Changing the oil in the Nissan Juke variator: volume, how and when to change

Regulations for changing the oil in the variator

Owners of a Nissan Beetle with a CVT recommend changing the oil every 40-45 thousand km. If you do not change the oil for a long time or completely refuse to change it, referring to the manufacturer’s recommendations, in this case there is a high probability of various problems that can be identified by various signs. Let's look at them in more detail below, and as for the replacement frequency of 40-45 thousand km, this regulation may vary depending on the quality, level and condition of the oil, operating characteristics and driving style. So, signs of untimely replacement:

  • The car accelerates poorly or refuses to start at all
  • Twitching during movement, as well as at the beginning of movement
  • Strong vibrations at idle
  • Difficulties in controlling the gearbox, which shifts slowly and with great effort
  • Driving continues even if the CVT selector is switched to position N

Changing the engine oil

There is a category of car owners who are absolutely not averse to changing the engine oil on their own, but, unfortunately, do not have sufficient information, so they are afraid to take any action. Of course, you can't act at random, but we will help you equip yourself with new knowledge about performing such a technical task.

Replacement frequency

First of all, let's figure out how often you will have to change the engine oil on your Nissan Juke. We recommend that you keep track of how many kilometers your “iron horse” has traveled. The fact is that the manufacturer instructs owners to change the engine oil in the engine of a Nissan Beetle after the vehicle has covered at least 5,000, but not more than 9,000 km.

Depending on how often you operate your vehicle, the frequency of such preventive measures depends. Don’t think that you will have to change the engine oil less often if your car is constantly “chained” in the garage. Due to prolonged “stagnation”, the oil also loses its characteristics, so you still have to shell out money and purchase a product so important for your car.

Which oil to choose

It is difficult to give a definite answer to the question of what oil to put in your car. The fact is that car stores offer a wide range of lubricants, many of which are ideal for your car. Before buying a liquid, we recommend that you study the information about this product, make sure that it is aimed at such brands of cars as Nissan, and that this is the oil that is poured into the engine of your car.

NISSAN 1API SL or SM 1 ILSAC motor oil is the recommended motor oil for Nissan Juke, which, first of all, you should pay attention to. If it is not on sale, then choose among other product offerings, but under one condition. Your choice of viscosity parameters of the motor oil should be focused on 5W-30. If you cannot meet this requirement, do not worry, contact a store consultant for help, he will be able to offer you an excellent analogue that practically corresponds to the parameters of the original Nissan engine oil. Don’t repeat the mistakes of illiterate car owners who pour in the cheapest oil, not paying attention to whether it is suitable for that brand of car or not. Love your car, don't skimp on its technical condition.

How much to fill

Automotive stores sell oil in cans of various sizes. Do not rush to purchase an excessively large amount of oil so that the excess does not sit idle in your garage for a long time. The manufacturer guides us on how much oil is needed for a Nissan engine. Feel free to purchase a five-liter canister, since you will need to pour in about 4.3 liters if you additionally decide to replace the oil filter. If you think that your engine does not need to replace the filter, then you will need 200 g less oil fluid.

Selection of materials for work

To ensure your work progresses, prepare the necessary tools that will allow you to avoid serious problems. In particular, to change the oil on your favorite Beetle you will need:

  • new oil;
  • new filter (preferably);
  • rags;
  • container for draining waste;
  • jack (if it is not possible to drive the car into a hole);
  • funnel (to facilitate pouring into a narrow hole);
  • keys;
  • screwdrivers.

Replacement Regulations

Initially, prepare your car for a procedure such as changing engine oil on a Nissan Beetle. To do this, start the car engine and let it idle for ten minutes. The engine will warm up and the procedure will be much easier. Now drive your car into the hole or use a jack to raise it. Unscrew the filler plug, and then the drain plug, from which waste will immediately flow.

Timing for oil changes in Nissan automatic transmissions

Changing the automatic transmission oil on a Nissan Zhuk, according to the manufacturer's manual, is not required. The original lubricant poured in at the factory is sufficient for the entire service life of the machine. However, given the characteristics of our roads and climate, periodic changes of lubricant are necessary every 45-60 thousand kilometers.

