvtoVAZ for the production of the Niva. Until 2009, the model did not change in any way except for small details. Since 2009, the chassis has been modernized, constant velocity joints (CV joints) began to be used in the transmission, the interior has changed slightly, and the painting technology has become more modern. The exterior design has remained virtually unchanged during this time, with the exception of a light plastic body kit. All this allows the model to be actively sold, and its production is planned until the beginning of 2021.

The largest modernization in the entire history of the Niva concerned the Urban modification, the production of which was launched on October 1, 2014 by the AvtoVAZ subsidiary PSA VIS-Auto. The production volume is small - several thousand copies are produced per year. The inspiration for the modernization of the Lada Niva 4×4 Urban was the former CEO of the company, Bo Andersson, and the chief designer, Steve Martin.

To suit the new style, the bumpers were changed, different rims were installed, and the ground clearance was reduced.

Exterior Features

It’s simply hard to call the Lada Niva Urban 4x4 an old Niva . Perhaps someone likes a forty-year-old model in terms of appearance, but over this long period of time its design has become very outdated. The updated model pleases with an innovative approach to its design. Yes, the characteristic features of previous versions are still visible, but the restyled model looks more stylish and modern.

A modified radiator grille, a fashionable windshield wiper installed on the third door - all this looks very holistic and harmonious. I would also like to highlight the stylish and comfortable door handles, as well as 17-inch diameter wheels. But the plastic bumpers attract the most attention. They look much more harmonious than metal models. At the same time, such a solution made it possible to shorten the vehicle somewhat, which has a positive effect on the maneuverability of the car. Thus, the length of the car is only 364 centimeters (for example, the length of the compact Suzuki Jimny reaches as much as 369.5 cm).

In principle, there are no other significant differences. There are a few other little touches, like a removable tow bar or a door ornament on the new models, but such innovations aren't immediately noticeable, so we won't dwell on them for long.

Specifications

The modern version of the Niva, despite the body kits, still remains a compact off-road vehicle with a monocoque body. The dimensions of the car have remained virtually unchanged. The length is 3 m 74 cm, the height is only 1 m 64 cm, and the width is 1 m 68 cm. Despite the understatement, the ground clearance is still an indicator of cross-country ability and is 220 mm. The dimensions do not differ from those of the first VAZ 2121. Separately, it is worth mentioning the long-wheelbase Niva with five doors - it does not differ from the three-door version in height and width, but is 50 mm longer in length. The ground clearance also remained unchanged.

Engine and transmission

Electronic fuel injection technology began to be used at AvtoVAZ only in the late nineties, becoming real progress. The engine of the VAZ 2121 and all subsequent modifications with a displacement of 1.7 liters originates from the VAZ 2106 engine with a displacement of 1.3 liters. The Urban version is equipped with a derated power plant with a volume of 1.8 liters and a power of 90 hp. With. It is placed on the subframe along with a new steering rack. According to the engineers, this solution should breathe new life into the Niva. The power supply and ignition systems also underwent changes, which made it possible to increase the volume of the combustion chamber, but fuel consumption decreased slightly. Otherwise, this is the same power plant developed in the 70s, although deeply modernized.

The new Niva uses a five-speed manual transmission. The transfer gearbox remains the same two-speed with the ability to lock the center differential. This transmission is also used on the 5-door version of the Lada Niva Urban. As on the first models, permanent all-wheel drive is used here; the speed and dynamic characteristics leave much to be desired. VAZ 21214 and VAZ 2131 can accelerate to a maximum of 140 km/h.

Fuel consumption does not change depending on the engine upgrade; at the moment it is 10 liters on the highway, 14 liters in the city and about 12 liters in mixed mode.

Chassis

High ground clearance coupled with all-wheel drive has always been an advantage of the VAZ SUV. Ground clearance is ensured by the use of an independent front suspension with transverse wishbones and an anti-roll bar. At the rear, a dependent suspension is installed on transverse and trailing arms. The 5-door version uses an identical suspension system. In addition to the airbag, the car is equipped with a diagonal brake system, complemented by an anti-lock braking system. Ease of control is provided by the power steering wheel.

