Nissan Patrol Y62 has sharply changed its orientation in search of new markets. But, trying to win the wallets of the sheikhs instead of those who like to stir mud, he did not please anyone. So much the better for the secondary buyer: prices for Nissan Patrol are falling stronger and lower than for their closest competitors. The buyer will only benefit. But what? Let's find out in the review.
Appearance Features
Not only the characteristics of the Nissan Patrol are loved by our car owners, in addition, the SUV is also distinguished by its attractive appearance. First of all, the exterior of the car should be emphasized by its impressive size bumper, which is equipped with various inserts, a stylish radiator grille, as well as huge and powerful head optics. Lighting elements are protected by special plastic domes. You can tell that this is Nissan in front of you by its huge logo.
From the side, the car looks even more menacing, which is explained by the solid side windows, as well as tinting. In general, from the side the vehicle strongly resembles a Range Rover. The similarity is explained by the presence of chopped lines. The rear of the car does not look as smooth as the front. The connections are sharp and angular, however, everything looks very harmonious.

What has changed in the “six” against the backdrop of Patrol V
The bottom line. From a harsh car for conquering and overcoming, Patrol has turned into a soft, leather, technical and expensive car.
The car, contrary to popular opinion in the information field, remained frame. The place of continuous axles was taken by an independent suspension, and even with hydraulics. The harsh off-road transmission with transfer case is also a thing of the past. Instead, an electronically controlled All Mode 4x4 appeared.
True, the box was left with a lower row, and the rear axle in all trim levels was equipped with a cross-axle differential lock. That is, he can still move off the road, but why?

A little boo. Nissan Patrol (2010-2017)
No matter how radical the changes were when changing generations of the Nissan Patrol, it was invariably followed by a trail of myths and legends. And the manufacturer had to try his best to match some and refute others.
The entire long journey from the first copy, released in 1951, to the last generation of the Nissan Patrol was accompanied by features that seemed unshakable: frame, part-time, axles, lowering... As well as reliability, endurance, indestructibility.
With the advent of the Y62, the foundations were shaken, but, fortunately, not all and not too much. And even if we no longer meet the sixth generation on the Rybachy Peninsula, it still rarely appears on the car service lift. Of course, it’s good that the legend has not become a myth, although some questions about the Patrol’s reliability remain, which, however, has always been the case. Nissan Patrol is still heavy and you need to be careful off-road
ETERNAL VALUES
Fortunately, the Nissan Patrol Y62 did not lose its frame, but the suspension became completely independent, although rather long-travel. And the drive from the classic part-time has turned into an automatic AWD/TOD with torque transfer forward as the wheels slip or under the influence of other factors. In-line engines went into oblivion along with warped heads and burnt out blocks. Their place was taken by V-shaped, increasingly eight-cylinder ones. The cabin no longer crushed tall pilots and passengers with its ceiling, and even the Toyota “200” was envious of its volume, something that had never happened before. The location of the first presentation of the Y62 clearly hinted at the main sales market - Abu Dhabi. Now the Middle East is storming from the outside and from the inside, but then the world (in this case the Arab world) wanted to joyfully ride along 100-meter dunes, having eaten what is not prohibited... The 5.6 liter V8 engine was perfect for this. Bridges on sand are only detrimental, lowering is often the same, but a comfortable suspension and overall coziness in the cabin are what you need. And then experts came from all over the place, and it turned out that Patrol was not giving up its position. And although it has become a little plastic, it behaves excellently off-road, without disgracing the name of its ancestors. Particularly interesting was the position of that part of the Toyota fans who, having seen the Land Cruiser 200, muttered in disappointment something like: “Ugh, some kind of shawarma, let’s go to Nissan,” but in the end they received “Shawarma No. 2” . I don’t like to argue about design, as they say, who is the priest and who is the priest’s daughter (especially since Nissan also has the Infiniti QX). I remember how in 2011 they called me at the editorial office with a question, they say, you don’t know where to buy the previous Y61, otherwise the new one is somehow not very good...
