Gas installation for UAZ carburetor

How to set up 4th generation gas equipment yourself

Last updated - October 12, 2021 at 04:41

After gas equipment is installed on the car, it is necessary to correctly adjust its operation. Also, during the operation of a vehicle on gas or after repair, diagnostics and then calibration/adjustment of the gas system may be required.

In this article we will tell you how to configure the 4th generation HBO with your own hands.

What you need to set up

Fuel consumption, and most importantly, engine life, depends on the quality adjustment of the gas system; to adjust it yourself, you will need:

  • laptop, tablet or smartphone;
  • software;
  • diagnostic cable (we will use it) or bluetooth scanner (OBD2);
  • sufficient amount of fuel in petrol/gas tanks (10-15 l.).

Programs for 4th generation HBO diagnostics can be downloaded for free on the websites of equipment manufacturers or the resources of their official representatives. The program may have a slightly different interface, but essentially they are all similar. But you will have to buy or make the cord yourself. We wrote about how to make a cable with your own hands here, and a Bluetooth adapter here.

Adjustment process

With proper setup, it is important that the car is in full working order. The ignition systems (plugs, coils, wires) and fuel must work flawlessly.

The engine must be warmed up to operating temperature (80-95˚C). Turn off all consumers (lighting, air conditioning, radio), and also leave the power steering alone. Then connect the corresponding connectors of the diagnostic cable to the block of the LPG electronic control unit and to the computer. As a rule, the chip/connector is located under the hood next to the gas ECU.

Auto-tuning

Having entered the program interface (consider the example of the Stag program, you can familiarize yourself with the software in more detail here), you need to set the basic data. To do this, in the “parameters” - “vehicle parameters” tab, set the required values:

  1. Quantity cylinders (everything is clear here).
  2. Number of cylinders to the coil (depending on the type of car ignition system). The correctness of the set values can be checked by comparing the readings from the right column of the program. The idle speed (idle) of the engine should coincide as closely as possible with the tachometer readings on the car’s instrument panel.
  3. If the engine speed is taken from the camshaft sensor, check the appropriate box, but here you need to know the number of pulses issued per shaft revolution (in most cases this is 1 pulse).
  4. The “speed signal” can be left at 2.5 V.
  5. With floating engine speeds, you need to check the “RPM signal filter” checkbox.
  6. Select engine type standard/turbo.
  7. If the type of lambda probe is not known, it is better to leave the factory settings of the program and skip this point. But it’s important to know whether gasoline injection is phased or paired (most often it’s phased).
  8. Next, go to the “gas controller settings” tab:

  1. We set the switch-on temperature (switching to gas) in the range from 30-35˚C (if the evaporator reducer is worn out or in the winter season, you can set it to 40-45 degrees).
  2. The engine speed at which the car switches to gas fuel can be set in the range of 500-650 rpm.
  3. The turn-on time is the delay time for the start of the HBO when starting a warm engine. We set it to 3-60 seconds, not a very important parameter, it is needed to stabilize the operation of the gasoline engine. injectors.
  4. We leave the cylinder disconnection as is. The parameter is needed for a more discreet transition to gas; it can be configured individually.
  5. In regions with a hot climate, a “warm start” is allowed. Under other conditions, it is better to skip this point.
  6. We leave the minimum gas temperature as it is. When the actual gas ˚t drops below this parameter, the system will switch to gasoline.
  7. We set the minimum gas speed to 300-400 rpm. If this value decreases, the internal combustion engine will switch to gasoline.
  1. Max. We leave the gas load at 100%.
  2. The pressure error time can be left at 300 ms.
  3. Fuel type LPG – propane-butane or CNG – methane.
  4. The operating pressure of the gearbox is adjusted during auto-calibration (up to 1.4), and the minimum is set to 0.5-0.6 bar (when it decreases, the system will turn on gasoline).
  5. We set the type of injectors in accordance with the installed ones.
  6. Warming up can be turned on, this will lead to activation of the injectors after a long period of parking.
  7. We leave “extra injections” as is.
  8. The markings of the reducer and gas temperature sensors also need to be known during installation. The temperature of the gearbox should approximately coincide with the temperature. ICE on the standard indicator.
  9. We install the gas level indicator according to the marking.

The “advanced settings” tab contains parameters for more advanced/fine-tuning. Here you should only allow emergency gas launches and their number.

Then go to the “auto-tuning” option. Activate the “start” button.

