UAZ 220695 04 loaf: technical characteristics, fuel consumption rate

Non-staling “loaf” in the “9-seater minibus” version

UAZ-220695-04 is a minibus of category B. This version of the famous Ulyanovsk “loaf” is a special all-terrain passenger vehicle designed for transporting passengers, with a carriage-type body, inside of which there is a 2-seater cabin and an 8-seater salon (total 9 passenger seats). The UAZ-2206 series of minibuses (with various versions of the passenger compartment and number of seats) has been produced by the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant from 1985 to the present day.

A little history

In the world, perhaps, there is not a family of cars that have been produced virtually unchanged in their appearance for sixty years. The secret of such rare longevity is the unsurpassed cross-country ability of these cars, which borders on permissiveness. And also, of course, the affordable price of the car.

Due to the specific shape of the body, these cars received the popular nickname “loaf” even in the first years of their production. When it was decided to begin mass production of a delivery van and an ambulance, UAZ did not even have its own design department, and several structures took part in the development of this vehicle family. The appearance was developed by NAMI specialists under the leadership of Yuri Dolmatovsky.

The original body version, with a “humpbacked roof” and a flat windshield, was rejected. Such a machine did not include four stretchers, and this turned out to be one of the fundamental requirements of the customer. The project had to be reworked, taking into account one more instruction - to use the existing chassis of the GAZ-69 car.

To install a mono-volume body on it, the frame was increased and other springs were installed. We also designed a new steering gear - for a car with a cabover layout it should be completely different. The first UAZ-450 “loaves” entered the assembly line in 1958. Interestingly, these first cars did not have a side door for the passenger compartment. There were only rear hinged doors. The additional right door appeared only eight years later, when the modernized version, the UAZ-452, was launched into production.

The more than time-tested “loaf” is still in demand among rural owners, foresters, and fishermen and hunters. In the off-road conditions of many regions of the Russian outback, it is still indispensable.

Basic data

The technical properties of the UAZ-452 “Loaf” make it easy to drive on virtually any road. The developers were able to achieve unique cross-country ability for this vehicle not only thanks to the use of all-wheel drive in its design, but also due to its universal dimensions. The model is widely used in various industries and areas: from transporting people and cargo to working as a cash-in-transit armored vehicle.

The developers of the Ulyanovsk Machine-Building Plant constantly “conjured”, modifying the UAZ-452. As a result, a huge number of experimental models were created on its basis. Among them, UAZs with caterpillar tracks, mini-tractors and cars capable of driving on rails gained the greatest popularity. But, it should be seen, serial production of these copies was never started.

Design

Externally, the UAZ-220695-04 is no different from other cars of this family. Frame structure, all-metal body, carriage layout, round headlights.

The dependent suspensions are equipped with packages with short springs. Each of them contains thirteen sheets. The springs are rigid, but very energy-intensive. The motor, as in all “loaves”, is located inside the cabin: remove the cover and repair it calmly. Neither rain nor snow is scary. This point is important somewhere in Siberia or the Far North.

In a UAZ minibus, the cabin is not separated from the passenger compartment by a partition. The number of seats may vary, as well as their location. In the UAZ-220695-04 model, there are eight seats in the passenger compartment of the bus (plus two seats in the cabin, including the driver).

One three-seater (triple) seat is located rearward, with its back to the driver and passenger seats, along the imaginary partition of the cabin. They don't have seat belts. The second row contains one single and one double (double) seats, with lap inertia seat belts. The two single seats in the third row, near the rear hinged doors, are also equipped with lap inertia seat belts.

In addition, an easily removable table can be installed in the passenger compartment. Getting into the minibus is convenient: its side door is equipped with a handle and stationary steps. The rear doorway, with double hinged doors, is equipped with a folding step. When open, swing doors can be secured with special locks.

And in its modern design, the UAZ minibus is not comfortable and, of course, inferior in this sense to modern cars of this class. But this durable and unpretentious car will go where others will be powerless.

In addition to the removable table, the 9-seater minibus is equipped with dermantine soft door upholstery, three lampshades (1 in the cabin and 2 in the cabin).

Engine

The power unit of the UAZ-220695-04 is the ZMZ-40911.10 four-cylinder in-line petrol engine. Its displacement is 2693 cm3, and its rated power is 112.2 horsepower (85.5 kW) at 4250 rpm. Maximum torque – 198 N*m, or 20.2 kgf*m. The engine power supply system is with forced fuel supply. The lubrication system is combined, under pressure and splashing. Crankcase ventilation is closed. The cooling system is liquid, closed, with forced circulation. The number of valves per cylinder is four.

