Appearance Honda Civic 4d
To be honest, the new Honda Civic looks more like a restyled version Civic than an independent model. There is not a single fundamentally new feature - in each line one can feel the effort to imitate the successful exterior of the ancestor. The descendant came out much less expressive and original, to be honest. True, the designers re-drew the rear lights, and it turned out even worse. Obviously, the authors of the Honda Civic's assumed that the red and white triangles would look too boring and “glued” additional sections to them.
It all looks quite ridiculous and reminds me of the result of garage “customization”, when would-be craftsmen try to use affordable means to refresh the appearance of the long-out-of-fashion outlines of their elderly cars. For such a respected company as Honda , this is somehow frivolous. However, other Japanese manufacturers also “improve” their cars in a similar way. In particular, when looking at the rear lights of the restyled Toyota Corolla, it is difficult to resist analogies with the “tuned” products of AvtoVAZ . I really hope that this vicious epidemic that has engulfed Japanese manufacturers will soon dry up.
Yes, I admit, there is a lot of annoyance in my words. After all, speaking about the exterior of the ninth version of the Honda Civic 4d , I invariably recalled the expressive Civic number eight with its predatory squinting headlights and rear, reminiscent of the Nissan Skyline . And it became, you know, a shame for the Japanese school of automotive design. But if you imagine for a second that there was no eighth generation, and after the seventh, the Honda Civic immediately began to produce the ninth, then the annoyance will diminish.
Overall the car looks quite harmonious, especially when viewed from the front.
2014 Honda Civic 4D review: exterior, interior
The Japanese manufacturer tried its best to make the Honda Civic 4D and 5D models as different as possible. Most likely, this desire has led to the fact that the hatchback looks much more creative than the sedan. The Honda Civic 5D is superior to its lineup brother in almost every way.
This applies not only to the exterior design, but also to the interior decoration. It seems that one car was assembled as a budget option, and the other as a full-fledged vehicle. Moreover, they do not differ much in cost. As a result, the Japanese had to urgently modify the sedan.
The new Honda Civic 4D is characterized by stylish and impressive body curves. Particular attention was paid to the stampings, which clearly catch the eye. The overall bumper is divided into two sections of a false radiator grille, which is richly trimmed with chrome and plastic inserts. A black mesh made of strong alloys provides reliable protection for the front of the car.
The silver arc that borders the bottom of the bumper looks creative. Fog lights and air intakes are visible in the darkened slots. The naked eye may not notice them, but the elements cope with their main purpose. The lighting technology, which was enclosed in large and strong domes, became a little unusual. The headlights have also undergone a number of changes. In general, the front of the car is almost unrecognizable.
A side inspection of the station wagon reveals a number of features. For example, the driver's door is slightly wider than the passenger door. There are several arcs along the entire body that give the car a sporty and aggressive note. According to the owners of the car, this is exactly what the predecessors of the Honda Civic 4D lacked. The wheel arches have also increased in size. The posts that support the roof are narrow, but original. The level of the windows is quite high, but this does not create any special problems. The hood smoothly flows, so to speak, into the windshield, and only then into the roof. There are no sharp bends even when cutting off the stern.
The back looks a little bland. It is difficult to find any originality in her image, since the developers clearly did not bother with the design of new concepts. The massive bumper is supported by domes of lighting equipment and side lights. Below it are foglights and air intakes. There is no spoiler, which slightly affects the aerodynamic coefficient.
Overall dimensions of the Honda Civic 4D are:
- Length – 4540 mm;
- Width (quite a lot) – 1750 mm;
- The height, in turn, is very small - 1430 mm;
- The wheelbase is only 2670 mm;
- Ground clearance – 150-160 mm.
The model is offered in several enamel shades. Colors are divided into standard and auxiliary, which can be purchased in addition. The first are represented by the following options: white, red, blue, brown and black. Auxiliary shades include various metallics and dark colors.