The program will begin automatic calibration, which will last 1-3 minutes. Upon completion, go to the “map” tab. The orange line should be in the range of 1-1.4 coefficients.

If the line is above this threshold, it means that the injector nozzles are incorrectly selected and their throughput is underestimated. In this case, you need to drill out the jets or select others. Well, if the curve is below this range, this indicates that the nozzle holes are too large. Here you should choose other jets/nozzles or solder the existing ones and adjust (drill) them to the desired size.

Correct setting of Lovato LPG in Easy Fast

How to set up Lovato 4th generation HBO?

I decided to install gas equipment on my car and contacted a specialized office. They supplied me with Lovato equipment, but they couldn’t set it up correctly. My city is not large and the other companies that I could find did not install and service Lovato.

Main problems:

  • the car barely pulled on the gas
  • gigantic gas consumption
  • Along with gas,
    gasoline was consumed at the same time
  • after installing the gas system, the car started on gasoline with explosions in the exhaust system

After many attempts, I realized that they couldn’t adjust the gas for me like that and I would have to figure it out myself. Hopelessness is the engine of progress, we had to look for options. After googling a little, I found a huge number of manuals, but all of them were in one way or another incomplete and did not reveal the essence of the setup. I had to figure out a lot of things myself.

Generation choice

When choosing a generation of gas equipment for a UAZ loaf, you need to decide on your financial capabilities and take into account what type of fuel distribution system the engine has - carburetor or injection.

The minimum costs will be when installing gas equipment on a UAZ loaf of HBO 2nd generation on a model with a carburetor. The equipment has an electronic reducer; gas is supplied through the operation of an electromagnetic valve. The equipment itself is easier to install, but also less safe and more problematic during the adjustment process.

The maximum return will be from installing a 4th generation LPG on a UAZ loaf, which will pay for itself over a longer period, but the dynamics and power of the vehicle will be preserved. You can perform a more accurate dosage of gas flow. Such equipment interacts with fuel of any quality. The gas mixture is supplied to the injectors separately to each cylinder. Switching the engine power mode is done by the driver without leaving the cab, manually or automatically. There is an indication that shows how much gas is left in the cylinder.

An important thing is the self-diagnosis system on the 4th generation gas equipment, which allows you to monitor the operating status of the equipment and promptly identify possible malfunctions.

There are a lot of manufacturers of gas equipment, so you need to proceed from the car owner’s budget and the qualifications of the craftsmen. The leaders in the production of HBO are Italy and Holland. The most popular among Russian car owners are installations from Italian and Polish manufacturers. More expensive than BRC, OMVL, in some positions cheaper than Lovato, Digitronic, Stag. Good reviews from drivers about gas equipment from Holland Prins. Alpha's domestic equipment meets environmental and safety standards.

For reference. All-wheel drive utility vehicles of the UAZ 452 Bukhanka series began their history in the middle of the last century, replacing the UAZ 450. The UAZ-3303 pickup truck, the UAZ-3741 van, the UAZ-2206 minibus, the UAZ-3962 medical car and the model of the wagon are still in demand among car owners. type UAZ-39094 Farmer. These indices were adopted in the 80s; newer modifications have letter designations.

Propane butane or methane?

Another question arises when altering the fuel system of a car: which gas is better, propane-butane or methane. Propane equipment is often installed on passenger cars mainly because it is lighter and the gas tank takes up less space. As for utility vehicles, this is not significant for them. But the benefits from CNG are much greater:

  1. CNG is cheaper than propane-butane, gasoline or diesel fuel.
  2. The higher octane number of methane significantly extends engine life.
  3. It is more environmentally friendly and behaves better in relation to the engine.

According to the “Classification of Combustible Substances by Sensitivity Level,” methane belongs to safety class 4 (for gasoline and propane-butane this indicator is worse - classes 2 and 3, respectively).

It must be admitted that the equipment for CNG itself is more expensive, and gas stations cannot be found everywhere.

Lovato Easy Fast

Lovato Easy Fast is the official software for setting up Lovato LPG. To run the software, you do not need a license key, and it can work with both an original and a homemade cable. It is strange that the manufacturer does not distribute its product on the official website.

I used Lovato Easy Fast 1.7.4, it was easy to google and download.

Lovato Easy Fast - main menu

Main parameters of the “Configuration” section

Configuration Tab

  • This tab contains the characteristics of your engine and gas system. Make sure all parameters are correct.

