Contrary to the regulations: changing the oil in the Renault Duster automatic transmission

Frequency of lubricant changes in the Duster automatic transmission

According to the factory manual, the oil in the Renault Duster automatic transmission does not need to be changed throughout the entire period of operation. The guaranteed mileage is limited to one hundred thousand kilometers. If you plan to use the Renault Duster beyond the specified mileage, the automatic transmission should be serviced periodically. Let's figure out when to change the oil in a Renault Duster automatic transmission to prevent serious damage.

Mechanics recommend sticking to a frequency of sixty thousand kilometers.

Subject to gentle operation . If you adhere to an aggressive driving style or operate the Duster in off-road conditions or in constant traffic jams, you will need to shorten the lubricant change interval.

Characteristic signs indicating the need for an emergency oil change in the Renault Duster automatic transmission:

  • gear shifting is accompanied by a grinding noise;
  • operating the automatic transmission selector is difficult and requires significant physical force;
  • the shift lever cannot be moved;
  • There is a darkening or burnt odor of the lubricant.

There is no point in delaying the replacement of transmission fluid, as it:

  • cools working elements;
  • lubricates rubbing mechanisms;
  • supports resource parts.

conclusions

The easiest and most effective way to check the oil level is to remove and check through the rear transmission plug. The level is determined by the lower gap, and if you unscrew it, you can add oil to the required amount, and the remainder will flow out.

An automatic transmission is a complex and sensitive unit, which quickly fails at the slightest failure to comply with maintenance rules. A partial or complete oil change in a Renault Duster automatic transmission is carried out after a thorough check of the condition of the old fluid.

Choosing oil for Duster automatic transmission

Let's figure out what kind of oil to fill when replacing a Renault Duster automatic transmission. In accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations, lubricant type ELF RENAULTMATIC D3 SYN (DEXRON III standard) should be used.

A complete replacement will require seven liters, and a partial replacement will require 3 to 4.

ELF RENAULTMATIC D3 SYN
The following oil brands can be used as analogue options:

ATF 4HP20 AL4

  • ATF 4HP20 AL4 - manufactured by the French company Mobil, has a characteristic red tint . The main purpose of the lubricant is to use it in a ZF 4HP20 automatic transmission with four gear stages in combination with power units with a volume of more than two liters. In this case, it is also possible to use the lubricant on previous series of automatic transmissions of type DP0 (AL4). They have less torque - 210 N*m, while the ZF 4HP20 has 330 N*m. Automatic transmission DP0 is installed on car models with V1.4 and 1.6 liter internal combustion engines. The brand of oil in question can be used on Renault Duster 1. Accordingly, for gearboxes with a higher load, the developers have taken additional measures for normal operation . They manifested themselves in the introduction of special control electronics.
  • LT 71141 is a semi-synthetic lubricant from the same company as in the previous paragraph . It has a characteristic yellow color. Can be used on Renault Duster models with automatic transmission modifications DP0, DP2 and DP8, that is, for all generations. Due to higher quality components, LT 71141 has better properties.

This manifests itself in less oxidation and the ability to withstand increased loads.

Checking the lubricant level in the Duster automatic transmission

For work you will need to prepare:

  • eight-size hex wrench;
  • funnel;
  • container for receiving waste with a volume of at least a liter.

Checking the oil level in the Renault Duster automatic transmission (according to the factory instructions, this operation should be performed at intervals of 15,000 km):

  1. The transmission fluid is preheated by starting the power plant or driving for ten minutes. The temperature should be between 50 and 80 degrees Celsius . To determine it correctly, you will need to use a car scanner that connects to the diagnostic connector. If the level is checked at an insufficient temperature, excess oil will be observed, and if the temperature is excessive, the automatic transmission will be insufficiently filled.
  2. Next, install the Duster on a horizontal plane and secure it with the hand brake/
  3. The next step is to operate the automatic transmission selector. In this case, you will need to linger in all positions for several seconds, constantly keeping the brake pedal depressed. This will fill the hydraulic transformer and the entire system. Finally, move the lever to neutral (N) and release the brake pedal..

