History of bullpups. The Age of the Bullpup (Part III)

Bullpup: mature age

The last two decades of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st century were marked in the history of small arms by an increase in interest in the bullpup . Weapons in the bullpup configuration entered a period of maturity in the late seventies, when two quite large armies by European standards, Austrian and French, almost simultaneously adopted 5.56 mm assault rifles in this configuration. The Austrians received the Stg.77 assault rifle, better known as the AUG, developed at the Steyr plant. The French received the FAMAS F1 assault rifle developed by the GIAT concern.

Behind the decision to adopt weapons in the bullpup configuration were radically changed tactical requirements for an infantry rifle, since almost all European infantry by that time had become mechanized and had to enter the battlefield on board armored personnel carriers or helicopters, which were distinguished by cramped landing compartments. Because of this, the new weapon had to combine compactness with ballistic efficiency, and the bullpup layout was most suitable for this.

In the next decade, the British Army received the SA-80 infantry weapon system of 5.56 mm NATO caliber, consisting of an L85 assault rifle and an L86 light machine gun, also made in a bullpup configuration. The Germans, one of the industrial leaders of Europe, for a number of reasons decided to jump from weapons of 7.62x51 NATO caliber directly to futuristic weapons chambered for a caseless cartridge, while both the new G11 assault rifle and the light machine gun based on it were also created in the bullpup configuration.

The end of the 1970s was marked by the appearance of the first two truly mass-produced bullpup systems - the Austrian Steyr AUG and the French French FAMAS

The English SA-80 small arms system, which includes the L85 assault rifle and the L86 light machine gun, appeared after a rather long development process, which, however, did not save the system from a number of serious problems

In subsequent decades, 5.56 mm bullpup assault rifles were created in a number of countries, including Belgium, Israel, China, Singapore and Croatia. Among the listed systems, the most widespread, purely due to the size of the customer army, is the Chinese Type 95 system chambered for 5.8x42, and the most commercially successful in terms of sales to different countries, along with the Steyr AUG, can be considered the Israeli IMI / IWI Tavor TAR-21 system .

In Russia, a completely original “double-medium” (amphibious) ADS assault rifle in a bullpup configuration was also created and adopted by the Navy special forces.

It is interesting that submachine guns, a seemingly gradually dying type of military weapon, experienced a kind of renaissance in the bullpup configuration at the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st centuries. First, the Belgian FN P90 of 5.7x28 caliber appeared, attracting general attention with its unorthodox design and location of the magazine above the barrel, and already in the 21st century, clearly in its footsteps, the Type 05 submachine gun was created in China, also chambered for a special small-caliber cartridge 5.8x22, having a bullpup layout and a high-capacity magazine (50 rounds).

It should be noted that only those systems that were initially created in the bullpup layout achieved real success. Numerous attempts to save time and money by converting traditional weapons to bullpups have not met with any significant success. Examples here include the Russian OTs-14 Groza assault rifle, the Ukrainian Vepr, the South African Vektor CR-21 and a number of similar systems.

This can be explained by the fact that the bullpup layout has a number of inherent disadvantages, the main of which is the location of the chamber next to the shooter’s face and a significant distance between the fire control handle and the trigger from the trigger mechanism itself. Overcoming these shortcomings requires special engineering and design solutions, which can be implemented in initially “traditional” systems only through significant (and expensive) alterations that deprive the original conversion of any meaning.

What can you do, although some of my “comrades in the hobby” do not understand me, I cannot stifle in myself (not to be confused with a toad) the craving for everything new. I don't want to either. So: as stated by the seller on the Hansa of this product, it’s a geared bullpup “Taipan II”. Please love and respect. Or not to love. And, accordingly, do not complain. If this product is labeled ll, then I suspect there was also an I, but I don’t know about it. The product is manufactured in Ukraine (it would be more correct to say in Ukraine, but I am more accustomed, due to belonging to the generation that grew up in the USSR, to say “in”). Here is a link to the manufacturer’s website: https://tamaun.com.ua/catalog/7/ Because of this, the caliber of the product is for children. Although, as the seller says, a papal one is on the way, but only on order and only for Russia. Let's go: Packing. It exists, but you can’t call it “branded”. The product is new and therefore we will not criticize the manufacturer for this fact. I remember the first samples of domestic manufacturers, which either did not have it at all, or had something similar. It should be noted that there is still packaging and it is very practical and resistant to shipping.

Equipment. It's standard. The rifle itself, a tray for single shooting (not metal) (we note this as an advantage), a magazine, a filling fitting, spare parts (which includes, in addition to standard rubber bands, two spare pins for fixing the magazine, and two pins of a purpose unknown to me. I suspect that these pins are parts of the trigger.) We take the rifle out of the box. What immediately catches your eye is the quality of workmanship and fit of parts. I can’t help but feel like I’m holding something from Europe. Everything is done carefully. The gaps are minimal, and in some places they are even too close to grinding in (shop). The anodizing quality is high - there are no bald spots, spots or dots. The color is even. The stock, although not the top of “ZEBRANO-Technology” -)), lies clearly in the hands and leaves a pleasant impression. Very practical. The color is strange. In daylight it seems to look gray, but in artificial light it tends towards brown. The coating is a kind of varnish, the nature of which is difficult to understand. The texture of the wood shows through the coating. The butt plate is rubber, thin, with glue, which is not good, in my opinion. For some reason, it immediately came to my mind to call this product the code word (associatively) “SOAP”. And in a good sense of the word. It's very pleasant to twirl in your hands. No sharp corners or irregularities.