IT SHOULD BE
A large SUV of any class must certainly carry a V8 - Americans have been teaching the planet this for three hundred years, but the planet has only recently understood this. Without these 400 hp. and 560 Nm, the new Patrol would be like the old one - a car for those who were late to live. The seven-speed automatic transmission is neither more nor less. Just in time! In Russia, the gasoline engine, contrary to the forecasts of marketers, was not at the peak of popularity, which is not surprising if we remember all these crises. But there was no diesel engine. In some places, the Patrol Y62 is sold with a 4.0-liter V6 engine, but I’ve only heard about it. Our current VK56VD suffers from a weak timing drive and problems with the fuel system. The key to its long life can be described in one phrase - good oil, good gasoline. The engine is equipped with a DIG direct fuel injection system, as well as a VVEL valve timing and lift control system, which did not help it much in terms of fuel consumption. I, for example, managed to maintain 17.6 liters per hundred only when I was driving, without touching the gas pedal at all, being overtaken by an Oka and some student on a scooter. The student was the last straw, and, having touched the pedal, I instantly raised the consumption to 25 l/100 km in mixed mode, but still overtook the impudent one with a scarf around his neck. The timing chain, or rather the entire mechanism, can interrupt a triumphant run, since the entire mechanism will have to be changed, but the fault will be the chain, namely the camshaft drive on the right side. The problem occurs in the widest mileage range from 50 to 150 thousand kilometers and quite often.
The engine has only one drawback - it is picky about the quality of oil and gasoline.
Since the engine is equipped with a common rail system, it has a high-pressure fuel pump - injection pump. So, the fuel injection pump drive is connected precisely to the timing chain stream going to the right cylinder block. There are only two chains. The pump is a loaded unit, and the right chain stretches faster. Even faster than the manufacturer and owner expect. Having stretched out, it begins to saw itself, touching the metal of the engine in the area of the dampers, and it is this sound that is heard from under the hood. It’s as if there’s a little Bulgarian sitting there with a big “grinder”. After restyling in 2014, the unit was modernized, and now there is no need to shell out 150,000 rubles for repairs. It would seem that you can live and be happy, but the one loading the fuel injection pump chain became upset, and by the 100,000 mileage, or even by half of the specified period, he makes his contribution to the chronicle of failures. I'm talking about the infamous pump rod. The disputes did not subside for a long time, which leads to the destruction of the rod. They found shavings in it, and traces of contact with the drive, and even with the bottom of the well, but this is not important, but the fact that a new and original injection pump will cost at least $1,000. A refurbished one may cost three times less, but it is also guaranteed only by the seller. And also, if you change it from the officials, then a preventive replacement of the timing drive will follow, which will double the cost of repairs, bringing it to the level of “I will never buy a Patrol again.” Catalysts can be killed by a tank of low-quality gasoline, and this will add another 40,000 rubles to your current account. If you try to save money and do nothing, you may end up having to overhaul the engine due to the destruction of the honeycombs. All sorts of little things, such as a cracking washer reservoir and a sticking electric fan coupling, need not be mentioned against this background.
The third row of seats is not much more cramped than the second
LUCKY NUMBER
The car's shaking at idle, and especially during smooth acceleration, informs the driver about problems in the torque converter. This is the main and perhaps the only problem with the seven-speed transmission of the Nissan Patrol Y62. The solution is inexpensive - diagnostics cost $200 and repairs cost about the same. The manufacturer knows about the problem and after restyling it solved it by increasing the throughput of the hydraulic connections of the box. Theoretically, this box is prone to overheating, but if, contrary to the service book, you change the oil in it at least once every 60 thousand and do not drive for a long time faster than 150 km/h, then everything will be fine. Overheating at high speed is characterized by the fact that the transmission does not want to shift down for some time, which is a software protection against damage. As in previous Patrols, the chassis is extremely reliable. Despite the automatic all-wheel drive, system failures are almost never encountered. There are no problems with souring of the rear differential lock, or the servo drive for turning on the low range of the transfer case. In general, there are no obvious system problems at all, and the natural wear of components begins at 150–200,000 mileage and is quite predictable.
There is no arrogant luxury in the interior decoration, but everything looks quite rich
PENDANTS OF THE KING
Initially, the independent suspension of the new Patrol caused furious indignation among fans of the brand. At one time, a similar reaction was provoked by the rejection of springs, and before that, something else probably caused dissatisfaction among the owners of one of the previous versions. New things are not always welcome, even if they are not so new. However, despite some problems, the completely independent suspension of the Patrol Y62 has demonstrated its viability and right to exist. And these problems were associated not so much with the suspension itself, but with additional equipment.
It reads well, is easy to understand, simple to operate, and what more do you want?
