The updated Audi A8 made its debut on its home market at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. The sedan looks fresher and more modern, but the changes are not noticeable. First of all, the new product differs from its predecessor in the radiator grille; it is made in the form of an inverted trapezoid and has large chrome-plated horizontally oriented ribs; it also contains the manufacturer’s logo. On either side of it there are full LED headlights, and for an additional fee you can purchase innovative matrix optics, which will provide you with not only an impeccable luminous flux, but also has several useful functions. It is able to turn in the direction of the turn, illuminate signs and people on the side of the road and does not blind drivers in oncoming traffic. Directly below the headlight optics, in special niches made of black plastic, there are small round fog lights.

In general, the car began to look fresher and more aggressive, thanks to embossed ribs on the hood and sides, LED optics and updated bumpers.

Audi A8 Dimensions

The Audi A8 is a large executive sedan, available in two versions: standard and with an extended wheelbase. The latter allows passengers in the second row of seats to sit in greater comfort; it becomes possible to install a footrest and an elongated tunnel on which air duct deflectors and various controls are located.

In general, the overall dimensions of the Audi A8 are: length 5135 mm (5265 mm in the extended version), width 1949 mm, height 1460 mm (1471 mm in the extended version), and the ground clearance is 140 mm, which is typical for cars intended for movement within urban areas. The size of the trunk can also please you, as much as 520 liters of free space for all your needs, this is a truly impressive figure, you can always take everything you need with you.

Audi A8 engine and transmission

The Audi A8 has a wide range of powertrains, they are quite different and can bring out all aspects of this multi-faceted car. Everyone will find something to suit their taste and budget, both a lover of a quiet and comfortable ride, and a fan of drive. All engines have one thing in common - they are paired with an eight-speed automatic variable gearbox manufactured by the German company ZF. This, in turn, drives the Torsen center differential, which distributes torque between the axles: 60% to the rear wheels and 40% to the front.

  • The base engine of the Audi A8 is a petrol, turbocharged, V-shaped six with a volume of 2995 cubic centimeters. Thanks to the large size of the combustion chambers and the use of turbocharging, the power unit produces impressive power, namely 310 horsepower at 6500 rpm and 440 Nm of torque at 4750 rpm. Thanks to a solid herd under the hood, the sedan accelerates to a speed of one hundred kilometers per hour in 5.7 seconds, and the top speed is 250 kilometers per hour. Despite the outstanding dynamic characteristics, thanks to the use of turbocharging, the engine is not gluttonous. The consumption of the Audi A8 will be 10 liters of gasoline per hundred kilometers when driving at a city pace with frequent acceleration and braking, 6.2 liters during a leisurely trip on the highway and 7.6 liters of fuel per hundred in the combined driving cycle.
  • For lovers of speed and adrenaline, engineers installed the beast under the hood of the Audi A8. This is a twelve-cylinder, petrol W-shaped power unit with a volume of 6299 cubic centimeters. Thanks to the colossal size of the combustion chambers and direct fuel injection technology, it develops 500 horsepower at 6200 rpm and 625 Nm of torque at 4750 rpm. This monster is capable of propelling a heavy sedan with a dry weight of 2150 kilograms to a speed of one hundred kilometers per hour in just 4.6 seconds, and the maximum speed is electronically limited to 250 kilometers per hour. Consumption corresponds to volume, the Audi A8 will consume 15.3 liters of gasoline per hundred kilometers when driving at a city pace with frequent acceleration and braking, 8.4 liters during a leisurely trip on the highway and 11 liters of fuel per hundred in the combined driving cycle. It is worth noting that this power unit is installed exclusively on extended versions of the sedan.

Audi A8 D4 review

Exterior

The Audi A8 D4 is the third generation of the executive model, which entered the market in 2010. About a year later, a charged version of the S8 was released. The main competitors of the Audi A8 D4 on the market are the BMW 7 Series F01/02, Mercedes S-Class W221, Jaguar XJ, Lexus LS460. The body of the A8 D4 was traditionally made of aluminum and was approximately 8 centimeters longer than that of the A8 D3 model. The standard version of the Audi A8 D4 had a length of 5140 mm, and the extended version (A8L) was 270 mm. The weight of the car has increased by 125 kg (up to 2120 kg) compared to its predecessor. Interestingly, the vast majority of cars sold in the American market had an extended body (A8L).

The executive sedan Audi A8 D4 gives the impression of a large and heavy car. However, the aerodynamic drag coefficient of the body is only 0.26. For comparison, this figure is less than the latest generation Volkswagen Golf and other modern compact passenger cars. The manufacturer reports that the frontal area of the Audi A8 D4 model is 2.41 meters.