Concept and history of creation [edit | edit code ]

In 1969-1970, VAZ chief designer V.S. Solovyov came up with the initiative to develop an all-terrain vehicle for residents of rural areas. His proposal was the result of the development of the so-called “type” of the USSR Ministry of Automotive Industry for 1971-1980, at that time delegated to IMZ (Izhmash). Prototypes of the AZLK-415 and −416 and Izh-14 had already been created, but these vehicles were not ready for mass production.

In the summer of 1970, Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR Alexei Kosygin set the teams at VAZ, AZLK and Izhmash the task of creating an all-terrain passenger car with the comfort of mass-produced passenger models. In particular, according to the recollections of the participants in the meeting at the OGK (department of the chief designer) at VAZ, after showing him a metal-plaster model of “car No. 2” (a luxury version of the Zhiguli, later VAZ-2103), he said the following:

“Work with Fiat ends here (as stipulated by the contract), and from now on you will have to rely only on yourself. So, your first independent step should be to create an all-terrain vehicle based on the Zhiguli for our villagers. And they unwittingly found themselves deprived - we will now give millions of city residents a modern passenger car, but for the village it is of little use, especially for our “outback” [1].

In April 1971, the first technical council was held, at which the design features of the new car were chosen. Proponents of the classical approach to design offered an option with a frame body, dependent wheel suspension, and drum brakes at the front and rear. There were also more radical proposals, including a transverse layout and independent suspension. The designers began developing documentation in the summer of 1971, and already in April 1972 the first prototype was manufactured [2].

In an interview with Itogi magazine, the creator of the Niva, Pyotr Mikhailovich Prusov, said that the car was named in honor of Prusov’s children - Natalya and Irina, and the children of the first chief designer of VAZ V.S. Solovyov - Vadim and Andrey [3] [4].

Test drive Niva 4×4 and Suzuki Jimny

The Niva's interior is more spacious, the cabin is noticeably wider, but slightly lower. The driver's position of the domestic SUV is less comfortable. To sit comfortably behind the wheel, you need to be a stooped dwarf with short legs and very long arms. During the road to the test site, it was noted that the noise from the engine and transmission in the Niva’s cabin was noticeably greater than in a foreign car. The engine of the Jimny is noticeably more elastic and high-torque than that of the VAZ model.

The appearance of pistons with a diameter of 82 mm in the arsenal of AvtoVAZ engineers allowed them to finally begin creating a more powerful engine for the Niva. The 1.6-liter 2121 engine was taken as the basis, but with a lower block height. An increase in the cylinder diameter by 3 mm gave an increase in working volume by 100 cubic meters and torque by 10 Nm.

Among the other innovations, we note:

  • a Solex-type carburetor finally replaced the outdated Ozone;
  • a modern contactless ignition system has appeared;
  • original pistons with part of the combustion chamber in the bottom;
  • new crankshaft with eight counterweights;
  • cooling system with an aluminum radiator instead of a brass one.

With the help of simple modifications you can increase the volume to 1.8 liters.

Appearance Features

Representatives of AvtoVAZ planned to produce a modern car and, judging by the design of Vesta, the plant is capable of doing this. In the case of the new Niva, this is not the case; outwardly, Urban does not stand out as anything special. When modernizing, engineers rarely change the exterior to reduce cost. In the appearance of the car it is noted:

  1. The new generation is equipped with a body-colored front bumper made primarily of plastic. Its shape has also changed, it is difficult to say whether this is correct or not. The appearance has changed for the better, but from a practical point of view this is not a very good solution. The old bumper was practically “indestructible”.
  2. Niva Urban is equipped with new R16 alloy wheels.
  3. The decorative radiator grille has changed and is now black.
  4. The front part has no hint of aerodynamic characteristics; it is made in a vertical plane of almost 90 degrees. When driving at high speed, the resistance of oncoming air increases, so the car is unstable when driving on the highway.
  5. The shape of the side mirrors has been changed; they can be black or painted in body color.
  6. The rear wiper has changed. The brush has become longer, which allows you to clean a larger surface of the glass, thereby providing better visibility in the rain.
  7. The head optics have not undergone any changes and remain structurally simple. Niva Urban is equipped with conventional halogen lamps.

The wheel arches have increased slightly. This has become a necessity, since the car is equipped with 16-inch wheels even in the basic configuration.

Niva Urban, like its predecessors, looks simple, but it is easily distinguishable in traffic, which is what the designers wanted.

