Unusual practical ways of carrying hunting weapons

Glock 26

In any debate about compact weapons, one of the first people to remember is this barrel. This pistol is chambered for the 9x19 mm Parabellum cartridge and today is considered one of the best barrels of its family. The entire length of the pistol is only 16 cm, and the weight is a little over half a kilogram, not counting the cartridges. The magazine holds 10 rounds, not including one in the barrel.

What are tactical holsters made of?

The material used for thigh pistol holsters is specially made natural leather, textiles and plastic.

The open design leather holster allows you to quickly draw your pistol using only your fingers. This product does not have unnecessary fasteners. The leather tactical holster has a dual locking system in the form of the main and safety devices. The main advantage of a leather hip holster is its light weight.

In the manufacture of textile tactical holsters, Cordura 1000D fabric (used in the production of military uniforms) and 1000D nylon are used. As a result, a textile tactical holster has the following advantages:

  • The product can withstand high temperatures.
  • Characterized by wear resistance.
  • Has high strength.

The thigh holster, made of plastic, has a security system that prevents unauthorized seizure of the weapon. It is a special device that secures the pistol to the trigger guard. The material used for tactical holsters is high-strength plastic that is not subject to external mechanical influences.

Strong slings are provided for hip products. These holsters are equipped with a Molle fastening system that allows them to be used with any ammunition.

Colt Mustang XSP

A modification of the legendary 1911 model specifically for those who want to have this pistol with them, but do not want to flaunt it in front of people. The smaller model is much lighter compared to the original pistol and weighs only 450 grams when unloaded. The pistol magazine holds 6 rounds. The barrel length is 14 cm. The pistol can be loaded with different cartridges, but the generally accepted ammunition is .380 Auto.

Get your license!

This is more relevant for the USA - (translator's note.)

. Some absolutists claim: “No government has the right to allow me to carry my gun! I don't need permission! The Second Amendment is my license!

Sounds like someone really wants to go to jail. Like it or not, state laws may require a license to carry. We must understand that life is not always the way we want it to be. If this were so, we would not need to carry weapons at all.

Yes, getting a license can be slow and expensive, but getting caught with an illegal gun will cost a lot more time, nerves and money on lawyers. In short: If you want to wear it, do it legally!

Smith & Wesson M&P Shield

Another lightweight modification of the classic pistol model. This barrel would be a great gift for fans of the legendary Smith & Wesson M&P. Like its ancestor, the Shield also accepts 9mm and .45 caliber cartridges. At the same time, it is twice as light as the original and an order of magnitude lighter.

You are an artist and designer of your own destiny.

You are a writer: you write your own story.

The pen is in your hand, and what you choose will come out from under it.

After conversations with colleagues on this topic, it turned out that in this important matter everyone is as sophisticated as they can.

Some people prefer the classic style of transportation - on a belt (hunting weapon on the back of the shoulder with the barrel up or down).

Someone is holding it in their hands (which is inconvenient, especially when you are making your way through a brown forest that has not been cleared of dead wood, in knee-deep snow, someone, hanging the belt over their neck, holds the weapon hanging on their chest, supporting it with one or two hands.

As a rule, the free style, when the carbine is placed on the shoulder, the barrel looks up at an angle, and the hunter holds the weapon with one hand by the butt, is not practiced in winter, but in the “easiest” and most favorable conditions, in the spring, in the fields, with a good trail.

But today we will talk specifically about winter hunting, in relatively difficult conditions due to snow and invisible hummocks, holes and even swampy areas underneath.

In such conditions, if you are following a trail in difficult conditions, snow, branches in your face, and are not, for example, in a hiding place, as in a “stationary”, relatively comfortable post, the hunter’s hands should be free.

For these, as well as other, milder cases, there are developments and adaptations for special carrying of long-barreled hunting weapons.

They can be assessed in different ways, and I will say right away that none of the methods is ideal, just as, for example, the same kabura is far from unambiguously or universally suitable for all squires without exception.

Read the material “Choosing a rifled carbine for hunting up to four hundred meters”

Everywhere, one way or another, the decision comes individually - depending on the type, length and functionality of the weapon (including with a folding stock, protruding parts of the attached magazine), the physical qualities of the hunter (height, weight, ammunition, etc.) and other factors .

