An-32 aircraft: characteristics, drawings and history of creation (11 photos + 1 gif)

The An-32 aircraft is a multi-purpose military-technical aircraft created in the Soviet Union. Oleg Konstantinovich had many outstanding, memorable aircraft, sometimes he invented an ultra-modern aircraft of his time, sometimes the first of its kind, and there are aircraft that are remembered not only for their technical characteristics, but also for the history of their creation! The An-32 is such an aircraft: a one-of-a-kind airliner, created specifically for export, and was not used in its own country. A photo of the An-32 is presented below.

Story

In the early 1970s, India needed to replace its C-119 with a military transport aircraft that could deliver supplies to both lowland and mountainous areas, about 5 km above sea level, and would be just as safe in the event of technical failures. An airliner was required to deliver heavy weapons, similar to the functionality that only fighter aircraft performed at that time.

The Indians bet on the American Hercules C-130, but it could not cope in thin air conditions, the pilots could not cope with landing, frequent accidents and incidents aggravated the situation.

The An-12, on the contrary, pleased with its reputation, despite the fact that it was also not intended for mountain airfields. The Indian Air Force contacted Antonov's design bureau and negotiations began with Aviaexport. The Indians were flattered that they would participate in the development of the new airliner, because before that Italy and Canada had refused them.

Permanent Indian delegations to the Soviet Union became commonplace. Negotiations were on the creation of one and a half hundred aircraft, this was catastrophically small, the numbers were not encouraging, and developing an aircraft from scratch for such an order required titanic forces, as they say, “the game is not worth the candle.” Antonov suggested that the Indian Air Force turn its attention to the An-26, and they, taking advantage of the advice, appreciated this air transport. The Indians liked everything, except that the plane was not intended to operate in high altitudes. The engines left much to be desired.

Naturally, a proposal was received to modify this aircraft. In 1975, the Ministry of Aviation Administration of the Soviet Union received an official request from the Indian Air Force to create an aircraft that would perform well in the remote high-mountainous regions of the Himalayas at the most neglected airfields, while transporting the heaviest cargo. Complex order? Very! Add to this that the aircraft must have a practical ceiling of 6 km if one engine fails, and you get the general picture of what a difficult task Antonov faced.

The Indians, on the contrary, had a great time; the price for such an aircraft is much lower than those offered to them by Italy and Canada. And at the same time, it was clear that the Soviet Union would cope with the task.

The development was led by the deputy. chief designer V.A. Harvardt and leading designer Yu.P. Cordial. Well, Antonov was responsible for everything, of course.

The designers had a hard time. Never before have they had to develop an aircraft only for export. No one understood how communication would take place, the transfer of the aircraft, what criteria were important for a foreign customer, because the Indians adhered to the motto “keep it simple”, and the creators of the aircraft considered the most important thing to design it, and then solve further problems.

Disasters

According to data from February 2011, 62 flights were spent on the An-32

[6].

The worst plane crash involving a aircraft of this type occurred on June 8, 1996, near Kinshasa. The flight was not able to take off and landed on the market square. 237 people died.

The result of an An-32

What happened on September 26, 2007 in the town of Kongolo (Democratic Republic of Congo), two Ukrainian citizens died - the crew commander and another pilot.