Some other technical parameters of the motor:

  • Cylinder diameter – 95.5 mm, piston stroke – 94 mm.
  • Compression ratio – 9.
  • The minimum crankshaft rotation speed in idle mode is 800-900 rpm.
  • Fuel consumption – 11.5 liters of gasoline per 100 km at a speed of 80 km/h; 13.5 l per 100 km at a speed of 90 km/h. Fuel consumption in the combined cycle is 15.5 liters per 100 km.
  • The operating order of the cylinders is: 1-3-4-2.
  • Maximum speed – 127 km/h.
  • Fuel - AI-92, 95, 98.
  • The volume of fuel tanks is 77 liters (main 50 l and additional 27 l).
  • The engine mount is four-point.

The UAZ-220695-04 engine is weaker than the Patriot one (112 hp versus 135 hp), but there is no reason to regret it - the “loaf” minibus is not capable of fast or dynamic movement.

UAZ-452 (Loaf): fuel consumption data based on reviews

One of the most popular off-road utility vehicles, the UAZ-452, nicknamed Loaf, appeared back in 1966. It received different nicknames, depending on its modifications - Tablet, Pill. According to the body concept, this is a cargo-passenger minibus. For modern requirements, the UAZ Bukhanka has high fuel consumption per 100 km, but this is paid off by other advantages of the car:

  1. all-wheel drive and ground clearance providing increased cross-country ability;
  2. reliability of all components and systems;
  3. wide choice of modifications;
  4. maintainability;
  5. affordable price.

Transmission

The transmission of the UAZ-220695-04 vehicle consists of the following elements: clutch, gearbox, transfer case, cardan transmission, drive axles.

Clutch - manufactured by ZMZ, diaphragm, dry friction, with torsional vibration damper. The clutch mechanism is bolted to the engine flywheel, balanced together with the crankshaft, and its position after balancing is marked on the housing and flywheel with an “O” sign.

The gearbox is a five-speed manual, currently sourced from Chinese manufacturer BAIC. The quality of work of this “mechanics” often causes complaints from owners and drivers of new “loaf” minibuses. Previously, minibuses of the UAZ-2206 family were equipped with a domestic mechanical four-speed ADS gearbox, equipped with inertial-type synchronizers.

The transfer case is two-stage, with the function of disabling the front axle drive. The transfer case distributes torque between the two drive axles of the machine. Also, an additional reduction gear in the transfer case provides, if necessary, an increase in traction on the drive wheels and doubles the gear range. Gear ratios – direct transmission: 1.00; reduction gear: 1.94.

The cardan transmission of the UAZ minibus is an open type and consists of two shafts - front and rear. Each shaft has two universal joints with a cross on needle bearings. The driveshaft designs are the same. The UAZ-220695-04 minibus is equipped with single-stage axles with a crankcase detachable in a vertical plane. The front axle is equipped with a device for disabling the wheel drive. The final drive ratio is 4.625. The axle differential is conical, with 4 satellites. The front axle steering knuckle joints are ball joints of equal angular velocity.

Types and design features of UAZ gas tanks

Gas tanks used in cars of the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant can be divided into several types:

  • Right and left tanks of cars with a carburetor engine without a fuel transfer system;
  • Main (right) tanks of cars with a carburetor engine and a fuel transfer system;
  • Additional (left) tanks for cars with a carburetor engine and a fuel transfer system;
  • Main (right) tanks of injection models with a fuel transfer system;
  • Additional (left) tanks for injection models with a fuel transfer system.

Structurally, all these tanks are different, due to the functions assigned to them.

The tanks of carburetor UAZs without a fuel pumping system are most simply designed. Each tank is a container welded from stamped steel halves and end walls, with auxiliary components located on the upper and lower walls. To protect against corrosion, the inside of the tanks has a special polymer coating; the outside is usually painted black. One or more dampers are usually located inside the container. Each tank is equipped with a filler neck with a retractable elbow (for the convenience of filling fuel not with a gun, but from a canister or other container) and a threaded plug, fittings for connecting fuel lines, holes for installing fuel level sensors and drain plugs. The tank may also have brackets, mounting lugs, and other components.

Tanks with a fuel transfer system are somewhat more complicated. A so-called fuel module is installed in the main tank, which combines the main fuel pump (submersible type), a jet transfer pump and a pressure regulator. With the help of the main pump, fuel is supplied through the filter to the carburetor or ramp, and with the help of a jet pump, fuel is pumped from the additional tank to the main one. The jet pump operates on the principle of a spray: it consists of two tubes - external and internal; fuel from the return line enters the tank through the external tube, and the internal tube is connected to the fuel supply hose from the additional tank. When fuel flows out of the outer tube, a vacuum occurs in the inner tube, due to which fuel is “sucked in” from the additional tank - this is how gasoline gradually flows from one tank to another.

