Model description

The Infiniti QX70 (FX) is a premium sports crossover that has been produced since 2002. Until 2013, this car was called FX, then it was renamed QX70. Unlike many other Infiniti, the FX model has no analogues in the range of its sister Nissan. In the Infiniti lineup, this car slots between the QX50 and QX80.

QX70 competitors: Lexus RX, Acura ZDX, BMW X6, Mercedes-Benz GLE-Coupe and other sports crossovers.

The FX/QX70 power plants match the car; these are the most powerful and sporty engines in the range. The most famous and popular engine remains the FX35, this is the V6 VQ35DE, and in the second generation, it is the modified VQ35HR. Second place goes to the FX45 engine, a larger, more powerful V8 called the VK45DE. This engine was installed only on the first generation of the crossover. An even less popular engine is the FX37, with a displacement of 3.7 liters. This engine has a power of 333 hp. and was installed on the second generation of the SUV (S51). The least common are the FX50 with its VK50VE and the diesel FX30d, with the V9X engine.

Find your FX/QX70 modification in the list and you will find out which engine you have, its characteristics, main problems, weaknesses, shortcomings, malfunctions and their causes. And also, what kind of oil should be used, how much to pour and when replacement is required, in addition, we will talk about tuning, the average engine life in practice and much more.

About Infiniti FX35 (QX70) engines of I and II generations

Engine Nissan VQ35DE/VQ35HR 3.5 l.

The Infiniti car belongs to the premium class car and confirms this not only with the power and endurance of the engine, but also with the tax on it (above 40 thousand rubles per year). Fuel consumption in the city is about 20 liters, on the highway 9-12, oil consumption depends on the mileage of the car (if it’s more than 200 thousand, you’ll keep pouring it endlessly). This is due to the fact that catalysts are very sensitive to the quality of fuel and over time, the problem of engine interruptions appears.

The engine of the model (S50) has a fairly strong chain installed, but, as on many Nissans, there are no hydraulic compensators; valve clearances are adjusted by selecting a pusher. The differences between the two generations (S50, S51) are in the intake manifold, cylinder head channels, reinforced cylinder block, and less stiff valve springs.

The first generation was produced from 2002 to 2008, the second, from 2008 to the present. Engines are available in volumes from 3 to 5 liters. This crossover has enough competitors. Among them are Lexus, BMW X6, Mercedes GLE-Coupe, and Acura ZDX. The FX35 was renamed the QX70 in 2013, and its powertrains are worth the investment. In general, the car is very comfortable, sound insulation is at a high level. In a word - premium. Let's add here a pleasant factory growl that will not leave true connoisseurs indifferent, fast acceleration and excellent dynamics.

Engine repairs and deficiencies.

— As mentioned above, one of the main ones is high oil consumption, leading to a major overhaul of the engine and replacement of all 4 catalysts. In order to avoid the problem, it is advisable to immediately replace the upper catalysts with flame arresters. When white smoke appears from

— Check the radiator barrels for leaks and the cooling system for air pockets, otherwise periodic overheating of the engine is guaranteed.

— The FX intermittent idling problem lies in the exhaust camshaft covers.

When purchasing a crossover second hand, be sure to check whether there are jerks when switching. If any are observed, be prepared for repairs. Also, do not ignore the color and smell of liquids. This machine is very picky about fuel and lubricants and, like everyone else, loves timely maintenance.

In principle, systematic engine problems are limited to these three points.

The engine has very great potential and if we talk about tuning this car, then it would only make logical sense to install an aspirated engine (up to 400 hp), which is by no means a cheap pleasure, which is why supercharging is often used.

In general, there are far fewer disadvantages than advantages, so this motor is 100% recommended for purchase.

Engine life of Infiniti FX35 (VQ35DE, VQ35HR)

The Japanese-made Infiniti FX35 crossover is designed on the Nissan 350Z platform. It was first introduced in 2003, and since 2008 the second generation of the car has been in production. Since the car is based on the FX, in addition to the all-wheel drive version, there is a rear-wheel drive version of the car. But all-wheel drive Infinity FX35 was officially delivered to Russia.

