Double-barreled shotgun Izh-43 (Mr-43). Review, Shooting and Conclusions

The Izhevsk plant produces excellent weapons that take part in the education of entire generations of hunting fans. The next result of the work of factory specialists aimed at the mass production of smoothbore shotguns was the IZH 43. The basic basis for the creation of this double-barreled horizontal shotgun was the 58th model, which in turn is a cheaper version of the expensive IZH 54 shotgun.

History of creation

In principle, hunting does not require modern rifle developments, but progress is constantly moving forward, and as a result, the next version of the horizontal rifle began to be produced, created in the eighties to replace the IZH 58 model known at that time.

Gunsmiths were able to globally improve the mechanism that automatically removes cartridges after a shot. The new series was opened by the first versions of IZH 43 M and IZH 43 EM, which rolled off the assembly line in 1986. Their features were considered:

  • improving the quality characteristics of the gun safety;
  • improved connection of the receiver to the box, increasing the reliability of the product.

Previously, in the IZH 58, the barrels were locked with a strap using three under-barrel hooks, but in the new version there are only two such hooks left. The practical application of the 58th modification has proven that this quantity is quite sufficient. Also, the protrusion on the barrel coupling was removed, which made it possible to improve the fit of the barrel breech to the box.

The double-barreled shotgun IZH 43 EM receives an ejector for removing cartridges, which has certain design differences from the analogue installed on the IZH 58 MAE:

  • the girth of the sleeve flanges has increased significantly;
  • one ejector spring was replaced by two autonomous ones that better fulfill their purpose;
  • cartridges not used during the hunt were now extended 6 mm more than those of the “predecessor”.

A set of improvements significantly increased the reliability of the ejector, which previously had a lot of complaints.

The IZH 43 shotgun has many modifications

Piece shotgun IZH 27

In addition to a wide range of modifications, a special version is available for connoisseurs of the model - a one-piece modification of the IZH 27 Rus.

This version of the IZH 27 piece gun has silver engraving, 2 pairs of barrels, as well as improved build quality, fit and overall operation of the mechanism. A kind of factory tuning. The only drawback of the IZH 27 Rus is the price tag, which is more than twice the cost of a regular double-barreled shotgun. For this money you can buy a foreign gun (the quality of manufacture and fit of which is completely different), so the choice of a domestic version can only be justified by an attack of patriotism and the exclusivity of the product itself.

In addition to this exclusive, limited editions are also produced with special engraving (at the customer’s request), special materials for making the stock and butt and their individual fit - of course, for an additional fee.

Design

The gun is double-barreled, the barrels are positioned horizontally. The breech and channels of this model are made of carbon steel alloy and do not have a protective coating. Inside the muzzle there is a section with a metric thread that allows you to install replaceable choke constrictions. The trunks are connected by a strip using the soldering method. The sight is represented by a classic bar, which has a recess and corrugation that does not emit glare, and a bronze front sight.

The barrel channels are locked with a pair of lower latches; the unlocking lever is located on top of the receiver. The extractor lever is mounted in the lower part of the chamber; when the block is broken, it extends.

The trigger trigger is internally located, with a release mechanism and safety cocking. The rebound springs and strikers with triggers are made one-piece. A separate removable block assembled on the rods consists of screw-type mainsprings and a stop fixed with a pin. At the moment the barrels open, the springs are compressed and the hammers are cocked.

IZH 43K with external false triggers

The escapement mechanism is mounted on a separate cylinder with a pair of independent hooks with holes for the axle and a window for the springs. The fuse bracket is screwed onto the bottom. Another difference is that the triggers are spring-loaded to the heels of the sear, which made it possible to eliminate backlash. The front trigger was also spring-loaded for the purpose of protecting the finger from impact when firing with the left barrel, which presses the rear trigger. The protrusions on the triggers (located in front and on top) do not allow firing when the barrels are not completely closed. This feature increases the level of safety when operating domestic weapons.

The safety on the gun is automatic; it locks the trigger and sear hooks. You can smoothly release triggers that are cocked by switching them to safety. To do this, open the barrels completely and move the safety button forward, press the triggers with your fingers and smoothly close the gun. The fuse is represented by a flat part, fixed with an axis on the shank of the receiver and spring-loaded in the direction of movement of the clock hand. The push-button axis moves in a shaped safety groove and is secured by a pin from below through the holes. A distinctive feature of the production of the new gun from previous modifications is the additional fixation of the automatic safety, which locks the triggers, with a ball.

The butt is attached to the center, located between the shank of the receiver and the cylinder. Its front end is tightened with a screw to the oblique surface. The hole for the screw in the end is covered with a butt plate secured with a pair of screws.

