Replenishing the ranks of the Armed Forces with competent specialists is, if not the main task of the Ministry of Defense, then at least the most important. The modern army is high-tech equipment that is used in almost all branches of the military. Management and maintenance require professional operators, programmers, electricians, and mechanics. You can obtain these specialties in civilian life. The task of military registration is to group the contingent not only by health status, but also by acquired military skills.
The military specialty is entered during registration. After documentary confirmation, the specialty number is entered on the military ID. In the event of general mobilization, those liable for military service will be distributed in units, taking into account the military training received.
It should be noted that one of the accounting specialties can be obtained in the process of educational activities or military service.
Article in the military ID of the USSR and the Russian Federation
When passing the military medical commission (military medical commission) at the military registration and enlistment offices, those who have passed it are given digital marks on their military cards indicating the number and letter code.
For example, deciphering the articles in the USSR military ID may indicate the conscript’s full suitability, suitability with restrictions, complete unfitness, limited suitability (NGM - unfit for military service in peacetime), complete unfitness, etc.
GPS is unfit for military service in peacetime.
The number of articles that can be written on a military ID is quite large, here are some of them as an example: 10b, 19b, 14c, 21b, 25c, 42c, 56b, 27b, 29b, as well as many others. But even representatives of the military registration and enlistment office will not always be able to understand what the article on the military ID means.
This knowledge is possessed only by doctors who use a special “Schedule of Diseases” to decipher the entry code under which the medical article is indicated on the military ID.
Military ID
Moreover, the list of diseases in this manual can be constantly changed, supplemented and edited. You can find out all the current diseases for this schedule directly at the military registration and enlistment office.
Decoding the VUS code
Today there is no list of transcripts of the VUS, since this information is secret. Only officers can have the information, so questions about where to look up the data can only be asked at the commissariat, and even then, if you need employment. So, the decryption looks like this:
Numbers from the VUS code | Decoding |
First three digits of the year | Suitability or unsuitability for military service. |
Next three digits | Absence of a position, presence of a position or a specific specialty. |
Letter code character | Belonging to a specific branch of the military. For example, “P” means internal troops, and “A” means ground or coastal navy. |
An example is VUS 999000A, which means that a young man is of limited fitness, but does not have a military specialty.
How to decipher disease codes
Transcript of articles
The article that is written on the military ID consists of two parts: a digital and a letter indicator. To decipher the article, you need to know the following:
- The digital indicator is taken from the “Schedule of Diseases”. It shows the disease number from the given schedule.
- The letter indicator indicates the degree of progression of the disease. Typically, the first letter indicators indicate the most severe cases of the disease and gradually decrease, according to the sequence of letters in the alphabet.
Suitability categories
The fitness categories that are written on military ID cards indicate how suitable a conscript is for military service. Specifically, where, in what troops, and whether a person can serve in military service in general. Categories can be:
- “A” - indicates that the conscript is absolutely healthy and can serve in any branch of the military;
- “A 1” - indicates that the conscript is also fit for service, has previously suffered minor illnesses, and can serve;
- “A 2” - this category says that the conscript has previously suffered either a serious injury or suffered from a serious illness. It can work, but there are limitations;
- “B” - a conscript with this category can serve, but there are some minor restrictions. There are minor health problems;
- “B” - this category means that he has restrictions for military service. During war he can be called up, but in peacetime he cannot be called up. In peacetime, such a citizen can receive a military specialty, but after that he is exempt from service and enlisted in the reserves. He can be called up only during war;
- “G” - such a category on a military ID, says that a person is sick with some disease that can be cured. For this purpose, the conscript is given a deferment from military service. It can range from six months to a year. Extension of the deferment is possible until the age limit for conscription is reached. In this case, a medical examination occurs once a year;
- “D” - this letter states that the conscript is declared absolutely unfit for military service. This category serves as a ban on conscription into the army of one’s country, and a person with such an article is forever exempt from conscription. A personal mark is also placed in his passport, notifying him of his unsuitability for conscription. Having such an article, it becomes impossible to obtain a document for the right to drive a vehicle.