Switching

Lovato Easy Fast - “Switching” section

  • Allow injectors to warm up - in this mode, in case of frost, the injectors will first turn on, work for a while, and only then gas will be supplied. This parameter will increase gasoline consumption.
  • Idling Which fuel system will provide idle speed. Feel free to put on the gas.
  • for switching : when decelerating, which corresponds to decreasing pressure on the gas pedal, and when accelerating, which corresponds to increasing pressure on the gas pedal. Most often, switching occurs without these actions, but sometimes in order to switch the car to gas, these conditions must be met.
  • Reducer temperature for switching: Until the reducer warms up to the set temperature, the system will not switch to gas. If the gearbox is in good condition, we set as little as possible.
  • Starting on gas with a warm engine after turning the ignition key, if the engine is warmer than the specified temperature, it will automatically switch to gas.
  • Switching delay when the engine is hot: if the engine is hotter than the gearbox, but not hotter than the starting temperature on gas, then this rule works.
  • Operation at high speeds.
      Gas In this menu you can configure the addition of gasoline when gas injectors cannot cope.
  • Adding gasoline is a more detailed setting of the “Gas” option.
  • Gasoline, everything is simple here, we exceeded the speed, turned off the gas, turned on gasoline.

Setting the sensitivity of the gearbox

This is the last stage of our adjustment. To perform this action, first of all you need to unscrew the sensitivity screw and, after stabilizing the speed, screw it back 1 turn. Next, by sharply pressing the gas pedal, we check our adjustment - the throttle response of the internal combustion engine should be good.

Now we set up the dispenser. Here you will need an assistant who, by pressing the accelerator, will set the engine speed within 3-3.5 thousand per minute.

Setting up the dispenser begins with turning the screw. Having found the threshold point (at which the speed of the internal combustion engine changes), this part is turned back ¾ of a turn. Thus, for a 2-section dispenser, chamber I is adjusted. In order to adjust the second, perform a similar action (in this case, the screw is turned out ¼ turn). The 2nd generation HBO is also adjusted in a similar way.

In gas reducers that have the ability to adjust the first degree, it is necessary to set the pressure at idle speed using an external pressure gauge. Its values should range from 0.39 to 0.42 kgf per square centimeter. After this, the idle speed setting is repeated again (as well as the sensitivity of the gearbox).

How is the final adjustment done on the 2nd generation HBO? The last step involves adjusting the sensitivity screw. What needs to be done with it? To do this, while pressing the accelerator pedal, tighten the sensitivity screw ¼ turn. This operation is repeated until a noticeable drop in speed appears. After this, the sensitivity screw is unscrewed ½ turn. At this stage, the adjustment of gas equipment can be considered complete.

Jet selection

There is a misconception that the jets are located at the end of the hose and are installed in the manifold; in fact, the jets are installed directly into the gas injectors.

Where can I find Lovato LPG jets?

Make sure you have the correct jets selected. Here is a table of diameters, depending on the power of one cylinder.

Power per cylinder, hpDiameter, mm
13-201,6
20-261,8
26-292,0
29-342,2
34-392,4
39-452,6

If necessary, drill out the jets.

Self-tuning

Before tuning, it is recommended to drive a little on gasoline, this is necessary so that the gasoline brains “feel” the normal mode and correct the correction factors.

All self-tuning can do is accurately determine the timing of gas injection at idle. All other engine modes require manual adjustment. It’s a pity, most often gas workers limit themselves to only this mode.

We connect the cable to the car, turn on the Lovato Easy Fast program, initialization occurs, which takes some time. In the lower right corner the cable icon is displayed with a green check mark. From this moment you can start setting up.

Let's start setting up:

  1. Go to the Self-Configuration menu.
  2. Close the gas screw of the gearbox completely and open it a few turns. The gas pressure should be within 1.2
    -
    1.4
    bar (indicator in the program at the top).
  3. Click the auto-tune button.

Self-tuning start button

Self-tuning in progress

During tuning, the engine may stall or stall altogether, which indicates an incorrect injector diameter.

After successful completion of auto-tuning, press the “Gasoline” button (upper right corner), the car switches to gas, compare the “Gas time” and “Gasoline time” indicators, these 2 times should be approximately the same, as a rule, gasoline time is less than gas time by 1- 2 ms. The closer these indicators are, the better the engine will perform at high loads and at idle. If the gas time is too high, it is necessary to drill out the injector jets or increase the gas pressure; if it is too low, then reduce the gas pressure.

