Today we will talk about changing the oil in an automatic transmission from the French manufacturer al4. In Russia it is also called DP0. According to the manufacturer, the Al4 automatic transmission does not require lubricant replacement. However, I would not trust such loud assurances. It is clear that this is a marketing ploy.
Therefore, when the mileage of a car with an Al4 gearbox reaches 30 thousand kilometers, I advise you to replace the transmission fluid. At this time, you can only do a partial oil change. And I recommend doing a complete one, using the replacement method, after a run of 60,000 kilometers.
Under extreme operating conditions, I recommend reducing the time. Or change it immediately if you experience the following symptoms of oil starvation:
- noise or vibration of the Al4 automatic transmission at intersections, while idle and at idle;
- knocking noises that occur more often than usual;
- overheating of the box, despite the cool season. In summer, the Al4 automatic transmission often overheats and the ECU fails. It is advisable to install an additional cooling radiator in hot regions of Russia.

Maintenance features of the DP0 machine
Representatives of the RENAULT concern have not established mandatory deadlines for replacing transmission fluid in automatic transmissions. It is believed that the degree of aging of the lubricant is controlled automatically by the on-board computer. The manual stipulates the following: if leaks occur, you need to add additional working fluid to achieve the required level. The recommended oil for automatic transmission is DP0 brand Elf RenaultMatic D3. It should be remembered that this brand of lubricant is not compatible with Elf RenaultMatic D2 consumables.
Despite the recommendations given by the RENAULT Laguna dp0 manual, experienced car owners are advised to take into account the special operating conditions of cars on Russian roads in difficult climatic zones. Therefore, replacing ATP transmission oil should be carried out after a mileage of no more than 60 - 80,000 km.
Checking the level
The Al4 automatic transmission, as I already said, does not like oil starvation. Therefore, I recommend checking the lubricant level in the box every 10,000 kilometers. Unfortunately, the machine does not have a probe for easy checking. Therefore, the procedure will proceed as follows:
- Start the engine. Warm up Al4 to 70 degrees Celsius. This is its operating temperature.
- Take the car for a ride and place it on a flat surface.
- Do not turn off the engine. Set the selector lever to “P” mode.
- Wear gloves as you may get burned when the lubricant comes out.
- Get under the car and place a container under the drain hole.
- Unscrew the Al4 drain plug.
- Watch the oil pour out of the hole. If it drips, then the level is normal. If the hole is dry, add lubricant.
- Add grease through the Al4 drain hole under the hood. You will need about a liter.
- Drive the car again and, placing the car on a flat surface, check the level.

Partial oil change: Warm up the engine until the cooling fan turns on. Turn off the engine. - Checking the oil level: 1. Unscrew the filler plug 1 (Fig. 2) 2. Fill in 0.5 liters of oil. 3. Tighten the plug. 4. Warm up the engine until the cooling fan turns on. Important!!! If it is not possible to check the temperature of the automatic transmission oil, the following operations must be performed almost simultaneously... When the cooling fan is turned on for the first time after the start of warming up (the air conditioning must be forcibly turned off), move the automatic transmission selector through all available positions PRND, 3,2, return to P and unscrew plug 1 ( Fig.1) 5. Wait until the excess is drained until the stream of oil turns into droplets. (The absence of a drain indicates an insufficient oil level; it is necessary to eliminate the leaks and repeat the procedure from the beginning.) 6. Tighten the plug. 7. Stop the engine.

What materials do we need to change the Al 4 automatic transmission lubricant:
- original mineral oil based on Dexron III;
- Al4 oil filter under catalog number 144010;
- gasket for the pallet (set number 144002);
- seals for drain and grease plugs. Because they tend to dry out and crack. This will lead to the hole not sealing properly. The oil will drip;
- gloves;
- lint-free cloth;
- container for drainage;
- wrenches and ratchet sockets – sets;
- a five-liter bottle will be needed to change the liquid using the substitution method.

Changing the fluid in an automatic transmission consists of several stages. Each of them will be described in more detail in a block dedicated to one of the process steps.
Draining old oil
Let's start by draining the used fluid from the Al 4 automatic transmission. It is necessary to completely drain all the oil from the automatic transmission so that mixing does not occur.
Procedure steps:
- Start the engine. Take the car for a drive to warm up the automatic transmission.
- When the temperature rises to 70 degrees, stop in a pit or place the car on an overpass.
- Turn off the engine and take the drain container. Wear gloves.
- Unscrew the drain plug and wait until the Al 4 liquid is partially drained.
- After this, unscrew another glass inside the drain hole. Oil will gush out. About three or four liters should pour out.
- When the hole is dry, loosen the bolts on the pan and remove it.
It's time to clean the tray and magnets.
Washing the tray and removing chips
Rinse the Al 4 pan in kerosene or a special liquid that can be found in any auto store. Do not forget to remove the old gasket, and the place where it stood will need to be degreased.