According to the regulations, every 15,000 km it is necessary to check the fluid level in the variator to avoid the appearance of some negative aspects.

Signs that replacement is needed:

  • car slip;
  • the presence of vibrations, tapping and noise in the box;
  • reduction in engine power;
  • the transmission's response to driver movements worsens.

If there is not enough oil in the Nissan Juke automatic transmission or it has expired:

  • the valve body plunger and channels become clogged with particles, causing oil deficiency;
  • the temperature rises and the discs of the box wear out due to friction;
  • the clutch drum, pistons and discs overheat and burn out;
  • The hydraulic unit wears out.

The lubricant filling volume is 3 liters. This is exactly how much is needed to prevent oil starvation of the transmission on the Beetle and renew the fluid in it.

When to change and what kind of oil to fill in Nissan Beetle

The oil change interval for the Nissan Beetle is 15,000 km. Taking into account difficult operating conditions (long idling, frequent trips over short distances, dust, etc.), the oil can be changed more often - at 10,000 km or more. Along with the oil, the oil filter is also changed.

The oil filling volume in the 1.6 MR16DDT engine is 4.5 liters of new oil including the oil filter and 4.3 without it.

We recommend original Nissan engine oil or equivalent API quality - SL or SM; ILSAC quality - GF-3 and GF-4; ACEA quality - A1/B1, A3/B4, A5/B5, C2 or C3. In terms of viscosity, SAE 5W30 or SAE 5W40 oil is preferable, but this parameter may differ depending on the temperature range of the region in which the car is driven.

Practical advice on choosing oil for automatic transmission Nissan Juke

Cars of this brand are equipped with Jatco CVTs designed for 120-200 thousand kilometers. The full resource is developed subject to timely and correct maintenance of the vehicle. An important role is played by replacing and replenishing transmission lubricant.

For the Nissan Beetle CVT gearbox, the lack of working fluid is disastrous, since the design includes many moving parts. Poor quality and untimely processing leads to disruption of the entire unit. In addition, a correctly selected brand prevents the elements of the box from slipping.

Original oil

The lubricant recommended by the manufacturer for the Nissan variator is available in two types of packaging with a gradual transition to a new version with a handle and corresponding markings (volume - 5 liters). The table shows the components included in the standard Juke transmission service kit.

The procedure for checking the fluid in the Nissan Zhuk variator

1. Since the fluid should be 50-80 C before checking the level, to do this you need to drive around the city. It will take approximately 10 minutes for the fluid in the variator to warm up to 50-80 C at an ambient temperature of 20 C.

2. After this, you need to place the car on level ground. And apply the parking brake.

3. With the engine running at idle, pressing the brake pedal, move the selector lever through all positions.

4. Next, open the hood and look for the dipstick, and then remove it from the pipe. The dipstick is located between the battery and the engine. Figure 1 shows what it looks like. To remove it, you need to press the latch and release.

5. Next, the verification procedure is as follows. It is necessary to take fiber-free paper (rags cannot be used!). Wipe the dipstick. Insert the dipstick by turning it 180 degrees from the original installation position and push it all the way into the pipe. Then you need to move the selector lever to position P or N and make sure that the fluid level is within the specified range. Figure 2 shows the minimum liquid level point.

If you are going to purchase original Nissan oil, keep in mind that the company has developed an effective method of protection against counterfeits. Each canister of original oil is equipped with a unique code, which is covered with a protective film. Having erased the protection, you can check the code on the nissan.ru website and make sure that you are pouring high-quality original oil into your car. Nissan oil cans will be marked with a sticker with a code: 10W40, 5W40, 5W30, 0W30,0W20.

Level check

Check the oil level on a horizontally mounted vehicle before starting the engine. If the engine has already been started, stop it and wait 10 minutes before starting the test.

