The Marlin Camp Carbine
is an American civilian light self-loading carbine in 9x19mm Luger or .45 ACP (11.43x25mm) caliber, produced by Marlin Firearms from 1985 to 1999.

Story

The Marlin Camp Carbine was created in an era when handgun cartridges were cheap and readily available in the United States. It was positioned as a weapon for guarding a hunting camp and hunting small game. Its characteristic feature is the use of magazines compatible with pistols of popular models for ammunition supply, as a tribute to the long-standing American tradition of using a carbine and a pistol or revolver unified by the ammunition used, dating back to the times of the “Wild West” and rifles with lever reloading chambered for revolver cartridges. It owes its characteristic appearance to this feature, with a long magazine receptacle bent back in front of the trigger guard.

Device

In design, principle of operation, characteristics and appearance, the Camp Carbine is largely reminiscent of a submachine gun - it was even considered together with this type of weapon in Alexander Zhuk’s monograph “Rifles and Pistols”. The only difference is that it is deprived of the ability to fire in bursts.

The automatic weapon uses the recoil energy of the free bolt for reloading; the shot is fired from a closed bolt thanks to the trigger mechanism. The receiver of the carbine is made of steel; The trigger box, combined with the trigger guard and the magazine receiving neck, is made of impact-resistant polymer. Their connection is ensured by two transverse pins. The stock is rifle-type with a semi-pistol neck, birch, finished in walnut. Sights consist of a fixed front sight in a ring-shaped sight at the end of the barrel and a stepped sight adjustable in two planes with an open rear sight. An optical sight can be installed on a proprietary bracket offered as an additional accessory.

Modification of the 45 caliber Camp 45

accepts, in addition to the standard ones, most magazines on the market for the Colt M1911 pistol with 7 rounds, and the 9 mm
Camp 9
accepts 12-round magazines (10-round magazines since 1994, after the introduction of the so-called Assault Weapon Ban) for the Smith & Wesson Model 59 and M659. This allows you to conveniently use it in tandem with a corresponding pistol. The magazine installed on the weapon is completely hidden inside the receiving neck. Also, until 1989, a proprietary 20-round magazine was offered for the 9-mm version. On the secondary market you can find other versions of stores of various capacities, including drum ones, which are a modified version of the store for the Finnish “Suomi”.

The weapon is equipped with an extensive set of safety devices and mechanisms that increase the convenience and safety of handling it. A non-automatic safety in the form of a flag is located in the front part of the trigger guard; when the weapon is put on safety (rear position of the lever), the trigger mechanism is completely blocked. In addition, there is an automatic safety device that prevents firing when the magazine is open, and an indicator of the presence of a cartridge in the chamber - a flag with a red warning mark that extends from the bolt through the window for ejecting cartridges. The carbine has an automatic bolt stop that holds the bolt open after the last round in the magazine has been fired. It can also be turned on manually if, while holding the bolt open, move the slider located on the left side of the magazine neck all the way up. In both cases, to turn off the delay, you must pull the shutter all the way back and release it, after which it will move to the extreme forward position; if the delay was triggered automatically, before doing so it is necessary to either unlock the empty magazine or replace it with a full one; with an empty magazine attached to the weapon, the bolt will not close.

Installation and connection

The Inspector Marlin A7L comes with a convenient and, most importantly, reliable bracket for installing the device on the windshield of a car. Bracket with vacuum suction cup. To install the model in the mount, you just need to insert the slides on the body into the corresponding slots on the bracket and push the device until it clicks. Moreover, you can do this with one hand; it is not at all necessary to use the second - everything is simple and convenient. To remove the combo from the mount, one hand is also enough - we slightly lift the “petal” of the holder, which is slightly protruding forward of the body, after which the “Marlin” easily leaves the bracket.

The holder has a hinge that allows you to easily rotate the “combination” at least 360 degrees. So at any time you can turn the camera lens, say, into the interior or to the side - record a conversation with a traffic police officer. At the same time, the fixation of the hinge is sufficiently rigid so that the recorder does not hang on the glass.

We've sorted out the mounting, now let's move on to connecting the Inspector Marlin A7L. The first method is the simplest and fastest. To do this, you will need a supplied power cable with a plug from the car's cigarette lighter. Everything here is standard - like other recorders and “combinations”. The second method allows you to get rid of the wires dangling on the glass and free the cigarette lighter. To do this, another power cable was placed in the box with the Inspector Marlin A7L, which connects directly to the car’s on-board network through the interior lighting. The wire can be neatly hidden under the interior trim. It’s nice that the manufacturer has given users a choice, without the need to purchase any additional accessories.

