Carbine "Tiger", created on the basis of SV Dragunov

Hunting for a man is not just a hobby, it is a passion that allows you to get the right dose of adrenaline, prove your ability to handle weapons, and get a rare trophy. The effectiveness of hunting depends on the quality of hunting weapons. The domestic Tiger carbine, which is a modernized version of the famous Dragunov sniper rifle, has become an excellent weapon that can kill large or medium-sized animals. In principle, any weapon with a Russian-made rifled barrel for hunting differs from foreign analogues in its simplicity and reliability of design. But most domestic carbines are based on the Kalashnikov assault rifle, proven by time and under extreme combat conditions, with an aiming range of no more than 200 m, and with a long firing range, the Tiger carbine shown in the photo becomes the best option, since with an open sight the hitting range increases up to 300 m.

SVD – basic model

Powerful optics, firing range and zeroing were inherited from the carbine from the famous Dragunov rifle, model 1963. When developing the SVD, the goal was not to create a sniper weapon for its intended purpose, but the design was not completely suitable for shooting offhand. Its main purpose was to conduct targeted long-range fire. However, the combination of two unique technologies makes the design of a rifled carbine, created on the basis of the SVD, a universal means of solving the problems posed to civilian weapons. The photo clearly demonstrates the difference between the design of the carbine and the basic SDV. The shape of the butt has been changed, where a hole has appeared for clasping the hand, the size of the flash suppressor has been reduced, but sniper optics allows for successful hunting at long distances in a variety of circumstances and climatic conditions. With a weapon you can go after large game, such as capercaillie, or medium and large animals, for example, elk or bear. The main advantages of the carbine, according to experienced hunters, are the accuracy of cartridges, ease of use, light weight and reasonable price.

Review of carbine models

The Tiger carbine became widespread and recognized in the 90s of the last century. Its production is carried out at the weapons factory. Modern modifications take into account all reviews and suggestions from domestic hunting enthusiasts. Thus, the original design of the butt, ideal for shooting at sporting targets, was not convenient for the fisherman, the safety frightened off the animal with a loud click, and the cartridges made a clinking sound when walking. The video, which demonstrates the handling of modern modifications, clearly shows the ease of their use in any conditions. A review of the models that are produced at Russian enterprises gives an idea of how optimally a particular model is suitable for the assigned tasks. The photo shows modifications of the carbine for the following cartridges: – Tiger, chambered for 7.62x54; – Tiger-308, chambered for 308; – Tiger-30-06, chambered for 30-06; – Tiger-9, chambered for 9.3x64. The Tiger 9 carbine is heavier; its design had to be slightly modified to accommodate a longer and more powerful cartridge. A rubber butt pad is mounted on the butt for shock absorption, which reduces recoil, and the optimally selected weight of the moving parts of the mechanism does not impair the overall shooting characteristics. Tuning of this modification involves the use of the PSO-1 sight, which can withstand high overloads when fired with a large-caliber cartridge.

Comparison

The SVD uses exclusively the standard 1898 military cartridge of 7.62 caliber. The Tiger, in addition to this, also shoots, depending on the model, with .308 Win and 9 mm cartridges. Due to the Tiger’s purely “civic” nature, he does not have a bayonet-knife rest. Another feature is that the Tiger’s flame arrester is shorter than that of the SVD.

SVD

The SVD is equipped with a magazine with a capacity of 10 rounds, and the Tigers are equipped with both 5 and 10 rounds, depending on the modification. The Tiger also differs from the SVD in the modified shape of the swivel on the barrel. The SVD sighting bar provides a range of up to 1200 m, and the standard Tiger - up to 300 m. There are also differences in the design of the receiver, in the shape and pitch of the rifling.

Due to the processing features, the Tiger barrel has a shorter lifespan than the SVD barrel. There is no marking on the butt of the Tiger, as in the SVD, but there is on the receiver. The manufacturer installs a civilian sight on the Tiger, and a military sight on the SVD.