Classic tires for the Civic 4D are considered to be 205/55R16, although wheels such as 225/50R16, 225/45R17 and 235/40R18 will look no worse. Almost all tires are made of light alloys. Wheel arches are not designed for tires whose radius exceeds size 18.
The review will not give you the fullness of the feelings that overwhelm a person entering the cabin of a Honda Civic 4D. Constructors and designers have really transformed the interior of the sedan for the better. The restyling was clearly not in vain. First of all, this concerns finishing materials. Almost everywhere, durable plastic, leather and high-quality fabrics were used. There are also numerous metal inserts. The manufacturer offers two interior design options to choose from: black with dark seats and light with beige sofas.
The dashboard with a multifunctional dashboard looks attractive. The eye is drawn to several radii, which are brightly illuminated by LEDs. There are also buttons for controlling the climate control, infotainment system, and a small touch display. The picture is complemented by air deflectors, which organically fit into the overall style of the front part of the cabin. The battery copes well with the loads of various devices.
The steering rack and wheel were selected taking into account all the features of the car, so it is incredibly pleasant to drive the vehicle. The designers also took care of the soundproofing of the cabin. Thickened glass and special metal alloys help in this.
Honda Civic 4d interior
Describing the interior of the new Honda Civic , I again cannot resist comparing it with the previous model, especially since here too it is a complete retrospective, although much more successful. the Honda Civic's dashboard was a double-decker, and that's what mainly attracted attention. Now the console has become three-story high - the lower part, where the climate control is located, is made of plastic of a different color and texture, and the middle part with the radio and tachometer is slightly protruded forward and turned towards the driver.
On the third floor of the Civic , as before, there is a digital speedometer. Only now he is accompanied by a small screen of the on-board computer, on which, moreover, you can change the desktop “wallpaper” by uploading a picture via the USB input. All parts are made of hard, but very high-quality and pleasant to the touch rough plastic. Well, this experience of developing a successful concept can already be considered successful.
Ergonomics Honda Civic 4d
As for the controls of the Honda Civic , no obvious flaws were noted - everything is at hand and is located logically. The only thing that was somewhat puzzling was that the climate control parameters are regulated not by the usual “knobs”, but by buttons. I wouldn't say it's inconvenient, but rather strange.
When driving a Honda Civic, you have to sit composedly - the seat has quite pronounced lateral support and lumbar support, which is not adjustable in any way. You can, of course, lounge in a chair, but the sensations will be dubious. Honda Civic is not a car for the lazy. I really liked the steering wheel in the car - it has a small diameter and is quite plump, just right for active taxiing.
The rear sofa of the Honda Civic was designed according to a completely different philosophy and turned out to be very practical. Its cushion is almost flat, which is why the average passenger does not feel discriminated against. In addition, there is a flat floor under his feet. For some reason, most other compact cars still have a tunnel, despite being front-wheel drive. Passengers sitting on the edges will not be offended either - they will not have a lack of space either above their heads or in their legs. In general, we can say about the Honda Civic that it is a five-seater, and this would not be an exaggeration.
The Civic's luggage compartment left mixed impressions. Yes, it turned out to be quite large: 440 liters. In addition, the handles for reclining the seats are brought to the very edge - there is no need to reach deep, bending over a dirty bumper. But what prevented the designers from placing a handle on the trunk lid so that it could be closed normally? Obviously, Honda Civic will have to either get their fingers dirty on the exterior metal or tug on the roll bars.
Specifications
The 2008 Honda Civic 4D was only front-wheel drive and was equipped with several options for a four-cylinder (sixteen valve) in-line engine, which was located in the front, transversely.
- Gasoline 83 hp. Volume 1.4 liters. Installed in combination with a manual transmission. Until 2008, it was five-speed. Later it was replaced with a six-speed.
