How to change oil in manual transmission Renault Logan, Sandero, Largus

Oil change intervals

First, let's look at how often the lubricant in Logan transmissions needs to be changed.
In the official regulations, the Renault Logan manufacturer does not indicate the frequency of replacement of lubricating fluid in cars of 2006, 2014 and other years of production. The lubricant is poured into the transmission for the entire service life of the vehicle. When is a lubricant change still required:

  • if the liquid has lost its properties and cannot properly lubricate parts;
  • when vibrations occur in the operation of the transmission;
  • when knocking out the gear shift lever;
  • if there is a burning smell coming from the box.

Unlike an automatic transmission, in which ATF plays the role of a working fluid, in a manual transmission the oil serves to remove heat and reduce wear on rubbing pairs. But even in this mode of operation, irreversible chemical and physical processes occur; the oil is filled with a suspension of wear products from rubbing metal surfaces.

We recommend making the first replacement at 60 thousand km. During the first tens of thousands of kilometers of a vehicle's run, parts are worn in inside the gearbox. After the break-in period, the amount of wear products in the oil decreases, so the interval between subsequent replacements can be increased to 80-100 thousand km.

Topping up for “mechanics”

It should be borne in mind that for “mechanics” it is generally not expected to completely change the oil or top up.
According to the official requirements of the manufacturer, it is poured into the manual transmission for the entire life of the vehicle. However, since none of the foreign automakers for some reason expects that the car will drive for more than 5, and even more so 10 years before overhaul, it is best to add a little of this consumable to the manual transmission. This will not only increase the service life, but will solve some of the problems with gear shifting difficulties. In order to determine how much lubricant is required for Sandero, it is worth checking its quantity inside the gearbox. Before starting work, this can only be done approximately by sticking your finger into the Sandero manual transmission.

Changing the lubricant for a Renault Sandero manual transmission in this case does not involve performing serious work. All you need to do is:

  1. Prepare the required volume (up to 3 liters);
  2. Open the drain hole;
  3. Using a plastic syringe or a transparent hose, pour in the required amount of consumables (you can see the process in more detail using a special video).

It is recommended not to perform the topping process too quickly. After all, the only way to determine what is enough is the oil pouring out of the manual transmission.

Which oil is better to choose for a manual transmission in a Renault Sandero Stepway?

Recommended oil for Renault Logan gearbox
From the factory, oil is poured into the gearbox, which is subsequently recommended for further use. For example, if there is a need to add a substance to the unit.

This mechanical oil has the following properties:

  • increased fluidity at low negative temperatures, which allows for simplified gear shifting in winter;
  • stable viscosity parameters, eliminating the possibility of noise when changing gearshift lever modes;
  • The product contains a formula that allows you to avoid arbitrary shutdown of gears;
  • the oil manufacturer guarantees consumers reliable protection of the mechanical components of the unit from rapid wear;
  • excellent thermal stability of the product to temperature changes;
  • the presence of a complex of additives in the fluid that allows for extreme pressure protection of gear teeth when the unit operates under high load conditions;
  • stability of the lubricant product to oxidation;
  • protection of internal parts of the gearbox from corrosion.

In automatic transmissions, the car manufacturer recommends using Elf Renaultmatic D3 SYN fluid.

The GARAGE NN channel in its video suggests familiarizing yourself with the procedure for changing the lubricant.

First you need to figure out how often the oil in a manual transmission is changed on a Renault Sandero Stepway. The manufacturer claims that the lubricant poured into the gearbox is designed for the entire service life of the vehicle. But experienced owners recommend changing the fluid as needed. Some argue that replacement is required every 80 thousand kilometers or every five years.

The quality of the oil used should be discussed separately. When filling, only all-season oils are used. Moreover, the liquid should be selected based on its viscosity level. Moreover, the viscosity is determined by the markings on the container with the lubricating fluid. The marking looks something like this: 80w-90 (or 80W90, depending on the manufacturer).

  • The first part should be labeled 75w, 80w or 85w. They designate, respectively, the minimum operating temperature of -40, -26 and -12 degrees Celsius. Therefore, it is recommended to fill in oil marked 75w - it is suitable for most regions.
  • The second part should be marked 80, 85 or 90. It is worth remembering that in all three cases the maximum operating temperature is considered to be 35 degrees Celsius. But the viscosity of these oils differs. Liquids marked 90 are considered the best in this regard.