GPS on military ID
The abbreviation GPS, sometimes found on a military ID, indicates that this conscript is unfit for military service in peacetime, but he is limitedly fit for military service in wartime.
GPS on military ID
A conscript who is declared unfit for military service in peacetime is exempt from conscription. He is being enlisted in the aircraft reserve. He is awarded the rank of private. The rank is awarded without serving.
To determine the fitness category of a conscript, a document called the “Schedule of Illnesses” is used. With its help, the fitness category of each citizen is determined during conscription for service in the Armed Forces of his country. This document lists the entire list of diseases that exempt conscripts from conscription into the ranks of the country's armed forces.
What groups is the list divided into?
The list of registration specialties encrypted in the military ID reflects all types of troops and units related to them. Persons with a specialty used in the supply of food and clothing, transport management, railway, water, air, pipeline, have a mark on their military ID.
Citizens engaged in mobilization, registration and conscription in military commissariats, financial support, banking services in military units, psychological and informational and educational work have VUS marks about this.
Command positions can also be determined by numbers. Commanders of units that are engaged in the organization, training, and preparation of junior personnel are coded with the numbers 70 or 01. If the number on the ticket is VUS 70203, then the one in the reserve commanded a mechanized platoon in the army, 010011 - a unit of sappers.
Red military ID - what does it mean?
The list of civilian specialties coded in the document includes:
- conducting sociological work;
- teaching subjects of humanitarian and socio-economic profile;
- legal support for military activities;
- provision of medical care;
- specialties in the repair and operation of various equipment.
The group of combined arms specialties is represented by specific professions. For example, VUS 837 is related to the use of cars, 171 to logging, 203 to rescue work, 200 to search for victims. With VUS number 600, a citizen has skills in working with electronic computer technology.
Various specialties of the staff profile, financial service, communications, and traffic commandant service are also encrypted in the military ID.
A VUS number is also assigned to women serving under a contract or having a medical or legal specialty, or to signalmen. The list of VUS is constantly changing. This depends on the technical equipment of the army, which leads to the emergence of new specialties.
All conscripts receive military ID cards
Disease codes on a military ID
Members of the draft commission write disease codes on the military ID, but not the names of diagnoses. There are also records that provide exemption from serving in the Armed Forces. According to “Appendix No. 1” to the Regulations on Military Medical Examination, the following medical codes and abbreviations can be applied.
The column in the “Schedule of Diseases” should indicate the requirements that citizens must meet for health reasons:
I | This column indicates the requirements that the health status of citizens must meet during the first registration or during conscription. |
II | This category indicates the requirements for conscripted military personnel. |
III | This category applies to citizens who serve under a contract. |
IV | This column indicates citizens who, due to health reasons, are able to serve on submarines and those who are already serving on submarines. |

The fitness categories (A, B, C, D, D), which are indicated on military IDs, have already been described in the heading “Fitness Categories”.
Why are military specialties determined?
In the personal file of a citizen liable for military service, as well as in his military registration document, information about the military service is displayed. A military specialty is determined for each man registered with the military registration and enlistment office who has a certain profession (communications experts or medical workers).
A man can receive VUS in the following cases:
- In the process of completing military service in the ranks of the Russian army;
- Upon completion of training at an educational institution where there is a military department.
In some individual situations, a specialty may be assigned to a conscript when he is assigned to a military unit at a recruiting station. So, for example, if during the process of passing the draft board it is established that the conscript has a driver’s license that allows him to drive various vehicles, then he can be sent to a military unit as a driver. In this case, his documents will indicate the VUS code assigned to him.