  4. A container for receiving waste is installed under the Renault Duster automatic transmission.
  5. At the bottom of the crankcase there is a level plug that must be unscrewed. An overflow tube is mounted in the opened technological hole. Its upper edge corresponds to the normal oil level. At a normal level of lubricant, it should flow from the tube at a temperature ranging from 35-37 degrees Celsius;

  6. Lubrication is assessed, and if characteristic signs of wear appear, the oil in the Renault Duster automatic transmission is changed.

If there is no oil leakage from the bypass tube after reaching a temperature of sixty degrees Celsius, top up:

  • disconnect the drive cable from the automatic transmission selector;

    Disconnect the drive cable from the selector

  • at the top of the automatic transmission housing, unscrew the plug from the filler hole;

    Filler hole

  • Pour in transmission fluid until a drip leak appears from the bypass tube . If you observe a jet stream, you should wait until the oil drains until droplets form;
  • the condition of the gaskets on the plugs is assessed , and if there is damage, spare parts are installed;
  • screw the control and filler plugs using a force of 35 N*m.

Changing the oil in the Duster automatic transmission

Changing the oil in a Renault Duster automatic transmission with your own hands is done in the following order:

  1. After a short trip, the transmission fluid warms up to sixty degrees Celsius.
  2. The car is installed on a horizontal plane. The automatic transmission selector is switched to “P” mode and the handbrake lever is pulled.

  3. A container is provided for receiving waste liquid. Then the drain plug and the overflow tube are unscrewed one by one using an eight-point hex wrench.

  4. The internal cavity of the gearbox is completely emptied of oil
  5. The bypass tube is mounted in place , withstanding a tightening force of 9 N*m, and the drain plug - 35 N*m;
  6. Unscrewing the plug from the filler neck.

  7. Having installed a funnel in the neck, three and a half liters of new oil are poured in. It is advisable to use a funnel with a filter element whose mesh size is no more than 15/100. This will prevent dirt particles from entering the gearbox.

    Filling with oil

  8. power unit starts until the transmission fluid temperature reaches sixty degrees Celsius.
  9. Without removing the container for receiving the waste and without turning off the engine , the plug is unscrewed from the level control hole.

If there is no drip leak or if less than one hundred grams of oil is drained, the following operations are performed:

  • Renault Duster engine turns off;
  • the inspection hole plug is screwed in;
  • half a liter of transmission fluid is added;
  • then a pause is made until the oil in the automatic transmission cools down to 50 degrees Celsius;
  • the engine starts again to reach the automatic transmission oil temperature of 60 degrees Celsius;
  • Finally, the level is checked again.
  • The measures indicated in the previous paragraph are carried out until the drained volume of lubricant exceeds one hundred grams;
  • The drain and filler plugs are installed in place.

How to change oil correctly?

The oil in the Renault Duster automatic transmission is changed either partially or completely. In the latter case, the liquid is completely drained, the crankcase is washed, and a new compound is poured. A partial option is to add new lubricant and mix it with the old one.

Topping up

If the fluid does not flow out of the hole or is below normal on the dipstick, you need to top up:

  • disconnect the selector drive cable from the automatic transmission;
  • unscrew the filler plug;
  • add ATF until oil starts to rain out of the inspection hole;
  • tighten the plugs of both holes with a force of 35 Nm.

If the liquid starts to flow out in a stream, it means the level is too high. It is necessary to drain the excess until the stream turns into separate drops.

Do not mix liquids from different brands! The lubricant must be of the same chemical composition. It is for this reason that experts advise immediately replacing the ATF completely. The manufacturer himself recommends using ELF RENAILTMATIC D3 SYN. This transmission fluid is selected for DP0 type gearboxes, fits well with seal materials and has a low tendency to foam. A partial replacement will take about 4 liters of this oil.

Complete replacement

On cars with a mileage of more than 100 thousand km, which have not been replaced before, it is better not to carry out the procedure yourself. The fact is that old oil leaves behind waste. During flushing, they can clog the automatic transmission channels. This will damage the gearbox.

Here's how to completely replace ATF on a Renault Duster:

  • the car is placed in the pit;
  • the brand of technical fluid is specified;
  • the dipstick is pulled out of the hole;
  • the engine protection is removed;
  • the oil drain plug is unscrewed;
  • the liquid is drained into a container - at least 10 minutes;
  • the plug is screwed back in;
  • the neck bolt is unscrewed (or the cover - depending on the version of Renault Duster);
  • transmission flushing fluid (of any brand) is refilled;
  • the lid closes;
  • the engine starts for 10 minutes in neutral mode;
  • the flushing composition is drained together with the dirt slag;
  • new ATF is poured.

