Agree, new economic realities and the powerful expansion of imported cars in the late 90s of the last century put Russian automakers before a choice - to “surrender” to the mercy of the winners or to fight for the domestic automobile market, introducing modern global technologies into the production of automotive equipment. Some people succeeded, albeit not in the best way. Someone, it seems, has forever lost hope of reviving their own production, switching to “screwdriver” production.

Be that as it may, GAZ, which had previously thundered throughout the country, plunged headlong into competition, in particular, offering new versions of the Volga, which was popular in former times. The GAZ-24 was replaced by new, more modern models, the design of which included attempts to, to one degree or another, introduce modern developments in the global automobile industry. From 1997 to 2005, the GAZ 3110 model rolled off the assembly line of the Gorky Automobile Plant, in the appearance, interior and technical part of which significant improvements and positive changes could be noticed.

In 2004, based on this model, the production of a new car began - GAZ 31105 Volga, which was, in fact, the result of its restyling. The new product was offered in several modifications, including the Volga 31105 Chrysler. True, this car was not the result of a multifaceted joint activity with the CHRYSLER corporation. The car of this modification was equipped with a corporation power unit. In practice, it was a completely domestic Volga with a Chrysler engine. Nevertheless, the new product was received quite positively by car enthusiasts, and the Chrysler engine installed on gas 31105 favorably distinguished the already popular car among its “compatriots”.

It so happened that the GAZ 31105 model lasted only 5 years, and in 2009 it was discontinued. There were two main reasons that model 31105 did not work. The first reason was the crisis - it was in the country, it also affected the Gorky Automobile Plant. The second reason is low demand for cars.

GAZ tried various tricks to resuscitate the Volga, but first of all it was necessary to change the body. What has the car plant changed in the body over several decades? The GAZ 24 has been produced in series since 1970, and for so many years the body shape has not changed. Other spars, sills, roof, and also tail parts were installed - hood, wings, doors. But the outlines remained the same.

If we also take into account that the first copies of the GAZ 24 appeared on Russian roads in 1967, then this already smells like a record. To release the same thing for more than 40 years is something!

Since 2006, the Cruiser engine has been used not only on the Volga, but also on the Gazelle. If the engine was installed on the GAZ 31105 and GAZ 3102 from 2006 to 2009, then the Gazelles with Chrysler were produced until 2010.

But still, the “American” is more suitable for passenger cars, and the car plant found an alternative to it - it was replaced by the diesel Cummins ISF. From 2008 to 2010, Chrysler was installed on the Volga Cyber ​​passenger car. Unfortunately, after 2010, the production of Nizhny Novgorod cars with American internal combustion engines stopped completely.

The oil filter oil should be changed every 10 thousand km; the air filter is recommended to be changed every 15 thousand km. Taking into account the fact that when draining the oil in the system there is always a little left, 4.8 liters are required to replace it. The coolant for the engine is antifreeze or antifreeze; the radiator on the Volga 31105 requires 10 liters.

During maintenance, in addition to changing the oil and oil filter, it is recommended to perform the following types of work:

  • Check the coolant level in the engine cooling system;
  • Measure compression in cylinders;
  • Inspect the internal combustion engine to detect oil leaks;
  • Inspect the spark plugs after removing them;

Compared to its predecessor, the appearance of the Chrysler GAZ 31105 has undergone significant changes. By the way, this particular version of GAZ 31105 differed from other modifications of this model range in its unique radiator grille design. The designers changed not only the radiator grille, but also the front fenders, bumper and hood. The wide bumper comfortably houses fog lamps, stylish chrome trims and black plastic inserts. The hood turned out to be quite original and unusual for domestic cars.

Firstly, the stamping in the central part of the Volga Chrysler hood smoothly transitions into a convex radiator grille. Secondly, upon careful inspection it turned out that the hood and radiator grille were one piece. In addition, the design of the head optics unit was completely changed. The angular headlights were replaced by more modern teardrop-shaped headlights produced in the city of Vyazniki. The common unit, which includes headlights with optical elements for high and low beam, as well as a turn signal, has a common high-strength optical diffuser with a “free” surface.

