Second generation D3, 2002-2009

In addition to the control panel, the second important interface between the system and the person is the monitor. In the new MMI, Audi relied on a large TFT display with a diagonal of 7 inches; it is ergonomically located high up in the center console. The very high resolution of 800 x 480 pixels and LED backlighting make the image on the monitor extremely clear and contrasty - even in bright lighting, colors look saturated against a black background. The new central computer, information electronics control unit 1 J794, takes over the functions previously distributed among six separate control units. Additional functions such as the SD card reader and the hard disk installed in the MMI Navigation plus turn the control unit into a real high-tech product. The second new device is the Radio R control unit. It combines the tuner and audio functions that were previously divided between three control units. Thus, the total number of control units in the MOST system has been reduced. Although the 3rd generation MMI offers more functions and equipment options, the system requires less space and even saves 4 kg in weight when fully equipped.
