Changing the coolant on a VAZ 2114
It is not so rare that cases occur when the happy owner of a passenger car drives his vehicle without even looking under the hood. Such exploitation is not permitted. For example, all the antifreeze may leak from the cooling system of an internal combustion engine, and then it will definitely be necessary to carry out a major overhaul of the engine. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor the presence of coolant (coolant) and know which one is poured into the system.
Monitor the presence of coolant
COOLING SYSTEM VAZ 2114
Once upon a time, back in Soviet times, water was poured into a car radiator as coolant. But it was very inconvenient - in cold weather it had to be drained regularly so as not to defrost the system, and in the morning before the trip I had to run around with buckets of hot water. In addition, the cooling jacket in the cylinder block and in the cylinder head suffered from corrosion. Nowadays, water is practically no longer used; antifreeze or antifreeze is poured into the cooling system (CO).
The volume of VAZ 2114 coolant in CO is about 8 liters (7.8 liters according to factory conditions). A car that has rolled off the assembly line can be filled with any coolant; the manufacturer does not adhere to any specific rules in this matter.
But if the fluid runs out or the time has come to replace it, then topping up or replacing is necessary. And here you need to know what is poured into the system, and whether it is possible to mix antifreeze with antifreeze.
ANTIFREEZE
The name "antifreeze" contains Greek and English roots. The Greek “anti” means “against”, the English “freeze” translates to “freeze”. Therefore, the coolant located in the cooling system must not only prevent overheating of the internal combustion engine, but also not freeze in frosty weather. The basis of antifreeze is ethylene glycol, and the freezing point of the coolant depends on how much water is added to the chemical composition. The fluid components do not cause corrosion of engine parts.
The composition can be of almost any color; ethylene glycol itself is colorless. The composition is painted so that it can be seen in case of leakage, and so that it is not drunk by mistake; the antifreeze itself is poisonous. In addition, the old coolant changes color, which means it is time to replace it.
Antifreeze
Antifreeze is a type of antifreeze, only at one time it was specially developed for VAZ cars. It is blue in color and can be concentrated, diluted 60% with water (grade A-40M), diluted 35% (A-65M). The concentrate is not used in its pure form; it is diluted at your discretion, depending on the freezing temperature that is oriented towards in the region where the car is located. Antifreeze has a more aggressive environment, but this does not mean that it is of low quality.
MYTHS ABOUT ANTIFREEZE AND ANTIFREEZE
- Antifreeze is worse than antifreeze. This is not true. Both coolants are made from the same base (ethylene glycol). But their density is different, and different instruments (hydrometers) are used to measure this parameter.
- The color of a liquid is an indicator of quality, and its composition depends on the color. In fact, the composition of the coolant is basically similar for all, and does not depend in any way on the color. Antifreeze is mainly tinted green and red.
Cooling system VAZ 2107: device and diagram
Movement is life, but movement is warmth. Try rubbing your palms together and see for yourself. Heat is the final transformation of all energies into each other. In the human body, mutual transformations of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates occur, which as a result decompose through multi-stage enzymatic oxidation with the release of heat.
In the heart of a car engine, chemical transformations of fuel into exhaust gases and water also occur, releasing a large amount of energy, which is converted into mechanical energy, and some is dissipated as heat. Moreover, this heat must be purposefully collected and removed, no matter how much of it is generated.
This is precisely what the cooling system of the VAZ 2107 serves for.
If we remember that the efficiency of a gasoline engine is ideally 25%, and in city traffic jams - about 7%, this means that out of a 40 liters of a fully filled VAZ 2107 tank in city conditions, you spent only three liters on moving the car! How many? We repeat, three liters, we were not mistaken. Where did the other thirty-seven go? That's right, they burned in a useless fire, polluting the air and wearing out the car. The carburetor and injector improve efficiency, but not much. The cooling system of the VAZ 2107 is responsible for removing this heat.
The engine cooling system diagram is as follows:
Structure of the main parts of the system: (in the picture there is a VAZ 2106 engine on which a carburetor is installed).
- The actual jacket of the engine cooling system (7), passages and holes in the cylinder block, with its exhaust pipe (4).
- The cooling system pump, or pump (16), during the operation of which coolant (antifreeze, antifreeze) circulates. Its structure is similar to an impeller. It is in a single connection with the generator, a single belt (15).
