Performance characteristics
This brand of oil is more stable than its competitors. The quality of the liquid remains unchanged throughout its entire service life and is capable of doing what is required of it over the entire distance.
Even the most severe temperature conditions will not have any effect on it. In addition, Formula 1 racers tested this oil and eventually decided to use it for their cars.
An important feature of this product is that the oil does not contain chlorine or any other impurities. The company cares not only about the car, but also about the environment. The lubricant can be used in gasoline, gas and diesel engines.
Advantages and disadvantages
According to tests, Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 provides high-quality engine protection regardless of conditions, including operation at high speeds. In addition, it:
- In comparison with analogues, it significantly increases the working life of the internal combustion engine;
- Tested more than once in laboratory and real conditions;
- Used sparingly;
- It is characterized by excellent performance at start-up, allows you to save fuel, since low friction and viscosity are the key to its rapid delivery to the “end consumer”;
- Almost one hundred percent absence of chlorine;
- There are low risks during disposal.
The only drawback, perhaps, is the high price.
Technical specifications
Shell Ultra has the following technical features. parameters:
- the value of the kinematic viscosity of the liquid is equal to 79.1 mm2/s, despite the fact that the engine temperature during operation is 400C;
- when the engine temperature increases to 1000C, the viscosity value decreases to 13.1 mm2/s;
- this oil has a density of 840 kg/m3;
- the temperature at which combustion occurs is 2420C (the manufacturer claims that before the oil ignites, it will have to be boiled, a couple of times);
- the temperature at which the oil freezes is -450C, which makes it very popular among Siberians and other residents of the north.
It follows that the oil is designed in such a way that consumption remains as low as possible and ensures complete long-term protection of the engine.
Advantages
In order not to be content with the dry language of numbers, we will highlight the most obvious advantages of this product:
- thanks to Shell Ultra, the engine becomes more wear-resistant under any operating conditions;
- Fuel and lubricants are applicable even for F1 racers;
- liquid is supplied to each element of the engine structure, which dramatically increases the engine starting speed, even if it is very cold outside.
- emissions from this oil are minimized at the development stage, so fuel consumption is as low as possible;
- used oil does not harm the environment, since nothing is mixed into the composition.
Flaws
The following can be identified as disadvantages:
- Shell has stopped sealing its products. And due to the fact that the popularity of this manufacturer is only growing, there are more fakes on the market. Therefore, you need to buy only in trusted places;
- finding Shell products in the high price segment;
- sometimes the fact differs from what is stated. It is possible that this is due to counterfeit goods, but periodically in the cold the engine does not work.
How to distinguish a fake?
To distinguish counterfeit products from real products, pay attention to the following nuances:
- PurePlus inscription. In the originals, this logo is sprayed, which creates a visual mirror effect. Any inscriptions on labels, as well as images in real Shell products, are always high-quality and clear. If you are dealing with a fake, they will be blurry. The label itself on the back of the bottle is two-layered; by pulling it, you can separate it into two parts. There are also instructions written in various languages, the text of which is clearly centered.
- Counterfeit oils are usually produced in Russia, while the originals are produced in the European Union. The number 501 on the barcode indicates that the product was bottled in Europe.
- The lot number is indicated on the fake. If you rub your finger over it, you can remove it. In original liquids, this code is driven into the bottom of the container.
- Real Shell Helix Ultra oils are supplied in cans made of durable and opaque plastic, through which you cannot see the level of lubricant inside. Fake containers have irregularities.
- If you open a bottle of original oil, you will be able to separate the cap from the retainer without effort, otherwise you will see a surrogate. The stopper itself will be smooth, but in fake canisters they are made of rough material. In addition, this element in the originals is always one piece with the skirt.
- When you open a container with original liquid, you will not hear any odors, but counterfeit products have a distinct plastic aroma.
- In real oils, the color of the stopper and the canister always matches.

Description Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40
This is a synthetic oil produced to protect engine parts, capable of maintaining cleanliness even with a long service interval. Keeps pistons at factory level. Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 Specifications:
API SN/CF: energy-saving composition, meets the requirements of the best automakers. It is characterized by the presence of additives that prevent the formation of deposits. Applicable in diesel engines.
ACEA A3/B4: can be poured into any injection and high-performance engines running on biofuel or diesel.
