During the first part of the test drive of the new Kuga, I was tormented by one serious question: how can a mid-size Ford crossover cost 1,500,000 rubles? Yes, here I have a diesel engine, leather interior, navigation, automatic parking system and bi-xenon headlights. But this is, in fact, a Focus with increased ground clearance and increased suspension travel, in which all of the listed options are also present. Is it really possible that an additional 6 cm of ground clearance and all-wheel drive cost more than 500,000 rubles or half the price of a hatchback?

The new Kuga features all-wheel drive via a Dana electromagnetic clutch.
It is worth noting that the new Kuga has a different electromagnetic clutch: instead of the common Haldex, the engineers installed the American Dana with high speed (sensors monitor the situation every 16 ms). The clutch is capable of transferring up to 95% of the torque to the rear wheels.
We were able to test the effectiveness of the Dana electromagnetic clutch in deep snow: when the front axle of the car was thrown out of the track several times straight into a snowdrift, a simple press of the gas pedal and the rear wheels, remaining on a more or less hard surface, pulled the car forward and back into the track, without allowing the Kuga to finally sit on its bottom. However, as soon as you hang up at least one wheel, the car suddenly loses its off-road capabilities. The fact is that the all-wheel drive system does not even have an electronic imitation of differential locks, and all hope lies only in ESP.
The crossover confidently “walks” through snow and deep ruts
There is an opinion that electromagnetic couplings quickly overheat during intensive operation. In the snow, we were unable to disable all-wheel drive by disabling this smart unit, so we continued mercilessly testing the car in sand pits: engine speed at maximum, sharp turns, driving sideways, sudden acceleration and braking. And so on for 2 hours straight. Surprisingly, the electromagnetic clutch did not overheat and disable the rear axle.

When I watch urban crossovers being driven off-road, I always ask a simple question: “Why?” But if we had not gone to play “sand pit generals”, the topic of the suspension, which would be as similar in settings as possible to the suspension from the new Grand C-Max, would have remained unsolved. The fact is that the Kuga performed excellently on a country road. It seems that the worse the coating, the better the chassis handles all the irregularities. Yes, the car goes a little harshly over asphalt potholes and cracks, but as soon as you move onto the ground, everything changes. Now the price of 1,500,000 rubles no longer seems overpriced. The car turned out to be emotional. We couldn't have had as much fun on the Focus.
Getting out into nature is easy
How it works. Having activated the system by pressing one button, you need to slowly drive along parked cars. If there is enough free space between the cars, the system will display a message that a parking space has been detected, and that further action must be taken strictly on the command of the smart Kuga. At this moment, you need to take your hands off the steering wheel, lean back on the comfortable back of your chair and have fun, leaving your feet on the pedals - when the system says “Stop”, you need to stop, and when “Forward”, give the gas.

Parallel parking with Park Assist - 2 minutes 23 seconds
To test the speed of the automatic parking system, I decided to arrange an impromptu battle between Ford Park Assist and a real person, that is, myself: I parked two Kuga cars in the parking lot, leaving enough space between them for a third car (30 centimeters on each side). The artificial intelligence was the first to go into battle, I only obeyed the instructions of the computer. The final parking time was 2 minutes 23 seconds. I then turned off the system and did the same thing in 57 seconds! It would seem that the computer lost completely, but if I had held these competitions not in the morning, but late in the evening and after a hard day at work, my time would not have been so fast. What can we say about those who don’t really like to park in reverse, like beginners and “blonds”. Park Assist itself chooses the trajectory of movement, and the driver does not need to turn naked in different directions, there is no need to even look in the rear-view mirrors - you can completely trust the car.
Self parallel parking - 57 seconds
How does a car drive in real life, that is, on city asphalt, and not on sand pits? Ford Kuga with a 150-horsepower engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission is in no hurry. In order to get acceptable dynamics, you need to constantly press the gas pedal to the floor, even if you don’t like to do this. The fact is that in a quiet driving mode, the engine speed is at the level of 2000 rpm, and if you want to accelerate smoothly by slightly pressing the accelerator, the car will not go faster. You press the pedal a little harder, and at the same time the Kuga “throws off” 1-2 gears, rushing forward with a jerk. It is almost impossible to drive smoothly in this car, just like in a crossover with a 182-horsepower engine.
Another thing is the diesel version of the car with the PowerShift robotic gearbox. Yes, according to the passport, this version of the 140-horsepower crossover drives a little slower than its gasoline counterparts (from 0 to 100 km/h in 11.2 seconds), but the maximum torque of 320 Nm is in the “comfortable ride” zone from 1750 to 2750 rpm . In other words, you need to speed up - the car accelerates in the gear it is currently driving in. No fuss. Very confident acceleration. Another significant argument in favor of a diesel power unit is consumption. We won’t compare dry passport data here, let’s look at the real ones. Two cars, a gasoline 182-horsepower and a diesel 140-horsepower, filled to capacity, spun for half a day along the secondary roads of the Moscow region and through sand pits. By lunchtime this day, the Kuga 1.6 EcoBoost had half a tank of fuel left, and the Kuga TDCi had three quarters left. If we rode like this for 4 days, the savings would be 1 full tank.
Now about the design. Visually, the crossover has become faster: a narrow radiator grille, a corrugated hood, new optics with LED running lights... But not everyone liked these changes - they say “Asian”. What do you think?