The VUS is located on page 11 of the military ID. In addition, the VUS code can be used in the process of keeping records of military personnel in the reserve, as well as when determining the health category and level of specialization in the process of applying a citizen to work. The military department must have information about the exact number of professionals that are in reserve. The military registration and enlistment office needs this data so that in the event of mobilization being announced, it will be possible to quickly assign people to the most suitable branches of the military.
It is also worth noting the fact that upon obtaining a certain specialty, you can count on getting into certain troops. In order to do this, it is enough to undergo special training and some tests. Almost all young men of pre-conscription age and high school students now undergo similar training.
How articles and categories are removed
The deletion of an article on a military ID occurs only if the conscript is cured of an illness. For this to happen, the conscript will need to undergo a second medical examination. If the examination result is positive, the article is removed.
The list of diseases that limit or prohibit military service is constantly being revised. As a result, the categories of articles are also constantly changing. Sometimes there are cases when the removal of the article occurs automatically, regardless of the desire of the conscript.
The list of factors prohibiting military service is constantly being revised.
Sometimes a situation arises that the article under which the conscript had a deferment from conscription into the Armed Forces may prevent him from getting a prestigious job or obtaining a driver’s license. In this case, you should know that it is possible to independently remove or change the article and category that are indicated on the military ID.
Indeed, according to the law, obtaining a driver’s license is prohibited for persons who have serious mental illnesses, diseases associated with the sensory organs and the musculoskeletal system. In all other cases, you can calmly defend your innocence.
Removal of an article
In this case, you need to do the following:
A conscript who independently wishes to undergo a repeat medical examination for the subsequent removal of the article must submit an application to the military registration and enlistment office indicating the requirement to conduct a repeat medical examination.
If he is officially denied this, he has the right to go to court with a request to undergo a second medical commission.
But there is one caveat: if, after undergoing a second medical examination, the conscript is found fit for military service and he has not yet reached the age of 27, he will be legally drafted into the army.
Here is the step-by-step action that needs to be taken to remove the article written on the military ID:
- Personal characteristics are taken
- There is a medical examination.
- With the result of the medical examination, an appeal to the military registration and enlistment office follows, with a demand to remove the article.
If removing the article in this way does not work out, then you should simply replace the old “military” with a new one. After all, the article will not be indicated in the new document. It only indicates the fitness category. In this case, there is a government order that indicates that putting article numbers in this document is not legal.
So, thanks to this order, you can calmly and legally demand a replacement of your military ID.
Replacing the suitability category
The category can also be changed, because it can also be important for possible employment or obtaining a driver’s license. To change a category, you also need to go through a special procedure.
To do this, you need to submit an application to the military registration and enlistment office, which must indicate a request for a repeat medical examination. Receiving positive results gives the right to challenge the fitness category. If you refuse, you also need to go to court.
What types of positions are there?
The list of military specialties includes signalmen, drivers, etc.
Having figured out what the VUS means on a military ID, you need to understand what specialties this or that code denotes, and in general, what specializations there are in the army.
Military occupational codes are six-digit numbers with a letter at the end. The first three digits indicate the branch of the army:
- rifle;
- sniper;
- intelligence service;
- special purpose;
- engineering;
- technical.
So, if the first three digits of the code are 100, these are rifle troops. Reconnaissance and special forces are designated by codes 106 and 107, respectively.
Driving specialties are designated by code 838. Moreover, this specialty includes driving any military equipment, depending on what kind of training a person will undergo in the army.
Military occupational specialties (MSS) and officer professions, as a rule, are assigned to the educational department in which the person was trained. The only exceptions are persons who have undergone training at a military department in a higher educational institution, or citizens with a driver's license. The list of military specialties is large and depends on the type of military in which a person serves.
So, people who have the specialty of a trainer, technical safety engineer, or parachuting instructor can get into command. They can be transferred to command only if the person has demonstrated leadership qualities and has distinguished himself during service.