The main thing that ongoing improvements in this part are aimed at is freeing the hunter’s hands during transportation of weapons, with the obligatory condition of promptly (if necessary) bringing the weapon into readiness for shooting. This goal-related readiness often appears suddenly.

So, how to carry a hunting weapon directly while hunting? I will share my personal experience and the experience of my more modest colleagues in terms of sharing their own skills and improvements.

When hunting, a weapon does not imply carrying it concealed, and this already gives a wide scope for creative thought. You can carry a weapon on a belt, as is done in classic cases according to the photo report:

In this way it is convenient to transport a hunting Saiga with a folding stock, regardless of the caliber of the weapon.

From this position, the weapon can be brought to the ready for aimed shooting quite quickly, but the hands are still busy.

It should be noted that I am not the inventor of any new method of transporting weapons, and the brief previous review is shown just after this - in order to consider already proven, well-known, and popular in practice methods of carrying.

But one of the well-known methods (photo 5) gave me the idea of improving the method of carrying weapons, and at the same time freeing my own hands.

Today, unfortunately, it was not possible to find such a device in reality from popular materials such as Kydex or leather, and the conversation raised in the article can be continued if someone has the relevant experience. But, you see, the idea itself is interesting. Even if it’s simple.

The long-barreled weapon is placed on the belt in a special holster stand with the barrel forward, the hunter’s hands are free. The design protects the hunter’s body from sharp corners, and the weapon from possible sweat from the hands.

The holster clip for long guns is made of steel and securely secures the holster to the belt. This is reasonable, because if you choose the right holster, you will not feel any discomfort. The holster should fit any type of clothing, be securely attached to the belt and not dangle. This condition is also met. It should also be pressed closely to the body.

Such a holster made of Kydex or genuine leather has the so-called “first level of retention”, which allows you to grab and put away the weapon literally with one hand; the holster does not deform when snatching the weapon, and it is easy to hide it back.

Alternative materials are also possible: black cowhide, horsehide or tanned cowhide. For a summer or, to put it another way, hot transportation option, it is appropriate to make a holster for a “long barrel” from neoprene - the material from which wetsuits are made; in hot weather this is the best choice.

The clips securely secure the weapon holder (photo 5) to the belt and distribute the weight of long-barreled hunting weapons. In addition, the device has an adjustable tilt angle and planting depth. Before this, we only talked about what has already been invented and is being used in one way or another.

Time for innovation

The idea is based on commercially available tool bags and history.

Story. If you pay attention to it, it teaches you how our ancestors coped with similar tasks in past centuries.

Read the material “Weapon check: who should open the door and what you need to know”

This practice is clearly visible in Western films, which show how cowboys and mounted soldiers transported their Winchester rifles on horseback, in holster bags strapped to their saddles. You can pull the “trunk” out of this position quite quickly.

Let's consider a version of my own device adapted for hunting, the basis of which is... a tool holder. It is intended by the manufacturer to transport hand tools and equipment when carrying out a wide range of installation, electrical, plumbing and other work.

The bag is equipped with several pockets for convenient distribution of hand tools. And...perfect for carrying a hunting weapon, freeing up the hunter's hands.

Take a closer look at photo 5: wearing such a bag on your belt does not interfere with your movements. The belt is equipped with a metal holder. Soft inserts inside ensure safe use. Durable material guarantees a long service life of the bag.

The innovative holster is made from a material called 3D Polyester VentMesh, which wicks sweat from the skin, and the high-tech nylon located where the weapon meets the base of the holster has proven to be abrasion resistant.

If you add a strap to the lining with skillful hands, the holster will wrap around your thigh, and carrying a long-barreled weapon directly while hunting will become even more convenient.

Photo 8 illustrates an equipped (in my example) SKS carbine inserted into the described holder.

The angle of inclination of the barrel, as well as the height of its rise, can be changed. The holster is compact and very comfortable, it also has a variable retention level, depending on your requirements.

Read the material “Cops in the meadows: the conditions for the competition are getting worse and worse”

With such transportation, nothing interferes with walking and the hunter’s hands are free. To pull a weapon out of a holster for a “long barrel” it will take no more than 2 seconds for a person, even someone who is unfamiliar and does not have skills polished by practice. I checked this personally.

