Accuracy International AW50 .50 caliber sniper rifle

Accuracy International AW50 - large-caliber sniper rifle made in Great Britain

This rifle was developed by the British in the late 90s based on the Accuracy International AW (Arctic Warfare) rifle.

The main customers were the UK Ministry of Defense and the Australian Armed Forces. The new sniper rifle entered service in 2002. The main feature of the new Accuracy International AW50 is the .50 BMG cartridge used.

When designing a sniper rifle, much attention was paid to maximum shooting accuracy, interchangeability of parts, and ergonomics. During tests of the Accuracy International AW50, which lasted two years, the designers once again improved this model, reducing its weight.

The operating principle of the rifle is a longitudinally sliding bolt. The general layout and shape of the stock of the AW50 is the same as that of the AW rifle. The bipod and the support with the butt have changed. The barrel was equipped with a muzzle brake and a massive muzzle sleeve. For more efficient cooling and weight reduction, there are valleys on the outside of the barrel.

The supporting rail was expanded in the area of the receiver, which made the structure more rigid. The massive receiver has thick walls to withstand the heavy loads of .50 BMG ammunition and, thanks to its relatively larger size than the original AW series, accommodates a newly designed 30mm bolt stem. The receiver is installed on the weapon bus in the same way as on the original AW series.

The rifle's interchangeable magazine holds 5 rounds.

Performance characteristics

Length: 1350 mm Length with stock folded: 1105 mm Barrel length: 690 mm Ammunition: .50 BMG Muzzle velocity: 925 m/s Sighting range: 1500 m Weight without bipod and magazine: 13.5 kg Weight with bipod: 15 kg

The rifle can be equipped with any optical and electron-optical sights, thanks to the presence of a Picatinny rail on the top of the receiver. It is worth noting that the designers do not provide for equipping the Accuracy International AW50 with mechanical sighting devices.

Improvements to the Accuracy International AW50 sniper rifle continue. Today we know about a modification - AW50F, which is an AW50 rifle with a folding stock. Some rifle samples received titanium tires instead of aluminum ones; such modifications are designated “T”.

Also, the designers intend to equip this weapon with a removable silencer. Although, most likely, the muffler will act as a flame arrester, and the sound level will be reduced only enough so as not to create sharp pain in the shooter.

The Accuracy International AW50 sniper rifle is in service with special forces units of the armies of Great Britain and Australia. In limited quantities, these weapons are supplied to the armed forces of other countries: Germany, Portugal, Ireland, Thailand, Malta and South Korea. Possessing high accuracy of fire, the AW50 has become a commercially successful rifle, despite its rather high cost.

The Esoteric SA-50 is an example of a universal source with modern architecture.:) It is, in fact, three independent devices in one case: a transport, a DAC, and, thanks to the presence of an output level regulator, a preamplifier with three digital inputs. Via coaxial and optical, the signal can be received with a resolution of up to 24 bit/192 kHz, and via USB - up to 16 bit/48 kHz. When connected to a computer, Windows detects the player as a USB Audio DAC. Conversion is carried out by 32-bit Asahi Kasei AK4392 DACs, separate for each channel. The path also contains a signal processor, providing the player owner with a wide range of configurations. When playing SACD, the DSD stream can be converted directly to analogue or to 32-bit PCM with a sampling rate of 88.2 or 176.4 kHz. Or vice versa - from PCM to DSD with subsequent decoding to analog. In addition, for a digital signal, both from transport and from any input, it is possible to increase the sampling frequency by two, four times and up to the DSD level. Finally, depending on the musical genre and personal preference, you can choose the type of digital filter with different cutoff slopes. The player also has an input for an external clock generator - it is useful if you need to synchronize the operation of several digital devices in a single system. Judging by the narrow end of the loader, it is difficult to imagine that such a serious transport is installed in the SA-50. The VOSP (Vertically-aligned Optical Stability Platform) principle combines the convenience of front loading and the uncompromising nature of the top. After the platform slides in, a massive clamp is lowered onto the disk, smoothing out instantaneous speed fluctuations. The absolutely rigid structure on an 8mm steel chassis is designed in such a way that the beam of the laser head is always perpendicular to the surface of the disc and is focused exactly in the center of the pits. All these measures are aimed at reducing reading errors that lead to distortions. The analog stages also support dual-mono configurations, resulting in better channel separation. The RCA and XLR outputs are switchable, and the unused connector is blocked to avoid interference. But if necessary, you can output a signal to both connectors. The body is covered with thick aluminum panels. The player's weight is 17.2 kg. The price of a new one was $5800. Brought from the USA, power supply switched to Europe 230V. Available with original instructions, remote control (in perfect condition), original triple packaging. The only drawback is two small damages on the upper edge of the front panel, caused by a careless American, but they do not affect the sound and over time I even forgot about them . See photo.