Today, car assembly has stopped, but even despite this, the design of the city car still looks interesting and attractive. The model combines several styles at the same time - high-tech and neoclassical, so it will certainly remain noticed on the roads. Even more buyers are attracted by the high-quality and luxurious interior, as well as the outstanding dynamic performance of the vehicle. But before buying a car, the potential owner will certainly be faced with the question of what is the service life of the Infiniti FX35 engine? This is exactly what we will talk about in this material.

Power units Infinity FH35

The car is available in three trim levels: Premium, Sport, Hi-Tech. The crossover received all kinds of sensors and intelligent systems that help improve vehicle safety. As for motors, the following model modifications are available for purchase:

  • Petrol naturally aspirated engine VQ35HR. This is a power unit with a displacement of 3498 cc. cm. At peak it produces 363 Nm of torque and 280 horsepower. This is a V-twin engine with an electronic fuel injection system. A 24-valve DOHC cylinder head is installed on top of the block. There is a system for neutralization and after-treatment of exhaust gases;
  • Petrol engine VQ35DE. The working volume is the same - 3498 cubic meters. see. The engine produces 280 horsepower at its peak. Also a V-shaped power unit with a 24-valve cylinder head and a liquid cooling system. Equipped with a system for neutralization and after-treatment of exhaust gases.

The car is distinguished by powerful engines, a perfectly tuned automatic transmission, good handling and high technology. There are several automatic transmission operating modes. The automatic transmission is adaptive and adapts to any operating conditions.

Engine VQ35HR

This is a 3.5-liter V-engine that has been assembled at the Nissan plant since 2006. The engine, as a rule, is equipped with mass models of the concern, built on the Front Midship platform. In general, the VQ35 engine is one of the mass-produced power units developed by specialists from the Japanese concern Nissan. Winner of various awards, it has been repeatedly recognized as the best unit in its class. The base power is 280 horsepower, but depending on the settings and generation it can vary from 230-250 horsepower in the second generation, and 280-307 horsepower in the third generation. Basically, the differences between generations come down to different cylinder head channels, intake manifold, and cylinder block. The engine cylinders are bored to 95.5 mm, and the pistons are bored to 81.4 mm. Their compression height is 30.1 mm, plus they are coated with molybdenum.

A variable valve timing system has been implemented; CVTC phase shifters are installed on the intake shafts. The VQ35HR engine features larger valves and stronger valve springs. The manufacturer decided to increase the height and rigidity of the cylinder block. The piston group has been seriously lightened: new lightweight pistons, new long connecting rods. Compared to the other engine for the Infiniti FX35, the upgraded engine has a different intake system and different valves. At its peak, this power plant produces 363 Nm of torque and 307 horsepower at 6800 rpm.

How much oil to fill

First generation S50, 2002-2008

Infinity FX35 is an all-wheel drive off-road city car. It stands out for its stylish coupe-like design, which is characterized by a narrow side glazing area and large wheels. The FX35 version had a 3.5-liter V6 under the hood with a power of 280 hp. pp., aggregated with automatic transmission. The car was designed primarily for the American market. The European version was distinguished by a different design of bumpers, radiator grille and rims. Three new colors have also been added. Already in the basic version, the car had advanced equipment: for example, a Bose audio system with a power of 300 W, as well as a media complex with a 7-inch display. The “basic” FX35 also had a leather interior, and the driver’s seat was adjustable in ten positions (the passenger seat in eight positions).

Engine VQ35DE

This motor has been manufactured since 2000 and was installed on the first generation of Infiniti FX35 from 2006 to 2008. This power unit is also known under another code designation V4Y, which is found on Renault cars. This is probably the most famous 3.5-liter V-twin power unit produced by Nissan. Its production is still carried out by Smyrna Plant Iwaki Plant. Consisting of an aluminum cylinder block, a pair of aluminum DOHC cylinder heads and a chain driven timing gear. In the most common modification it received 280 horsepower (the same power in the Infiniti FX35). The engine is equipped with a CVTCS system on the intake camshafts; other features of the internal combustion engine include forged connecting rods along with the crankshaft, and molybdenum coating of the pistons. As in the case of the VQ35HR, there are no hydraulic compensators, therefore, the thermal clearances are adjusted manually (approximately every 100 thousand kilometers).