- Gasoline 140 hp. Volume 1.8. The most massive unit. Cars were supplied to Russia only with this engine. It has one feature, which is that the catalyst, which is connected to the exhaust manifold, practically enters the cylinder head. This increases the risk of engine overheating if there are any problems with the cooling system.
- Gasoline 200 hp. Volume 2 liters;
- Turbo diesel. Volume 2.2 liters;
- Hybrid: 1.3 liter petrol plus a 20 hp electric motor. This option was produced only for Europe and was well known there.
All gasoline power units had distributed injection. The maximum speed guaranteed by the manufacturer for the sedan was 200, and for the hatchback – 210 km/h. At the same time, the car reached a hundred in 9.1 seconds if it came with a manual transmission and in 10.8 (10.9 for the hatchback) seconds with an automatic transmission. The hybrid engine turned out to be not so “spirited” and made it possible to reach the same speed in 12.1 seconds.
Fuel consumption in the combined cycle for sedans was 6.6 (6.7 with automatic transmission) liters, and for hatchbacks – 5.8 (6.3) liters. The hybrid “European” took only 4.6 liters of gasoline for the same hundred.
Regarding gearboxes, it is worth mentioning in addition that the Honda Civic 4d sedans supplied to the Russian market came with mechanical six-speed gearboxes or five-speed hydromechanical automatic transmissions.
Depending on the body, the chassis has its own characteristics. Unlike hatchbacks, which have an H-beam at the rear, sedans are equipped with fully independent suspension. The weakest link turned out to be the springs in the rear suspension, which poorly withstood the full load (the car sagged), which according to the passport is 1700 kg with the curb weight of the car being 1194 kg. This deficiency was corrected in 2010. And the most durable parts were the ball joints and stabilizer struts.
Riding a Honda Civic 4d
The main thing that the Honda Civic is its driving properties. According to the latest trends in saving on everything possible, Honda marketers have introduced only one single engine for the Civic to the Russian market. And that, like the exterior, is a modified version of the engine that was installed on cars of the previous generation Civic. Some consolation may be that in Europe the choice is also small (only three engines), while Civic was available with as many as seven.
So, the 1.8-liter engine produces 142 horsepower, but only spins up to 6500 rpm. Driving in this mode is a pleasure. Honda Civic engine seems to sing a song that can be clearly heard in the cabin, fortunately the sound insulation is specially “tailored” for this. The wheels, of course, provide their own accompaniment, but it is not too loud thanks to the elaborate insulation of the arches.
The adaptive automatic transmission, even without any sport mode (it is available only in top versions of the Honda Civic ), allows the engine to rev up well and switches to a higher gear only at 6800 rpm. In general, if you want, you can have a good time behind the wheel of a Civic .
You won’t surprise experienced Honda drivers with peppy, high-revving engines. The main achievement of Japanese engineers is efficiency. The engine, like its predecessor, has an I-VTEC system that regulates valve operation depending on load and speed. At speeds up to 3500 rpm, the engine works for efficiency, and after that - for dynamics. If you try, then, according to managers, fuel consumption in the urban cycle can be increased to 8 liters per hundred kilometers, and in the suburban cycle - up to 5.5 liters. The EcoBoost system can help achieve these indicators, which changes the operating mode of the automatic transmission, but, again, only works up to 3500 rpm. If you press the pedal to the floor, the Honda Civic will show its fighting character.
Maintenance cost
Urban fuel consumption averaged about 9.5 liters per 100 km; in traffic jams and during dynamic driving, consumption increased to 10-11 liters; on weekends and on empty roads - it dropped to 7.5-8 liters per 100 km. On the highway at a speed of 80-90 km/h, fuel consumption was 4.5-5 liters per 100 km; at a speed of 110-120 km/h – it increased to approximately 6 liters per 100 km.
The standard car warranty is three years or 100 thousand km, whichever comes first. Maintenance frequency is once every 15 thousand km or once a year. The cost of minimum maintenance is 2.3 thousand UAH; extended maintenance will cost 3.5-5.2 thousand UAH.