The new Patrol is the first SUV to feature the HBSC system. This device, consisting of suspension shock absorbers and hydraulic accumulators, is designed to combat roll in corners while improving articulation off-road. The system is hydraulic, therefore, losing oil, it may work a little worse. About the same as a regular shock absorber. First, the body roll will increase, after which the roll will be complemented by a slow return to the vertical position and rocking will appear when shifting to the other side during active maneuvering. In the end, the body will begin to sway from the slightest movement of the steering wheel, both across and along. But, as servicemen assure, no one has ever gotten to this point. The machine is heavy, tall, and even a slight weakening of the system becomes very noticeable. Rarely, a drop in pressure in the HBSC was accompanied by the tapping of something unknown about something unknown. After the repair, the knocking, as well as the rolls, disappear. Another knock from the steering shaft can make you nervous. Treated with a replacement for $200 and can occur again for no apparent reason. However, the malfunction does not affect traffic safety.
Following its competitors, Patrol offered an advanced control system for off-road assistants. Quite reliable, it should be noted
After the 2013 restyling, most of the listed problems were corrected, and the Nissan Patrol found a second youth. Now, in order to catch up with the popularity of its predecessors, it lacks only one thing - a diesel engine... Not counting the fact that in the summer of 2017 it was removed from sales in Russia...
Owner's review: Ilya, architect, Nissan Patrol, 2011
I wanted a large American SUV, but when I saw the Patrol, I was captivated by its appearance. Then he appreciated the spaciousness, dynamics, and two replacements of the intermediate steering shaft, which became his biggest problems. That is, it turns out that in three years of operation there were almost no problems. I hope it stays that way, after all, Patrol is Patrol!

Chic and shine Nissan Patrol Y62
Electric drives are everywhere - even in the fifth door. Headrest monitors for rear passengers. Pile of wood. Full leather upholstery. Veneer. Pile carpets in the trunk... It was not without reason that the sixth Patrol was presented against the backdrop of Dubai skyscrapers and the Arabian desert - a thick hint of the habitat and a new target audience.
Did not work. Fans of previous generations thought that all the ostentatious luxury and change of emphasis was a problem for Nissan Patrol, and the nouveau riche with portfolios of venture capital investments were not particularly interested in the upstart - yesterday's "collective farmer fisherman."
As a result, compared to its closest competitor, the Land Cruiser 200, the Patrol could not boast of outstanding sales. And survivability in the secondary too.
Now for a Patrol they ask from 950 thousand to 2,600,000 rubles, for a “Cruiser” of the same years - on average 200-600 thousand more. On average, Patrol is valued at 1.43 million rubles, Land Cruiser 200 - at 2.1 million rubles.
That's all you need to know about changing the Patrol's course from off-road to premium - it's not appreciated at the very least. Moreover, compared to its competitor, Patrol looks much more preferable for everyday life.
Firstly, it is more technologically advanced and richer, and should rather be placed on a par with the top-end “Cruiser” - Lexus LX. And it’s not a fact that the LX will look decent against the backdrop of the Patrol with all its veneer, white leather, and multimedia.
Secondly, the Patrol is more interesting than the Cruiser in terms of asphalt driving: the independent suspension of all wheels and the HBMC hydraulic anti-roll system have an effect, which helps keep the body level during braking and turns. As a result, traveling on the Patrol is a completely different experience for all passengers: there is no rocking at the rear, no heeling in turns, as much as a five-meter “yacht” can avoid heeling.
Thirdly, the Cruiser is less interesting for its dynamics: even the top-end 5.7-liter gasoline version does “0 - 100” in an endless 10.5 seconds. Any Patrol Y62 does this in 6.6 seconds.
If we translate it into more mundane terms, then the Kruzak does not drive at all, unlike the Patrol.

Engines
The Nissan Patrol is equipped with a 5.6-liter 8-cylinder gasoline engine in two modifications: VK56VD and VK56DE with a power of 405 (400) hp. and 317 hp respectively. A Japanese SUV with the most powerful and most advanced engine was officially supplied to the Russian market. The less powerful engine is identical to the unit used in the 2009 Nissan Armada and Infiniti QX56 (JA60).
The stronger one is the same one that was installed in the Infiniti QX56 (Z62) 2010 model year, and since 2014 in the Infiniti QX80 (Z62). The VK56 VD is equipped with a DIG direct fuel injection system, as well as a VVEL valve timing and lift control system. But all these tricks did not significantly reduce fuel consumption. And the engine itself often provokes owners to press the gas pedal once again. Therefore, few people have an 8-cylinder monster that consumes less than 25 liters per 100 km. However, if you adhere to the speed limit on the highway and drive at a constant speed without overtaking or stopping, it is quite possible to get a “fantastic” 15 liters.