Salon

Unfortunately, what really needed changes did not receive them. We are talking about an interior in which there is nothing attractive at all. The new Niva Urban 4x4 2021 model year does not have any elements that increase comfort, does not even have the simplest multimedia and is still finished with cheap plastic and fabric, which are not very pleasant to the touch.

The most expensive part on the dashboard is the extremely simple audio system. It is located at the very bottom of the panel. Above it there are several rows of deflectors, stove settings and other useful options.

The best thing about the car is the tunnel. It houses the settings and controls of the gearbox, chassis, parking brake and even two cup holders. Another hole is at the very beginning, and it is quite spacious.

In addition to its main functions, the steering wheel can also adjust the road lighting using two buttons on the spokes. The steering wheel itself looks unpleasant and feels about the same in your hands. Under the wide rectangular visor there are dial instruments showing the speed at which the car is moving, as well as the speed developed by the engine. There is no on-board computer.

The chairs here are also extremely uncomfortable. Fabric upholstery, hard filling, lack of lateral support and any safety elements at all - all this is about the seats in the Niva. But in the rich configuration you can find heating, which is quite unexpected. While you can somehow sit in the front, only children can fit properly in the back, since there is practically no legroom between the rows. The sofa itself is not wide and short, although it is designed to seat three passengers.

Also, the trunk in the car has grown a little, but it is still not enough for normal travel when there are more than two people in the car.

Specifications

Let's look at what engines the Niva Urban SUV is equipped with. Owner reviews say that there is only one 1.7-liter unit in the line, based on the old Zhiguli engine. The only difference is the injection intake system. This is where all the improvements end. The power of this engine, according to car owners, is frankly not enough. There are 2 valves per cylinder - in 2021, this timing technology is no longer used by anyone. The maximum power that this unit can develop is 83 horsepower. What is the fuel consumption of Niva Urban? Owner reviews say that, despite the “injector” type intake system, the car remains as voracious as ever. So, per 100 kilometers it consumes about 15 liters of gasoline, and even more when off-road. The minimum figure was 9 liters, but this is in suburban mode.


As for the dynamics characteristics, the engine frankly lacks traction. Overtaking with such an engine is simply dangerous. To accelerate to 100 kilometers per hour, the Niva takes 19 seconds. The maximum speed is 142 kilometers per hour for the three-door version and 137 for the Niva Urban 5 door. Owner reviews also note that the transfer case makes a loud noise at speed. If you drive at a speed of more than 90 kilometers per hour, air begins to flow through the cabin. There is also a defect - the transfer case is mounted on only two supports.


Along with this, drivers note that the transfer case is misaligned with the main transmission. Because of this, at speeds above 80, wild noise and vibrations occur in the cabin. Even the use of new cardan shafts with CV joints did not correct this “disease”. The car behaves poorly at high speeds.

Technical specifications

When discussing the Lada 4x4 Urban, you cannot miss the technical characteristics of this vehicle . The new Lada Niva is equipped with a gasoline power unit, the volume of which reaches 1.7 liters. The engine power is 83 horsepower. Along with such an engine comes a five-speed manual gearbox. The presence of permanent all-wheel drive is pleasing, but at the same time, it does not have a low gear.

It is worth noting that the car does not start normally, but with the left hand. Thus, driving this car can feel like you are sitting in a Porsche.

The gears work quite clearly, switching is easy. I would also like to note the stable and uninterrupted operation of the clutch. But the first gear is too “short”, given the fairly good dynamics of the car.

The quality of sound insulation has also improved. As a result, the noise of the engine and other extraneous sounds will not distract the driver and passenger. This once again confirms that domestic automakers have begun to think more about comfort.

Driving the car is quite easy. As already mentioned, the model has a hydraulic booster, so you don’t need to work hard to rotate the steering wheel. At the same time, the car reacts to turning the steering wheel very accurately and quickly, although the profile of the tires is quite high. But in terms of rolls when cornering, they remained quite strong.

Exterior

If there is anywhere to look for differences between the Niva 2121 and Niva Urban, it is in the appearance of domestic crossovers.

If we talk about dimensions, then 2121 can offer the following parameters:

  • length 3720 mm;
  • height 1640 mm;
  • width 1680 mm;
  • wheelbase 2200 mm;
  • ground clearance 220 mm.

