Mazda CX 5 second generation: increased level of comfort for the same price


The compact Japanese crossover Mazda CX-5 has been produced since 2011 and is sold in the markets of various countries, including Russia. Since 2017, the second generation of SUVs has been sold in our country (it was presented to the public at the auto show in November 2016). Let's evaluate the updated model. How “premium” has the Mazda CX-5 become (what options did it receive)? How competitive? How is it different from the first generation and from the restyled version of the first generation (2014-2016)? The answers to these questions are presented in this review of the 2021 Mazda CX-5.

Overview of changes

Let's compare the main characteristics of the first and second generation Mazda CX-5 crossovers: how significant the innovations turned out to be.

Main changes

The new 2021 Mazda CX 5 received the same platform and the same wheelbase as its predecessor. Other design characteristics have changed.

  1. The suspension has been modernized: the shock absorbers have softer springs, pistons with a larger diameter and silent blocks filled with liquid (prevent vibration). The ride of the car has become much softer.
  2. The rigidity of the body has been increased (due to the use of ultra-strong steel).
  3. A set of new safety systems has improved the driving characteristics of the Mazda CX-5: handling, effective control when cornering (less effort required).
  4. Improved aerodynamics have reduced road noise by a remarkable 10%. Also, high noise insulation is provided by:
  • double side door trim,
  • pasted wheel arches,
  • stabilizer built into the suspension with the best characteristics,
  • laminated double glass front doors,
  • steel body panels designed to eliminate vibration,
  • trunk lined with soft pile material (to reduce noise).

Thus, the Mazda CX-5 has lost its main drawback and is still very competitive.

New modifications

The CX-5 crossover is equipped with the same gasoline engines, 150-horsepower and 194-horsepower in top trim levels.

But the manufacturer assured that the CX-5 line of power units has improved performance characteristics:

  • faster start (acceleration in 9-10 seconds),
  • less fuel consumption (5.9-7.2 liters per 100 km).

Modifications with a 175-horsepower diesel engine are no longer produced (due to low demand and high prices: the CX-5 crossover with a diesel engine turned out to be more expensive than the top versions).

All modifications of the new generation Mazda CX-5 crossover are equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission, with the exception of the base one (Drive with “mechanics”).

More affordable trim levels are front-wheel drive. But the full version is available optionally (according to the official website).

Exterior: differences between the new product and its predecessor

The head optics of the Mazda CX-5 received a more elongated, narrowed shape - due to this detail, the crossover began to look more like the Mazda 6 sedan. Daytime running lights stretched along the top line of the headlights and inside, around the lenses of the head optics. The headlights began to look more expressive (in comparison with the previous generation Mazda CX-5): along the bottom line they are partially emphasized by a chrome edging, still extending from the radiator grille. But now the edging has become wider and more noticeable. By the way, instead of the “steel” striped grille, it now has a black mesh insert. There is now nothing to distract attention from the chrome V-shaped lower stripe. The lines along the hood have become sharper and more strict, matching the updated radiator grille.

Instead of large air intakes on the sides (under the head optics), narrow stripes of foglights appeared. As before, there is a black plastic body kit running along the bottom, but a little more compact (which made it possible to reduce the length of the car by 0.5 cm).

The Mazda CX-5 crossover has retained the power structure of the body, but its geometry has changed. The designers played with the side lines and edges of the car, giving stateliness and grace to the compact crossover.

On the previous model, the top line ran along the entire body, from the head optics to the rear. Now the line, starting pointed, runs under the mirrors along the front door and “goes down” to the wheel arches, “blurring” (expanding and losing its sharpness) under the rear door handle. And a new sharp line appears at the edge of the rear window and “goes” to the rear headlights. The bottom line, on the contrary, “turned” from an arcuate line into a wide, strictly straight edge.

Another small change in the side of the CX-5 affected the glass: the rear door glass was much wider than steel.

In keeping with the new styling of the 2021 Mazda CX 5, there are more bulges and lines at the rear. The headlights, like the head optics, have become narrower and more elongated. A new spoiler has appeared above the rear window: it is more “pressed” to the glass than the previous one (and this was done to improve the aerodynamic properties of the CX-5).

The rear bumper has also changed slightly: it is visually steel due to the narrowing and lengthening of the once rectangular fog lights.

