Luxury jeeps adapted to our roads

The Infiniti brand officially came to Russia very late. Its closest competitor, Lexus, has been successfully selling its cars with us for several years. However, “gray” dealers were engaged in sales of “Infiniti”, and three years ago “Klakson” tested the “asphalt” SUV “FX45” of the premium segment, which they imported. Since then, “FX” has undergone several restylings (most recently in 2006); In addition, now that this Japanese brand has “registered” in the Russian Federation, the Infiniti FX35 and 45 cars have been adapted for our roads. The Klaxon correspondent took a ride in updated jeeps from Moscow to Suzdal and back. In some ways they are noticeably different from their fellow “Americans,” but in others they remain the same.

Review of Infiniti FX35 3.5 i V6 24V 2WD (2005)

Well, I sold my RX 300, I didn’t want to invest in replacing air struts (2 pieces - 50 TR), I sold it and started looking for something else. I've been looking at the Infiniti FX for a long time, I liked it, it's a man's car, powerful, solid, still not outdated in shape, looks impressive on 20 rinks, has almost all the necessary options in the database.

Of course, I also read about the disadvantages - heavy oil consumption and bad brakes. But as usual, I would like to hope that this is not about me, and everything will be fine on my car. I eventually found an FX 35 (280 hp, all-wheel drive, entry-level equipment), December 2005, imported and sold here in Russia by Lakikar. I took it to the dealer, they examined it, everything is in order, the brake discs are new, the engine is dry, the gearbox runs smoothly. I bought it for 800 rubles, registered it, did not insure it under CASCO, the amount is serious - more than 120,000 rubles, too steep for the cost of the car indicated above. I started driving, and then I realized why the car was so special:

PROS:

1 An excellent automatic machine, it works quickly, smoothly, I have never had a better one.

2. Solid appearance of the car.

3. Great Bose music, with a subwoofer, sounds just right, turn it on and go.

4. Quite sharp steering and serious dynamics (few can compete), I mean that for the money in terms of appearance, packaging and dynamics there are practically no competitors.

5. Quiet and high-torque engine, the exhaust sound is mesmerizing and makes you drive faster.

MINUSES :

1. Poor visibility, small rear-view mirrors and closely spaced pillars, the feeling that you only need to look forward and drive...

2. Burnt oil (approximately 300-400 grams per 1000 km) (I can’t judge, but mine consumed exactly that much, although there are also specimens without burning).

3. Brakes. I understood why they sold me a car with new brake discs. You are driving calmly, you start to slow down, the car stops normally, although the deceleration is weak for such engine power (about a C), after a minute the braking again (for example, from a speed of 80-100 km) is smooth, not to the floor, while the brake pedal begins to hit a little, then another braking gets worse - the beating gets stronger, then more, eventually, after 5-6 brakings, the steering wheel begins to jump in your hands, and the passengers begin to look at you, as if your car is about to fall apart and you need to get them out urgently. I felt extremely uncomfortable when I was taking employees from an exhibition in Moscow home to Obninsk. Replacing brakes with adequate ones costs 80-100 tr. (Akebono brake system).

4. Gasoline consumption. I drive calmly, but my consumption in the combined city-highway cycle (there are no traffic jams in Obninsk) is 16-17 l/100 km. Moreover, all filters are new. It seems to me that this is a lot, the RX 300 on a constant full ate 12-13 on average.

After a month of getting to know the FX 35, I sold it, at least I didn’t lose anything, but my buyer was also upset about the consumption and brakes and decided to urgently sell the car, and in the end he dropped it by 100 thousand rubles. Cheaper than I bought it for, sold it for almost a month. A car for boys, turn up the music and go, don’t care about consumption, taxes, etc., but you can’t drive with such brakes.

SUSPENSION.

It has changed, and quite noticeably. The Infiniti FX45, intended for the US market, was distinguished by its chassis rigidity. Most Americans like (and buy) cars that are very smooth and soft, sometimes excessively so. But the “Infiniti FX” with its sporty image was an exception: in order to achieve almost perfect handling, the “asphalt” jeep was equipped with a sports car-style stiff suspension.

And for Russia they made the car softer. According to representatives of Nissan (the Infiniti brand belongs to this automaker), on our roads, which are far from even overseas in quality, the “American” suspension, firstly, would be too uncomfortable, and secondly, short-lived. So it was reconfigured.

However, to call the adapted “FX” soft would be an exaggeration. Especially when it comes to SUVs in the “Premium” configuration, which implies a “sports” suspension. On a good surface, such a car rides as if on rails, but when “sleepers” appear under the 20-inch wheels in the form of cracks filled with tar, bridge joints or other irregularities, the shocks in the cabin are felt quite clearly. Not that this greatly annoys the riders, but sometimes the car needs to be steered. However, there is a softer option - the most affordable “FX” version with a 3.5-liter engine in the “Elegance” package. Its suspension is not “sports”, moreover, such a car is equipped with 18-inch wheels with larger profile tires - this helps it to cope even better with the defects of Russian roads. Simple paragraph

Driving performance of the car

Continuing the test drive of the Infinity FX 35, it is worth considering the capabilities of the 3.5-liter power unit with a capacity of 280 hp. With. Working in tandem with a 5-speed automatic transmission, this engine is practically the most noticeable element of the vehicle. The gear shift speed is quite fast, and the drive automatically becomes full when cornering or when accelerating. Although in other situations the FX 35 remains a rear-wheel drive crossover.