All oils (both transmission and motor) are divided into three main types: synthetic, semi-synthetic and mineral. Synthetic lubricants are considered to be of the highest quality - they are recommended for use in Renault Sandero Stepway. It is recommended to use Elf Tranself NFJ 75w-80 API GL-4 fluid.

Practical advice on choosing oil for Renault Sandero automatic transmission

I am often asked why buy original oil when there are cheap analogues. After 30,000 you still need to change it. This is fundamentally wrong thinking.

Do-it-yourself complete and partial oil change in automatic transmission AL4

The original oil has the properties that are necessary for this automatic transmission. A certain percentage of viscosity helps protect rubbing mechanical parts from early aging in the box. This lubricant protects the machine from overheating and creates optimal pressure. Any other consistency will lead to improper functioning of the machine parts, starting from the creation of pressure. The machine will overheat and the oil will quickly become contaminated.

And in cheap fakes, the proportions are usually not observed, and the liquid is not supplied with the necessary mineral or synthetic elements.

Original oil

The original oil for Renault Sandero is Elf Renaultmatic D3. The liquid is made on a synthetic basis. Helps the automatic transmission to be more resistant to sudden temperature changes and to warm up quickly in severe frosts.

Other positive properties of the original oil for Renault Sandero 1.6:

  • water resistance and anti-corrosion;
  • protection against early aging of components;
  • reduced noise level, increased smoothness of gear shifting.

When changing the fluid, you need to warm up the automatic transmission to 60 degrees Celsius. Maintain the same temperature when checking the level.

Analogs

However, if it is difficult to find original oil in your city, then you can use analogues recommended by the manufacturer to change automatic transmission oil. Any oils that are manufactured according to the Dexron III standard are suitable as similar liquids.

Level control and required volume

If it is necessary to change or add oil in the Renault Logan gearbox, the car owner needs to know how many liters are included in the transmission. The fluid volume in a manual transmission is about 3.5 liters. The amount of lubricant in automatic transmissions is 4 liters.

To check the oil level, do the following:

  1. Warm up the car and place it on a flat horizontal surface.
  2. There is no dipstick for checking the volume in Renault Logan. Diagnostics is carried out through the inspection hole, which is located in the front part of the transmission housing. There is a plastic cover in the hole; it must be wiped with a rag and unscrewed.
  3. You need to look into the hole. If you cannot see the oil level, you should determine it by touch by placing your finger in the hole. The amount of lubricant should be around the bottom edge.

You can learn about checking the volume from the video published by user Roni.

Checking the transmission fluid level in the Renault Logan gearbox is a troublesome but simple procedure, which is usually carried out in an inspection pit or on an overpass. It is important to ensure that the car is positioned strictly horizontally, without distortions, otherwise the lubricant will be underfilled.

Materials for a comprehensive oil change in a Renault Sandero automatic transmission

When checking the level, pay attention to the quality and color of the lubricant. It should not be dark or have metallic impurities. If there is a lot of metal dust or shavings in the ATF, it’s time to change the steel discs or the torque converter pump. But more on that in another article.

So, if the oil has darkened, then it’s time to change it. The materials that will be needed to change the transmission fluid in the Renault Sandero gearbox are as follows:

  • filter No. 310010;
  • pan gasket;
  • seals;
  • gloves;
  • carbocleaner or kerosene for cleaning the tray;
  • wrenches, ratchet heads;
  • lint-free cloth;
  • container for draining lubricant;
  • a five-liter bottle (later you’ll find out what it’s for);

What kind of oil should I use?

On the assembly line, the manufacturer fills the manual transmission with Elf Tranself NFJ 75W-80, which Renault recommends for transmissions of the JXX, TL4 and NDX series.

Renault Logan, Sandero, Logan 2, Lada Largus with 1.4 liter engines were equipped with a jH1 manual transmission, while cars with 1.6 and 1.2 liter engines were equipped with a jH3. Structurally, the units differ in the size of the clutch housing, so this does not affect the choice of gear oil. Less common on cars is the JR5 manual transmission.

How much oil do you need to fill in a Renault Sandero automatic transmission?

First generation BS, 2009-2018

The 1st generation Sandero was based on the B0 platform, borrowed from the 2004 Logan sedan. At the same time, the design of the car was more associated with the Renault Scenic minivan. And yet, when viewed in profile, the familiar silhouette of Logan with its angular doors was recognizable. Compared to the four-door model, the hatchback of the same name had a reduced wheelbase (2591 versus 2630 mm), and the ground clearance was 155 mm, like a sedan. In general, the technical part and body elements of Sandero and Logan were unified by 70%, which made it possible to reduce production costs and ensure mass production. In addition, there were practically no problems with spare parts, because many elements were interchangeable. The basic hatchback was equipped with a 1.4-liter 75-horsepower engine, and the top version was offered with a 1.6-liter engine (84 or 102 hp). Gearboxes - manual or automatic.

