It is known that the engine has maximum power, and therefore maximum torque, in a certain speed range, but it is not distributed evenly over the entire tachometer scale. In order to “catch” all the power and transform it for various driving conditions, a box is needed. Its structure is quite complex.
All the power of the torque is transmitted to the drive wheels through the transmission, which for the VAZ 2107 consists of the following parts:
- clutch (its task is to connect the engine input shaft to the gearbox, or to disconnect it;
- the gearbox itself (gearbox), its task is to distribute torque from the engine to the wheels at the driver’s request;
- a system of drive shafts that finally transmit rotation to the wheel drive.
Experienced auto mechanics know that of two cars, the faster one can be the one with the weaker engine, if its gearbox ratios are selected correctly.
What is the gearbox ratio?
Gearbox ratios are quotients of the number of driven teeth divided by the number of drive gear teeth. Also, gears with high gear ratios are called “short”, and low gears are called “long”.
The physical meaning is as follows: since the engine (crankshaft and input shaft) always has the highest rotation speed,
and the rotational speed of the cardan is always lower (that’s why the gearbox is called a gearbox - a reduction gearbox), with the exception of 5th gear, where the gear ratio is less than 1, then the gear ratio is the number of revolutions of the driveshaft per one revolution of the crankshaft.
There is a general rule: the larger it is, the shorter the time it will take when pressing the gas pedal to gain the maximum number of revolutions. Accordingly, the transmission will be more powerful, the car will “jump” forward, but at the same time the driver must be prepared for a quick shift. And, as soon as the car has accelerated significantly, you need to prepare to switch. Therefore, a drop in speed is typical at high speeds.
In order to improve the dynamics of the car during acceleration, you can, of course, tune the carburetor. But if you decide to do something real, you need to change the main gear ratio, the main gearbox pair.
In a gearbox there is such a thing as a row - a set of shafts and gears.
- Initially, the VAZ was equipped with a four-speed gearbox 2101;
- then, in 1976, the “Nivov” gearbox, or 2121, appeared. It was distinguished by a higher range, where the gear ratio was low (after all, an SUV)! In addition, it was equipped with “sixes” with a volume of 1.6 liters;
- a year before the Olympics - 80, checkpoint 2105 appeared;
- Currently, only 2107, 21074 and in some places you can find 2106 are on sale. All other boxes are discontinued;
- Gearbox 2107 exists for a five-speed gearbox, it is called 21074, the difference is that there is a place for mounting the reverse gear unit and fifth gear;
In order not to bore the reader, we present these gear ratios in the table for the 2101 gearbox, the ancestor of the gearboxes (in fact, of course, a Fiat design) and the VAZ 2107.

- – number of teeth on the input shaft (main pair);
- – number of teeth on the intermediate shaft (main pair);
- – intermediate shaft 1;
- – secondary shaft 1;
- – gear ratio of 1st gear;
- — intermediate shaft 2;
- — secondary shaft 2;
- — gear ratio 2nd gear;
- — intermediate shaft 3;
- — secondary shaft 3;
- — gear ratio 3rd gear;
- — gear ratio 4th gear;
- — intermediate shaft 5;
- — secondary shaft 5;
- – gear ratio 5th gear. VAZ 2107 does not.
Even with a superficial analysis, these gear ratios say the following:
- all gear ratios of the VAZ 2107 are slightly lower than those of the VAZ 2101, this makes the box “softer”;
- in 4th gear we have 1, which means that the driveshaft and crankshaft are connected directly;
- There is a 5th gear, which causes the wheels to rotate faster than the input shaft, since the ratio is less than one.

WHEN INSTALLING:
The main pair is 4.1 - the engine is unloaded, it is easier for the motor to spin the wheels, the dynamics of the car increase, the gears are shortened, the maximum speed drops by ~20 km. per hour (at 160 km/h, tachometer revolutions are 5 thousand), fuel consumption + 1 liter. (due to changes in driving).
The main pair 4.3 is the same as 4.1 + 5 mph. in all gears.
Ch. pair 4.1 or 4.3 + sports series (06, 07 or 08): dynamics (fast acceleration due to the main pair) + long gears, mainly 1st and 2nd spin up to the maximum.