The external resemblance of Urban to the classic three-door Niva is obvious. Everyone can easily recognize this car in the model. At the same time, Steve Mattin, who worked on the Urban project, managed to make a small breakthrough. Even the usual square shapes were made more modern. This was achieved thanks to integrated bumpers at the front and rear, an original radiator grille, large exterior mirrors, black door handles, alloy wheels and curved windshield wipers.

AvtoVAZ’s desire to make the Niva a city car, calling it Urban, was reflected in the dimensions. As a result, the numbers are as follows:

  • length 3640 mm;
  • height 1640 mm;
  • width 1680 mm;
  • wheelbase 2200 mm;
  • ground clearance 220 mm.

This is objectively not enough to discern the difference between the two cars. Although we can say with confidence that Urban looks more modern and relevant in appearance.

Specifications

The supporting body, depending on the three- or five-door layout, is edited in overall dimensions of 3640-4140, 1680-1690 and 1640 mm. The center distance is 2200-2700, respectively, and the ground clearance is 220 and 205 mm. In the basic configuration, the new product offers:

  • all-wheel drive transmission equipped with a differential and transfer case;
  • combined spring-hydraulic suspension with long-stroke hydraulic shock absorbers;
  • disc and shoe brakes;
  • standard set of security systems.

A 1.7-liter gasoline internal combustion engine with output parameters of 83 hp / 129 Nm of peak thrust is proposed as a non-alternative power unit. The engine is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. The speed and consumption characteristics of the tandem are more than modest: the time to reach the first hundred is about 19 seconds, the maximum speed is 140 km/h.

In practice, this means that the new Lada Urban series is not adapted to the high speed traffic flow of modern megacities. A test drive showed fuel consumption over a 10-kilometer distance of 9.8-9.9 liters, which is quite a lot even for an 8-valve engine.

Technical characteristics of Lada 4×4 Urban: give urbanization!

External symbolism and the velvet revolution in design also gently emphasize technical changes. A very significant innovation in the design of the new Lada 4×4 Urban is the towing hook. Seriously. Now it has been made removable. This decision was dictated by the seamless image that, according to the designers, plastic bumpers created. Therefore, they didn’t dare drill into the plastic and they gave the towing hook directly to the owner along with a set of service tools.

As for urbanization, the VAZ marketing department slightly overdid it or missed the mark. There is nothing urban about this car. Alloy wheels are now installed on everything that moves, and plastic bumpers are clearly not a plus for driving in the city. Comfort, with which you can argue long and hard, but to no avail, does exist, but again at the level of that very Niva. Despite the fact that the factory declared new front seats, there are none. In place of the old Niv ones, there are seats from the eight. The control button for a single-cell air conditioner is located next to the Zhiguli heating and ventilation adjustment sliders, and the shaking and noise have not disappeared anywhere. The gearbox and transfer case are noisy, the Zhiguli engine, albeit an injection one, is chirping, and external noise actually enters the cabin unhindered.

Then longer-stroke shock absorbers, steering knuckles and lower arms from Shnivy were installed. This allowed the car to better grip the asphalt and be more stable in corners.

Exterior

The modernized Niva looks familiar and somewhat utilitarian in the photo in all projections. The front side of the new city SUV, which is most advantageous in terms of decoration, demonstrates:

  • an angular square front with a slight slope of the hood, combined turn signals and classic round headlights;
  • a massive plastic radiator trim complemented by a chrome-plated corporate logo;
  • a set of fog lamps embedded in the sides of the shaped bumper.

The layout of the front end is completed with a body kit with a platform for attaching a registration plate and a pair of towing eyes.

A new body in a side-by-side layout received a minimum of updates. In view are the simple geometry of door and window openings, massive mirrors, a small amount of relief on the sides of the body and protective sill trim. The off-road origins of the “urbanized” Niva are confirmed by short overhangs, high ground clearance and the volume of high wheel arches.

Two-thirds of the area of ​​the rear side of the body is occupied by a folding door glazed in the upper inclined section. Available: vertical rectangles of multifunctional lights, a platform for a license plate and a small-caliber exhaust pipe tip built into the left side of the plastic bumper.

In general, the body structure looks functional and monolithic, but does not evoke any special positive emotions.

Comparing Niva 2121 and Niva Urban

We have already mentioned some of the innovations introduced into the Niva Urban package earlier. Experts say that all other changes are purely symbolic. Let's see if this is true.

