Oil change for Toyota Corolla: step-by-step instructions

The reliability of any car largely depends on regular and timely maintenance. Changing the Toyota Corolla oil is one of the main operations in the list of routine maintenance that is regularly carried out during the operation of this popular car.

Information! The Japanese passenger car Toyota Corolla, known to all car enthusiasts, has been in mass production for more than 50 years (1966). During this time, constantly improving (11 generations), more than 40 million cars were produced. It has been repeatedly recognized as the most reliable in the compact car class.

Getting ready for replacement

Replacing used motor oil, or as it is sometimes called “waste oil,” must be carried out in strict accordance with the requirements of the vehicle’s operating manual.

What kind of oil to pour

The type of engine oil that needs to be poured into the engine of a Toyota Corolla car is necessarily indicated in the operating instructions and depends on the year it was produced.

At the same time, the Toyota Motor Corporation (1937) recommends using original Toyota Engine Oil or similar products from well-known companies Castrol, Mobil, etc.

  • Toyota Corolla engines from 1st to 9th generation (1966-2008)

For engines installed in cars manufactured before 2009, motor oil that meets the requirements of the international standards API SL and ACEA A3/B4 is suitable. Automotive lubricants manufactured according to these standards provide reliable protection of power units from wear in any operating modes and climatic conditions. They are also recommended for use during extended oil change intervals. This group includes oils with viscosity 0W30, 5W40, etc.

  • Toyota Corolla engines from 9th to 11th generation (2006 - present)

Oil for engines installed in modern cars must comply with the international standard ILSAC GF-5. They are characterized by a low phosphorus content, which contributes to a low content of environmentally harmful substances in the exhaust gases. In addition, auto lubricants manufactured in accordance with this standard reduce wear of engine parts and help reduce fuel consumption.

  • Toyota Corolla power units running on diesel fuel

When choosing an auto lubricant for a diesel engine, you need to pay attention to the presence or absence of a particulate filter. At the same time, for car engines with installed particulate filters, it is recommended to use oils of the Low SAPS category, which are characterized by low phosphorus and sulfur content, as well as low sulfate ash content. Their use helps reduce fuel consumption and protect parts from premature wear. This category includes oils that meet the ACEA C2 standard (0W-30, 5W-30, etc.).

As for cars that do not have a particulate filter, lubricants that meet ACEA A5/B5 and API SL/CF standards are recommended for their engines. They significantly reduce wear on engine parts. Also, having high resistance to oxidation, oils of this category can be used for quite a long time under the most severe operating conditions.

Recommendations for selection

When choosing engine oil, specialists working at service stations recommend giving preference to the following products:

  • recommended by the vehicle manufacturer;
  • the year and month of manufacture of which coincides with the date of replacement “working out”.

Preparatory stage

The process of changing consumables in a Toyota Corolla car is not too complicated; it is only important to understand the principle of the procedure, know the basics and consistently follow the instructions. Experts recommend that you be especially careful about those machines that were manufactured abroad; as practice shows, their parts should be looked after carefully, which will significantly extend the service life of movable property. Only branded oils should be poured into the power unit of a Toyota Corolla car; this recommendation is given by the manufacturer in the machine’s operating manual.

Oil for Toyota Corolla must definitely be of high quality; many experts prefer to use original substances. This type of fluid is called “Toyota Motor oil”. As a rule, it can be found in many automobile service centers and stores. Naturally, this liquid can be purchased from an official dealer; you should not neglect ordering the necessary goods via the Internet.

The Toyota Corolla engine should be filled with a volume of oil that corresponds to its cubic capacity. Toyota Corolla, as a rule, is equipped with power units that have a volume of about 4.2 liters. (everything will depend not only on the year of manufacture of the vehicle, but also on the configuration). Many experienced motorists base the issue of the volume of new oil required on the amount of drained oil.

If this is the first time a motorist is pouring oil into a Toyota Corolla, it would be a good idea to read the operating instructions. The developed manual will help to unambiguously answer all the questions of concern; it clearly indicates the volume of the internal combustion engine, according to which any motorist will be able to calculate the required amount of oil. More detailed information can be obtained from the service book, however, it is best to focus on 4.2 liters.

It is equally important to know the period after which the oil should be changed in a Toyota Corolla car. Motorists who operate this vehicle should take into account that such consumables are replaced every 10 thousand km. However, you should not adhere to these recommendations if the car owner begins to notice malfunctions in the operation of his car; as a rule, they are often caused by the use of low-quality material. In this case, it is better to replace consumables in advance by replacing the used oil and filter.

Engine oil volume

Over the years, Toyota Corolla cars have been equipped with a variety of power units, differing in both cylinder displacement, power, and torque.

Depending on which engine is installed in a particular model, the amount of oil that is poured into the engine can vary from 3.5 liters (cylinder volume 1.3 liters, power 84 hp) to 4.3 liters (cylinder volume 2.4 l, power 158 hp).

What oil to use and change interval

For different modifications of Toyota Corolla, experienced mechanics use different oils. Since each motor is developed according to standards that are recommended only for this model and not for another. Accordingly, the oil will be developed only according to these standards.

Attention! The volume of lubricant poured also depends on the engine modification.

To change the oil on a Toyota Corolla with a 150 body, you need to buy synthetic:

  • Motul 810W20;
  • Shell Hx8 5W-40;
  • Toyota GF-5 SN 5W30.