The first time after replacement, you should not load the car. The speed must be increased and decreased smoothly so that the gearbox mechanisms “get used to” the new lubricant. 7 liters of new oil is approximately how much it will take for a complete replacement.

In order for the machine to last longer, you need to first take care of the lubrication. It is better to trust specialized centers for complete and even partial oil changes. An automatic transmission is a complex and expensive unit; it is not a manual transmission. Incorrect actions here can easily damage the box.

You will need: an 8mm hex wrench, a funnel, a container with a capacity of at least 1 liter for the drained working fluid.

The manufacturer provides for checking the level of working fluid in the automatic transmission every 15 thousand kilometers. Fluid replacement is provided every 60 thousand kilometers. However, the need to replace the fluid may appear earlier if it becomes dirty or a burnt smell appears. In this case, contact the service center, since in addition to replacing the fluid, they will diagnose the gearbox due to the fact that the above signs may indicate its confirmation.

To check the level and top up the working fluid, do the following. 1. Start the engine and warm up the gearbox. The temperature of the fluid in the gearbox should be 50-80 'C. To speed up the warm-up, you can take the car for a short drive. Typically at an ambient temperature of 20°C.

2. Place the vehicle on a level, horizontal surface and apply the parking brake.

3. Pressing the brake pedal and holding it down, alternately move the selector lever to all positions from “P” (parking) to “D” (forward), pausing briefly in each position to fill the torque converter and hydraulic system with fluid. After this, set the selector lever to the “N” (neutral) position. Release the brake pedal.

4. Place a wide container under the gearbox to drain the working fluid.

5. Unscrew the hole plug for monitoring the working fluid level, located in the bottom of the gearbox housing. At a normal level, the working fluid begins to flow out of the hole when the temperature reaches 35-37 'C.

To control the level, a bypass tube B is installed in hole A, the upper edge of which corresponds to the normal level of the working fluid.

6. Assess the condition of the working fluid. If the fluid is dirty or has a burning smell, replace it completely.

The burning smell of the working fluid with the simultaneous presence of foreign particles in it in the form of fragments of friction material indicates the need to repair the gearbox.

7. If the working fluid does not begin to flow out of the control hole when the temperature rises to 60 'C, it is necessary to add it. Disconnect the selector drive cable from the gearbox.

8. Remove the filler plug located in the upper part of the gearbox housing. 9. Fill with hydraulic fluid until it begins to flow out of the inspection hole.

The liquid should flow out of the control hole in separate drops. If it flows out in a continuous stream, drain off the excess until dripping appears.

10. Tighten the plugs of the control and filler holes to a torque of 35 Nm.

Check the condition of the sealing gaskets of the plugs. Replace them if necessary.

To replace the hydraulic fluid, do the following. 1. Warm up the working fluid in the gearbox to an operating temperature of 60 'C, taking a short trip. 2. Place the car on a flat horizontal platform, move the selector lever to the “P” position and brake the car with the parking brake.

3. Unscrew the control plug A of the drain hole and the bypass tube B using an 8-point hexagon wrench B, drain the liquid into a suitable container. 4. Tighten the bypass tube with a torque of 9 Nm and the plug with a torque of 35 Nm. 5. Remove the filler plug. 6. Fill the gearbox with 3.5 liters of new oil recommended by the manufacturer. To prevent dirt from getting into the gearbox, use a funnel with a filter whose mesh size does not exceed 15/100. 7. Run the engine at idle speed and warm up the fluid in the gearbox to an operating temperature of 60 'C. 8. Place the container and, with the engine running, remove the control plug. 9. If the oil does not flow out or the volume of drained oil is less than 0.1 l, do the following: – stop the engine and tighten the plug; – add 0.5 liters of oil; – let the gearbox cool to a temperature of 50 'C; – start the engine at idle speed; – wait until the temperature rises TO (60+1)'C; – place a container under the stopper; – Unscrew the drain plug. 10. Repeat these operations until more than 0.1 liters of oil has been poured into the container. 11. Close the filler and inspection hole plugs and install all the removed parts in the reverse order of removal,