Sniper rifle Steyr-Mannlicher SSG 04 (Austria)

The SSG 04 rifle (ScharfSchützen-Gewehr 04 - sniper rifle model 2004) was developed and produced since 2004 by the famous Austrian company Steyr-Mannlicher AG. It was created in addition to the very popular, but no longer very “fashionable” and “modern” rifle SSG 69 of the same company. The SSG04 rifle is based on the SBS 96 system, developed by Steyr-Mannlicher in the mid-1990s for a new line of hunting and sporting rifles. Currently, SSG 04 rifles are already in service with a number of security services and police forces in European countries. When using appropriate ammunition, SSG 04 rifles consistently provide accuracy of less than one arc minute at practical firing ranges.

The Steyr-Mannlicher SSG 04 sniper rifle has a longitudinally sliding rotary bolt with four lugs located in pairs in front of the bolt. High-precision barrels are made using cold rotational forging and are equipped with a muzzle brake. The trigger mechanism is adjustable, release without warning. The cartridges are fed from detachable box magazines. The rifle stock is made of impact-resistant polymer and has a height-adjustable butt comb and butt plate. The rifle does not have open sights; a Picatinny rail type guide is installed on the receiver, allowing for quick and accurate installation of any optical and night sights on the appropriate mounts.

Heckler und Koch MSG90 sniper rifle (Germany)

The MSG-90 rifle was developed by the German company Heckler-Koch in 1987 specifically as an army sniper weapon based on the HK PSG-1 police rifle. The MSG-90 rifle was lightened by almost 2 kilograms, had a barrel shortened by 5 cm (also with polygonal rifling), a modified and somewhat lightweight plastic stock with an adjustable butt. At the bottom of the fore-end there is a guide for attaching a detachable folding bipod, the mountings for optics are made in accordance with NATO standards, and the rifle is standardly equipped with a 10X optical sight, providing an effective firing range of up to 1000 meters. In addition, unlike the PSG-1, the body of the trigger mechanism of the MSG-90 is made of plastic, integral with the pistol grip. The trigger is adjustable, the trigger force is about 1.5 kg. The rifle has swivels for attaching a rifle sling.

In the early to mid-1990s, Heckler-Koch modified the MSG-90 rifle to participate in the DMR (Designated Marksman Rifle) competition held by the US Department of Defense. As a result, a modernized sniper rifle MSG-90A1 was released, which differed from the MSG-90 in a number of features. Firstly, the MSG-90A1 received fixed sighting devices - a front sight in a ring-shaped front sight and an adjustable rear sight from the NK 21 machine gun, designed for ranges from 100 to 1200 meters. Secondly, the muzzle of the barrel was equipped with a new flash suppressor, making it possible to install a shot silencer. A cartridge deflector appeared behind the window for ejecting cartridges, making it possible to fire from the left shoulder. The safety lever has also become double-sided. Otherwise, the MSG-90A1 is no different from the prototype.