All changes can be divided into several groups:

      steering wheel with a reduced wheel diameter - 380 mm (on a regular Niva 2121 - 420 mm);

  3. car air conditioning;
  4. heated seats for the driver and passengers;

  8. between the front seats there are buttons for turning on the power windows and a joystick for adjusting the position of the mirrors;

  10. "Prior" lampshade for interior lighting.
  11. In design:
      removable towing device (on the bumpers under the plugs there is a thread for screwing in an eye);

  13. ICE with distributed injection;
  14. there are no cardan shafts in the transmission;
  15. drive shafts with constant velocity joints are installed to connect the transfer case with the gearboxes;

The small diameter of the steering wheel is justified by the fact that in this case it is more convenient for the driver to sit in the driver’s seat. Thanks to almost weightless control parts, Niva Urban is convenient to drive. Taking into account the increased visibility, parking has become much more rational.

New plastic bumpers are prone to scratching, especially when driving on off-road terrain. And the new body paint, thanks to double primer, guarantees the durability of the coating with improved anti-corrosion protection. The luggage compartment capacity is 265 liters. But this is not the limit. The trunk volume can be increased using a simple procedure: folding the rear row of seats. The resulting luggage compartment volume will be 585 liters. This is very convenient when transporting large items.

They say that big things can be seen from a distance. In a year and a half, Niva... oh, sorry, Lada 4x4 will be forty years old! And now one cannot help but admit that this is the most successful VAZ and one of the best domestic cars. The ancestor of all crossovers in the world. Our first non-military all-terrain vehicle. It has gone through a lot of modifications and improvements and is still in demand today. The current reason for the meeting is the new Urban modification. All-wheel drive with an urban accent? Why not?

FROM THE BEST CELLARS

A car is not wine; it doesn't get better with age. And in the case of Lada 4x4? In the year of its thirtieth anniversary, which was celebrated in 2007, up to 87% of VAZ exports were from this model. The annual production was about 35 thousand cars. Then a large-scale modernization was carried out with the expectation that the car’s potential would be enough until 2015. Was it enough?

In the first half of this year, 20,800 cars were sold - a thousand more than in the same period last year. Lada 4×4 is one of the ten best-selling models on the Russian market! And in terms of the number of domestically produced components (75%) it is the leader among Tolyatti cars.

Urban is not the last variation of the old lady. A new modernization is coming. This time the calculation is for five years: the car should remain in production until 2021. Then, if everything goes according to plan, a new generation will see the light. There are plans, there are contracts, there is a soulless designation of Lada 4x4. And there is a well-known name that now belongs to the GM-AVTOVAZ joint venture...

Having familiarized yourself with the exterior of the Lada 4×4 Urban, it’s worth taking a look inside this car. First of all, the small steering wheel with a diameter of 38 cm is somewhat confusing (in the old version it reached 42 cm). At the same time, such an innovation was expected. Even more, this solution has become a significant advantage of the model, because with the built-in power steering there is absolutely no need for a massive steering wheel. At the same time, the compact steering wheel allows you to customize the driver’s workplace as conveniently as possible.

But the innovations that affect the comfort of the driver and passengers do not end there. The seat heating function allows you to feel great when driving in a car, regardless of the time of year.

The entire interior has become newer. This is facilitated by the modern lining of the floor tunnel. I'm glad that there are cup holders - now you can conveniently put a cup of coffee or a bottle of water there, without fear that the liquid will splash on you.

Side mirrors can be adjusted to suit you using an electric drive. In principle, the option is not very important, but quite pleasant. In addition, the outside mirrors are heated, which greatly helps with visibility in the cold season. Additionally, this parameter is increased by the extended rear window cleaning area. In general, the visibility of the new vehicle is excellent.

Specifics of the interior and exterior

In all its qualities, the Russian Lada Niva of the Urban series, released in 2021, has the parameters of a standard SUV. And this is taking into account Russian roads, which in some places simply leave much to be desired. The car is perfect for country roads, forest roads and other off-road conditions. There are constant things, for example, the body type - a station wagon with 3 doors and 4 seats. But there is something new that distinguishes the new product from other versions of the same car.

The spectacular exterior has the following characteristics and features:

  1. The glass is slightly tinted with the light transmission allowed by Russian law.
  2. The wheels are light alloy and durable.
  3. Pirelli brand tires will allow you to use your vehicle for a long time without additional replacement.
