Diesel GAZ-2217 Sobol with Cummins engine

All engines are for Gazelle. Description, modifications: ZMZ-405, 406, 402, 409, UMZ-4216, Cummins 2.8

The production vehicles are considered one of the most popular light-duty trucks in the CIS countries.
This model entered mass production in 1994. Since then, several modifications and improvements have been released to improve reliability, service life and ease of use. Modifications to the Gazelle engine are also not uncommon. The most popular among them can be identified:

Each of them has its own characteristics and its own modifications. It should be noted that even experienced engine repair technicians sometimes get confused about them. What can we say about ordinary drivers? To correctly buy spare parts for engines, you need to know some features. This will be discussed in this article.

Engine ZMZ-405

The 405 Gazelle engine is used for cars produced by GAZ. It is part of the ZMZ 406 series engine family. This is a fuel-injected 4-cylinder engine with a displacement of 2,464 cc. cm.

Among the available modifications, the following should be highlighted:

The engine is used in GAZ cars of the GAZ-31102, GAZ-31105, GAZ Gazelle and GAZ Sobol models, as well as some Fiat models.

The most modern ZMZ-405 Euro-3 engine meets international standards. All toxicity standards were taken into account.

For revision

Gorky light-duty trucks generally create a good impression. Intelligent improvements and changes in design allow us to hope for a bright future for “gas” vans. I liked the torquey engine and the modified gearbox.

Another question is the 4x4 versions of GAZelle and Sobol. Permanent all-wheel drive noticeably interferes with the cars' operation. They became heavier and clumsier. The constant noise from the transmission is annoying. And the cross-country ability of light-tonnage vehicles is not impressive. Perhaps it's time to abandon the old "Soviet" transfer case and look for a worthy imported replacement. In the meantime, it’s better to be content with the rear-wheel drive versions of the GAZelle and Sobol.

Engine ZMZ-406

The 406 Gazelle engine has been in mass production since 1996. Usually installed on Gazelle, as well as Volga passenger cars. The 406 engine is quite labor-intensive to operate due to the presence of a complex fuel supply system, as well as an electronic control system. It has 4 cylinders and a displacement of 2.28 liters, and its rated power is 106.6 kW. Both an injection fuel system and a carburetor are used.

There are 3 popular modifications of the ZMZ-406 engine:

ZMZ-406 is very popular and is considered an excellent choice for Gazelle and Sobol.

Which Sable engine is better?

A gazelle is a machine used to transport goods.
The heavier the contents, the more gasoline is consumed. A lot of waste also occurs when cargo is transported over long distances. In this regard, the gazelle is equipped with an engine from a foreign car. Before carrying out such a procedure, you need to thoroughly learn all the nuances and dimensions of your car. After choosing a motor for a Gazelle, you need to compare the functionality of the car and the technical data of the selected motor; the size of the power unit and its dimensions play a significant role. Engine ZMZ-409

The ZMZ-409 Gazelle engine also deserves special attention. It should be noted that this internal combustion engine is designed for passenger cars and utility vehicles of the UAZ brand. However, it can be found on some Gazelles. Production began in 1996.

ZMZ-409 is a 4-cylinder engine with a volume of 2.693 liters and a power of 94.1 kW. Modern variations of internal combustion engines comply with Euro-4 requirements. Fuel consumption reaches 12 liters. At the same time, the ZMZ-409 has the same cylinder block as the ZMZ-405 model. Among the modifications it is necessary to highlight:

Diesel engines Gazelle

The GAZ-560 diesel engine (Steyr license) appeared on the Gazelle in 1998, modification 5602 met Euro-4 requirements, the engine was installed on the car until 2008. Diesel has remarkable qualities:

  • good traction;
  • excellent dynamics;
  • low fuel consumption.

The turbodiesel is made using a monoblock design - the head and the block are a single unit. On the one hand, this is a big plus - there is no gasket, and there is nothing to burn here.

On the other hand, there is a significant disadvantage - the GAZ-560 is difficult to repair. In total, there were few engines under the Austrian license; despite all the advantages of the diesel engine, it was abandoned:

  • the engine tolerates low-quality fuel very poorly;
  • spare parts are not always easy to buy;
  • GAZ-560 is expensive to maintain, and parts for it are not cheap.

The Cummins engine, installed in the gazelle since 2010, has excellent performance and a long service life (up to 500 thousand kilometers), but it requires regular maintenance, high-quality oil and fuel. In Russian reality, an engine can fail even after 100 thousand kilometers, and Cummins repairs are expensive.

Guys, tell me who used different engines on gazelles (I don’t mean Japanese swaps) since I myself only used 406-405. Engines, for example, 406 carb, -406 eng, - 405 euro2, -405 euro3, -409, - rat, stayer, ... well, stone. All the pros and cons of these engines. Which one is more budget-friendly in terms of spare parts and consumption.

Engine Cummins 2.8 "Gazelle"

The Cummins 2.8 engine is installed on GAZ “Gazelle” and GAZ “Next” vehicles, as well as GAZ “Business”. This is a 4-cylinder engine with a power of 88.3 kW and a volume of 2.781 liters. Runs on diesel fuel. The cylinder block is made of gray cast iron with milled cylinder liners. The crankshaft is also made of gray cast iron and is well balanced.

We looked at the main types of engines for Gazelles and their most popular modifications. We hope that this article was useful to you!

NOT A LAND ROVER

Recognizing the Sobol 4×4 as a full-fledged SUV is perhaps too much. In terms of layout, suspension characteristics and many small details, it is not an all-terrain vehicle. On the other hand, compared to modern allegedly SUVs or crossovers, as well as direct competitors - all-wheel drive vans - our "Sable 4x4" is a model: it will not sink in the mud and will quickly rush along the asphalt. The secret is in a successful and simple mechanical all-wheel drive design: longitudinal arrangement of the engine with gearbox, separate transfer case, Spicer axles. All this goes well with the proven version of the utility vehicle.