This indicator helps you select the necessary products. Engine performance, fuel consumption, and the amount of carbon deposits formed depend on how correctly this is done.
Explanation of markings
The classification of this technical fluid is standard and occurs according to the SAE (US Society of Engineers) system. The marking contains data on how viscous it is and in what temperature range it can work:
- W (abbr. Winter) - means that this technical fluid retains all its performance properties in winter.
- 5 – degree of viscosity at temperatures below 00C, expressed in conventional units of the SAE system.
- 40 is the maximum air temperature at which the oil continues to maintain its characteristics.
It follows from this that this lubricant will work flawlessly at temperatures from -300C to +400C.
What does 5W40 stand for?
You can learn about the technical parameters, properties and features of Shell Helix Ultra HX7 and HX8 5W40 liquid from the decoding of the signs. The number 5 in this case indicates the low-temperature class indicator, which determines the viscosity properties of the lubricant when operating in severe winter frosts. Shell Helix Ultra oil can be used in a temperature range from -30 to 25 degrees, in which case the liquid will not lose its properties.
The W symbol indicates that the product is all-season and can be used all year round. The next two signs indicate high-temperature conditions at which the use of machine oil is allowed. The number 40 refers to the average viscosity class. In the summer heat, the lubricant will not lose its qualities, functioning at elevated temperatures from 35 to 40 degrees.
How to spot a fake?
A fake is always cheaper than the original, but is also significantly inferior to it in all characteristics. In order not to fall for the attractive price and not buy a fake, check the originality yourself:
- First of all, you need to inspect the canister. Original products are always beautifully designed, because there is no point in the manufacturer skimping on packaging. if the text is blurry or the image is unclear, then most likely this is a fake;
- then you need to look at the front of the package. If this is an original, then there will definitely be a holography of the “PurePlus Technology” logo, and the label placed on the back of the canister will be double-layered;
- Next, find the place where the date and time of manufacture are written. Swipe your finger across these labels. If they are worn off, then you can be sure that these are counterfeit products and should not be taken;
- smell the canister. If you smell a strong plastic smell, then this is a fake product. Large companies do not use cheap plastic in production. In addition, pay attention to the fact that the packaging does not have any joining seams, the integrity of the form, without a single hint of the component parts;
- All canisters have oil level markings. You should carefully consider how even the divisions are. If they are crooked or different in length, then it is a counterfeit, but if they are straight and even, then most likely it is an original;
- The lid and canister must be painted the same color. In this case, the density of the lid is higher than the density of the canister. Opening the canister should be easy and the lid, when separated from the body, should not warp it. There are no foil inserts or cushioning materials under the lid of the original product.
In the video we present the experiments carried out to distinguish a fake from the original!
Important
The manufacturer changes the packaging design at will, without warning anyone about it. Therefore, you should not immediately identify unfamiliar packaging as a fake. Go to the official website of the manufacturer to understand whether this is really a new design or whether they are trying to deceive you.
Types of lubricants
Vehicle owners around the world are familiar with Shell Helix motor oils. All of them are currently divided into 5 groups:
- HX3 - mineral oils for engines installed in cars of previous years of production (before 2006).
- Diesel HX5 - mineral oils for naturally aspirated and turbocharged pre-chamber power units equipped with a device that recirculates crankcase gases.
- HX6 - mineral lubricants with additives of synthetic components. Recommended for use in power plants running on gasoline and diesel.
- HX7 is a semi-synthetic for gasoline (injection) and turbocharged diesel engines with an intercooler. Oils of this class provide more efficient use of the capabilities of the power unit installed on a specific vehicle.
- HX8 and Ultra are energy-saving synthetics for vehicles used in all conditions.
However, Shell Helix Ultra is the result of one of many studies carried out by the Shell development team. The scientific and practical research carried out was ultimately marked by the production of a group of motor oils characterized by high operational and technical parameters. The difference between the lubricants of this group and the HX8 Synthetic series lies in the methodology for obtaining the base oil.
Important! Many types of lubricants make it difficult to choose the best option not only for a beginner, but also for an experienced driver. Therefore, on the company’s official website there is an original Shell Lubematch program, which allows you to accurately select the most suitable oil modification.