To change the oil in a Toyota Corolla 120 engine, oil from any manufacturer according to the 5W30 standard or semi-synthetic 10 W30 is suitable. The car will start immediately even in twenty-degree frost.

Only original lubricants should be used. Cheap Chinese fakes will lead to rapid engine failure. And the volume of lubricating fluid depends on the modification of the engine.

Here is a list of which engines require how much oil:

  • model 2NZ-FE with a volume of 1.3 liters – 3.7 liters;
  • model 4ZZ-FE with a volume of 1.4 liters - 4.7 l;
  • NZ from 1.5 l – 3.7 l;
  • 1.6 l modification 3ZZ-FE – 3.8 l;
  • 1ZZ-FE from 1.8 l – 3.8 l;
  • 2.0 l – volume and modification 3ZR-FE needs 4.2 l;
  • and the AZ model's 2.4-liter engines consume 4.3 liters.

The manufacturer specifies in the operating book to replace the lubricant in the Toyota Corolla 150 body and any other body after traveling 10,000 kilometers. But this information is for standard operating conditions. In Russian reality, experienced mechanics advise changing it after 5000 km. But new models released after 2014 can travel 10 thousand km with the same lubricant.

Attention! Be sure to change the filter device along with the lubricating fluid. It is not recommended to wash the old one and put it back in place. This will lead to vehicle failure.

All Toyota Corolla engines have the same structure. Therefore, car owners should not have any problems finding a filler neck. So the drain plug of the Toyota Corolla engine is located at the bottom, and the filler neck is at the top. A dipstick is screwed into it, and it is also a plug. Using a dipstick, you can check the quantity and quality of lubricant.

Changing the oil

The oil filter and oil filter must be changed regularly every 10 thousand kilometers. At the same time, experts recommend shortening this interval and replacing it after 5-7 thousand kilometers (depending on operating conditions).

IMPORTANT! The classic oil filter in a metal casing was installed on power units of the Toyota Motor Corporation until 2010. Currently, a special filter insert is used instead, which, when replaced, is inserted into a special plastic cap. All other operations are identical.

Complete replacement of transmission fluid in automatic transmission

A complete oil change in an automatic transmission can be done in two ways:

  • using professional equipment;
  • manually.

I think everything is clear to you with the equipment: connect it to the automatic transmission cooling system and start the procedure. That's all.

A full manual change is done identically to a partial one, only after installing the automatic transmission pan and replenishing the lubricant in the machine, you should remove the cooling system return hose and insert it into a five-liter bottle. Then start the Toyota engine and wait until the oil that pours into the bottle changes its color to light. You can even alternate between drain and flood.

After the changes have occurred, top up and drive the Toyota. Check the level.

Tools

Before you begin the oil change procedure, you need to prepare the appropriate tools, accessories and auxiliary materials. In general, in addition to new motor oil, their list includes:

  1. a special oil filter puller (belt or chain) or a wrench for removing the oil insert cap (code 09228-06501);
  2. funnel;
  3. oil filter or insert;
  4. socket wrench (head) 14;
  5. screwdriver;
  6. container for draining old auto lubricant (at least 5 l);
  7. latex gloves;
  8. rags.

Partial oil change in Toyota automatic transmission

Partial oil changes in the automatic transmission of a Toyota car are carried out in several stages. You can read more about how the lubricant is changed in different modifications of the car on the following pages:

  • Toyota Prado;
  • Land Cruiser 200;
  • Rav 4;
  • Toyota Camry.

In general terms, the stages of the mining shift will be as follows:

  1. Warm up the automatic transmission and place the Toyota in the pit.
  2. Plug the pan and drain the old transmission fluid.
  3. Unscrew the pan bolts and remove it.
  4. Clean the pan.
  5. Remove the filter if it is located under the valve body. There are filters that are changed only during major repairs.
  6. Install the new one and put the pan back on.
  7. Fill the new transmission.

At this point, the change of transmission in the automatic transmission is considered complete. Now I will tell you about ways to completely replace the exhaust in a Toyota automatic.

Characteristics of original oil for Corolla

As indicated in the technical description of the Toyota Corolla automatic transmission, the following brands of oil are used in models produced in 1993 and newer:

  • ATFType T;
  • Type T-II;
  • Type T-IV.

It is not permissible to mix ATF TYPE T and TYPE T-IV. The manufacturer recommends using ATF Type T-IV for automatic transmissions where earlier types of oils are used. For example, Toyota Type T-II and T-III.

The newest option is TOYOTA ATF WS (suitable for units produced in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and later). This is a synthetic fluid with a low viscosity index. Must be used in machines for which it is specified in the “User Manual”. It cannot be mixed with other oils, because... This type of fluid absorbs moisture, which can cause transmission failure. It is recommended to use an open TOYOTA ATF WS container only once.

The specification for ATF WS fluid is given below.

Verification procedure

Checking the oil level in a Toyota automatic transmission is performed after placing the car on a flat surface. The poured liquid should correspond to o as shown in the figure.

Photo: checking the level using a dipstick rod on which control marks are applied. You cannot fill in more quantities “in reserve”, or less than the required volume. If underfilling is detected, we add it to the control mark. You need to check the level regularly.