Compared to the previous generation, the A8 D4 has an increased wheelbase (plus 48 millimeters). The body also extended in length by 75, width by 55, and height by 16 millimeters. These parameters apply to the Audi A8 D4 with a standard base.

If we talk about the long base (Long), then this version has become longer by 130 millimeters. The increase occurred only in the wheelbase. This has a positive effect on the interior space for rear passengers. Adaptive cruise control cameras have appeared in the car's bumper. They are heated to prevent icing during the cold season.

The basic version of the Audi A8 D4 has xenon headlights, but LED lights can be installed as an option. The default wheel and tire sizes are R18 and 235/55. For an additional fee you can supply R20 and 265/40.

The body of the Audi A8 D4 is made almost entirely of aluminum. The exception is the central pillars between the doors, which are made of high-strength steel. In general, the amount of steel in the total body weight is about 8 percent. If you look at cars of this class, only the Jaguar XJ is lighter than the A8 D4. Compared to the previous generation, the A8 D4's body rigidity is reported to have increased by 25 percent.

Salon

The basic version of the Audi A8 D4 is equipped with driver and front passenger seats, which offer 12 adjustment options. For an additional fee, you can add 12 more parameters to them. The base version also includes leather upholstery. The instrument panel has a folding monitor with a diagonal of 8 inches and a resolution of 800x400 pixels. Interestingly, the on-board computer can independently fold the monitor if a dangerous situation arises.

Interior of the Audi A8 D4
2-zone climate control is offered as standard, and 4-zone climate control can be ordered as an option. Of course, it has heated seats, which are available today even in inexpensive cars. But massage chairs are offered only in cars of the Audi A8 D4 class. By default, a BOSE audio system (14 speakers) is installed, which can be replaced with a more expensive Bang&Olufsan (19 speakers, total power of 1.4 kW). The trunk volume of the Audi A8 D4 was 510 liters (the restyled version has 520 liters).

Technical part

The Audi A8 D4 was launched on the market with 2 powertrain models. One engine was gasoline, the other was a turbocharged diesel (4.2-liter V8). By the time the model appeared on the market, competitors in this class offered more economical V6 biturbo engines. So, the V8 diesel engine became the last in this category of cars. Somewhat later, Audi expanded the engine line with a V6 model with compressor supercharging (volume 3 liters).

At the end of 2010, Audi offered a V6 diesel engine and a W12 gasoline engine for the long-wheelbase version. About a year later, a basic version with front-wheel drive and a 3-liter turbocharged diesel engine with a capacity of 204 horsepower was released for the Audi A8 D4. Fuel consumption in the combined cycle for this engine was 6 liters per 100 kilometers.

W12 FSI engine

V8 FSI engine

V8 TDI engine
The petrol power plant with the lowest power is a 3-liter V6 (290 hp).
With this engine, the Audi A8 D4 accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in approximately 6.1 seconds. The V8 FSI petrol engine has a displacement of 4.2 liters and an output of 372 horsepower. The most powerful engine is the petrol W12 with a volume of 6.3 liters and a return of 500 “horses”. Two diesel engines:

  • V6 3.0 (250 horsepower);
  • V8 4.2 TDI (350 horsepower).

All engines are offered with an 8-speed tiptronic automatic transmission. The box uses a technology called Shift-by-wire. It allows you to transmit commands to shift gears electronically. In order to change gear, the command is transmitted to the main control unit of the Audi A8 D4, which is responsible for mechanically engaging a certain gear using electric motors. As a result, German engineers managed to reduce the time spent changing gears. And reduced engine operating speeds result in lower fuel consumption. Once the vehicle is parked, the parking brake is automatically applied.

It is worth noting the Audi Drive Select system, which is also present on other models of the German brand. Its meaning is that you can change the settings of the engine, steering, and transmission. The following 4 modes are offered:

  • In this mode, gear shifting occurs very smoothly, the chassis is adjusted for comfortable movement. When braking sharply, the body may roll and pitch forward;
  • Auto. The on-board computer of the Audi A8 D4 independently determines your driving style and monitors the road situation. Based on this data, the parameters of the engine, gearbox and steering are adjusted;
  • This is the sport mode, which makes the suspension stiffer and the gear changes very fast;
  • In this mode, you can set individual vehicle settings. It is possible to disable the belt pretensioners.