Characteristics of the carbine

Hunters like modernized rifled weapons for their technical characteristics and modern appearance. A lightweight stock for a standard caliber allows you to get a lightweight version. The folding design reduces the size of the carabiner. It's nice to hold in your hands. The metal elements are made with a matte finish that does not give glare. Chrome plating of the barrel neutralizes the effect of powder gases. Wooden parts made of valuable wood look aesthetically pleasing, and if multi-layer plywood is used for the stock, this gives it special strength. The flash suppressor is responsible for protecting the eyes at dusk, and the safety lever secures the trigger mechanism. If it is too tight, some craftsmen carry out their own tuning using a needle file. The trigger mechanism allows you to fire single shots and put the weapon on safety. At the same time, the price of the carbine is affordable, and the characteristics of the weapon are in no way inferior to foreign models. It should be noted that the technology used to make the Tiger barrel has no analogues. The smoothness of the channel is achieved through double reaming and polishing using the latest electric discharge technology. The cutting of channels inside the trunk also occurs using the innovative method of electrical erosion. As a result, the barrel has 4 grooves, with a stroke length of 240 mm or 320 mm. The length of the standard Tiger is 620 mm, and the short design is made with a barrel length of 530 mm. Legion LLC offers the best samples at the best prices. The versatility of the carbine, according to hunters, also lies in the use of an open sight. In this case, the front sight can be adjusted in two planes. A soft trigger compensates for sighting errors in some cases. Photos of various modifications on the Legion website will allow anyone to choose a design. It should be noted that the orthopedic version of the stock has a cutout for the thumb. And a carbine made of plastic has much less weight than a model with a wooden butt. The weapon can be equipped with magazines that hold 5 – 10 rounds. Unjacketed bullets have good killing characteristics. They are dismembered into separate fragments inside the animal and scatter along their own trajectories, so they often stop the animal in its tracks. The reloading mechanism does not fail, cartridge feeding and cartridge case reflection do not cause misfires. The carabiner works well in all weather conditions. The variety of designs and price ranges will allow every hunting connoisseur to choose his own model, which will become a faithful assistant at any shooting point. A professional review by Legion employees and high-quality photos of various modifications will be a good help in choosing. In this case, the main criterion becomes the type of hunting. For an ambush, one shot is enough. Such guns are lighter and their price is lower. For driven hunting you need a carbine with which you can fire several quick shots. For running hunting, the weight of the weapon is important. Thus, the type of hunt is critical. In Legion it is easy to choose a rifle for yourself. Throw the carbine to your shoulder, measure the butt, look through the scope, these actions will help you make the right choice of your weapon. And the review, photos and reviews of experienced hunters will become the starting point for an informed decision. Because the Tiger carbine is one of the best domestic semi-automatic hunting representatives, which is distinguished by accuracy and accuracy of fire, reliability and unpretentiousness.

Making a barrel

A distinctive feature of SVD rifles and Tiger carbines is the barrel manufacturing technology, which can be called unique. The metal blank, which will become the barrel, is drilled under high-pressure oil, then the resulting channel is double-reamed, and then additional polishing of the inner surface of the barrel is carried out using a high-voltage discharge.

Next comes the turn of electrical erosion. The barrel is in a solution that conducts electricity, and in its channel there is a tool that copies the shape of the rifling, after which, under the influence of current, the channel takes on the exact shape of the tool.

Next comes the turn of the outer surface of the barrel, which is first sent for turning, then heat treatment and, at the very end, the channel is chrome-plated to protect against corrosion.

The channel has 4 grooves inside, their lengths are 240 and 320 mm. The long modification of the Tiger is equipped with a barrel length of 620 mm, the short one – 530 mm. The barrel life is officially estimated at 6000 shots.