The advantages of the VQ35DE engine include high power levels, a huge reserve for further tuning and modernization, wide distribution in the secondary market, an abundance of components and spare parts, fairly high reliability and potential. Are there any disadvantages? Of course, it’s impossible without them either. This engine can hardly be called economical; you should prepare for fuel consumption in the region of 14-15 liters in the urban cycle and 8-9 liters in the suburban cycle. Plus, there are no hydraulic compensators, which can also be attributed to minor drawbacks of the engine. In general, all the problems that are characteristic of the VQ35HR apply to the VQ35DE - oil leaks, minor breakdowns, such as failure of the viscous coupling of the cooling fan, unreliable oil channel seals under the front cover. The engine life of the Infiniti FX35 with this engine is approximately at the same level as in the modification with the VQ35HR - 400 thousand kilometers.

Reviews from car owners

Both engines are reliable and durable, with a real service life of over 400 thousand km. If we compare the VQ35HR and VQ35DE engines, then a car with a more modern and improved VQ35HR power unit looks like a good buy. The manufacturer tried and eliminated the shortcoming associated with overheating of the 5th and 6th cylinders. From the factory, this engine is equipped with durable iridium spark plugs. In short, everything is done more efficiently in the VQ35HR, one might say that it is more reliable, so in theory and in practice this power unit is capable of going much further than the VQ35DE. Many automotive experts are confident that today the VQ35HR is the best 3.5-liter V-twin engine in the world.

Infiniti FX35/45 - all about problems and choosing a used one

Buying an Infiniti FX35 remains a dream for many due to various reviews from owners who buy junk with low mileage. This breakthrough design from 2002, which was produced until mid-2008, still looks timeless on the road. “Bashmak” can give a lot of pleasure and emotions from driving in good condition, but does it require so much money per year to be afraid of it? Is maintenance and transport tax in Russia so expensive that you forget about the purchase? Let's abstract from the various subjective reviews of Infiniti FX35 owners and look at dry statistics

Important!

On the VQ35DE and HR engines there are no hydraulic compensators and there is nothing to knock! If in front of you is a date with a knocking engine and the seller talks about hydraulic compensators, then most likely he is a reseller or a deceiver - run away from him!

Restyling 2009

In 2009, the Infiniti FX 35, reviews of which were extremely positive, nevertheless underwent a slight modernization to increase the wheelbase and redesign the chassis, as a result of which the track width expanded by 43, and the length of the car increased by 35 millimeters. The main parameters - a massive rear end, impressive wheel arches, short overhangs and a high body belt - remained almost at the same level. After the modernization, photos of the Infiniti FX 35 were published and the popularity of the model was monitored.

The front part of the car has undergone a more radical update: the shape of the optics has changed, and a new black radiator grille with wavy horizontal stripes has appeared. New diffusers were built into the sides of the front wings to remove air from the engine compartment. To improve aerodynamics, manufacturers changed the shape of the front bumper and the angle of the tailgate spoiler.

Then, in 2009, the car was equipped with a novelty of that time - the Welcome Lighting lighting system, which, as it were, greets the approaching owner, illuminating his way into the cabin, and then warningly illuminating the engine start buttons.

Infiniti FX 35 - weak points and is it worth buying?

The Russian segment of the Internet is almost completely filled with a variety of garbage knowledge and reviews from Infinity fx35 owners who bought twisted junk from resellers, believing in the mileage and legend. Here we will provide information from the original source, i.e. from people who directly operated the FX35 and FX45, and more than one car and more than one month. Most of the Diagnostics Laboratory specialists have personally used the Infinity Fx 35/45 “boot” in one way or another. In addition, Infiniti FX 35 and 45 has long been the main diagnostic focus of our organization, so we have something to say on the topic of problems, diseases and statistics.

Brake system

A crossover, whose specific operating conditions are more intense than other cars, must stop dead in its tracks under any circumstances. The brake system "Infinity FH 35" is dual-circuit, diagonal functioning. The central cylinder transmits hydraulic pressure to all four calipers simultaneously. Next, the forces are distributed between the front and rear wheels depending on the vehicle load. All Infiniti FX 35 brakes are disc brakes with ventilating perforations.
