The first generation of Skoda Octavia A4 was released in 1996. The technical characteristics of the Skoda Octavia led to the car instantly gaining popularity and recognition due to its unusually favorable combination of price and prestige. The hatchback, skillfully disguised as an executive sedan and restyled in 2000, was produced until 2010, sharing the market with new generations.

In 2004, the second generation of the model (Skoda Octavia A5) was released, which was updated in 2009 (you can see it in the photo). And in 2012, the world saw the third generation - Skoda Octavia A7. The technical characteristics of Skoda Octavia cars have been continuously improved all this time, and the body range has always included a hatchback and station wagon, with the exception of the Chinese market, where it is sold in a sedan body. In addition, car owners often tune Skoda Octavia.

I generation

The length of the Octavia was 4,510 mm, with a width of 1,731 mm and a height of 1,430 mm. The wheelbase was 2,512 mm, and the ground clearance reached 134 mm. The hallmark of the car was the huge trunk of 528 liters, and with the sofa folded it reached an impressive 1,328 liters! The curb weight of the Skoda is 1,175 kg. Full – 1,750 kg.

Engines

All modifications of the Skoda Octavia are distinguished by a wide range of engines. So, the first generation had 8 in-line engines!

Petrol trucks

The first was the base, 1.4-liter, injection power unit with an output of 75 hp. With. The thrust was 126 Nm of torque. This made it possible to reach hundreds in 15.3 seconds, and also accelerate to 171 km/h. The appetite in the city was 9 liters of AI-92.

It was followed by a 1.6-liter fuel-injected engine. Although 8-valve, it was much more powerful - 102 hp. s., supplemented by a thrust of 148 Nm of torque. Its dynamics are much better - 11.8 seconds. up to hundreds, with a maximum speed of 190 km/h. But consumption is also slightly higher than that of its predecessor - 9.9 liters in the city.

The next most powerful was the 2-liter naturally aspirated engine, whose power was 115 hp. s., and the torque reached 170 km/h. With an appetite of 11.2 liters on city streets, such an engine accelerated the hatchback to hundreds in 11 seconds, reaching a maximum of 198 km/h.

The top-end gasoline engine was a turbocharged 1.8-liter engine with fuel injection. Its design made it possible to produce 150 horses, as well as 210 Nm of torque. The dynamics of the Octavia with such an engine were impressive - 8.5 seconds. at a maximum speed of 215 km/h. And all this with a city consumption of 10.7 liters.

Diesels

The weakest on the list was the 1.9-liter SDI engine. This is an 8-cavity unit that is not supercharged, but with direct injection. Power is only 68 horses with a torque of 133 Nm. Max speed is 161 km/h and dynamics to hundreds in 18.9 seconds, but the appetite in the city did not exceed 7 liters.

It was followed by a 90-horsepower turbocharged TDI diesel engine of similar volume and also with an 8-valve design. Having direct injection technology, it produced a decent 210 Nm of thrust, while “drinking” 6.6 liters of diesel fuel.

This Skoda accelerated to 181 km/h with dynamic characteristics of 13.2 seconds.

The next one was a similar engine, but boosted to 110 hp. With. power and 235 Nm of thrust. The speed limit has increased to 191 km/h, and the acceleration time to hundreds has been reduced to 11.1 seconds. Appetite remained the same - 6.6 liters. The most powerful was the 130-horsepower turbodiesel with a huge thrust of 310 Nm. Its power was also impressive - 130 horses. Consuming 7 liters in the city, this Skoda Octavia exchanged a hundred in 9.7 seconds. and accelerated the car to 207 km/h. As you can see, the technical characteristics of the Skoda Octavia diesel of this generation were quite up to par.

checkpoint

The engines were paired with 2 types of manual transmissions, as well as an automatic transmission. The mechanics could be 5- or 6-speed, with the latter only available for the top-end diesel engine. There was also a 4-band automatic transmission for petrol engines of 1.6 liters, 1.8 liters and 2 liters, as well as a 90-horsepower diesel engine.

Chassis

It is simple - a standard design with McPherson struts on the front axle and a torsion beam on the rear. The brakes were disc at the front and drum at the rear.

Model range of Skoda Octavia

Starting the story about the generations of the Skoda Octavia model, it is impossible not to mention the car that gave the name to the modern bestseller of the automotive market, Octavia. This is the name of the car that rolled off the assembly line of the Czech automobile plant from 1959 to 1971. Judging by the length of its stay at that time, the Octavia model was in demand, at least in the countries of the socialist community.

The management of the Volkswagen Group, which has included Skoda since the early nineties, decided to use this name, keeping in mind the popularity of the Czech car. In the last decade of the last century, the Volkswagen-Skoda joint project was launched.