Optional equipment

Traditionally, Audi cars offer a large number of additional equipment. Below are the most interesting options:

  • FlexRay Network. It combines electronic systems such as adaptive headlights, cruise control, navigation system, and camera. As a result, the headlights switch to cornering light mode when approaching it. Or they switch to motorway mode when you enter the highway. And also the lighting can adapt to the characteristics in a particular country. This refers to right-hand and left-hand traffic;
  • Broadband Internet access, as well as 3D navigation (support for Google Earth maps);
  • Dynamic steering;
  • Quattro all-wheel drive system with sports differential on the rear axle;
  • LED headlights with reduced energy consumption;
  • Adaptive high beam control system recognizes oncoming vehicles;
  • Adaptive cruise control with Stop-&-Go function and automatic emergency braking (Audi pre sense);
  • Lane changing assistants, lane keeping assistants, recognition of speed limit signs, parking.

The Audi A8 is a luxury car from the German automaker Audi. The A8 entered mass production in 1994 and its production continues to this day. The model replaced the legendary Audi 200 and now has 4 full generations, each of which was very successful. From the very beginning, the full-size sedan was considered a flagship car, which was confirmed by the conservative appearance of the model and the presence of a huge number of high-tech computerized systems in the car.

    Official information

    In the first generation, the A8 was equipped with the following engines: gasoline 3.0 (193 hp, acceleration to 100 km/h in 8.4 seconds, fuel consumption city/highway/mixed - 14.2/7.4/9.9), 3.7 (260 hp, maximum speed 250 km/h, acceleration in 8.1 sec, consumption city/highway/mixed – 16.9/8.9/11.5), 4.2 (310 hp, acceleration in 6.9 sec, top speed – 250 km/h, consumption – 18.5/9.1/12.9) and the most powerful 6.0 (420 hp, acceleration in 5.8 seconds, consumption - 21.9/10.8/15.1). The model was also equipped with diesel engines with a volume of 2.5 and 3.3 liters.

    Real fuel consumption

    • Artem, Krasnodar. Audi A8, 3.7 liters with CVT. I have been looking for a good executive car for a long time. The budget, naturally, was limited, which is why it was a year older, but the car is a gun. Everything works great. The consumption is very good, if you don’t drive more than 130-140 on the highway, then you can keep within 11 liters, in the city it reaches 18 liters. Model year: 1996.
    • Andrey, Vologda. I've been driving an Audi A8 for almost a year and I can say that it's the best thing I've ever driven. The car is good both on the highway and off-road. I chose the 2001 build with a mileage of 100 thousand (3.7 AT, all-wheel drive). Consumption in winter reaches 20 liters. In the summer, if you don’t drive too hard and without climate – 18 liters, and on the highway 12-13 liters.
    • Sergey, Novy Urengoy. I’ve been driving the V8 D2 for three years now and I’ve never once regretted purchasing it. The car is excellent, equipped in 1997 with a 4.2 AT engine. I have a large family and often get to go outdoors. The car is roomy and powerful. Fuel consumption on the highway is 9.5-10 liters, in the city I keep within 19 liters.
    • Leonid, Samara. Model Audi A8, 3.0 liters, all-wheel drive, automatic (1998). An excellent car for covering long distances. If you don’t press the pedal to the floor and stick to 100 km/h on the highway, you can easily fit in 9 liters. In the city it's 15-18.
    • Arsen, Perm. In 2013, the need arose for a new car. Before that I drove a Mercedes E 1992. The A8 after that is just a palace. The 6.0 AT engine is powerful, front-wheel drive, the car is massive, so it holds the road perfectly. Consumption on the highway is 13-15 liters, in the city - 22-25 liters. I don’t drive very often, so I don’t intend to install gas equipment, and I don’t want to spoil such a car. Build 2001.
    • Alexey, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. I really wanted to find a powerful car, so I chose among similar ones. At first I wanted a BMW 735, but the A8 was more suitable for the price. The monster from Audi (D2 generation) lived up to all expectations - powerful, durable, maneuverable. True, 3.7 liters is too expensive to feed. On the highway it consumes an average of 10.5 liters, and in the city it consumes from 15 to 19 liters. For a year and a half there were no problems. Released in 2001.
    • Ilya, Voronezh. Audi A8, 4.2 liters (200 hp) automatic transmission, all-wheel drive. I am very pleased with the machine, although it is old (1998). It’s very convenient to drive in winter on snow and ice; the car doesn’t drag or spin when cornering, even at speed. Consumption from 13 liters on the highway. In winter in the city it reaches 20 liters.
    • Evgeniy, Anapa. Audi A8 is a car for the soul. This is not my main vehicle, so I just ride it well. The acceleration is like that of an airplane, but if you start abruptly, you can burn 2 liters right away. On the highway, the 6.0 AT engine takes from 15 liters. In the city 23-28 liters depending on traffic. Average consumption for my driving style is 18.2 liters. Judge for yourself... 1999 car, D2 generation after restyling.
    • Vlad, Moscow. It's already been two years since I've been driving my A8. I bought a used car with 53 thousand mileage. I can't say anything bad. My previous car was a Renault Clio, so the consumption of a 3.0 AT was very scary at first. In the city, my maximum consumption was 16.2 liters, which is very good for such a car in Moscow. On the highway 8-8.5 liters and no more.