Prices are indicated as of April 2021, excluding various additional discounts and bonuses when purchasing a car or servicing it, other than those indicated above regarding the year of manufacture of the car.
Chassis for Honda Civic 4d
The car forgives a lot to inexperienced and careless drivers. You can now drive through potholes with less fear - the suspension has become much more energy-intensive than on the eighth Civic . Stabilization systems also work well. For testing, we went to the empty parking lot of a hypermarket under construction. If you turn on ESP, then without any fear you can make the most serious mistakes, from the point of view of safe driving techniques: braking in turns, driving on summer tires on snow and ice... Those who are used to relying on their driving instincts can be advised to turn it off completely electronic assistants and take turns to your heart’s content, fortunately the Honda Civic 4d allows this.
It is very important that under the suspension arms of the Civic when fully loaded is 155 mm. Renault Logan has exactly the same ground clearance . During the test, we were able to drive a little on a lumpy wasteland - the summer tires did not allow us to go far, but the bottom never hit anything.
Other problems and malfunctions
Cars older than 4-5 years often suffer from swelling of the paintwork in the area of the rear arches. Bubbles may also appear along the outer contour of the rear doors and in the gutter.
On the headlights of some cars, cloudy glass appeared on the inside. Dealers replaced problematic optics under warranty. To replace burnt out low beam and headlight bulbs, you will have to remove the fender liners. To access the left headlight bulbs from above, you need to remove the battery and antifreeze reservoir. Access to the right headlight from above is a little more difficult. Fog lights in the front bumper are in great demand among night robbers. They are stolen very often. After long-term use of the car, the socket with the lamp in the brake light may become soldered. The reason is the close proximity of the lamp legs with a glass base.
Due to souring of the windshield wiper trapezoid, the wipers can live their own lives - they stop at the most inopportune moment in the most unnecessary place.
The interior of the Honda Civic 4D often creaks in winter, most often the front panel. The rear parcel shelf may creak. It is not uncommon to see a “cricket” of the glove compartment lid in the upper right corner. To eliminate sound, it is necessary to glue the lid and its counterpart on the panel with “Madeline”.
Easily washable clutch and brake pedal linings, as well as the steering wheel and gear shift knobs will tell you the actual mileage of the car. Scuffs appear after 50 - 70 thousand km.
Honda Civic 4D older than 3-5 years may experience problems with the ignition switch. First, partial snagging of the lock appears when the ignition is turned on, and eventually the key stops turning. The lock is considered non-removable, and official dealers replace the lock with a set of keys and an immobilizer. The reason for the failure is wear on the working surface of the secrets themselves inside the lock. A new lock costs about 10 - 12 thousand rubles, registration of an immobilizer will require about 5 thousand rubles.
Sometimes the immobilizer “loses” one of the keys. Trying to replace the battery in the key does not change the situation, as it has nothing to do with the immobilizer.
Some people notice a “moving” of the front door trim when the windows are raised or lowered. The reason for the “revival” is the fastening of the middle part of the door trim directly to the window frame.
Condensation may form under the roof and drain from the sun visor mountings. Condensation may cause streaks on the ceiling upholstery.
With a mileage of more than 80 - 100 thousand km, the heater motor may whistle. To eliminate noise, simply lubricate the problem unit through the hole under the sticker.
Due to blown fuses on the radio board, the backlighting of the buttons may disappear.
Summary of Honda Civic 4d
It was hard to believe from the very beginning, but the ninth generation Honda Civic is a very worthy car. Not particularly expressive on the outside, but very well designed on the inside, it combines practicality with hooliganism. The Civic has become more versatile and a compromise in the good sense of the word. However, I don’t believe that the Honda Civic can be so expensive (from 749 thousand rubles for the basic version) for objective reasons. By paying a significant amount, the client buys a piece of his image. It’s a shame that the Civic has obvious problems with its external image.