The box is similar to analogues of a similar design (we won’t talk about them now). Material - V95T, corners are trimmed, cock - biathlon. Double-sided (you can change the side of installation. It works on the principle of what I saw on the new Diana P 1000. It is spring-loaded and, when pulled back, feeds itself, after which, to cock, you need to pull further 0.7-1 cm. It moves smoothly, like the lid of a Japanese cassette player (who remembers, knows) - )). The barrel mount is standard. The tire is just as common. The only thing I noticed was some inserts squeezing the barrel. The tray for singles was very pleasing in itself, and even more pleased was the system of its fastening, using a pin driven by a lever on the box itself (brass on the side). That is, the “STORE” - “SINGLE CHARGE” scheme can change in the field in a few seconds. The same pin, in the case of a magazine, acts as a magazine lock if its rotation needs to be disabled. In the multi-charge version (which, to put it mildly, was not pleasing and caused bewilderment and wariness), the magazine (as it seemed to me) is held in the box only by the rammer and does not jump out only due to a minimal, very minimal gap. By the way, the magazine has 13 rounds, based on the Monsoon one. Guys from the Ukrainian forum wrote that Bendzh’s seems to be suitable, but this information has not been verified. The tire has a standard Weaver rail (I consider this a standard and rule for such schemes) Chizovsky barrel, standard. Chock. Length 475 mm. Rezik D16T with a WIKA pressure gauge (exactly the same as on the CZ200), which is nice, because it is less of a “show gauge” than multi-colored dials that are now fashionable.-))) I don’t know its volume yet - there is no data. The filling port for an 8 mm fitting is hidden by a rotating silicone casing. The dirt won't get through. You don’t need to buy rubber plugs for the brake cylinders either-)) Now, what do we see on the box?! I’m talking about markings. The brothers from Nezalezhnaya met us and tried to answer as much as possible all the questions that might arise from those who should have them. Country of manufacture, at the request of the seller, Russia is indicated. — ) All the necessary letters are applied and, even for the particularly corrosive ones, the energy is indicated. There is no certificate, for obvious reasons, but the lack of a product passport is a minus. The maximum pressure is also indicated. Moderator - integrated. I haven’t figured out how it attaches yet. There are locking screws, but I don’t know if there are also threads, because I didn’t have time to unscrew them. In any case, it suffocates very well. The shot is quiet even without a bullet, but with a bullet only the firing pin can be heard. The iron in the stock fits well, without any loose ends. The gaps are even. The iron is attached to the wood using two screws and washers. One in the forend, one in the handle.

Descent. The trigger is very pleasant, with a small free play (about 1mm) and is very predictable for a bullpup. Its design is very interesting (see explosion diagram (taken from the post of the seller of the product) https://tamaun.com.ua/img/fe6d3..._1349118097.pdf There is a non-automatic linear safety for the index finger. Very convenient. The hook itself is of a convenient shape. The finger accepts it well. It is located, as they say, in the right place, although my fingers are not that short. In general, from the point of view of ergonomics, in my humble opinion , I would give 5 out of 5! The rifle, in my opinion, is suitable for “car enthusiasts” (both “tankers” and those who like to sprinkle glass on seats), cyclists and simply walking “tennis players” (although I combine all three types) - )), because it is very compact (according to my measurements 70 cm, although according to the manufacturer it is 69.5) and has a height at the outermost protruding points of 19 cm, which is not much in my opinion. In order not to increase this height too much, I chose a not very high scope on the 40th lens and placed it on the middle rings. His weight is also not high. I would put it on low, but my height does not allow it. Fits these requirements: https://swfa.com/Bushnell-6-24x...cope-P4742.aspx The whole structure fits perfectly into the tennis case. Everything is decent and affordable. By the way, about the budget: The price of 40,000 for a geared, multi-charge bullpup is quite competitive! My review is for informational purposes only. The fact is that, as the seller explained to me, the manufacturer is now looking at demand. The larger it is, the greater the likelihood of the project growing into something more. I haven’t had time to shoot the rifle yet, although my Ukrainian colleagues speak positively about it. As soon as I manage to get out to the shooting range, I will definitely post what I managed to shoot. I also measure indicators of speeds and their stability, in combination with consumption. Sorry for the photo quality. I now live in the country and don’t have a normal camera at hand. Just like the Internet in the full sense of the word!

And this is Solomon Efimovich (in simple terms Shlemik) - )) He helped me write the post.- )))