The very first Skoda Octavia

1996–2010

This is the first generation (A4, according to some sources - A3) - 1996 - 2010. The launch of the new model took place on September 3 at the car plant in the Czech city of Mlado Boleslav. The history of all Skoda Octavia models began with a liftback car. Two years later, in 1998, a station wagon appeared. At the turn of two centuries, it also received an all-wheel drive modification, in which the main element was the Haldex clutch.

The same year, 2000, was significant in the history of all Octavia models. A sports version of the RS in a liftback body, in demand among young people, has appeared. The Octavia A3 received the same option, but with a Combi or Wagon body, in 2002. The 2000 modernization can most likely be called a facelift, since the manufacturers made only cosmetic changes to the appearance of the car.

New developments by VAG designers and the popularity of the Octavia model range on the market led to the fact that in 2004, despite the ongoing production of the starting generation, production of the second generation began. To avoid confusion among buyers, VW added the word "Tour" to the name of the old Octavia model. The last modernization of the design of the first generation machine took place in 2009, and the next year, 2010, its production was stopped.

VAG, in order to attract greater attention from consumers, equipped all its models with engines of different characteristics and types: naturally aspirated or turbocharged. Octavia was no exception.

Various modifications of the Octavia A4 were equipped with one of:

  • eleven gasoline power units with a volume of 1.4 to 2.0 liters with four cylinders with a capacity of 60 - 115 horses,
  • or
  • five diesel engines 1.9 l, 68 - 130 l. With.

The sports modification of the Skoda Octavia RS was equipped with a “hot” 180 hp engine for those times. With. volume 1.8 l.

One of the gearboxes worked in tandem with the power plants. It could be a manual transmission 5; Manual transmission-6; Automatic transmission-4 and automatic transmission-5.

The car was placed on the family platform of the Volkswagen Group PQ-34.

The first generation car, however, like all other cars in the Octavia model range, has a high level of safety. Octavia is the first of the Skoda family of cars to receive side airbags. According to the results of Euro NCAP crash tests, the Skoda Octavia model of all years receives excellent ratings.

2004–2013

This is the second generation (A5) 2004 - 2013 Octavia. The second generation cars received an improved “trolley”, which was also used by the cars of the German concern, PQ35. Like the old model, the Skoda Octavia was produced in station wagon and liftback body styles.

Skoda continued to please car enthusiasts with a wide choice of engines. The range of Skoda Octavia engines included 13 petrol units and 8 diesel engines. Among them, we note the appearance of units with direct fuel injection of the TSI and FSI lines. In this generation, a proprietary VAG development appeared, which was installed on the model: the DSG robotic gearbox.

The Skoda Octavia model range has been replenished with a new off-road modification, Scout, which is distinguished by increased ground clearance and an original body kit.

The restyling that took place in 2009 changed the exterior and interior decor. The A5 model received new optics, body parts increased in size. In 2011, an experimental batch of Octavia hybrids was released.

2013 – 2021

This is the III generation (A7) 2013 - 2021. The most successful version of the flagship model of Skoda. It set sales records in the automobile markets of different countries and aroused interest in the products of the Czech automaker.

One of the reasons for the increased attention to the model was the increase in the dimensions of the car. The size of the luggage compartment has increased: 568 liters of capacity for the liftback, 588 liters for the station wagon. The ability to fold the rear row seats allows you to increase the space to fantastic sizes, similar to the trunk of large crossovers: 1558 and 1718 liters, respectively.

The interior has become even more spacious; the second row can comfortably accommodate three passengers of respectable size.

There is only one solar engine - 2.0 TDI with 143 hp. With. power. The traction is impressive - 320 Nm of torque. At the same time, a meager consumption of 6.4 liters is combined with decent dynamics (8.9 seconds) and a good top speed (212 km/h).

checkpoint

This time, the Germans decided to abandon classic automatic transmissions, equipping the Skoda Octavia A7 with manual transmission (5 and 6 gears) and preselective gearboxes (6 and 7 range).

Chassis

There was no revolution in the chassis. There are quite a few minor changes, but the overall design remains the same – it’s an independent layout with McPherson struts at the front and a multi-link at the rear. The brakes are disc, but only the front ones are ventilated.

A7 instead of Skoda Octavia A6 – the car owners are only too happy

Advantages of the new model

Thus, the expected release of the Octavia A6 did not take place, because the ceiling of the Volkswagen Group A is the A5 body. The new MQB platform is labeled as A7. This is the story, but Skoda lovers have lost nothing. On the contrary, the third generation of the Czech car, introduced in 2012, began to be bought en masse from car dealerships in Europe, China, India, Ukraine, and Algeria.