1. Remove the oil dipstick and wipe it dry.

2. Insert the oil dipstick, remove it again and make sure the oil level is within the range shown in the figure.

3. If the oil level is outside the specified range, correct it.

Assessing the appearance of the oil

Check the oil for whitishness or severe contamination.

If the oil has acquired a whitish color, then there is a high probability that coolant has entered the oil. Repair or replace faulty parts.

Replacement

• Be careful not to burn yourself (the oil may be hot). • Prolonged and repeated contact with used motor oil can cause skin cancer; Direct contact with used oil must be avoided. If this does occur, thoroughly wash the affected area of skin with soap or hand cleanser as soon as possible.

Nissan Juke › Logbook › Oil change.

Well, my first oil change.

All according to plan. A car comes to me every 10 thousand. underwent maintenance at the off-service.

What is needed to change the oil on a Nissan Juke with a naturally-aspirated HR16DE engine of 117 hp:

— oil filter Nissan 15208-9F60A — washer for the drain plug Nissan 11026-01M02 — and the oil itself.

About the oil:

What suits us can be seen here. It seems that the optimal approval for us is Renault RN0700, but despite this, a lot of oils suit us. In terms of quantity, 4 liters will be enough. But they officially say 4.1 - 4.3l. oils They filled me with 4 liters. The litrushka was left unpacked.

Now the mileage is 40 thousand. and it's time to change the oil again. Purchased:
1.
Oil Motul 8100 X-clean FE 5W-30 - 4+1l.
(1589 UAH) 2.
Original oil filter (139 UAH)
3.
Original washer for the drain plug (10 UAH)

The work was carried out at Nissan Zaporozhye. I was very pleased with the service, well done guys. The following was done:
1.
Oil change
2.
Chassis diagnostics
3.
Tightening the generator-air conditioning belt
4.
Replacing the cage nuts to protect the engine (several nuts soured and the bolts in them broke).

I was also pleased that oil change maintenance for out-of-warranty Nissan vehicles costs only 1,100 UAH. This is the original oil with filters. With my oil it cost me about 1800 UAH. Next time I’ll think about whether it’s worth worrying about, or just go and have everything done by the officials.

There was a small question about the squeaking of the belt, but I will create a separate post about it. There are no questions about the running. Let's move on...

Consequences of a lack and excess of oil in a Nissan variator

The variator can function fully only when the oil level meets the requirements of technical regulations. Any deviations in the direction of overfilling or underfilling can cause the occurrence and development of malfunctions of the box itself and difficulties in driving the car.

Underfilling or overfilling transmission fluid is highly undesirable.

Nissan variator oil dipstick diagram

Consequences of underfilling

If there is insufficient oil in the box, metal shavings begin to form due to excessive friction of the parts. The oil pump becomes clogged, which easily leads to failure of both the pump itself and the variator. These problems can arise several years later when the warranty expires, but it is not uncommon for the transmission to need to be replaced within a couple of months after purchasing the car.

If, after checking, it is discovered that the oil does not reach the minimum permissible mark, it is necessary to urgently add the required amount, and not put the problem on the back burner. Delaying the time to solve the problem leads to wear of parts and breakdown of the variator, the replacement of which is expensive. However, you need to add it very carefully, since you cannot allow the oil to overflow.

Plug instead of the Nissan variator dipstick

Consequences of overflow

Even exceeding the maximum permissible level by one millimeter can cause many problems. During operation, the transmission fluid foams. This is the reason for the instability of revolutions (drop/increase) in mode D, the car starts moving with strong jerks.

Exceeding the oil level in the variator is not always a consequence of oil overflow. Often it rises due to antifreeze entering from a damaged radiator. This is easy to determine because the liquid changes color.

Foamed oil in the variator

The overflow problem can be solved quickly and easily. To do this, you need to pump out the excess with a syringe connected to a dropper hose, which is inserted into the variator.

Final Recommendations

Timely change of oil in the variator can protect you from many problems with the gearbox. However, you need to decide on such a step carefully, weighing all the pros and cons along the way. If replacing transmission fluid seems too complicated a task, the best solution would be to turn to professionals.