Excerpt describing Marlin Camp Carbine

- Fine! Fine! Fine! - But how can you say this in Russian?.. When Pierre returned home, he was given two posters by Rastopchin that had been brought that day. The first said that the rumor that Count Rostopchin was prohibited from leaving Moscow was unfair and that, on the contrary, Count Rostopchin was glad that ladies and merchant wives were leaving Moscow. “Less fear, less news,” the poster said, “but I answer with my life that there will be no villain in Moscow.” These words clearly showed Pierre for the first time that the French would be in Moscow. The second poster said that our main apartment was in Vyazma, that Count Wittschstein defeated the French, but that since many residents want to arm themselves, there are weapons prepared for them in the arsenal: sabers, pistols, guns, which residents can get at a cheap price. The tone of the posters was no longer as playful as in Chigirin’s previous conversations. Pierre thought about these posters. Obviously, that terrible thundercloud, which he called upon with all the strength of his soul and which at the same time aroused involuntary horror in him - obviously this cloud was approaching. “Should I enlist in the military and go to the army or wait? – Pierre asked himself this question for the hundredth time. He took a deck of cards lying on his table and began to play solitaire. “If this solitaire comes out,” he said to himself, mixing the deck, holding it in his hand and looking up, “if it comes out, it means... what does it mean?..” He didn’t have time to decide what it meant when a voice was heard behind the office door the eldest princess asking if she could come in. “Then it will mean that I have to go to the army,” Pierre finished to himself. “Come in, come in,” he added, turning to the prince. (One eldest princess, with a long waist and a petrified face, continued to live in Pierre’s house; the two younger ones got married.) “Forgive me, mon cousin, for coming to you,” she said in a reproachfully excited voice. - After all, we finally need to decide on something! What will it be? Everyone has left Moscow, and the people are rioting. Why are we staying? “On the contrary, everything seems to be fine, ma cousine,” said Pierre with that habit of playfulness that Pierre, who always embarrassedly endured his role as a benefactor in front of the princess, acquired for himself in relation to her. - Yes, it’s good... good well-being! Today Varvara Ivanovna told me how different our troops are. You can certainly attribute it to honor. And the people have completely rebelled, they stop listening; My girl started being rude too. Soon they will start beating us too. You can't walk on the streets. And most importantly, the French will be here tomorrow, what can we expect! “I ask one thing, mon cousin,” said the princess, “order me to be taken to St. Petersburg: whatever I am, I cannot live under Bonaparte’s rule.” - Come on, ma cousine, where do you get your information from? On the contrary... - I will not submit to your Napoleon. Others do whatever they want... If you don’t want to do it... - Yes, I will do it, I’ll order it now. The princess was apparently annoyed that there was no one to be angry with. She sat down on a chair, whispering something. “But this is being conveyed to you incorrectly,” said Pierre. “Everything is quiet in the city, and there is no danger.” I was reading just now...” Pierre showed the princess the posters. – The Count writes that he answers with his life that the enemy will not be in Moscow. “Oh, this count of yours,” the princess spoke angrily, “is a hypocrite, a villain who himself incited the people to rebel.” Wasn’t he the one who wrote in those stupid posters that whoever he was, drag him by the crest to the exit (and how stupid)! Whoever takes it, he says, will have honor and glory. So I was quite happy. Varvara Ivanovna said that her people almost killed her because she spoke French... “But it’s so... You take everything to heart,” said Pierre and began to play solitaire. Despite the fact that the solitaire had worked out, Pierre did not go to the army, but remained in empty Moscow, still in the same anxiety, indecision, in fear and at the same time in joy, expecting something terrible. The next day, the princess left in the evening, and his chief manager came to Pierre with the news that the money he required to outfit the regiment could not be obtained unless one estate was sold. The general manager generally represented to Pierre that all these undertakings of the regiment were supposed to ruin him. Pierre had difficulty hiding his smile as he listened to the manager’s words. “Well, sell it,” he said. - What can I do, I can’t refuse now! The worse the state of affairs, and especially his affairs, was, the more pleasant it was for Pierre, the more obvious it was that the catastrophe he was waiting for was approaching. Almost none of Pierre's acquaintances were in the city. Julie left, Princess Marya left. Of the close acquaintances, only the Rostovs remained; but Pierre did not go to them. On this day, Pierre, in order to have fun, went to the village of Vorontsovo to see a large balloon that was being built by Leppich to destroy the enemy, and a test balloon that was supposed to be launched tomorrow. This ball was not ready yet; but, as Pierre learned, it was built at the request of the sovereign. The Emperor wrote to Count Rastopchin the following about this ball: “Aussitot que Leppich sera pret, composez lui un equipage pour sa nacelle d'hommes surs et intelligents et depechez un courrier au general Koutousoff pour l'en prevenir. Je l'ai instruit de la chose.