    Audi A8 - D3 generation (2002-2010)

    Fuel consumption rate per 100 km

    In the second generation, the 3.0 engine already received 220 hp (acceleration in 8.3 seconds, city consumption - 13.8 liters, highway - 7.3, combined cycle - 9.7). 3.7 liter engine: 280 hp, acceleration in 7.3 seconds, maximum speed - the same 250 km/h, consumption in the city/highway/combined cycle -17.1/8.6/11.7 liters. Engine 4.2: power 335 horses, acceleration in 6.4 seconds, fuel consumption 17.5 liters in the city, 8.7 on the highway and average consumption – 11.9. Gasoline 6.0: 450 horses, acceleration to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds, consumption - 21.5/10.9/14.8 liters.

    Owners about consumption

    • Oleg, Moscow. Audi A8 2007, equipped with 6.0 AT. In terms of comfort and practicality, there’s nothing to say – everything is top notch. The car is reliable and there is no need to look under the hood again. Fuel consumption is from 15 to 30 liters. Naturally, 28-30 liters only reaches sub-zero temperatures with constantly working heating.
    • Sergey, Chita. For a long time I wanted a car with a long body, so I decided on the Audi A8 in the second generation D3. The 2002 model, assembled in a new body, is very affordable, which is why I bought it. The car drives flawlessly, is comfortable and visible. Consumption on the 4.2 AT engine is very high: city - 18.5 liters, average consumption - 15 liters per 100 km.
    • Anatoly, Tyumen. Audi A8 with 3.7 liter engine, all-wheel drive. I often drive into the countryside, so I wanted an all-wheel drive car. The car is practical, good both in the city and beyond. The expense is high, but justified. In the city it is 17-19 liters, on the highway with moderate driving it does not exceed 13 liters. Model 2004.
    • Denis, Rostov. I drove a 2005 Subaru Forrester for several years, but the car was completely uncomfortable. I decided to change to the German A8 (D3 generation, manufactured in 2005) and did not regret it at all. I like everything - the appearance, the interior, and the dynamics. Fuel consumption on a 3-liter all-wheel drive will be higher: in the city from 15 liters, if calm, and up to 18 liters. On the highway, not exceeding 120 km/h, you get about 8 liters.
    • Alexander, Surgut. 2009 Audi A8, 4.2-liter all-wheel drive. Last year I brought a car from Lithuania. The condition is excellent, all qualities are excellent, it flies on the highway. Consumption in the city is 20-23 liters with working climate or heating. On the highway it turns out to be 13-15 liters. The appetite is huge, but it’s a car with status.
    • Veniamin, Cheboksary. Last year I bought a used white Audi A8 2003 with a 3.7 AT engine (the mileage at the time of purchase was 27,000 km). It is impossible to save money on such a car. Consumption in the city is from 17 liters, and in winter, during severe frosts, it reaches 25 liters. The average consumption according to the on-board computer shows 18.3 liters.
    • Georgy, Barnaul. All-wheel drive eighth Audi 2006, engine capacity 4.2 liters. You have to travel almost all over the country and on all roads, so the main criterion when choosing was comfort and all-wheel drive. This car fits this description perfectly. Fuel consumption is quite adequate for this class of car: on the highway 10.8 liters, in the city - 20.2, in winter 23-25 liters per 100 km.
    • Vadim, Omsk. Audi A8 in the D3 generation (2003 onwards), 6.0 AT. The car is simply a beast - it can push 200 without straining. Consumption on the highway is 15 liters, if you do not exceed 150 km/h, but if you cross this mark, you will immediately increase from 18 liters and above. In the city it comes out to 24-28 liters. The dynamics are good, a very playful car, unpretentious to gasoline, I fill it with 92 and everything works without interruptions.
    • Nikolay, Nefteyugansk. I bought my A8 car in 2010 from a dealer, new to order. It’s already been seven years since I’ve been riding it. 3.0 liters is more than enough for the city. Consumption in the city with my careful driving is 15.2 liters, and on the highway - 7.8 liters. By the way, I took it with an automatic transmission so that my wife could drive it. The machine works just fine!