Now the Mazda CX-5 has begun to look like other updated Mazda cars. Not all car enthusiasts “liked” such modifications: ardent fans prefer the old exterior of the Mazda CX-5.

Dimensions

The five-seater Japanese crossover is classified as compact; the dimensions of the Mazda CX-5 2017 indicate that it belongs to this class:

  • length is 4.55 m (compared to the previous generation CX-5 decreased by 1 cm),
  • width – 1.84 m,
  • height – 1.68 (1 cm higher),
  • wheelbase – 2.7 m,
  • weight in the base is 1505 kg, in the maximum configuration - 1659 kg.

The trunk of the CX-5 has increased by 74 liters - 477 liters, the volume can be increased to 1620 by folding the back rows of the rear row (folding in proportions 4:2:4).

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 is equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels. 19R available as an option. Ground clearance – 210-215 mm.

Changes in the cabin

Inside, the Mazda CX 5 2021 new has also changed:

  • The ergonomics of the car have been improved (the controls are intuitive, everything is in its place),
  • driver and passenger seats have been updated,
  • visibility has improved in the back row (the designers moved the jumper closer to the luggage compartment, the third glass has significantly decreased in size),
  • the handles on the inside of the doors have become smooth and have acquired soft upholstery; the perimeter is decorated with decorative inserts “like wood” or aluminum.

There are only two color options available: black (with fabric or leather upholstery) and cream leather. You will have to pay extra for decoration in other colors.

Controls

The main innovation in the interior of the CX-5 is a projector: it displays important information directly on the windshield, in front of the driver’s eyes (hints and information about the situation on the road, you can also access radio stations through a mobile device)

For the sake of convenience, engineers modified the central panel and steering wheel. Now in front of the driver there is a new three-spoke steering wheel, leather-trimmed, heated, with silver decorative inserts. The position of the buttons has changed, but the shape of the wheel remains the same.

A 7-inch TouchScreen, reminiscent of a tablet, was installed on the front panel (previously the touch screen was mounted inside the panel, it did not rise above it). Below the screen is the audio system control panel - a powerful proprietary Bose system with noise cancelers (providing high-quality surround sound).

Under the audio system there is an emergency parking button (between the air supply holes), an airbag control panel, a passenger boarding indicator, control buttons for heating the front row seats. By the way, in the predecessor these buttons were located much lower.

The panel has a button for a unique Start-Stop system, which turns off and restarts the engine to save fuel.

In the Mazda CX-5, the gearshift knob has moved up, and the starter button has also moved to a more visible place. The gearbox selector was placed a little higher - “manual” by 0.4 cm, “automatic” by 0.6 cm. The control panel for dual-zone climate control is located at the lever. The panel took on a different shape, rounded at the corners, the central round ring was also moved - everything else is the same.

Near the gear lever there are connectors for charging mobile devices: USB and 12V. A round rotating “washer” under the gearshift knob is for selecting menu items on the TouchScreen. There are also drive control buttons and suspension operating mode selection buttons. Between the seats there is an armrest with cup holders.

The instrument panel in the Mazda CX-5 has remained virtually unchanged: it contains the same speedometer, tachometer and a new 4.6-inch color display.

Armchairs

The seats in the Mazda CX-5 have become more streamlined and comfortable: now you can enjoy long trips without feeling tired. In the front seats, large bolsters on the sides provide effective back support; in the rear seats, the fit has been improved (anatomical shape), they are equipped with adjustment (there are two options for the position of the backrest - two different tilt angles). Heating is available only for an additional fee.

Time-tested quality

The CX-5 has more than once been one of the top three cars with the highest residual value after three to five years of operation. The impeccable quality of metal and paintwork, a reliable engine and main parts - all this contributes to the fact that, with proper care, the machine remains in good technical condition for many years.

It is also noteworthy that owners have no problems servicing Mazda in Russia. The network of official dealer centers extends throughout the country, from Moscow to Vladivostok.

Available configurations and prices

To the usual configurations of the Mazda CX-5, a new one has been added - Executive. In this version of the Mazda CX-5, design engineers tried to achieve a balance of beauty, strength and sophistication (all-round visibility, leather interior trim, high handling, the latest technology).