Radar detector

Thanks to the radar detector function, the Inspector Marlin A7L warns the driver in advance when approaching speed cameras and radars. This is done using, in fact, a GPS informer (the device “spies” on cameras along the way using the built-in database of coordinates of their location) and a radar detector (actively capturing radar signals in real time). The model detects pulses of complexes in the following ranges:

  • Reception of ARROW ST/M radars;
  • K - 24.150 GHz ±125 MHz;
  • Ka - 34.3 GHz; 34.7 GHz; 34.94 GHz;
  • X - 10.525 GHz ±50 MHz;
  • Laser - 800~1000 nm (360°).

In the settings, you can select one of five operating modes of the radar detector: “Highway”, “City”, “City 1”, “City 2” and “IQ”. Depending on the selected mode, the antenna sensitivity is adjusted. For example, in urban mode the sensitivity is less. This is necessary primarily to reduce the number of false positives. In urban environments, there are too many “temptations” for a radar detector that create interference - from cell towers and cruise control systems in cars to automatic door sensors. On the highway, the sensitivity of the antenna is higher, since the speed there is higher and you need to catch the radar signal as early as possible. In turn, there are fewer sources of interference on the routes.

“IQ” allows you to automatically switch between “City” and “Highway” depending on the speed of the vehicle (up to 80 km/h – “City”, above – “Highway”). This is actually convenient so that you don’t have to reach for the mode change button once again.

The radar part is supplemented with a speedcam function, also known as a GPS informer. This option is mainly useful in cities where the use of mobile radars is prohibited. And the “fleet” of stationary complexes is not limited only to speed control settings – many “controllers” monitor, for example, the allocated lane. The GPS informer allows you to find out exactly what type of radar is on your way. At the same time, if necessary, the driver will be notified if the complex “shoots in the back.” The camera type is announced by voice. If the radar pulse is picked up by the radar detector (and the speedcam is silent), the sound will consist only of a loud intermittent signal.

It should be noted that the database with coordinates is updated with enviable regularity - approximately once a month. The update is extremely simple: download the new database from the official Inspector website, format the memory card on your computer (a card reader is included in the package for this), upload a file with the bin extension to it, insert the card into the recorder and confirm the update. By the way, the Inspector Marlin A7L firmware is updated in the same way.

I was also pleased with the huge number of settings regarding the operation of the radar detector. If you are too lazy to read the instructions and delve into the menu, then you can just leave everything as is. Well, if you are annoyed by frequent sound notifications or you want to customize everything as much as possible, then it’s worth spending a little time. For example, you can set a speed threshold for sound warnings (below the set level the model will be silent), disable the display of speed on video when the set limit is exceeded, add your own points to the database, and much more.

As a “passive” speed control mode, the driver himself works by changing the color of the speedometer indicators on the device display. As soon as you exceed the permissible limit by 10 km/h, the data stamp turns green, and if by 20 km/h or more, it turns red. In the “City” mode and its variants, the device starts from a “starting” speed of 60 km/h, and in “Highway” mode – from 110 km/h.

In the city, it is predictable that the GPS informant works mainly, since 100% of the cameras in megacities are stationary, and mobile cameras are used in the suburbs and on highways. Here there are no questions for the Inspector Marlin A7L - the device warned us in advance about all the radars visible on our way, we did not find any gaps.

Just in case, the driver is also notified about dummies (installed but non-working radars). For what? In place of the “empty box”, sooner or later they may install a working complex, which only after some time will be included in the GPS informant database. In order for the user not to mistake the radar detector signal for interference, an indication is needed on the screen of the hybrid about approaching the dummy. The driver will understand that there is a work complex ahead, which is not yet in the data of the combo device.

By default, GPS alerts are issued 700 meters from the camera location. In this case, the distance can be increased in the settings up to one kilometer. With the GPS informer turned off, the radar detector showed detection of complexes at a distance of up to 1000 meters - enough to have time to slow down to the permitted speed.

The Inspector Marlin A7L is not without false alarms, but they cannot be called too frequent - on average three to four times per train. In addition, the model’s settings make it possible to ensure that the motorist is not disturbed until he exceeds the speed limit.
