Karambit - knife of the peoples of the Malay Archipelago

Possession technique

Of course, at first you want to take the karambit with the usual straight grip, there are even models that require just such a grip, but all the advantages described above can only be applied with a traditional grip. This type of weapon is included in the standard ammunition of some in different countries of the world, as well as of rapid response teams. Military personnel who use karambit undergo special training to learn how to use this non-standard knife. It should be noted that without such training it is unlikely that you will be able to use the weapon, and you can even harm yourself.

Karambits: what are they?

-
This is a type of knives most often used for
self-defense
.
Their design features are ideal for inflicting piercing blows and cutting wounds that injure tendons, muscles, tissues, and arteries. Such knives
are widespread in their homeland - throughout the Malay archipelago, and now - they have begun to actively expand the territory of their use, and are finding fans in other countries. This weapon is already seven centuries old and it is not known exactly why it was originally invented, but more on that a little later.

Structurally, karambit knives

, like all other types of knives, consist of a blade and a handle, but the blade is crescent-shaped and has the shape of a claw, and is sharpened only on one side. The blade is small in length and can be between five and nine centimeters.

The unique feature of this knife

The handle was equipped with a special ring, which is designed to provide a strong grip and prevent the hand from slipping.
The shape of the handle allows you to twist
and hold it with both a direct and reverse grip, and a finger (little finger or index finger) is threaded into the ring. Thus, the hand is fixed and, with any blow, will not slip onto the blade and will not be injured, and also, the enemy simply has zero chances that he will be able to knock the weapon out of the owner’s hands.

The handle of the knife itself is overhead, it is traditionally made of wood, and is fastened with one or more rivets.

Many modern karambits

They are also available in slightly different types from the classic version. For example, some of them are made in the form of a folding device, and there are also those that are equipped with a small spike on the handle, which can also be used as a spear weapon.

In addition, today the knife is available in two types: non-folding and folding karambit

.
In the second case, it becomes comfortable to wear, but its service life is slightly reduced. The folding
knife is equipped with a special clip, thanks to which it can be attached to a belt, making it convenient to carry. It happens that holders are also produced for them (these are special plastic holders).

Despite its small size, this type of weapon, especially the classic awkward model, requires mandatory equipping with a sheath for

its wearing, which are normally sewn in accordance with the shape of the weapon (the ring, as a rule, remains outside). Leather is the best choice for the material from which the sheath is made (it is soft, easier to put on the blade, and quite durable).

Design advantages

Everything is clear in appearance, but how to hold it and what to do with it? It is very difficult for a person who picks it up for the first time to figure out why a karambit knife is so interesting and dangerous in a fight. Firstly, the grip itself involves threading it through a ring, making it practically impossible to knock out or lose the weapon in a fight. Secondly, the karambit can be given rotation, which makes attacks unpredictable and gives an advantage. You can increase the amplitude of the gun's movement and strike even if the enemy has evaded. Among other things, they are not so easy to inflict serious wounds on, which is very valuable in self-defense. The most you can do is cut the muscles or tendons. The enemy will be afraid not so much of the pain as of the amount of his blood, and retreats as quickly as possible.

Another important advantage is that the karambit knife is inconspicuous, since you have no need to scare people on the street. If you decide to purchase such a bladed weapon, then pay attention to the quality of the steel and the strength of the structure, as well as the convenience - grab it, twist it. The main thing is to make it as comfortable as possible for you to use the karambit. Its price varies widely, it all depends on the manufacturer and quality of the product. You can find an offer for 290 rubles, but there are also options for 12.3 thousand rubles.

Traditional and modern models

Such a weapon was invented in the Malay Archipelago; the earliest mention of it dates back to the 14th century. The karambit knife was used not only as a means of attack or self-defense, but also for domestic purposes. The Filipinos, for example, used such knives to climb palm trees, and also used them for ritual purposes (if you look closely, it resembles a tiger claw). At one time, weapons were considered women's weapons because they could easily be hidden in the folds of a skirt. It is in its traditional form that it has come down to us, but, unfortunately, everything is undergoing changes. On the modern market you can even see a folding karambit or with an extended handle for a direct grip. Of course, in this situation, a different technique is needed, different from the classical one, but it all depends on the preparation.