  • In all trim levels of the second generation Mazda CX-5 - Drive, Active, Supreme, Executive - new safety systems have appeared: stabilization, anti-lock, calling emergency services and the proprietary GVC electronic system, already tested on Mazda 3 and Mazda 6 (reduces engine traction when turning , improving the responsiveness of the steering wheel, relieving the braking system of unnecessary loads). The auto-braking system has been transformed, now it is able to recognize danger not at 10 m, but at 100, the viewing angle has also increased (from 27 to 52 degrees) and operating speed (from 30 to 80 km/h). The side mirrors automatically fold in if an obstacle occurs. The rest - namely the lane tracking system and blind spot monitoring, camera and parking sensors - are available only for an additional fee in the initial and middle versions.

  • The Mazda CX-5 now has options typical for premium cars (electric trunk, LED headlights as standard). The database includes an extensive list of equipment (heated mirrors, electric windows, on-board computer, keyless entry, six airbags, stabilizer, off-road mode, lift assist). The CX-5 is equipped in the standard version with “mechanics” and front-wheel drive, but automatic transmission and 4WD are optionally available. Climate control and rain sensors, security systems and cruise control are available in the next version - Active. The flagship Supreme has all-wheel drive and AT, leather interior, power accessories, 19-inch wheels. A sunroof or panoramic roof can be purchased for an additional fee.

I bought a Mazda CX 5 last year. The car is not new - it was released in 2013. It had driven 127 thousand kilometers before me and belonged to two owners. It is noticeable from the car that it was used in harsh conditions - there are chips on the plastic, scratches on the door trim and ceiling. The Mazda was probably used to transport construction materials. Before this car, I gave preference to VAG-group models, but after talking with avid Mazda drivers, I realized that it was time to try out the Japanese brainchild. My wife was determined to buy a crossover, which our family had never had before, so we opted for the CX 5. Due to the fact that the car had not been treated with care, it was sold at a price lower than the market price by 300 thousand. We decided to buy and were not disappointed. The interior was completely restored - I spent only 50 thousand, replaced all lubricants, cleaned the air conditioning system, carried out minor repairs to the chassis, and as a result I received a very interesting specimen. The car is presented in the maximum configuration, so it has many useful options, such as: lane control, blind spot monitoring, rain sensor, light sensor, etc. All options work flawlessly. There are no complaints about the engine, the all-wheel drive does not fail. So I'm happy with the choice. The next car I will buy will definitely be from the updated CX line.

A couple of months ago I bought a Mazda CX 5. I bought the car from an official dealer. It cost me 2 million rubles, but I don’t regret the money spent. The car is reliable, passable, comfortable. I drove it one and a half thousand kilometers in a quiet mode, during which time no problems arose. The CX 5 has an elegant appearance and a cozy interior. The flat floor in the trunk allows you to create a large sleeping area when folding the rear seat backs. The package includes a bunch of different “goodies”, I haven’t managed to figure them all out yet. I would like to pay special attention to the head optics: because I have poor eyesight, it’s difficult for me to choose a car that will provide excellent visibility at any time of the day. Fortunately, Mazda turned out to be the ideal option. You can drive it in both fog and rain without fear.

I don’t know what other owners like about the Mazda; I don’t like it at all. I was the owner of a car produced in 2014. two years. During this time, I made several unpleasant conclusions: – the CX 5 has terrible sound insulation (or maybe even a complete lack of it), – it is difficult to turn into corners (heels, it’s even scary when there’s a gust of wind), – it accelerates slowly (the feeling that the car is for pensioners - very imposing, slow), although the engine has 150 hp. – an unheated machine kicks in the winter, – unreasonable gorging on oil and gasoline. By the way, the computer is lying about average fuel consumption. It says 8.5-9.1 in the city, but in reality it’s 11.2-13.0 liters per 100 km. I also noticed that on 95 gasoline the car has difficulty picking up speed. You can still drive the 100th.

Now, if it weren’t for the engine wedge, which the car caught at 110 thousand kilometers, I would have been satisfied with Mazda. The problem arose after the next maintenance. Moreover, maintenance was regularly carried out at official dealers. What caused the wedge is not clear, until that moment it worked like a clock. After contacting the officials, the engine was completely replaced, but that didn’t last long: after 33 thousand, the Check light came on. As a result of several diagnostics, the cause of activation of this error was not identified. The “check” light came on while reversing, after disengaging the rear drive, and during prolonged idling. At the same time, there was always enough oil in the engine to create the necessary pressure inside the system. Although there were suspicions that the Mazda Original Oil used was not the original at all. Having suffered with the car for about a couple of months after discovering the error, I handed it over via Trade-In, so its further fate is unknown to me. Among the advantages, I will note the durable body and large capacity of the car, but I will not recommend it.