- Thermostat (18) separates the small (when the engine is cold) and large (when the engine is hot) fluid circulation circles. The thermostat device is simple; its task is to open or close the liquid bypass valve.
- Cooling system hoses (discharging cooled liquid from the radiator and supplying hot liquid to the radiator, thermostat hoses, hoses to the pump, etc.).
- The radiator is the main heat exchanger with a cooling function. The design of the radiator can be different; now aluminum is used, but a copper radiator is much more efficient, but less resistant.
- Radiator fan, commonly known as “Carlson” (11), which turns on if necessary when the engine temperature rises.
- Expansion tank available for visual control of fluid quality and topping up. A durable hose runs from the expansion tank to the radiator neck. Some people think it's a coolant hose, but that's wrong. Its function is simply to keep the radiator filled.
A complete cooling system diagram includes additional parts such as drain plugs, fan switch, fan fuse, and others.
Let us remind you that on the VAZ 2107 the electrical circuit is such that the fan and sound signal fuse is one common, 10 A.
This means that if you beep too much when the fan is running (and this can be easily noticed by the slight noise and increased charge consumption), you risk being left with an overheated engine.
The total volume of the cooling system on the VAZ 2107 is 9.85 liters. Inexperienced drivers sometimes find it impossible to fill more than 3-5 liters; this is hampered by air pockets that need to be removed. The volume of plugs can be half the volume of the entire system! The container is designed for a completely filled jacket, hoses, radiator, and expansion tank.
In the cooling system, the freezing point of antifreeze should not be higher than -40 degrees Celsius.
People often ask: injector and carburetor - is there a difference in the cooling system? Yes, there is, but it is insignificant.
FILLING LIQUID INTO THE SYSTEM
What kind of coolant to pour into a VAZ 2114 is always a concern for car owners of these cars. There is no big difference, you can pour antifreeze into the cooling system, you can also add antifreeze, but mixing the compounds is still very undesirable. Antifreeze has a more aggressive environment due to other additives, and its too concentrated composition can even “corrode” the radiator over time. It is better to add to the radiator the brand of coolant that was previously filled in the system. If the brand is not known, then it is better to completely replace the fluid.
REPLACEMENT WITH WASHING
Is it possible to replace antifreeze with antifreeze? Why not. It is only necessary to flush the cooling system when replacing antifreeze with antifreeze. Conversely, you need to flush the cooling system when replacing antifreeze with antifreeze. We have already indicated the reason for flushing - the compositions are different and mixing can lead to foaming of the coolant. Of course, an explosion will not occur, but long-term use of the mixed composition is not recommended. The system should be flushed with clean water, and the water should be changed several times. Rinse until clear liquid, free of dirty impurities, drains from the radiator.
Replacing the coolant on a VAZ is done with your own hands in stages:
- We park the car level; at an angle, all the coolant may not drain out;
- Remove the expansion tank plug;
- Unscrew the drain plug at the bottom of the radiator. We prepare the container into which the contents from the radiator are drained in advance;
- We twist the plug on the cylinder block and drain the coolant from the block. To get to the plug, you need to remove the ignition module. The module is secured with three bolts;
- We tighten the plugs, fill in water and start the engine. Let the engine run for fifteen minutes;
- As already written above, we flush the system several times;
- Then fill in new fluid and remove the airlock. How many liters of antifreeze are provided in the VAZ 2114, so many should enter the system.
REMOVAL OF AIR CLOCK
How to add antifreeze if there is an air lock? There are different ways to fill liquid (discussed below).
Removing air through the throttle assembly:
- Remove one of the coolant supply hoses to the throttle valve.
- Remove the expansion tank cap and cover the tank with a clean rag.
- Blow through a rag into the reservoir until coolant flows from the removed hose.
- Quickly put the hose in place, tighten it with a clamp, and add fluid to the level. How much antifreeze will still fit into the VAZ 2114 depends on how “airy” the system is.
Removing air through the throttle without removing the expansion tank plug:
- We heat up the engine and turn it off.
- Remove one of the throttle hoses.
- After a short time, the air should come out and antifreeze should flow.
- We also quickly put on the hose.
- Check the coolant level and add it as necessary.
Bleeding air by placing the vehicle at an angle:
- We're heading uphill.
- Remove the tank cap.
- Warm up the engine to operating temperature.