Bullets

Round bullets for IZH -27 should always be slightly, 0.2-0.3 mm smaller than the diameter of the muzzle, as for bullets with a belt - they should be 1 mm smaller. The belts must exceed the diameter of the muzzle by 1mm. To check the correct fit of such a bullet, it must be lowered into vertically standing barrels - the bullet should drop 1-2 cm inside the barrel.

It is also not recommended to shoot cartridges with a large charge, so as not to damage the barrels. The lethal force will be added slightly, but damage to the barrels during such shooting is more likely. It is not recommended to shoot with old cartridges (loaded in the last hunting season); it is better to reload them again.

Thus, the model under consideration is a reliable example of a double-barreled weapon, tested by time and entire generations of hunters. Unfortunately, truly high-quality samples are already decades old and, as practice shows, the younger the gun, the worse the workmanship. However, there are also quite decent specimens that, if properly maintained, can last a very long time.

Advantages and disadvantages

The main thing that distinguishes double-barreled shotguns is their reasonable cost with decent quality guns. The design is durable and reliable; effective shooting ensures a high degree of safety; the accuracy of fire is acceptable; all characteristics are excellent for hunting. The weapon is balanced, the trigger features completely eliminate the possibility of an accidental shot.

No specific shortcomings have been identified, but there are frequently encountered nuances, because the quality of IZH 43 copies always varies due to manual labor during assembly. If the user does not have the necessary experience in choosing a gun, it is better to seek help from specialists who will check everything that is necessary for the IZH 43. Only after this can you confidently say that you have purchased a high-quality universal weapon. And even if minor shortcomings appear, they can be easily eliminated on your own.

Users often express dissatisfaction with poor processing of wooden elements. Yes, there is a flaw, but it can be easily eliminated - you can purchase a special impregnation for wood; those who wish can pre-sand the surfaces of the wooden parts. If the ejector operates unstable, pilling is performed.

In the factory, the fuse bracket may have been incorrectly manufactured, which often causes damage to the index finger. In these cases, experts advise simply replacing the part.

Specifications

The IZH 43 hunting rifle has the following parameters:

  • production is established in two calibers - 12 and 16 mm;
  • chamber length, mm – 70 and 76;
  • gun weight – within 3.6 kg;
  • trunk length, mm – 660, 720 and 750;
  • fired - from 15,000 shots;
  • assembled gun length, mm – no more than 1,300.

The IZH 43 barrels are removable type, with a horizontal arrangement, their connection is made by means of a sighting and lower strip. The breech of the head is connected by a coupling and pressed into place with an incoming pin.

Double closing of the barrels is carried out by a locking bar on two under-barrel hooks. Shotguns are available with or without selective ejectors. In the second option, the ejector does not work; the cartridges are removed by hand.

Modifications

Today, the produced IZH weapons are known as MP 43 with a caliber of 12 mm and a chamber length of 70 (76) mm. There are versions of the MP 43 for 16 gauge and a 70 mm chamber, and for calibers 20 and 410 mm there are 76 mm chambers. Note that IZH 43 versions 410/76 are produced with barrel drilling in two options - 0.25 cylinder and payload or 0.75 and choke.

The barrel length of the MP 43 varies in the range from 510 to 750 mm, but products with a maximum barrel length are produced only for 12 gauge. The remaining samples differ in the maximum barrel length of 71 cm.

The main modifications of IZH 43 include:

  • gun IZH 43 E (MR 43 E) - the basic version, equipped with a switchable selective ejector, which, when opening the barrel, removes only the spent cartridge case. The entire ammunition remains in the barrel, which makes quick reloading convenient;
  • IZH 43 1 S (MR 43 1 S) is a gun with one trigger. The sequence of shots from each barrel is easily switched, the switch is mounted in the upper part of the trigger itself;
  • IZH 43 E 1 S (MR 43 E 1 S) – an analogue of the previous model, equipped with an ejector;
  • IZH 43 K (MR 43 K) – a gun with external false triggers. It is popular among those who transport weapons in a loaded state and prefer to quickly cock the mainsprings without opening the gun. It should be noted that, unexpectedly for everyone, American fans of historical guns became interested in this model, and there are known references to models with fake fire tubes, produced with the expectation of the demand of this particular sales market;
  • IZH 43 EM - the main difference from the IZH 43 M is the mechanism that automatically ejects spent cartridges.

Samples IZH 43 M, IZH 43 EM, IZH 43, IZH 43 E, MR 43 “Prestige” can be manufactured in regular, piece and export versions. The weight of shotguns for 12 gauge does not exceed 3.3 kg, and IZH 43 M for 16 gauge weighs no more than 3.2 kg.