Suspension UAZ-220695-04

The minibus suspension includes four longitudinal semi-elliptical springs, with anti-roll bar in the front suspension; rear springs - with suspension. The springs work together with 4 double-acting telescopic hydraulic shock absorbers.

The spring consists of thirteen leaves. The length of the straightened spring is 1239±3 mm. It is attached to the frame in supports, based on rubber pads. The front and rear edges of the springs are identical in design, so the installation of the spring on the frame does not depend on the location of the ends.

Shock absorbers on the UAZ-220695-04 are of a telescopic type, consisting of a working cylinder and assemblies: a rod with a piston assembly, a compression valve and a reservoir assembly. With their upper lugs, which are connected to the rod, the shock absorbers are attached to the frame bracket, and with their lower lugs, connected to the reservoir, to the vehicle axles.

Previously, the front and rear shock absorbers of the UAZ-2206 were identical in design and interchangeable with each other. Now on the UAZ-220695-04 the front shock absorbers are hydropneumatic, and the rear shock absorbers are hydraulic.

Steering, brakes and wheels

The type of steering mechanism UAZ-220695-04 is “screw - ball nut-rack - sector with hydraulic power steering”. The steering gear ratio is 17.3.

The car's braking system is dual-circuit, with a vacuum booster, drum type at the rear and disc brakes at the front. Parking brake – drum, transmission. On modern UAZ-220695-04, an anti-lock braking system (ABS) is available as standard.

UAZ-220695-04 wheels are disc, steel, stamped, with a deep one-piece rim. They are equipped with 16-inch pneumatic tires, with a universal or deep tread, all-terrain. Previously, tires on the UAZ-2206 were installed with tube, diagonal or radial; Currently, only tubeless radial ones, size 225/75R16, are installed on the UAZ-220695-04.

Cabin and passenger compartment of UAZ-220695-04

New UAZ minibuses of this model are produced with a single ignition key and new door handles. But central locking in Ulyanovsk has not yet matured, as have air conditioning and airbags. Although in such an ascetic retro car interior their absence is taken for granted. The driver's seat of the UAZ-220695-04 is still a bit cramped. The left elbow rests against the door, and the “block” of the engine compartment rises to the right. Large diameter steering wheel; The steering column is not adjustable in any way. Despite new seats and some changes to the instrument panel, time truly has no power over this interior.

The seats of the latest version of the minibus, which have headrests and longitudinal adjustment (there are 4 positions for the driver's seat), are quite comfortable, especially compared to the previous ones. Now they are covered with practical fabric and are very durable. Electrically heated front seats are available as an additional option.

Reviews from owners and drivers

When traveling on the highway, the “loaf” minibus is not very comfortable to drive and “fidgets.” The steering wheel “walks”, the responses to steering are with pauses. At speeds above 90 km/h, the car expands and behaves in such a way that the instinct of self-preservation forces you to slow down. And there’s even less desire to accelerate to the mythical “maximum speed” of 127 km/h.

But the energy intensity of the chassis is simply fantastic. It is not necessary to go around potholes, pits, or potholes. It is unlikely that you will find another car that drives along a broken road with such equanimity. This is where the native element of the “loaf” is! Off the asphalt, the car is all-passable. Thanks to its miniscule overhangs and enormous suspension travel, it overcomes most obstacles simply in rear-wheel drive. You only need to connect the front axle and downshift in very dark places, and you practically never have to use the forced locking of the rear cross-axle differential (included in standard equipment) - this is not necessary.

In addition to impeccable cross-country ability, the list of advantages of the model includes a strong and durable frame structure; extremely reliable rear suspension, unlike multi-link types; successful weight distribution, due to which the front part of the car does not fall into the mud or sink into it. When driving uphill, the UAZ minibus is ahead of ordinary cars, even those with more power.

And, of course, one cannot fail to mention the affordable cost of the car: its price is much lower than that of other SUVs. Therefore, despite all the archaic nature of the car; not always high-quality assembly and other shortcomings, one can only be happy for the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant. Which survived all the hardships of the transition period, withstands modern legislation and continues to provide the country with the necessary products.

Reviews from UAZ-452 owners

Owners of the UAZ Bukhanka car understand that this car is not suitable for everyday driving - it is an SUV in which you can go hunting, fishing, in the fields or mountains. In this case, comfort is sacrificed for the cross-country ability and spaciousness of the car. Off-road driving requires increased fuel consumption, but the car can easily drive along a road that is not cleared of snow, mud, a forest road or a mountain serpentine road.