- We accelerate sharply. If liquid falls into the system, add it.
You can change the cooling radiator on a VAZ yourself. In this case, an air lock may also form. You need to control how many liters of antifreeze will fit into the VAZ 2114. If there is a lot of new coolant left in the canister, it is necessary to remove the plug, otherwise the engine may overheat.
It should be remembered that the volume of the cooling system in the VAZ 2114 is approximately 7.5-8 liters.
If you don’t want to bother with replacing the coolant, you can take the car to a car service center. The cost of such work depends on the region and the level of equipment of the car workshop or center. On average, the price ranges from 300 to 600 rubles.
TIPS FOR REPLACING COOLANT
- Hot liquid must be drained carefully, using gloves and thick, waterproof clothing.
- After replacement, you need to check if there is an air lock in the system. The air must be removed, otherwise the engine may overheat.
- When draining the liquid, cover the generator with a thick plastic bag or rag to prevent coolant from getting into it.
- When mixing antifreeze with antifreeze, nothing particularly bad will happen, but it is still advisable to avoid mixing.
Take into account all the nuances when replacing the coolant.
Take care of your car!
Air lock in the cooling system
After it has been determined how much antifreeze you need to fill into the VAZ 2110, you should consider the air in the cooling system. Air is mostly introduced when liquid is poured into the tank. In order to avoid incidents, you need to pour in antifreeze gradually and set certain pauses before each pour. It is not recommended to pour large portions at once, as this may end badly.
Sometimes, even after the next fill of antifreeze, the air does not disappear, how can I force it out then?
Displacing air from the tank:
- Place the car on a hill in front;
- Do not open the tank lid completely;
- Turn on the engine and warm up to the required temperature;
- Turn off the engine and use gloves to compress the pipes.
The procedure is necessary in order not to overheat the engine. After all the requirements are met, the air will evaporate and you can safely move around by car.
HOW TO CHECK WHAT LIQUID IS PUT INTO THE COOLING RADIATOR
Having bought a car secondhand, you just need to check the presence and level of coolant in the engine cooling system!
Its insufficient level can negatively affect the engine, not to mention the complete absence of fluid in the radiator. It is also worth checking if there are any leaks from the pipes, from the radiator, from the heater in the cabin.
If the old owner of the car forgot to say what liquid was poured into the radiator, you can try to determine its composition yourself. Antifreeze is almost always blue, antifreeze is usually green or red (red comes in different shades, even purple). If the color is unclear (rust color), then this composition must be changed. In general, after purchasing a used car, it is recommended to completely change the coolant.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO MIX DIFFERENT FLUIDS IN THE COOLING SYSTEM
Is it possible to mix antifreeze with antifreeze?
You should know that antifreeze is a type of antifreeze - it was specially developed for Zhiguli cars back in Soviet times. At that time, domestic antifreeze was not of good quality, and a better coolant composition for the new car model was simply necessary.
Car enthusiasts often ask whether it is possible to mix antifreeze with antifreeze. This issue is often discussed among car owners in real life, on various forums on the Internet. To be honest, they never came to a common opinion. One thing can only be said for sure - a catastrophe as such will not happen to the car. But still, it is not recommended to mix the compositions. It is better to adhere to the technical conditions and, for a certain car model, fill in the coolant that is recommended by the manufacturer for this brand of vehicle.
COOLANT FOR VAZ 2114
What kind of coolant should I fill in the VAZ 2114? Maybe first you need to ask what kind of coolant is filled in at the factory? The Volzhsky Automobile Plant does not adhere to a single standard; in a VAZ 2114 car, with an equal degree of probability, there can be both antifreeze and antifreeze in the engine cooling system. But it is still recommended to fill in antifreeze, it is not for nothing that it was once specially designed for VAZ cars. The coolant must be changed periodically; this must be done in the following cases:
- 60 thousand kilometers after purchasing a new car;
- Every two years;
- If the coolant has a red tint or the liquid has become cloudy;
Rusty coolant
- If the coolant leaked and had to be diluted with water;
- When repairing, removing and installing an internal combustion engine (ICE).
In order to make a replacement, you need to know how much antifreeze there should be in the VAZ 2114 cooling system. According to the technical characteristics, 7.8 liters are poured into the VAZ 2114 internal combustion engine cooling system until it is fully charged.