    Audi A8 - D4 generation (2010 – present)

Engine 4.0: 420 hp, acceleration in 4.6 seconds, consumption - 13.0/7.3/9.4. And finally, the 6.0-liter engine: power 500 hp. helps you reach 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds. with consumption in city/highway/combined cycle mode – 18.2//9.0/12.4 liters.

    Fuel consumption per 100 km - reviews

    • Alexander, Peter. Audi A8 2013, 3.0 TDI, AT. I have owned the car for 2 years now. I bought a pig in a poke because I didn’t see the product, but everyone said that the car was good. I was convinced of this after my first trip. The dynamics are excellent, consumption in the city is 12.5 liters, on the highway - 7.5 liters. Excellent performance. In winter, consumption increases by 2 liters for both indicators, but this diesel engine has no problems starting.
    • Evgeniy, Moscow. I bought the A8 in the D4 generation last year at a very competitive price, so I didn’t really look closely at the characteristics. After the purchase I realized that I had screwed up. The car is good, but the consumption of the 4.2-liter engine is very high - 15-18 liters in the city and 10-13 on the highway. Of course, if I had known earlier, I wouldn’t have bought it, but if you don’t care about consumption, then the car is super. Build 2011.
    • Alexey, Murmansk. Eight 2011 complete with 4.0 AT unit. I bought a car in the summer of 2011 at a dealership. Front-wheel drive, since I only drive around the city and decided not to overpay. 420 horses delight with dynamics. Consumption in the city in winter is up to 22 liters per hundred, in summer it is much less. Average consumption is about 13 liters. The car behaves great on the road in winter.
    • Vladimir, Saratov. I’ve known the Audi brand for a long time, since for a long time I drove an Audi 100 with a 2.3 engine, then a three-liter A4. But it's time to take something more powerful and more comfortable. So I bought a 2012 A8, 4.2 liter, all-wheel drive, CVT. The consumption of my 4x4 in the city is 20 liters, more in winter. On the highway it’s 11-12 liters, if you don’t push for 120. Otherwise the car is lovely.
    • Mikhail, Tula. Audi A8 2012, 3.0 4WD. I've always really liked the British. I drove a Jaguar S-type for a long time, but outside the city I didn’t have enough all-wheel drive. All my friends drive Range Rover and tried to persuade me to buy this car, but I distinguished myself. I am absolutely satisfied with the purchase. There is plenty of power, and fuel consumption is very good - in the city it’s only 15.5 liters and this is with the climate control turned on, on the highway up to 8 liters.
    • Vitaly, Moscow. I really wanted a Mercedes S500, but, unfortunately, they are very expensive even in the basic package, so I decided on an Audi A8. The car is fresh (latest generation), good, fast. The only thing that upsets me is that it’s more pleasant in the back seat than behind the wheel. Consumption in the city before the run-in reached 16 liters, after – 14.5 liters, which is quite good, considering the engine size (4.2 liters). Average consumption in Moscow is 13.2 liters.
    • Maxim, Moscow. Audi A8 6.0 Quattro Long 2012. I bought a car last year from a friend, moved and sold it very cheap, because I didn’t want to sell the car to resellers. The car is a beast, always the first, and the consumption is ridiculous - 16-17 liters in the city, on the highway half that - 8.5-9 liters. I am very pleased and recommend it to anyone who doubts.
    • Igor, Ryazan. From the moment the A8 appeared in this body, I dreamed about it. Just two months ago I bought it and made my dream come true. I got a 2011 3.0 liter car. The car is beautiful and comfortable. It took me a long time to master the dimensions, as it is very long. Consumption in the city is 15-15.5 liters, on the highway - 9.2 liters. I drive calmly, trying not to press hard or burn gasoline. There is enough power and it responds well.
    • Bogdan, Barnaul. Audi A8 2011, 4 liters, all-wheel drive. The car is right-hand drive, imported from Britain a month ago. This is not my first right-hand drive car, I’m already used to it, so I don’t give importance to such little things. Great engine, comfortable interior. I've only been riding for two weeks, but it feels great. Consumption in the city is 14.5 liters. While I accelerated to 205 km/h, it goes great. On the highway it takes 11 liters.