Unfortunately, the magnificent power unit was not without flaws. One of them is a timing chain drive. Some owners encountered this problem without even traveling 15,000 km, others were struck by failure only after 100,000 km, and others only learned about the deficiency when approaching the 200,000 km mark. The manufacturer recognized the defect - a weak timing chain of the right bank of cylinders. The chain is additionally loaded by the shaft of the high pressure fuel pump (HPFP), which leads to its stretching. The main sign of the disease is a squeal (like a grinder) after starting a cold engine, as the stretched chain begins to touch its inner sides. Some car enthusiasts, having heard a lot about a possible defect, began to be more careful about engine maintenance and “play” more gently with the gas pedal. But, as it turned out, taking care of the engine does not protect you from misfortune.
Repairs are not cheap. To replace it, you will have to completely disassemble the “face”, remove the entire frontal part of the engine and even dismantle the steering rack. In the official service, for a full range of work with spare parts, they will ask about 150,000 rubles; in a regular service, you can spend about 60-80 thousand rubles. Since 2013, a modified chain began to be installed. It is worth noting that after professional repair and installation of a reinforced chain, there is no need to return to the unpleasant issue, unlike the injection pump.
The high pressure fuel pump, as a rule, caused problems (not all) closer to 100,000 km. However, some owners encountered its malfunction during a later run. The reason is a design and manufacturing flaw: the fuel injection pump rod is destroyed.
The cost of a new pump is almost 100,000 rubles! To this it is necessary to add exactly the same list of installation work as when replacing the timing chain, as well as direct preventive replacement of the chain drive. The result? At least 160,000 rubles in a regular service or 200,000 rubles in an authorized one!
The following defect is of a potential nature. Russian fuel destroys catalysts quite quickly (up to 100,000 km). As a result, the engine begins to operate intermittently, misfires occur, traction drops noticeably, and the malfunction indicator lights up. If you delay replacement, the catalyst may collapse, and its “remains” will end up in the engine, where they will cause irreparable damage to the cylinder walls. The cost of new catalysts is from 40,000 rubles. Many owners resort to preventive protection - cutting out the catalysts without waiting for trouble, followed by installing flame arresters, oxygen sensor emulators and reflashing the engine control unit.
Nissan VK56VD and VK56DE engines use an electric cooling system fan clutch. The clutch is controlled not by a bimetallic plate (as before), but by an electromagnetic valve. Some owners, after 150,000 km, encountered a malfunction of the electric clutch - it jammed and the fan began to spin like crazy. Sometimes it even came to his self-destruction.
Valve clearances are adjusted by selecting pushers.
Cons of the Nissan Patrol Y62
Reviews about the sores of the Nissan Patrol Y62 in general are as follows: there are a lot of sores, but they are minor.
As for the main components - the same suspension with a tricky hydraulic roll compensation system - the owners don’t particularly complain, but they regularly complain about some annoying little things. So, the pre-restyling “Patrols” of the early batches often had headlights fogging up. For some it went away on its own, while others went to dealers. Under warranty, they willingly changed it - it’s unlikely to come across such a jamb now.
More about moisture: Patrol owners in reviews talk about fogging in the upper left corner of the windshield. It can be treated by turning on the second row air conditioner.
And another of the massive complaints about the shortcomings of the Nissan Patrol U62 - the window regulators, more often the driver's, less often - all of them, failed prematurely.
From the same childhood ailments, but very minor things: poor sizing of various rubber pads and gaskets, paintwork is not resistant to chipping. But the good news is that all of the above remained in 2010-2011. and has long been corrected by dealers under warranty.
It’s worse if a couple of serious problems are not corrected, which will cost the “secondary” owner a good hundred thousand rubles in repairs. We are talking about a short-lived automatic transmission: the owners of the first batches of Nissan Patrol 6 complained about the transmission “freezing” and jerking when switching. On cars manufactured in 2010, the problem was recognized as a warranty issue - dealers replaced the valve body separately or the entire box assembly.
Further, the story of the sixth “Patrol” is more bleak: childhood sores were more or less eliminated by 2012, the forums are silent about the restyling of 2014.

Off-road characteristics of Nissan Patrol u61
For those who are going to mix up the dirt and take part in rides, you need to properly prepare the car. First you need to find a Patrol y61 in more or less good condition and modify it to the state of an SUV. It is better to buy a stock car that has not yet been used for off-road driving; it will be in better condition. And then you just need to buy additional off-road equipment and install it on the car.