The industry produces three types of ready-made antifreeze:
- AK (concentrate);
- A40;
- A65.
Antifreeze AK is a concentrate and cannot be used in its pure form. The concentrate is diluted one to one with water, then the freezing point of the coolant will be -30ºC. A65 freezes at -65ºC, the most popular brand is A40 (freezing point -40ºC). It is the A40 brand that is most often poured into the Zhiguli BA3 2114.
There is a question that arises before replacing the coolant - whether it is necessary to flush the cooling system when replacing antifreeze. The answer is this: if the old coolant is not cloudy and there are no sediments in the radiator in the form of insoluble flakes, it is not necessary to flush the system. But washing definitely won’t hurt, it won’t make it worse.
How much antifreeze is needed in a VAZ-2110?
A car of this brand will need to be filled with about 7-8 liters of liquid.
It is recommended to purchase antifreeze from trusted manufacturers.
This will ensure normal cooling in the system. Sometimes when pouring it may seem that 5-6 liters . But that's not true. Antifreeze cannot immediately fill the entire system, and therefore it must be filled correctly.
After pouring antifreeze, you need to let the engine idle for some time. Then open the expander plug and add fluid to the system. Topping up should be done with the engine turned off, when it has cooled down.
If there is little liquid in the system, it will boil faster and will not be able to fully cool the engine . It is also important to monitor the excess fluid in the system. In this case, it may tear the pipes or the tank itself. There are usually marks on the tank with the minimum and maximum antifreeze points in the system.
The antifreeze level in the expansion tank should be between the MIN and MAX marks.
Draining antifreeze
In the VAZ-2110 it should be changed after a mileage of 150,000 kilometers.
Typically, antifreeze is changed every 5 years or after 150 thousand kilometers.
It is not recommended to exceed this figure. But sometimes in practice it may be necessary to replace antifreeze prematurely. This should be done when:
- The fluid in the reservoir has a film of oil.
- There is rust in the liquid.
- The engine often boils.
- There is a fluid leak.
Antifreeze is changed ahead of schedule if it has darkened, but first the cause is established.
Recommendations
What should you consider when replacing antifreeze? To carry out filling correctly, you must adhere to the following rules :
- Fill in the brand of antifreeze that was previously in the system.
- Give preference to a quality product from a reputable manufacturer. This way you can increase the service life of the motor.
- Filling should only be done into a cold engine.
Before filling in new antifreeze, it is recommended to flush the cooling system with special cleaners.
HOW TO FLUSH THE COOLING SYSTEM
Before replacing antifreeze on a VAZ 2114, in some cases you should first flush it. Flushing is necessary when scale forms in the cooling jacket of the internal combustion engine, or when engine oil gets into the radiator (oil gets in when the cylinder head gasket is faulty). Cleaning the system is very simple:
- The old coolant is drained (how to drain antifreeze from a VAZ 2114);
- Water is poured in (preferably boiled or distilled);
- The engine starts and idles for 20–30 minutes;
- The water is drained and the system is charged with new coolant.
What to fill
Generally speaking, there are several types of coolant that is poured into a modern internal combustion engine. Its composition, color and specification depend on the specific operation of a particular internal combustion engine. Thus, a few decades ago, distilled water was widely used. Unfortunately, this cooling method turned out to have plenty of disadvantages. Firstly, due to the use of water, corrosion quickly appeared on the internal walls of the internal combustion engine, the cooling pump and the radiator itself. Thus, the equipment quickly broke down and required repair.
It should be taken into account that during sudden frosts there was a sharp expansion of the frozen liquid, pipes and the radiator cracked. The result is expensive repairs of units and the risk of having to replace the cylinder head.
In this regard, global automakers quickly came to the conclusion that it was necessary to use liquids that would not freeze or expand, but, on the contrary, would be resistant to any temperature changes.
So, most modern foreign cars use antifreeze. This liquid, thanks to the use of toxic but effective chemistry, will not freeze even at a record -50 degrees Celsius. In addition, this liquid does not react with metal, and therefore will not harm it or damage expensive equipment.
But at the moment, the most popular and popular coolant used in cars is antifreeze. In fact, this is a cheaper analogue of antifreeze, which, along with a low price, also has slightly worse technical characteristics. Most often, antifreeze is used on domestic cars, but old models of foreign cars are also often refilled with it.