Thanks to this, the lighting of both the road surface and the side of the road has become more intense and uniform. The rear side stands out in that the trunk opening is now lowered to the level of the bumper, which has significantly increased the convenience of loading luggage. This can be noted as another result of the influence of modern trends in the automotive industry. In addition, the new Volga Chrysler received new external door handles and locks that close almost silently and guarantee reliable locking of the doors. The overall dimensions of the GAZ 31105 are (height x width x length): 1455 x 1800 x 4921 millimeters. The wheelbase length is 2800 millimeters, ground clearance is 156 millimeters. For several years, upon separate order, it was possible to obtain the “business class” model GAZ 311055, which was distinguished by an extended wheelbase (+300 mm) and elongated doors (+150 mm). Regarding the interior, it is enough to note that leading German design studios took part in its development, including Engineering + Design AG (EDAG) and Hormann Rawena. The main innovations affected the instrument panel and interior lighting system, the new steering wheel houses the radio control, and a multi-position “joystick” is used to adjust the mirrors. Car owners give different advice, but generally many recommend replacing the belt after 80 thousand km. In general, it is better to check the condition of the belt from time to time.

Checking the condition of the timing belt is easy:

  • We turn off the engine;
  • Remove the upper timing case;
  • We do an external inspection. If the belt has small cracks on the cord or there are delaminations, you need to prepare for replacement.

However, any internal combustion engine cannot tolerate overheating. As a result of boiling of the coolant in the radiator, it is possible that the piston rings may become stuck or the pistons will burn out. If malfunctions occur in the crank mechanism, the internal combustion engine will have to be dismantled, and in this case the engine will need to be overhauled.

Various malfunctions can occur in the motor, but by what signs are they determined? What are the signs of a faulty motor:

  • Loss of power, engine does not gain speed;
  • Unstable operation, internal combustion engine “troits”;
  • There were knocks;
  • When the engine is running, popping sounds (shots) are heard in the muffler or in the intake manifold;
  • The engine does not start;
  • Vibration appeared in the car;
  • Engine oil is leaking.

If the engine has stalled, the reason must be sought either in the internal combustion engine itself or in the electronic control system. The easiest way to start is with diagnostics. Before carrying out computer diagnostics, you should first open the hood and inspect the engine compartment. Perhaps the fault is just a high-voltage wire that has fallen off.


Also, with the engine running, you can determine which cylinder has stopped working. To do this, disconnect the wires from the cylinders one by one. If the nature of the engine operation does not change when the wire is disconnected, then this cylinder does not work. To check, you will have to remove the air filter housing with the air duct, otherwise it will be difficult to get to the high-voltage wires.

However, checking the operation of the cylinders by removing the wires is the “old-fashioned” method; disconnecting the cylinders is much easier to do using a diagnostic scanner. But if it is not available, then it is better to turn to diagnosticians for help. It is easy to check the malfunction of the high-voltage wires themselves - to check you need either a dark room or the dark time of day.

The Cruiser engine on the Volga 31105 has taken root very well. Reliable and unpretentious, it can easily travel 200 thousand km without repair. Of course, you need to take care of the engine - change the engine oil on time, monitor the oil and coolant levels in the radiator. But without maintenance, even the ZMZ 402 motor will not withstand it and will break. Chrysler 2.4, like the ZMZ 406, has four valves per cylinder, that is, it is a DOHC engine.

The engine consumes fuel economically; on the highway at a speed of 90 km/h it is quite possible to keep within 8 liters per 100 km.

The Chrysler fuel system is an electronically controlled injector. The injector can be diagnosed, just like on the ZMZ 406 engine, using error codes when the ignition is turned on. But unlike the Trans-Volga version, the new control unit on the Chrysler 2.4 costs disproportionately more.