UAZ-452

  • Anatoly, Krasnodar region. I have an old UAZ-452 made in 1982, repeatedly repaired and overhauled - a real workhorse with a 2.4 engine for 98 horses. An excellent option for transporting goods on any road or off-road. I repair and maintain the car myself, store it in the garage, fill up the AI-92 with a consumption of about 16 liters, I try not to go on the highway - it’s expensive.
  • Nikolay, Yaroslavl. I bought a UAZ-452 for fishing trips, the 2.4 engine is an excellent option for driving on any road, since the all-wheel drive transmission is clearly configured for traction from the very bottom. The frame design is a plus, as is the durable metal body. When driving in the city, it consumes about 15 liters of 92, and on light off-road conditions the figure is similar.
  • Sergey, Belgorod. I have been working on an ambulance UAZ-452 for 12 years. For our roads, I think it’s the best option, despite some lack of comfort. I drive 70-80 thousand km a year and do the repairs myself. The 2.4 engine pulls well and is easy to repair with straight hands. AI-92 gasoline consumption is 13-16 liters per hundred, depending on the time of year and the quality of the road.
  • Valery, Chernigov. I am engaged in private business, delivering food to surrounding villages. For this I use a UAZ-452 with a 2.7 engine with 112 horsepower and a carburetor. The car regularly brings me profit, I can deliver the goods at any time of the year and in any weather. Spare parts are available and inexpensive, the car consumes on average about 15 liters per 100 km, but I load it to the very ceiling. I'm considering installing gas.

UAZ-2206

  • Andrey, Moscow region. For the money, a very good UAZ-2206 minibus with a 2.7 engine and all-wheel drive. I have driven more than 180 thousand km since 2002, without major repairs, but I make sure that it is in good technical condition. I expect to travel up to the passport 300 thousand km without major repairs. Excellent cross-country ability is a huge plus, AI-92 gasoline consumption is from 13 to 15 liters per hundred.
  • Oleg, Novosibirsk. I have a UAZ-2206 in the classic version with a 2.4 engine with 98 horsepower, running AI-92. The car is very reliable, behaves well off-road, the gearbox and suspension are adapted to get you out of any trouble. There are complaints about comfort, but this is the weak point of all modifications of this model. I rebuilt the interior for 13 seats so that a group could go fishing and hunting. Consumption is no more than 14 liters per 100 kilometers.
  • Svyatoslav, Pskov. My UAZ-2206 with a 2.7 engine is a universal car. I work at an enterprise, during working hours I transport cargo - air conditioners, refrigerators, other household equipment, and in the evening - people to their homes. The car will go everywhere, no matter what troubles it has been in - mud, ice, deep snow, it can handle everything. Another plus is the simplicity of design and maintainability. Fuel consumption is 13-14 liters per hundred.
  • Denis, Khanty-Mansiysk. For our latitudes, the UAZ-2206 is the best option in terms of cross-country ability, reliability, and value for money. High ground clearance makes it relatively easy to move through deep snow. The fuel consumption rate of the 2.7 engine is 14-15 liters.

UAZ-3741

  • Bogdan, Belgorod region. I bought a car in 2012 with a mileage of 150 thousand km, drove another 100 thousand km, and will soon be doing an overhaul for the 2.4-liter engine. Interestingly, consumption remains stable, around 16 liters per hundred. There are no complaints about cross-country ability and reliability. Comfort and handling are mediocre.
  • Vasily, Magnitogorsk. I have a modification of a van with 2 seats with a large cargo compartment. For cargo transportation, it is a very good option; the vehicle is spacious and durable due to the all-metal van and frame structure. The car easily overcomes off-road conditions, is reliable and repairable. Fuel consumption in a circle is 15 liters AI-92.
  • Gennady, St. Petersburg. My all-metal van, model UAZ-3741, is a quite decent car. All-wheel drive and ground clearance guarantee comfortable off-road driving - in deep snow or mud. The 2.4-liter engine pulls well, the speed is no more than 100 km/h, but for the Bukhanka this is not a decisive characteristic. Gasoline consumption is about 14 liters.
  • Ivan, Khabarovsk. UAZ Bukhanka is an excellent option in terms of technical characteristics and cost of maintenance. The parts are cheap, I do the repairs myself. I've already driven 120 thousand km, I'm happy with the car, off-road handling is satisfactory, the car wanders on the highway, but that's normal. A 2.7 petrol engine with a carburetor takes no more than 15 liters in any weather.