The list of military specialties includes signalmen, operators, drivers, etc. Special forces usually include people whose profession is related to the Ministry of Emergency Situations or special services. So, it could be a fireman, a diver, an employee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Common medical records in document
2b | Article “2” indicates that, according to the “Schedule of Diseases,” the conscript has pulmonary tuberculosis. Point “b” states that the disease is in the active phase, but there is no release of mycobacteria and no decay of lung tissue |
7b | In earlier entries in military records, article “7b” indicated a moderate mental disorder. But this was the case until 1995. In the modern interpretation, “7b” indicates that the person has the disease “dermatophytosis”. This is a common fungal disease that is completely curable. Upon completion of treatment, such conscripts can be called up for military service. |
20a | Article 20 in the military ID (decoding) It indicates that its owner has mental retardation. Point “a” (Article 20a in the military ID) indicates that the disease is in severe form |
20b | Article 20b on a military ID Again, article 20 indicates that its owner has mental retardation, and paragraph “b” indicates a mild form of the disease |
34b | Decoding of Article 34b in the military ID This category includes diseases of the eyes and adnexa. In particular Art. 34 indicates that the conscript has an eye disease, and more specifically, refractive errors and accommodation disorders. Point “b” indicates that the person has myopia or farsightedness in any eye ranging from 8 to 12 diopters |
14b | This number indicates whether the person has a mental disorder. Point “b” states that the disorder has moderate mental disturbances. In other words, in general, human behavior is quite adequate, only occasionally some deviations are observed |
18b | This article also indicates mental illness in a person. Particularly for personality disorder. Point “b” indicates moderately severe disorders, compensated or with unstable compensation |
29 | Article 29 in the military ID It also applies to eye diseases and diseases of the adnexa. Article 29 indicates that the conscript has a disease of the eyelids, a disease of the lacrimal ducts, and conjunctivitis of the orbits. All points of this article talk about the severity of these diseases, what anatomical changes or disorders occurred as a result of this disease |
14v | The number 14 indicates the presence of a mental disorder. Point “c” states that the disorder has mild short-term manifestations of the disease. In other words, this form of mental disorder is characteristic of those who previously suffered a head injury and had a short-term mental disorder. However, his central nervous system was not affected |
42v | It indicates that the conscript has a circulatory system disease. This article points out rheumatic heart disease and other rheumatic and non-rheumatic heart diseases that are present in a given person. Point “c” indicates that the person has a mild degree of heart failure |
Who is assigned category “B”
Getting category “B” at the military registration and enlistment office is not so easy. To do this, the young person must not only really have serious illnesses and disabilities, but also documented evidence of seeking treatment.
In a number of cases, conscripts who are found to have one or another disease, which theoretically could serve as a reason for restricting their fitness, are sent for additional examination. Moreover, if the disease is detected for the first time, and the conscript has no complaints (including those recorded in the patient’s personal file), he can be sent to serve.
The fitness of conscripts is determined by doctors on the basis of an official document - the Schedule of Diseases. It clearly states all the instructions for the doctor, but the final decision, one way or another, remains with him.
That is, a military doctor may not assign limited fitness, and send the young man to serve under his own responsibility. Most often, doctors resort to this right if there is a suspicion that they are dealing with an evader who is simply trying to simulate some symptoms of illness.
Conclusion
Articles, categories, codes that are written on a military ID indicate how suitable the owner of the military ID is for service in the Armed Forces. In what branches of the military can he serve, what category of fitness does he currently belong to, or are there any restrictions for service for medical reasons.
Some of the categories and articles can be modified for medical reasons, others cannot. Then they become an obstacle to completing military service or obtaining a more prestigious job.
Under no circumstances should you try to bribe the persons who are responsible for removing or changing articles in documents. This will bring to justice not only the person who takes the bribe, but also the person trying to give the bribe will be held accountable.
According to the Criminal Code, officials of military registration and enlistment offices or medical commissions who are involved in extorting money are also held accountable for changing or removing “bad” articles specified in the documents of military personnel.