Carbine modifications

According to the legislation of some countries, including the USA, France and England, the import of weapons that have an external resemblance to military weapons is prohibited.
Therefore, when at the end of the last century the question of lifting restrictions on the export of Russian sporting and hunting weapons was once again raised, a new version of the “Tiger” was prepared. As a result, it had to be carefully modified. Manufacturers from Izhevsk took into account the peculiarities of some foreign legislation and complaints from domestic consumers, creating a new modification - the Tiger-1 carbine, which now has universal side mounts, “consonant” with most hunting scopes. A muzzle flash suppressor was added, which significantly reduced recoil. In addition, the butt has been slightly modified, receiving a pistol-type handle, and the possibilities of shifting the front sight during shooting have expanded. As a result, the Tiger carbine began to be produced in four modifications, depending on the cartridge. This is a self-loading hunting rifle for .308Win, .30-06Sprg, 9.3x64 bullets. But the most popular today is the Tiger carbine with the .7.62x54R cartridge.

Unlike the basic model, this modification is equipped with a non-removable flame arrester with an internal cone. In addition, it does not have a regulator, which is usually installed on the gas pipe.

Cleaning and Lubrication

Cleaning and Lubrication

42. Clean the rifle in the following order.
1) Prepare materials for cleaning and lubrication.

2) Disassemble the rifle.

3) Inspect the accessory as specified in Art. 68, and prepare it for use during cleaning (Fig. 44).

4) Clean the bore.

Place the rifle in the cutouts of a table for cleaning weapons or on a regular table, and if there is no table, place the rifle on a clean mat.

To clean the bore with liquid gun lubricant, it is necessary to fold the tow in the form of a figure 8, place it on the end of the wiper with a figure-of-eight crosshair, and lay the tow fibers along the wiper rod; in this case, the ends of the tow should be shorter than the rubbing rod, and the thickness of the layer should be such that the rubbing with tow should be introduced into the barrel bore with a slight hand effort; pour a little liquid gun lubricant onto the tow and lightly crush the tow with your fingers. Insert a ramrod with rubbing and tow into the bore and attach the cover of the canister to the flash suppressor. Holding the rifle with one hand and holding the pencil case with the other, smoothly, without bending the ramrod, move it along the entire length of the barrel several times. Take out the cleaning rod, change the tow, soak it with liquid gun lubricant and clean the bore several times in the same order. After this, thoroughly wipe the cleaning rod and wipe the bore with clean, dry tow, and then with a clean rag. Inspect the rag and, if there are visible traces of soot (blackness), rust or dirt on it, continue cleaning the barrel bore, and then wipe again with dry tow and rags. If, after wiping, the rag comes out of the barrel bore clean, that is, without blackness from powder soot or yellow color from rust, carefully inspect the bore of the barrel into the light from the muzzle and from the chamber side, slowly turning the barrel in your hands. In this case, pay special attention to the corners of the rifling and check whether there is any carbon deposits left in them.

Accessories prepared for cleaning:

1

- ramrod;
2
- rubbing;
3
— muzzle pad (pencil case cover);
4
- pencil case;
5
- screwdriver

Clean the barrel bore with the RFS solution using a brush soaked in the solution, then wipe the barrel bore with tow. Continue cleaning with the RChS solution until the carbon deposits are completely removed, until a brush or tow moistened with the solution comes out of the barrel bore without signs of carbon deposits. After this, wipe the bore with dry tow or a rag. The next day, check the quality of the cleaning performed and, if carbon deposits are found on it when wiping the barrel bore with a clean rag, clean again in the same order.

After cleaning the rifled part of the barrel bore, clean the chamber and flash suppressor in the same order.

Note

. If during cleaning the cleaning rod gets stuck in the barrel bore, you need to inject a little heated lubricant into the bore and after a few minutes try to remove the cleaning rod. If the cleaning rod cannot be removed, send the rifle to a repair shop.