Rice. 4. SUV during a test drive.

The Infiniti's off-road capabilities don't allow it to go off-road. The car is more designed to overcome small obstacles in urban environments. However, if it is necessary to drive on dirt or grass, the crossover will complete the task - although the driver will have to drive at a very low speed.

ENGINES.

The digitization of “Infiniti FX” instruments has been converted to the metric system.

Remained the same. Petrol V6 (3.5 l, 280 hp) and V8 (4.5 l, 328 hp) go well with the sporty image of an “asphalt” SUV. The difference of 50 horsepower between the two versions is not very significant: “FX45” has an advantage of 1 second when accelerating to “hundreds” and 16 km/h in “Maximak”. The difference in price - almost tens of thousands of dollars - seems more significant. Of course, during intense acceleration, the “thirty-five” has to strain and make more noise, and at high speeds over 170 km/h it is inferior in temperament to its more powerful brother. In addition, compared even with the expensive “FX35” package, the more powerful “forty-fifth” is equipped more richly: chrome moldings on the windows, interior trim made of natural aluminum and wood.

You can save $3,500 on the base FX35, but in this case you will get a car without the Infinity entertainment system with a 7-inch DVD screen for rear passengers, without tinted grille and lights and, as already mentioned, without the “sports” suspension.

A DVD player with a seven-inch screen is available only in the “Premium” package.

IGNITION SYSTEM.

Has changed. The quality of Russian gasoline did not suit the Infiniti imported from the USA; This was confirmed by research by Nissan specialists. The FX, like all Infiniti officially supplied to our country, has expanded octane corrector capabilities (depending on the octane number of the fuel, the computer automatically adjusts the ignition timing). Now you can safely fill them with 95-octane gasoline at an unfamiliar gas station, without fear that the car will sneeze or cough due to bad fuel. However, it is still better to use proven gas stations.

Dependence of characteristics on the configuration

A test drive of the Infiniti FX 35 according to the technical specifications showed that the car is equipped with a naturally aspirated gasoline engine, depending on the volume: 3.7 liters and a power of 333 horsepower, or 5 liters and a power of 400 horsepower. The updated version comes with a diesel engine, which was developed and tested in the vicinity of Munich. The volume of the turbodiesel is 3 liters. Regardless of the configuration, the car comes with a 7-speed automatic transmission, rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, and the Attesa E-TS torque distribution system.

Fuel consumption and engine acceleration with a 3.5 liter engine:

  • in the city 16.6 liters per 100 km;
  • outside the city 9 liters per 100 km;
  • in the combined cycle 11.8 liters per 100 km;
  • acceleration to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds.

Fuel consumption and engine acceleration with a 5-liter engine:

  • in the city 18.3 liters per 100 km;
  • outside the city 9.6 liters per 100 km;
  • in the combined cycle 12.8 liters per 100 km;
  • acceleration to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds.

Photos of the interior and exterior of the Infinity FH 35

The Infiniti 35 is beloved for its excellent sporty ride performance and the growl of its V-6 and V-8 engines. The suspension is made neither hard nor too soft; this suspension comes in the Elegance package with 18-inch wheels. The improved version will have 21-inch wheels and 265/45 tires. If desired, you can turn on the vehicle stabilization system. The Infinity 35 has a light steering wheel, so at first it will take a little getting used to the controls and specific movement. However, the crossover is a pleasant ride thanks to the use of all-new double A-arms instead of MacPherson strut suspension.

The video test drive of will show the necessary characteristics and capabilities of the car:

TRANSMISSION.

The headlights of the Russian “FX” versions comply with European standards.

It has changed in some ways. Under normal driving conditions, the Infiniti FX is a 100% rear-wheel drive vehicle. But if necessary, the thrust can be distributed between the axles by means of an electromagnetic clutch up to a ratio of 50:50. On the American “FX” there was a button that fixed this ratio, that is, the car acquired permanent all-wheel drive. Now this button is gone. The fact is that in “4x4” mode, an “asphalt” jeep can only be used at low speeds, no more than 60 km/h. And “FX” owners often neglected this rule, which led to transmission failure. Therefore, on the “Russian” versions the button was removed - out of harm’s way. Our Infiniti FX owners, when traveling on snowy roads, will have to rely only on the electronics that distribute the forces along the axes. But they will have another button at their disposal that was not there before. It turns on the “snow” mode, slowing down the car’s response to pressing the gas pedal to avoid sudden starts and unexpected slipping. As for real off-roading, the “FX” – either “American” or “Russian” – is not created for it. This, we repeat, is an “asphalt” SUV. Stylish, sporty and still modern.