Military registration specialty (VUS) - list with explanation
A citizen of the Russian Federation who is liable for military service or serving in units of the Russian Armed Forces must have a special identification - a military ID.
In addition to personal data, it has a coded designation of the existing army specialty or VUS number (military specialty).
The VUS code contains letters and numbers; the number can be assigned not only on the basis of the military profession acquired during military service or under a contract, but also on the basis of specialized education received in educational institutions.
Code decoding method
The first digits in the VUS code indicate the military profession:
- 100 – shooter;
- 101 – sniper;
- 106 – military intelligence;
- 998 suitable for military service, but did not undergo it;
- 999 – limited fit for military service, but does not have military training.
The list of VUS is divided into separate chapters. Each chapter has a number that partially or even completely repeats the first code. The following numbers indicate the specific position held by a person in the army. These data provide more comprehensive information about the citizen's military specialty. So, for example:
- 000 - without any position;
- 001 – battery specialist;
- 097 – deputy commander;
- 182 – commander;
- 220 – mechanic who services aircraft jet engines;
- 259 – driver and part-time mechanic;
- 673 – specialist in measuring land and elevation differences on the ground;
- 385 is an expert in demolition work that is carried out under water.
In general, decoding the VUS is a rather complex process. This is due to the fact that a certain combination of numbers denotes a specific military profession. The alphabetic symbol can complement the digital encoding and denotes special characteristics of the service:
- A - ground forces, as well as the coastal Navy;
- B – a specialist who works with equipment for rockets;
- D – representative of the airborne forces;
- K - representative of the composition of warships;
- M - Marines;
- P – internal troops;
- R - Border guards, FSP (border part of the FSB);
- T – military builder;
- E – member of the flight crew;
- C – Ministry of Emergency Situations and rescuers;
- F - Special Forces;
- X - reconnaissance.
Job groups
For VUS, there are certain groups of positions, the division into which is based on knowledge, skills and experience.
Commanders
This includes those with good team management and training skills. The code that corresponds to this group appears for those who have succeeded during the period of service or while studying at the military department. In addition, it can be assigned to people who have a specialty:
- trainer;
- instructor (parachute jumping, tourism, hand-to-hand combat);
- safety engineer;
- airport dispatch service specialist;
- teacher;
- administrative position.
That is, such a position can be given to those who know how to organize and train a group of people in certain skills. To do this, you simply need to know the features of psychology and be able to influence.
Note! Number 034097 indicates the acquired specialty - platoon commander.
Operator
This VUS involves working with a huge amount of equipment that is in service with the army. This, of course, requires specific skills. Namely:
- ability to work with CT;
- programming;
- maintenance and adjustment of equipment;
- setting up industrial equipment.
Accordingly, such an entry in the military ID is received by those who have skills in this type of work. In the event of hostilities, even someone who studied at a university to become a technician will be made an operator of an art installation. Additionally, any operator must have the following qualities: be able to assess the situation, be responsible, and make decisions quickly.
Signalman
This person is responsible for communication between departments. Necessary skills are the ability to work with modern communications: telecode, satellite communications, telephony, telegraph. Required personal qualities:
- excellent memory;
- logical thinking;
- mathematical mind, which will greatly help in working with a coded signal.
Another very important specialty, without which the list would not be complete, is a driver. Such a VUS is often written down for those who have taken driving courses and do not have a higher education. The main tasks are transporting people and cargo.
Note! People with knowledge of tractor technology and experience are considered especially valuable personnel.
You can count on such a record:
- driver;
- driver of self-propelled and motor vehicles;
- skipper.
In some cases, in order to be awarded these specialties, you must have an appropriate diploma of completion of training at a university of the USSR or the Russian Federation.
Special purpose
Certain types of troops require specialized training, and therefore skills. The code designation of highly specialized specialists is:
- rescuer;
- diver;
- law enforcement officer;
- firefighter.
All these people are tagged:
- good health;
- high level of physical fitness;
- psychological resilience.