Automatic transmission oil: volume – 6-7 liters with a complete change; 3.5-4.0 liters with partial replacement

Second generation 5S, since 2012

The 2nd generation Sandero is designed on a modernized platform of the previous Logan, has a reinforced chassis, a more functional and comfortable interior, and is also equipped with updated engines. Despite a very successful design concept, from an image point of view, the Sandero is still positioned as an ultra-budget foreign car. However, the car stands out for its stylish and original design of the front end, especially compared to the 2007 model. The massive rear still looks impressive, but more neat and presentable. The interior decoration feels like a new level compared to the first Logan, which didn’t even have full-fledged door handles in the cabin. The Sandero II engine range consisted of 1.1 and 1.6 liter petrol engines (75-113 hp).

Replacement process

The process of changing the oil in a manual transmission in a Renault Sandero Stepway is not very difficult, provided that there are no additional problems. And here it is worth considering one important point: if there are lubricant leaks, the origin of which is unknown, a knock is heard in the box, and after maintenance there are problems with gear shifting, you need to contact a specialist. It is not recommended to carry out repairs yourself if you do not have the necessary skills.

First, it is recommended to check the condition of the lubricant in the gearbox. It is necessary to clarify whether new gear oil is required for the Renault Sandero Stepway. The liquid should be level with the lower edge of the filler hole (closed with a plastic screw plug). Be sure to check the condition of the liquid: whether it has stratified (there are denser, viscous fractions in the lower part of the box), how clogged it is, etc.

It is worth mentioning the tools for changing the oil in a manual transmission in Renault Sandero Stepway. And the list here is very small. You need an 8-square wrench to open the drain hole, a screwdriver to remove the crankcase protection, a 4-5 liter container to remove used oil, and a canister of new lubricant (3-3.5 liters is enough).

Regarding safety precautions, everything is simple and clear:

  • The machine must be secured on a level surface. Stoppers are installed under the wheels, the car itself is put into speed and the handbrake is put on. It must be fixed carefully to avoid injuries and other troubles.
  • Before work, it is recommended to warm the oil to a warm state to reduce viscosity (especially important in the cold season). But you should not work with a hot manual transmission, to avoid burns due to hot lubricant getting on the skin or accidentally touching the gearbox housing.
  • It must be remembered that the oil should not enter the body.

And the process of preparing for draining the liquid is as follows:

  • The machine is installed on an overpass or above an inspection hole. It must be fixed according to the principle described above (in the safety regulations).
  • Using a screwdriver, remove the screws holding the crankcase guard in place. Then it is removed to the side until the replacement process is completed.
  • Place a pre-prepared container under the drain hole.
  • Wipe off dust and dirt from the gearbox (in particular, from the filler and drain plugs). During the process, you need to make sure that there are no leaks or damage to the manual transmission.

After completing the described procedures, you can proceed to the actual replacement process.

How to replace it yourself

To change used lubricant yourself, you will need a container for draining, a set of keys, and a hose with a funnel. Changing the automatic transmission oil is carried out according to the instructions:

  1. Warm up the car until the automatic transmission fluid reaches 60 degrees.
  2. Drive onto a pit or lift.
  3. Turn off the engine, set the lever to “P”.
  4. Unscrew the drain plug.

  5. Drain about three liters of waste. Measure the leaked volume (about the same amount will need to be filled).
  6. Tighten the plug.
  7. Find the filler plug (nut) in the engine compartment. Using a funnel and hose, add the required volume of new oil, half a liter more than the amount removed.

Stages of work

Locate the drain hole. It is located to the left of the crankcase, between the engine and the left wheel. Then change the oil using the following algorithm:

  1. Remove the crankcase protection by unscrewing the six bolts with a 10 mm socket wrench.
  2. Clean the box body and drain hole from dirt with a wire brush.
  3. Place a container under the drain hole to collect the transmission fluid, which will immediately pour out after unscrewing the plug.
  4. Carefully unscrew the cap using a square-head screwdriver and collect the waste in a container.
  5. Close the drain hole with a plug, replacing the rubber gasket with a new one.
  6. Pour 3-4 liters of fresh material through the inspection hole using a hose with a funnel attached or a large syringe.