REPLACING THE COOLANT OF A VAZ 2114 WITH YOUR OWN HANDS
Before replacing the coolant, the engine must first be cooled; work should be carried out on a cold engine. It goes without saying that the liquid should be purchased in advance. How many liters of antifreeze in a VAZ 2114 should be prepared for replacement? Although according to technical specifications the coolant should be about 8 liters, it is better to immediately purchase a 10-liter canister - in case it spills past the radiator.
On the VAZ 2114, replacing the coolant is easy. Let's consider an example of carrying out all operations on a car with an 8-valve engine.
Coolant replacement
We carry out the work in the following order:
- We unscrew the main engine protection. It is attached to the bottom of the engine compartment using four fasteners. Accordingly, if the protection is not worth it, then there is no need to turn it away.
- We remove the protective cover, which is located under the engine in the front part of the body.
- Remove the expansion tank plug.
- In the cabin, fully open the heater tap. This must be done so that when draining the coolant does not remain in the heating system.
- Prepare a container for draining the coolant. It is better to take a wide dish, for example, a basin. In this case, the coolant will not spill past.
- We find the drain plug on the radiator; it is located at the bottom near the generator. Before draining the radiator, you should somehow protect the generator from liquid getting on it.
- Drain the contents of the radiator.
- In order to get to the drain plug in the cylinder block, remove the ignition module. It is secured with three bolts.
- We remove the unscrewed module to the side; under it there is a drain plug. Unscrew it and drain the old coolant.
- We wait 10–15 minutes until everything merges.
- We tighten all the plugs.
How to add antifreeze to the cooling system? We place a funnel in the expansion tank and carefully pour the contents out of the canister, trying not to spill it past. After filling, we install all the removed parts in place. Then we start the engine and begin to warm up.
It should be noted that there is a high probability of an air lock forming in the cooling system, so it may not immediately enter the system. The volume of VAZ 2114 coolant is approximately 8 liters. Be guided by the amount of liquid remaining in the canister. If a blockage occurs, you should remove one of the hoses that go to heating the throttle valve and try to compress and release the upper radiator pipes. Antifreeze must pass into the system, making room for new fluid. There should be about two liters left in a ten-liter canister after all procedures.
A FEW TIPS
- Replacing antifreeze on a VAZ 2114 is carried out on a cold engine. It is not recommended to work on a hot internal combustion engine - there is a risk of burns.
- Before draining the coolant, protect the generator from moisture.
- When pouring antifreeze, you need to ensure that the entire required volume of liquid enters the cooling system. If it is less than required, the possibility of engine overheating cannot be ruled out.
- When mixing antifreeze and antifreeze, nothing particularly terrible will happen, but still, if possible, do not do this in order to avoid unexpected troubles.
In general, that’s all you need to know about how to replace the coolant on a VAZ 2114. The procedure is not complicated, you just need to do everything carefully and take your time.

Replacing coolant requires knowledge not only of the process itself, but also of the safety rules for carrying out work. For example, you cannot change the fluid when the engine is hot, that is, you cannot open the engine cooling radiator cap when the antifreeze, antifreeze or water in the system is hot. You may be burned by steam or escaping coolant.
The cooling fluid must be replaced periodically in compliance with the rules and regulations. You also need to know that you cannot mix antifreeze with antifreeze; you can dilute it with water, but this will deteriorate the properties of the coolant.
For cars of the VAZ family, it is recommended to change the coolant after a mileage of 60 thousand km. Some people are used to changing them yearly, for example, they replace antifreeze or antifreeze every 2-3 years.
Personally, I have the opinion that any liquid cooling for a car engine will be much more efficient and advanced than air cooling (many studies have been conducted on this topic and I have been convinced of this thesis from my own experience. Currently, 99.7 percent of cars have liquid engine cooling and in the future this figure will increase to 100 percent).
However, no antifreeze or antifreeze will save the engine with a guarantee and are not a panacea; moreover, after a certain period of time they need to be changed and for this sometimes you have to remove the engine (on average, the replacement period reaches about three years).
In this case, the car enthusiast may have a question: how many liters of this liquid are required to cool the engine? And I’ll say one more thing (in the process of writing this text), a question arose - why is this particular volume required, as established and no more/less?
Important: many car users and experts believe (almost all) that a liquid engine cooling system is always many times more efficient for a car engine and is more advanced than all other systems.