Self-configuration completed correctly

When switching from gasoline to gas and back, the engine should run smoothly, this indicates correct self-adjustment of the idle speed.

Installation of gas equipment on UAZ Bukhanka

Before starting installation, perform engine diagnostics. The Bukhanka car owner must be sure that the power plant is operating stably. If the internal combustion engine is not in order, it will be impossible to adjust economical fuel consumption.

It is discussed with the craftsmen where the main components will be located so that they do not interfere with the future operation of the machine. It is also discussed in which places of the Loaf to make the necessary holes in the body. It is believed that when installing gas on a loaf, it is more advisable to use a cylindrical cylinder.

The impressive ground clearance of the UAZ allows it to be placed under the bottom, but more often it is mounted in the cabin under the seats. For a power reserve, you can attach two or three such containers.

Installation of 2nd generation gas equipment

Installation of LPG on a carburetor UAZ loaf of 2nd generation equipment is within the capabilities of one’s own hands. But it’s safer and more correct to do this at a service station. Moreover, for registration with the traffic police you will need documents from a licensed car service center.

The HBO kit includes:

  • gas cylinder;
  • filling valve;
  • gas valve;
  • gas pipelines;
  • reducer-evaporator;
  • gas cleaning filter;
  • clamps and adapters;
  • mixer reducer;
  • gas-air mixture dispenser;
  • gasoline valve;
  • fuel switch.

The algorithm for installing gas equipment on a UAZ is as follows:

  1. The first to install and strengthen the gas tank on which the valve is mounted.
  2. A filling device is fixed in an accessible place, which is connected by a tube to the valve on the cylinder.
  3. A pipeline is laid that will supply gas from the reservoir to the carburetor.
  4. A valve and filter are installed in the pipeline to shut off the gas when the car is stationary or when you need to switch to standard fuel.
  5. Secure the gearbox and connect it to the standard car heater.
  6. Install a fuel metering device.
  7. In the UAZ Bukhanka interior, a fuel switch button is mounted on the driver's panel.

Next, the gas system is adjusted, which includes adjusting the pressure in the 2nd stage and the volume of the gas mixture at idle speed:

  1. The engine is started on gasoline and warmed up to the nominal temperature parameter.
  2. Idle speed is increased to 1000 per minute, producing all the gasoline.
  3. Start on gas and set the speed to 2000 rpm using suction.
  4. By rotating the XX screw, the engine speed is adjusted to the state of maximum stable operation.

The essence of correct settings

The fourth generation of gas brains, unlike all previous ones, uses the native signal from gasoline injectors and adapts it into a signal for gas injectors, taking into account special coefficients that are stored in the fuel map. This allows you to take into account all the individual characteristics of any engines and install LPG on them without much effort. The whole point of good tuning comes down to the fact that you need to force the gasoline brains to work on gas and continue to think that they are running on normal gasoline.

Many people believe that using a fuel gas card you can “strangle” the engine and thereby save fuel, or add gas and make it more powerful. You need to understand one simple connection.

Problems, as with auto-tuning, arise from different adjustments throughout the fuel map. Somewhere the engine overfills, somewhere it underfills, and in the end this results in poor traction, high consumption and the gasoline brain gradually forgets how to work with gasoline correctly and when you switch to it, jerks, failures, and explosions occur in the exhaust system. It follows from this that there is only one correct throttle setting. If you want to tune your car, flash the petrol brain.

Installing LPG on UAZ 452 Bukhanka

UAZ 452 Bukhanka has been popular for several decades among car owners who need large off-road vehicles. The car is perfectly adapted for driving on difficult roads and is one of the affordable options for buyers.

Most drivers of UAZ cars are willing to convert the standard fuel system from gasoline to gas in order to reduce fuel costs.

Installing HBO on a loaf pays off quickly. Already in the first year, gas fuel begins to save money.

Fine tuning(Online tuning)

After successful completion of self-tuning, you can proceed to the precise configuration of the fuel map.

Fuel correction:

Install the ODB adapter in the car's diagnostic socket, connect to it via Bluetooth from your phone using Torque (or a similar program). Display graph information about long-term and short-term correction. The essence of these parameters is to adjust the fuel. If any situation arises when the engine is supplied with a mixture that is too lean or too rich, then the opening time of the injectors is compensated by this coefficient. For example, clogged injectors will make the mixture leaner and the correction factor will increase. As a rule, this parameter cannot go beyond ± 25%. If a mixture problem persists for too long, the short-term correction is included in the long-term correction.