Add lubricant until it begins to flow out of the inspection hole. Then install the plug and return the crankcase protection to its place.

Now you can confidently begin changing the gearbox oil in a Renault Logan. All the nuances of this process were described above. Changing the oil in a Renault Logan 2 engine. There is nothing complicated, so you shouldn’t ask someone else, it will take about 1 hour. It doesn’t take much time to service a Renault Logan gearbox. But it gives you a comfortable, unforgettable ride on your iron friend.

Do-it-yourself oil change in a Renault Sandero automatic transmission

To change the lubricant in the machine, you must first drain the old one. And the fluid change itself takes place in several stages.

Draining old oil from the tank

To change the transmission fluid in a Renault Sandero automatic transmission, drain the old fluid completely. How to do it:

  1. Start the car. Drive it for a drive so that the automatic transmission warms up and the lubricant becomes liquid if you have had the car in the garage for a long time before.
  2. Roll the car into the pit and turn off the engine.
  3. Unscrew the drain plug under the car on the pan of the Renault Sandero automatic transmission.
  4. Place a container under the pouring liquid to drain.
  5. Wait until all the waste is drained. Only after this do you begin to unscrew the bolts that hold the pallet in place, as there may still be residues of waste in it. Drain them into a drainage container.

Now you can proceed to washing the pan.

Washing the tray and removing chips

Wear products from mechanical parts accumulate on the magnets of the automatic transmission pan. In particular, these are metal dust and shavings. Therefore, the pan must not only be cleaned from burning with a carbocleaner, but also cleaned with a brush to remove dust adhering to the magnets.

Remove the old gasket and clean this area. Then degrease. Place a new gasket on the edge of the pan.

Now you can proceed to replacing the filter device.

Replacing the filter

Remove the three bolts that hold the oil filter in place. Remove it and throw it away. I don't recommend rinsing it. Because the felt membrane that is inside wears out and can no longer retain wear products.

Install a new filter. Screw it up. Coat the place where the tray should be attached with silicone. Attach the pan and tighten the bolts. Now you can start filling in new oil.

Filling with new oil

Steps for filling fresh transmission fluid into a Renault Sandero automatic transmission:

  1. If you don’t have a funnel, make a funnel from a liter plastic bottle and insert one end of a hose or rubber tube into it.
  2. Unscrew the filler hole on the Renault Sandero automatic transmission. Insert the other end of the hose into it.
  3. Start adding fresh transmission fluid.
  4. A partial change of lubricant will take about 4 liters.
  5. Then screw in the plug and start the engine.
  6. Warm up the Renault Sandero automatic transmission. Walk through the gears in all modes with the brake pedal held down.
  7. Then take a car ride. Check the level. If necessary, add fresh fluid.

At this point, the partial oil change can be considered complete. If you have driven more than 60,000 kilometers, then you need to do a complete change in the automatic transmission.

Write in the comments, have you done a partial ATF change in a Renault Sandero automatic transmission with your own hands?

What will happen if you don't change?

If the oil has reached the end of its service life, it will not be able to perform its intended functions. This means that the substance is not able to properly lubricate the rubbing components of the unit. This leads to rapid wear of parts.

The first to fail are the bearings, the failure of which can be indicated by symptoms such as noise and hum in the operation of the gearbox. Sometimes sounds appear when you turn on a certain gear. It is also possible for the speeds to switch off spontaneously. If you do not take immediate action to change the oil, the entire gearbox will fail.

Renault Sandero Stepway automatic transmission oil

Renault Sandero Stepway is an SUV based on the Renault Sandero hatchback model, introduced to the general public in 2007.

In 2010, the manufacturer demonstrated the first generation of the Renault Sandero Stepway. Unlike the hatchback, this car has increased ground clearance. So, under load this parameter is 175 millimeters, and without load 195 millimeters.

This is primarily due to the use of other shock absorbers and springs in the suspension design, which, in addition to increasing the ground clearance, also made some improvements to the driving performance of the model.

In addition, the off-road version of Stepway has a modified design, which includes a new front and rear bumper, massive wheel arches, roof rails, and decorative plastic sills.

Two configurations are available for consumers. In the first, the car is equipped with an 8-valve engine with a displacement of 1.6 liters. The maximum output power of this unit is 84 horsepower.

It is equipped with a five-speed manual transmission. The second configuration also uses a 1.6 liter engine, but with 16 valves.