Ch. pairs 4.5 and 4.7: gears are even shorter than 4.1 and 4.3 (maximum speed at 5 thousand tachometer revolutions is 140 km/h), recommended use: when towing and transporting heavy trailers.
Ch. pairs 4.9, 5.1, 5.3 and 5.07: used only on steep slopes and climbs (maximum speed 110-120 mph)
Rows: 011, 012, 018 - installation with standard chapter. a pair of 3.9 for forced engines 1.7, 1.8 and 2.0l.
26th cam row (semi-automatic) - gear shifting is carried out without using the clutch, squeezing the clutch is only necessary when starting and stopping.
6th gear retains maximum speed when using ch. couples and sports. row.
Locker (locking differential):
Worm (screw) - increases the vehicle's off-road capability; when one wheel slips, the second wheel automatically turns on (it also turns on when turning).
Disc (friction) - ensures constant rotation of 2 wheels. (Recommended for use only off-road)
Unacceptable:
- Shift into gear with a crunch.
- Switch quickly from gear to gear.
- It is rude to engage the gears (if the gear does not engage, do not forcefully engage it, but release it again and press the clutch, and repeat its engagement).
If you violate the above instructions, the service life of the gears, and accordingly the gearbox, will sharply decrease!!!
Also, it is highly undesirable to start with slipping. Such systematic driving leads to the collapse of the differential, which breaks the gearbox (the large casing suffers), and the car remains unable to move. BE SURE to check that the clutch is in good condition! The clutch is checked like this:
- Correct adjustment of the clutch pedal (pedal at the level of the brake pedal)
- Squeeze, pause for 2 seconds, reverse gear should engage without crunching. If the reverse gear engages with a crunch or does not engage at all, then this indicates that the clutch is “driving” and needs to be changed immediately! With such a malfunction, there is a large load on the front gear synchronizers, which leads to their rapid wear and failure.
What is a gearbox?
The gearbox converts the torque in the box. Each gearbox is characterized by efficiency, gear ratio, specific power, angular speed of shafts, their number, etc.
The VAZ gearbox has one gear, two driven shafts and one drive shaft. Factory relations (3.9 – 4.1 – 4.3 – 4.4). Or, in other words, the cardan needs to make so many revolutions for the wheel to turn once.
The graph shows how the speed of the car (numbers on the horizontal axis) will depend on the crankshaft speed of the engine, (numbers on the vertical axis) which has different main pairs in the gearbox:
Gearbox configurations
Below are the most successful gearbox configurations depending on the engine. For a more detailed selection, you can use a calculator on the Internet.
- The most suitable gearbox configuration for a civilian naturally aspirated engine: 18 row gearbox + main pair 3.9.
- The most suitable gearbox for a sports naturally aspirated engine: 7th row gearbox + main pair 4.3.
- The most suitable gearbox configuration for a turbo civilian engine: row 104 + main pair 3.5.
The differential is two-satellite, the tension is adjusted by different thicknesses of the adjusting ring.
Sports cars often use a differential lock.
A differential lock is a mechanism that locks the differential so that both wheels rotate evenly. Initially, locking was used on SUVs to ensure that the front and rear axles rotated evenly.
In our case, screw locks are especially popular, because they are easily installed in the gearbox, increase cross-country ability on wet roads, and provide an advantage during acceleration due to uniform constant rotation of the wheels.
Backstage
On modern cars, including the new Grants, Kalinas, and Priors, gearboxes with cable drive gears are installed, making gear shifting easy and precise. In Samara: 2114 -2113-2115 the gear drive is carried out not by a cable, but by a rocker.
Backstage
The slide is a development from the 80s, so the gears may not engage the first time, may not engage well, etc.
On sports tuned cars they often install a “short-throw” rocker.
The essence of the short-throw shifter is that the path of the gearshift lever from neutral to gear becomes shorter than it was before. Simply put: the gears are easier to engage, the lever travel is shorter, which gives a significant advantage when shifting.
Review of the gearbox
VAZ front-wheel drive gearboxes have the same problems. They all howl and make noise; the gears have significant play between them, which causes jerking when releasing the gas while moving in gear. As mentioned above, the first gear is too short, and the second is too long, which causes a dip during acceleration and increases wear. Installing a different row of gears may solve the problem of failure, but all sports rows have more noise during operation than a regular gearbox, which is not particularly quiet in operation anyway.