5) Clean the gas chamber. After separating the gas tube, rinse the gas chamber with liquid gun lubricant or RFS solution and clean it with a screwdriver and a wooden stick. After cleaning with the RFS solution, wipe the gas chamber dry, wipe it again with a rag and inspect the barrel bore so that there are no foreign objects left in it, and wipe the outside of the barrel with a rag.

6) Clean the receiver, bolt frame, bolt, gas tube, gas piston with a rag soaked in liquid gun lubricant or RFC solution, then wipe dry. If liquid gun lubricant is used for cleaning after shooting, cover the gas piston, gas tube, as well as the cylindrical cutouts of the bolt with lubricant or wrap them for 3–5 minutes with a rag moistened with lubricant, after which remove the hardened powder carbon deposits with a stick, and then remove the gas piston , wipe the gas tube and shutter dry.

7) Wipe the remaining metal parts dry with a rag; If parts are heavily soiled, clean them with liquid gun lubricant and wipe dry.

8) Wipe the wooden parts with a dry cloth.

43. The sniper reports to the squad commander about the completion of cleaning the rifle; then, with the permission of the squad commander, the rifle is lubricated and assembled.

44. Lubricate the rifle in the following order.

1) Lubricate the bore. Screw the wiper onto the cleaning rod and place a rag soaked in lubricant on it. Introduce the rub into the bore from the muzzle and smoothly move it two or three times along the entire length of the barrel to evenly cover the bore with a thin layer of lubricant. Lubricate the chamber.

2) Coat all other metal parts and mechanisms of the rifle with an oiled rag with a thin layer of Grease. Excessive lubrication will cause parts to become dirty and may cause delays in firing.

Do not lubricate wooden parts.

45. Wipe the outer surfaces of the optical sight with a clean rag. Shine the cap of the reticle illumination device and wipe the battery, housing and cap. If the surface of the objective lenses and eyepiece is dirty, wipe them with a cloth, making circular movements, starting from the middle. Lenses and glass are not allowed to be wiped with a rag that was used to wipe other parts of the sight, lubricated or touched with fingers.

46. After lubrication is complete, assemble the rifle, check the operation of its parts and mechanisms, clean and lubricate the magazines and accessories, and then show the rifle and optical sight to the squad leader.

47. In the cold season, at a temperature of + 5 °C and below, lubricate the rifle only with liquid gun lubricant. When switching from one lubricant to another, you must carefully remove the old lubricant from all parts of the rifle.

To remove grease, it is necessary to completely disassemble the rifle and wash all metal parts in liquid gun lubricant and wipe with a clean rag.

48. Clean a rifle brought from a frost into a warm room after 10–20 minutes (after it has sweated). It is recommended to wipe the outer surfaces of the rifle with a rag soaked in liquid gun lubricant before entering a warm room.

49. A rifle that is handed over to a warehouse for long-term storage in a standard closure should be lubricated with liquid gun lubricant, wrapped in one layer of inhibitory paper and then in one layer of waxed paper. The optical sight cannot be preserved with inhibited paper.

Modifications and characteristics

There are several modifications, primarily differing in the cartridges used. The Tiger carbine can also be equipped with various stocks and flash suppressors.

When operating and shooting, it is important to use the cartridges provided by the manufacturer.

See the tables below for more details.

Reviews

First of all, experienced hunters recommend choosing a Tiger with a wooden butt, since a plastic one freezes and gets your hands cold in the cold; however, there are supporters of plastic who claim that wood swells from dampness.

The disadvantages of hunting are unnecessary sounds that can scare away the animal. They are often emitted by cartridges in the magazine while the hunter is moving, which can be solved by replacing the magazine with a sample from an SVD rifle if you have a 7.62x54 caliber. Also, the fuse clicks loudly when removed, which can be solved by putting a polyethylene ring on it and moving the lever away from the receiver.

It is recommended to use light bullets weighing 13.2 grams, since heavier ones fly along a steep trajectory, making it difficult to aim.

A nice feature is the trigger, which is light and smooth - will undoubtedly please inexperienced owners trying to get used to the weapon.