Clean the Al 4 magnets from any metal shavings adhering to them. If these wear debris are not removed, they will quickly clog the new filter device.
After you set the pan to dry, you can proceed to replacing the filter on the Al 4 automatic transmission.
Replacing the filter
The procedure for replacing the filter will be as follows:
- Unscrew the bolts that hold the filter device on the Al 4 automatic transmission.
- Take it off.
- Install a new one.
If the Al 4 gas turbine engine leaks lubricant, then I recommend immediately changing the Teflon o-rings. To do this, you will need to unscrew the rear cover bolts, remove and put back new small and large rings.
Filling with new oil
After you have replaced all the components with new ones, you need to begin installing the parts in the reverse order.
- Place the gasket on the tray and cover it with silicone.
- Press Al4 firmly to the bottom of the automatic transmission and tighten the bolts.
- Change the seal on the Al4 drain plug and tighten it.
- Or remove the battery and stand to get to the filler hole. Or find a long hose and insert the neck of a funnel into it.
- Insert the other end of the hose into the grease fill hole.
- Fill a four-liter canister of lubricant.
- Screw in the drain plug Al4, not forgetting to change the seal on it.
- Start the engine and drive the car for 10 kilometers.
- Stop on a level surface and check the level.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR AL4 automatic transmission OWNERS:
- Warm up the AL4 gearbox before driving . Press the brake pedal, move the automatic transmission control lever from “P” mode to “D” mode, hold for one minute, then switch to “PRND” modes.
- Start moving smoothly, without sudden acceleration. You can begin to actively accelerate after the engine and gearbox have warmed up to operating temperatures.
- Do not allow the car to slip. If you get stuck in snow or mud, ask someone to help pull the car out. Even if you have to pay assistants, it will cost a hundred times less than a possible overhaul of the automatic transmission. This recommendation applies to Peugeot 307 automatic transmission.
- The automatic transmission must have a normal oil level . There is no dipstick in the box. Pay attention to the presence of oil smudges on the body of the automatic transmission (Renault Megane automatic transmission, Renault Megane 2 automatic transmission, etc.).
- If an automatic transmission, for example, the automatic transmission of a Peugeot 308, “falls out” into emergency mode , i.e. forcibly engages third gear and the “PRND” symbol lights up (“S” and “*” flashes) - no need to panic, this does not mean that AL4 is “coming to an end.” This is a signal that the control oil pressure in the automatic transmission is below normal. Therefore, contact the service as soon as possible.
- Check the condition of the engine mounts . Their wear can be indicated by increased vibration and shocks when shifting gears. Change them promptly.
- Monitor the temperature of the engine and gearbox . The air conditioner and coolant radiators must be clean. Wash them once every six months.
- The automatic transmission must have a normal oil level . You can check it in AL4 only at a car service center by following a special procedure; there is no dipstick in the box. Pay attention to the presence of oil smudges on the automatic transmission housing.
- The brand of oil filled into AL4 is only MOBIL ATF LT71141 (for DP0 - ELF RENAULTMATIC D3 SYN).
- Service the gearbox every 20,000 km. Perform a partial oil change in the automatic transmission and computer diagnostics of AL4. In total, the box contains 6.5 liters. oils Due to the design features of the automatic transmission, the oil is not changed completely, but only 3-3.5 liters. Call +7 495 7451002/+7 495 7551002. Why every 20,000 km? After all, the manufacturer claims that the transmission is not serviceable and only after 60,000 km it is necessary to check the ATF level? Firstly, until 2002, according to the manufacturer's regulations, ATF replacement was necessary every 20,000!!!! There were probably reasons for this? It causes healthy bewilderment - what happened to the automatic transmission since 2002 and it suddenly became unserviceable? Secondly, practice shows that the first requests, despite the fact that AL4 goes for 200-250 thousand, already start at 50-60,000 thousand!!!! And regular replacement of ATF allows you to extend the life of the automatic transmission. Although ATF is not a panacea. There are enough factors in this automatic transmission that can affect performance. Thirdly, all recommendations from manufacturers, not only AL4 manufacturers, are designed for ideal operating conditions!!! Russia almost always has extreme operating conditions, which significantly reduces the period for replacing working fluids. If the manufacturer recommends that the unit is not maintenance-free, one can suspect the latter of wanting to make additional profit from the sale of a new unit. Unfortunately, in our opinion, this is a general global trend. And Europe, unfortunately, is ahead of the rest here.

Its first steps are no different from the partial change procedure. Only at the end of the process is the connection to the high pressure washer added. However, if there is no such device, then you can call a partner and take a five-liter bottle. Further actions will be as follows:
- Repeat all the steps described in the paragraphs above up to No. 8 in the “Filling new oil” block.
- Remove the return hose from the radiator pipe.
- Ask your partner to start the car engine.
- Insert the end of the hose into a five-liter bottle.

This way you can completely replace the used fluid with fresh one without using a high-pressure apparatus. And the Al4 automatic transmission will be able to work again without errors.
Do not forget to adapt the machine after each oil change. This will help you avoid many of the vagaries of the box, which sometimes occur due to the fault of an unadapted automatic transmission. Because often owners simply don’t give a damn about “taming” the machine, and then complain that it doesn’t listen to them.

Replacement frequency
According to the Peugeot manufacturer's regulations, oil is filled in the AL4 automatic transmission gearbox for the entire life of the hatchback. But there is one nuance here - the quality of the transmission fluid is determined by a special meter built into the automatic transmission and designed for 6000 hours of operation at a temperature not exceeding 95 degrees. If the car drives in the city in start-stop mode, and the driver prefers an aggressive driving style with sharp braking, it is better to update the transmission fluid every 30,000 km.
Oil contamination can be judged by its color and smell, but there is a problem with checking the quality of the lubricant in the AL4 automatic transmission. There is no special probe in the design of the unit! You can assess the condition of the liquid in 2 ways:
partially drain the waste into a container, check the color;
check the meter readings at a technical center using a diagnostic device that connects to the “Measurement of parameters” menu.
As soon as the sensor capacity (32,958 units in total) runs out, the car goes into emergency mode: the “Snow” and “Sport” sensors start flashing on the dashboard. In this case, the automatic transmission is blocked, and third gear is hydraulically engaged.
