So, before us is a VAZ-2108 produced in 1996. This car is quite good by the standards of the domestic automotive industry. But is it capable of processing 350–400 hp, which are wrapped in a twenty-year-old body? Initially, the G8 had 1.1–1.5 liter engines. To obtain power 7–8 times higher than the calculated factory figure, a 16-valve engine from a VAZ-2112 was installed under the hood, which was upgraded with other pistons, cylinder head, valves and much more. A huge Subarov turbine, complemented by an intercooler, instantly increased the power to 200 horsepower.

This is where the problems started. The list of them is so large that if I wrote them all, the editor would be put to sleep trying to highlight the main ones. Let me just say that on the way to the finished configuration, the motor shattered into pieces six times! And a couple of times literally. It can be compared to a cat using its last, ninth life. Today the engine is almost ready. But custom-made for 80 thousand rubles. The cylinder head will already seem like a farce given the fact that the car was originally purchased for 100 thousand.

The best option is to replace the factory pipe from the manifold to the muffler with an element with a larger diameter. However, it should be selected strictly taking into account the technical capabilities of the car!

At the end of the work, you need to pay attention not only to what is located on the body of the VAZ 2108, but also under the hood, namely, to the engine. You can force it in several ways that produce the same effect:

  1. Boring cylinder blocks. The labor-intensive part of this process is boring, which can take an inexperienced car enthusiast several days. Once the process is completed, all that remains is to purchase the appropriate pistons and rings.
  2. Replacing the crankshaft. This method is considered quite expensive, because during the tuning process the master will have to purchase a new shaft with a large crank radius. And this, in turn, will entail additional costs for the purchase of pistons, cylinders and rings.

Next, the construction process tripped over the gearbox. Or rather, the lack of a suitable transmission. The VAZ gearbox can withstand up to 200 horsepower, but not 400, to which the engine was eventually accelerated. During the construction process, the gearbox was literally torn apart several times, and after opening it, inside there was a mess of gears floating in oil. The owner changed them once a week - I'm not exaggerating at all.

In the end, it became obvious that we needed to look for a “donor.” It was the legendary rally Lancia Delta Integrale. Having installed its box on the “eight”, all that remains is to find the wheel drives and the rocker. And if with the rocker everything was quite simple (it came from the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII), then about the drives I had to think twice. And what do you think? Drives from the same "Lancia"? Or maybe from Evo? Again, bypassed, because they are made from army (!) torsion bars. They took a piece of suspension from a combat armored personnel carrier and made drives. It's like making a New Year's cracker out of a hydrogen bomb.

After this, the interior is cleaned, washed and thoroughly dried. Next, you can apply soundproofing material. The seats in the car can be replaced with sports ones. They are quite comfortable and have a fixed fit.

If funds for expensive leather are limited, as an option, you can use tweed that matches the body color. Don't ignore the dashboard either. The panel can be upholstered with any material, adding originality and exclusivity to it. It wouldn’t hurt to touch on the lighting. Neon or LED lighting looks very stylish. Also, the steering wheel, gearbox, power windows, floor mats, phone holders and the like can be modified.

The miracles of transformation did not end there. The Gazelle cooling radiator has migrated to our G8, which does its job perfectly. There is also an oil cooler - its presence is vital on a sports car of this level. Even the gas tank is tuned - it’s a 20-liter plastic product with a system of anti-drip curtains, which prevent the gas pump from being fed with air instead of gasoline when cornering. In addition, the plastic solution is lighter, and the struggle when building a sports car is for every kilogram. “Nutritionists” recommended R17 forged wheels, which the owner purchased from a racing team in Tolyatti.

Next is the body. Its refinement is aimed at improving rigidity and aerodynamics. It’s good if at the same time you can make the car beautiful. Spacers and subframes are required. But this is not enough. The front bumper directs air flow to cool the front brakes. Of course, we also worked on the bottom. It was completely cut out and sheets of thick corrugated aluminum were installed. In order for the body to withstand the colossal loads that it experiences, a bolted safety cage was assembled in it, which, even if the maximum pressure is exceeded, will not burst, but will bend slightly. Its presence is difficult to overestimate, given that the power is so abundant that the wide wheels slip even in third gear if the asphalt is even a little wet.