UAZ-3909

  • Andrey, Krasnodar region. For our rural areas, the UAZ-3909 “Farmer” is an ideal option for everyday driving. Due to all-wheel drive, handling is excellent, including off-road. The side and rear doors make loading the Loaf much easier. Consumption in a circle is 14 liters. Igor, Volgograd. I bought a used UAZ Fremer with a 2.7 engine for 112 horses and a glass van. There are problems with reliability; the engine had to be repaired twice for 5 years. Otherwise, the car fully met expectations, it is roomy and passable, consumption is around 16 liters per hundred.
  • Alexander, Voronezh. UAZ-3909 “Farmer” with a range of 260 thousand km with a 2.7 engine. I’m quite happy with the car, I repair it myself, with such spaciousness the cross-country ability is excellent, there are simply no analogues for that kind of money. Consumption is from 12 to 15 liters per hundred, I am considering the option of switching to gas.
  • Vladimir, Rostov. Despite the fact that the UAZ Farmer has a bunch of shortcomings, the car suits me quite well. Its main advantage is universalism. A spacious cargo and passenger compartment, more can only be loaded into the flatbed version, wide openings, convenient for loading and unloading, cross-country ability, reliability of the 2.4 engine, which pulls from the very bottom, which is not typical for gasoline engines. True, the car consumes up to 16 liters, but this does not shock me.

UAZ-3962

  • Mikhail, Yekaterinburg. I took a sanitary UAZ-3962 for the occasion, converted it to serve as a cargo-passenger, covered it with aluminum, and covered it with moisture-resistant plywood. The mileage is 188 thousand km, at 160 thousand I capitalized on the 2.7 engine, since they did not spare the car during its service. Now I’m monitoring the condition and couldn’t be more pleased – a passable, comfortable car for all occasions. After repairs and running-in, the consumption settled at 12-14 liters.
  • Alexey, Bataysk. I have been working in an ambulance for 30 years using the good old Bukhanka UAZ-3962, which I once received from the factory. During this time, thousands of lives were saved, thousands of children were born, and the machine continues to operate successfully. The 2.4 engine has been repaired many times, but continues to run vigorously, the suspension allows you to get to the most remote villages. Fuel consumption is about 15 liters per hundred.
  • Vasily, Samara region. For many years he worked in an outpatient clinic as a driver of a UAZ-3962 ambulance van. Reliable and unpretentious car. Robust frame construction, high ground clearance, and 2.4 engine ensure that you can reach the longest calls. Of course, the car is shaking when moving, but it pays off with cross-country ability. Fuel consumption does not exceed 15 liters per 100 kilometers.

Cost of UAZ-220695-04

The fact that the “loaf” minibus has once again “increased the retirement age” was enthusiastically received by many people in the Russian outback, as well as urban hunting and fishing enthusiasts. The UAZ-220695-04 is still valued for its simplicity, spaciousness, phenomenal cross-country ability and modest price - the basic version costs only 650 thousand rubles. There are no other all-wheel drive minibuses for that kind of money and there never will be. On the secondary automobile market, a used “loaf” in the minibus version can be purchased at a price half or three times less.

By the way, in honor of the 60th anniversary of the legendary model, the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant released an anniversary version of the minibus in 2021, for 765,000 rubles. Its distinctive feature is a two-color body (light green, with a top painted in glossy white), a bright nameplate on the side with an antique-style UAZ symbol and the year the family began production, as well as wheels of the same white color.

Many modernizations of this family have been made over six decades. During the last of them, in 2011, UAZ-2206 cars received an ABS system, power steering, seat belts and an engine that meet Euro-4 standards.

UAZ Bukhanka interior dimensions

Like the dimensions, during production, the car’s interior could not be changed; the design and amenities were simple. The vehicle is designed for a user who operates the vehicle every day, under normal road and off-road conditions.

Car UAZ-452 “Loaf”, driver’s seat:

The instrument panel is steel with a simple speedometer dial. In rainy weather, wipers wash the glass with movements directed in opposite directions. The driver's seat has a minimal set of adjustments and lateral support. The power plant is located on the driver's right, which affects the noise in the cabin. The engine cover is not able to absorb noise and vibration, resulting in knocking and rattling on bumps.

A positive element is the use of seat belts and hydraulic power steering (early models were equipped with a mechanical drive). From 2021, the instruments are placed in a single speedometer dial. There is also a niche for installing audio equipment, which the owner needs to buy. Improved noise insulation makes the ride comfortable.

Interior space of the UAZ-452 “Loaf” car:

Passengers are seated on benches made of leatherette. The capacity of the car is ten people, including the driver. There is no need to talk about the comfort of movement, especially over long periods, but off-road driving in the UAZ Bukhanka, the dimensions and dimensions of the interior smooth out this drawback.