For interested parties, I also recommend studying the book by the author Aleksey Nikolaevich Ardashev about special, unusual and exotic weapons, in particular chapter 7 “Hidden weapons (hidden weapons, camouflaged and camouflaged weapons).”

Perhaps this experimental knowledge will be useful to you, among other things, to ignite the impulse of your own creative thought in the indicated direction.

Beretta Nano

One of the few semi-automatic pistols ideal for concealed carry. The weight of the weapon is 560 grams, and the barrel length is 14 cm. The main ammunition for the NanoBeretta is 9x19 Parabellum cartridges. An additional advantage is the absence of any protruding elements. Thanks to this, the gun will not catch on clothing at the right moment and will not let the owner of the barrel down.

What is the product?

A pistol holster is a special device in the form of a cover or case designed for carrying a weapon. Translated from Turkish, kubur means “quiver”, “case”. The main requirement for a pistol holster is to ensure that the shooter can draw the firearm as quickly and without delay as possible.

In the USSR, the holster became part of military equipment and was used exclusively by officers. Holsters for TT pistols and Nagan revolvers were made especially for the armed forces. Brown leather was used as material for the products.

Kimber Super Carry Pro

Among all compact pistols, this barrel is perhaps the largest. And its cost is high - about one and a half thousand dollars, while each of the other mini-pistols can be purchased for only 400-500 dollars. But this pistol is very beautiful and reliable, and therefore it fully justifies its cost.

Kahr PM9

A convenient and small pistol designed for 9x19 mm Parabellum cartridges. The magazine holds up to 6 rounds, not counting one more in the barrel. This barrel weighs only 390 grams, and its length is 13.5 cm. This pistol was originally developed as a means of self-defense, not attack.

If you are going to carry a weapon, always carry it.

The criminal is the initiator, the armed citizen is the defender. The typical criminal only arms himself when he plans to use a weapon. He chooses the time and place of the attack, and he begins the attack. Therefore, he does not need to worry about self-defense.

An armed citizen - a potential victim - does not know when he will be attacked. Therefore, we must be constantly prepared and constantly vigilant. The gun carrier learns how to choose a comfortable holster and the right size pistol, and how to dress accordingly. After a few days or weeks, it becomes a habit.

Since the defender does not know when he will be attacked, the only reasonable approach to safety is to carry it at all times.

Springfield XDs

A whole line of barrels that are sharpened for different cartridge calibers - 9 and 45 millimeters. The technical parameters of the barrel are relatively modest, but at the same time it is very reliable. Initially, this pistol had serious technical problems, which is why the manufacturer even had to recall them. After modifications, the weapon became better and more reliable.

Don't carry a weapon unless you are prepared to use it.

There is great irony in using firearms for self-defense. A study of many cases of Defensive Gun Usage (DGU) shows that in most cases, self-defense weapons accomplish their task without bloodshed. Typically, the attacker, realizing the prospect of being shot, runs away or surrenders at gunpoint.

The most important property of a weapon turns out to be its ability to scare away. The irony lies in the fact that a weapon's deterrence potential comes directly from its ability to kill.

We must understand that criminals are not afraid of weapons. They themselves are an armed subculture. And they are afraid of a determined armed man or woman pointing a weapon at them.

Criminals are predators, and the success of their craft directly depends on the ability to “read” people and recognize victims. And criminals are really good at reading body language and recognizing a victim's readiness (or not) to fight. In short, you are unlikely to be able to fool them in this.

If you decide to carry a weapon, you must be absolutely sure that you can use it. At the decisive moment, doubts and hesitations will be recognized by the criminal you are trying to keep at gunpoint.

In this case, it is very likely that the criminal will attack, take the weapon and, possibly, use it against you.

However, if the offender is aware of the defender's determination to shoot if the attacker takes another step, he will most likely not take that step.

The irony is this: someone who is willing to kill if necessary will most likely not have to do so.

Kel-Tec PF-9

Low cost and power have endowed this barrel with worldwide fame. To purchase such a weapon, you only need to pay about $330. Also, among all 9 mm barrels, this is the flattest. Its weight is 360 grams, and the barrel length is 149 mm. The magazine holds 7 rounds.