When setting up LPG, we will need to check the fuel correction coefficients for gasoline and gas and “press” the gas correction to the gasoline one in different operating modes.

Setting algorithm:

Setting up is best done with two people. Driver and adjuster. A more or less flat section of the road is selected, on which the same engine speed can be maintained for a long time.

Each cell in the fuel map corresponds to an injector opening time of 20 ms. Each injector is 8-bit, which means it has 256 time levels. 0-minimum value means that the injector is closed, 255 maximum value means that the injector is open full time.

It makes sense to make adjustments only in operating modes; say, if you do not “turn” the engine more than 4500, then there is no point in adjusting the map higher. The setting is carried out in stages, at each stage the engine speed increases by 500 rpm. The car moves for a long time at an adjustable speed.

Let's start setting up:

In the Lovato Easy Fast program, go to the “Configuration” section in the “Map” tab.

  1. Gasoline supply is turned on (using a button in the program)
  2. The driver sets a constant engine speed and precisely maintains it during tuning.
  3. At these revolutions, correction factors are read out via ODB.
  4. The gas is turned on (by button in the program)
  5. The correction factors are read again.
  6. The cell under the point on the fuel map is configured. If the correction factor is too large, the cell value is reduced, if small it is increased. I recommend selecting the entire column and changing it by several units at once. (After highlighting, press the Enter key.)

HBO lovato fuel correction map

After setup, the card is inspected for sudden changes in modes. A well-tuned map is smooth, i.e. neighboring cells do not differ much in value. If there are uneven lunges, I recommend manually “straightening” the area around them.

If everything is configured correctly, you will get minimal gas consumption and maximum thrust.

Online service LOVATO and OMVL gas equipment adjustment of gas equipment from Andrey Petrov (Auto-S Company, Installation and adjustment of gas equipment in Yekaterinburg)

Description

The Internet service https://test.propan96.ru was created to automate the process of setting up the injection map of gas equipment on AEB control units. The LOVATO and OMVL systems are currently supported. More similar systems will be added in the future.

The Internet service allows you to fine -tune the HBO without using diagnostic equipment (OBDII scanner, etc.). For its operation, only 2 files are required, which can be created directly in the LPG setup : a file for a trip on gasoline (20-25 minutes) and a file for a trip on gas (20-25 minutes). The operating algorithm of the Internet service is based on comparing the gasoline injection time in different engine operating modes on gasoline and gas. The program fully uses all the data from the 3D injection map: Engine speed, injection time, manifold vacuum (MAP).

The result of the program is a copy of the table from the HBO diagnostic program, which indicates by what percentage and in which cells you need to change the coefficients for the correct operation of the HBO.

ATTENTION: Before making any changes to the injection map, save the firmware from the block (configuration file) to your computer!!!

Setting up HBO without an ODB adapter

It’s a shame, but it’s not always possible to read the correct values from ODB. Sometimes the adapter is not just not compatible with gasoline brains. Let's consider the option of setting up Lovato HBO, when for some reason it is not possible to read the correction coefficients.

This method is not accurate; you will not be able to set ideal fuel map coefficients, but the adjustment error will be within acceptable limits.

Setting up without ODB is very similar to setting up with an adapter, but in this case, we will not be checking the correction factor, but the gas supply time. This is perhaps the most unstable value and it changes several times per second, one way or another, this is the only thing we can work with now. You need to read the average value of this value, for example, the parameter jumps from 4.5 to 5.0, in this case the average value is 4.75. To correctly adjust the timing of gasoline, it is important to drive on the smoothest possible road, with extremely equal speeds; any deviation is critical.

Let's start setting up without ODB:

  1. Gasoline supply is turned on (using a button in the program)
  2. The driver sets a constant engine speed and precisely maintains it during tuning.
  3. At these speeds, the average value of the gasoline injection time is read from the Lovato Easy Fast program.
  4. The gas is turned on (by button in the program)
  5. The average gasoline injection time is read again.
  6. The cell under the point on the fuel map is configured. If the gasoline injection time when operating on gas is longer than on gasoline, the cell value increases, if less it decreases. I recommend selecting the entire column and changing it by several units at once. (After highlighting, press the Enter key.)