GAZ-27527 Sobol

Having developed a light-duty truck in 1994, the Gorky Automobile Plant decided not to rest on its laurels and keep up with the times. Despite its small size, the GAZ 3302 was not always economically justified - sometimes a very compact vehicle was required to transport small quantities of cargo.

This is what the new Sobol GAZ-27527 car looks like

So, at the turn of 1998 and 1999, GAZ began serial production of a new model range of commercially convenient cars, united under the name “Sobol”.

Modifications

The all-metal van GAZ 2752 was adopted as the base model. With a carrying capacity of 0.9 tons, the vehicle has the right to drive even into the center of Moscow, where during the day a travel restriction is introduced for vehicles with a carrying capacity of over 1 ton. The maneuverability and compactness of the Sobol allows the mini-truck to freely penetrate tight yards, while the car is quite economical and comfortable.

Design and arrangement of passenger seats in the GAZ-2752

After 2003, the GAZ 2752 was restyled twice, and the latest modification, Sobol Business (since 2010), meets all modern requirements for this class of car in terms of equipment, comfort and ecology.

“Sable” 2752 has modifications in body type and wheel drive. According to the body type, the car can be a three-seater or a seven-seater van. In the 3-seater version, the total carrying capacity of the car is 0.75-0.9 tons, in the 7-seater version this figure is slightly less - 0.75-0.8 tons. Both modifications can be either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The all-wheel drive 4x4 model is called GAZ 27527, while the entire model range is equipped with different types of engines - both gasoline and diesel.

All-wheel drive

The GAZ 27527 version was created to increase the vehicle's cross-country ability in difficult road conditions. The model has also been produced since 1998; in 2003, the external appearance of the car changed somewhat, and modernization affected the interior. It is important that since 2003 the engine range has changed - the Sobol began to be equipped with a ZMZ 405 injection engine and an Ulyanovsk-made internal combustion engine with a volume of 2.9 liters. Since 2010, when the next modification 25727 “Sobol Business” went into production, the car began to be equipped with a 2.8-liter Cummins turbocharged diesel engine.

"Sobol Business"

The quality of GAZ products can hardly be called excellent, and sometimes it is completely worthless.

But, oddly enough, many Soboley car owners, although they remember Nizhny Novgorod car manufacturers with an unkind word, are still not going to exchange their “war horse” for an imported analogue. And there are several reasons for this:

The following improvements have appeared on the Business model:

UMZ-4216 motor installed on Sobol-Business

Since 2010, the automobile plant began installing a Chinese-made Cummins 2.8-liter engine in the Gazelles and Sables lineup. Despite the fact that the motor is Chinese, it turned out to be of very high quality, and compared to the UMZ-4216 it has a number of advantages. This internal combustion engine has excellent technical characteristics and a long service life; the mileage before major repairs is about 500 thousand km.

Cummins has only one drawback - the price of a car with it increases noticeably.

According to reviews from car owners, the Ulyanovsk engine is much inferior to the “Chinese” in all respects. UMZ consumes a lot of fuel, oil seals often leak, and there are also many complaints about the build quality. Business models (in variants with Cummins) are equipped with pre-heaters.

Here are some technical characteristics of the Sable GAZ 2752 combi (7-seater):

Technical characteristics of the chassis, transmission, brake system, steering:

According to factory technical data, fuel consumption at a speed of 60 km/h for the new Sobol 27527 should be 8.5 liters, and at a speed of 80 km/h it is 10.5 liters.

Distinctive advantages of the Japanese engine over the “native” one

Nissan. The installed engine will go through actual mileage and will not require repairs. Only oil and filter changes. Unlike a native or Chinese engine, which creates problems already at 50,000 miles. Sometimes repairs are required earlier. With a mileage of 150 thousand, the engine requires major overhaul.

Very good traction at low revs. The Japanese engine installed on the Gazelle behaves perfectly in some situations on the road. No need to upshift. In winter, there is no slippage when the car is stuck in a snowdrift. In the first downshift, first axle, slightly pressed gas pedal and the Gazelle drives out of a difficult place on its own. Unlike the original engine of the car. In a difficult situation, the car is tearing itself apart with all its strength.

Standard Gazelle: 9 l. (per 100 km.) at permissible speed on the open road; 10 l. (per 100 km.) at the permitted speed in us. At the “Native” point, the Gazelle engine “eats” from 15 to 20 hp. (per 100 km) permissible average speed.

Gazelle extended: 10 (per hundred km.) at permissible speed in a populated area; 11l. (per hundred km.) at the permitted speed on the highway. Sable: 9 l. (per 100 km.) at average speed.

Strong axles, forced electric locking, a lowered transfer case, a very spacious, roomy interior and comfortable seats for both driver and passengers, air conditioning, a lot of different tuning - all this GAZ Sobol 4x4 is an excellent preparation for an expeditionary SUV.

Of course, in order for this hefty minibus to drive on serious off-road conditions, you still need to work on its tuning, but with a little modification, the all-wheel drive GAZ Sobol is quite capable of driving on moderate off-road conditions, and the comfortable conditions in the cabin also allow you to get to this moderate off-road terrain on public roads many thousands of kilometers.

When creating an expeditionary GAZ Sobol, it is not a bad idea to study foreign experience. Firstly, there are many more car travelers abroad, and secondly, there is simply a huge number of companies involved in tuning SUVs.

Here is a good example of a campervan based on Iveco Daily. I have no doubt that our Sable can be made into a camper no worse...