Competitive advantages

Mazda CX-5 left far behind all its competitors, having made its presence known back in 2012. The new model stood out from its classmates with the latest proprietary technologies, efficiency and environmental friendliness. And now it stands out.

Mazda design engineers have rid the popular crossover of its main drawback - low noise insulation. And they didn’t just get rid of it, but made the CX-5 one of the best cars: in terms of acoustic comfort, the 2021 CX-5 outperforms even the premium BMW X3, Audio Q3 and Jaguar F Pace.

The comfort level of the Mazda CX-5 has also grown - now the compact Japanese crossover is one of the best in its class in terms of comfort. And in terms of fuel consumption (from 6.1 liters per hundred)!

But the Mazda CX 5 2011-2015 also has disadvantages. available: owners note low noise insulation, which was improved after the first restyling of the model. The database does not have rain and light sensors, automatic door locks, an emergency braking system and many other already familiar options (you will have to pay about 80 thousand for them and another 45 thousand if you need an electric trunk or a heated steering wheel). The cost of more expensive packages reaches up to 190 thousand.

Not sure if Mazda CX 5 2012-2015 is worth it. the money for which it is sold on the secondary Russian market? Costs! The car, in comparison with its competitors, matches the quality and price. Moreover, it is reliable. With proper maintenance (oil change every 15 thousand km, replacement of valve cover gaskets, ignition coils), crossovers produced in 2012-2015 will serve their owners for many years.

In August 2008, at the Moscow International Motor Show, Mazda for the first time presented the Kazamai concept car, which began to embody new ideas of the KODO concept - “Soul in Motion”. The transmission, as in the 2014 Mazda CX 5, remains 6-speed: manual or hydromechanical automatic. The combination includes engines from the SkyActiv line: a 2-liter petrol with a power of 150 hp. and 2.5 liters - already 192 hp. And, as before, the 2015 Mazda CX-5 can be had with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

Time does not stand still, global changes were brewing and last fall the manufacturer introduced the second generation of the popular SUV. The 2021 Mazda CX 5, the new version, is built on the same base as the previous generation: to a large extent, the power units, chassis and interior remain unchanged, the same wheelbase (2700 mm) and the power frame of the body. The 2016 Mazda CX 5 has completely new all external body panels (the length of the car has been reduced by 0.5 cm), new electronic components, as well as more than a thousand small improvements and additional kilograms of sound insulation. For the Russian market, the Mazda CX 5 is assembled at a plant in Vladivostok.

Equipment

The Mazda CX-5 2021 equipment list includes a multifunction steering wheel, air conditioning, headlight washers, electric mirrors, heated front seats. front and side airbags, curtain airbags, ABS, stabilization system, tire pressure monitoring and ERA-GLONASS emergency call device, as well as the G-Vectoring Control system, which changes engine thrust when turning. Additional options include blind spot monitoring and lane tracking systems, parking sensors with a rear view camera, and a road sign recognition system.

Interior

The interior of the C X 5 from 17 '17 received a new three-spoke steering wheel, a lowered front panel with a 7-inch multimedia system screen and improved ergonomics, “a la” Mazda 6, soft plastic trim and modern security systems. Moreover, the gearbox selector is located higher, and the engine start button has been moved into view.

Comfortable front seats have pronounced lateral support, and the rear seats have an adjustable backrest and heating.

The level of acoustic comfort of the new crossover is head and shoulders above the previous version. The amount of soundproofing materials has increased by almost a hundredweight! Thus, the sound insulation of the ceiling, floor, rear doors, luggage compartment and wheel arches has been improved. Front and side windows of increased thickness are used. The manufacturer claims that the noise level in the 2021 CX-5 is currently at the level of such premium brands as Jaguar, Audi and BMW.

Aerodynamic noise that annoyed owners of the first generation Mazda C X 5 is reduced in the new model by 1.3 dB. All doors, including the fifth, have double seals. And the protruding windshield wipers were covered with the edge of the hood.