But you need to understand that the stock Patrol, like any other jeep, will not drive through soft mud in which road tires slip. In addition, there is a possibility that the car will bury itself, because the Patrol weighs approximately 2.5 tons and has a long wheelbase. There’s even a video on this topic about how difficult it is to get out of such soft mud:
In general, to prevent this from happening, the Nissan Patrol 61 still needs to be modified, and this will cost a lot of money - about half the cost of the car. Here's what you'll need to buy and do:
- increase ground clearance - make an elevator;
- install 35-inch wheels;
- install a snorkel for those who are planning to enter the swamp;
- install a bumper with a winch;
- body and underbody protection;
- it is necessary to change the main pairs so that the 35th wheels function normally.
All this off-road equipment costs quite a lot of money, if these parts are not Chinese and the installation work will also cost money. But for real jeepers, these are all trifles and everyday problems that can be easily fixed.
Nuances of selecting Nissan Patrol VI generation
Well, accordingly, it’s ideal to look for cars manufactured after 2012: the disadvantages of early models were eliminated at the factory, and you’re less likely to encounter foggy headlights or a kicking automatic transmission. Although, given Nissan's sober warranty policy, you can also look at earlier copies. The faults were recognized and corrected if the previous owner contacted me, of course.
As for the previous owners, their cleanliness and attention to the car can be checked without even looking at the car in person. If you look into a car's history, you'll see everything from arrests to repairs.
Here's an example. “Fully equipped, leather interior, heated steering wheel, all seats, full climate control,” it is written in the comments to the ad.
The lurid tuning of the front end catches your eye. It’s immediately clear: either the owner has a special taste, or he’s masking a frontal impact. Let's see what the check says through avtocod.ru.
Checking for accidents at Nissan Patrol does not find any problems, but there are enough problems there even without this. I immediately want to say “no” because of the unpaid fines and the ensuing restrictions on registration.
I want to say “no” even more decisively after checking the mileage. It is wound up, and wound up generously: for a good hundred thousand kilometers in 2019 alone.
Obviously, it is more expensive for you to get involved with such an instance.

Inexpensive maintenance for Nissan Patrol u61
Another good thing about the Patrol is its inexpensive price tag for maintenance; spare parts for it are inexpensive, but you still have to pay for the work of the craftsmen. Therefore, it will be a big plus if you understand it yourself and can repair the car yourself.
Many spare parts for the Patrol are suitable even for domestic cars and other foreign cars, so you can save a little. But the car’s fuel consumption is huge, so you’ll still have to spend money on it.
But auto mechanics will swindle you out of money the most, because they see that the car is expensive, which means its owner has money, and they will swindle you out of serious money, and if you go to the officials, they will rip you off completely and say that you need to do major repairs.
Therefore, the main thing with these devils is not to be a sucker, because they can sell you a cheap part for serious money if you don’t understand your car. A more or less competent specialist can make such a part in 5 minutes or find an inexpensive analogue.
It will also be interesting to read: Crash test of UAZ Patriot 2017 demonstrates unsafety
For example, if service technicians see errors in the fuel system, they can easily begin to suggest changing the injection pump, it will cost 250,000 rubles, and the problem can be very trivial - a contact has disappeared somewhere or air has formed in the system. And in general, the injection pump can be repaired, the main thing is that the technician is normal. Therefore, we should not rush to pay money, but try to figure it out at least a little. And it’s even better to find friends-masters who won’t scam you.
The most important thing is not to buy such a car for the last money, and especially not to go into debt. You need to understand that if you buy a used car, you should still have the same amount of money left over for repairs and replacement of consumables, just in case.
Generations 1 to 4
The first generation of the famous SUV rolled off the assembly line in 1951 and became known first as the Nissan Store, then as the Bluebird Store. In appearance, the Patrol resembled the Willys series of army off-road vehicles, although it was slightly different in size. In an effort to improve passenger comfort, Nissan developers made the car a little longer and wider, reducing only its height. After the update in 1955, the Patrol's dimensions remained unchanged - the updates of the first restyling affected only its technical parameters.
The second generation of the SUV became even more comfortable, and could now accommodate up to 8 people inside. The interior of the car became spacious after increasing the maximum wheelbase to 2.8 m - although the line of modifications also included smaller versions, with 2.2-meter and 2.5-meter distances between the axles. The second generation of the model was offered in 6 versions - both with a convertible body and as a station wagon with a removable roof, a pickup truck, a three-door or five-door car, and even a fire truck. Therefore, some dimensions of the Nissan Patrol from 1959 to 1980 were noticeably different - the length varied between 3.779–4.24 m, although the manufacturer did not change the width and height until the next generation.
