The degree of production of individual elements of the Nissan Teana J32 engine largely depends on how the vehicle is operated and maintained. High-quality engine oil and replacement frequency directly affect the level of wear of rubbing parts. In this case, a generally valid recommendation will be to reduce friction between the rubbing elements of the motor and maintain the recommended temperature.
The secret to engine reliability does not always depend on the manufacturer, but also on the car owner, who properly maintains the engine, including timely oil changes.
Saving on oil for the Nissan Teana engine entails accelerated wear of its components. And therefore, using only high-quality oil and its timely replacement ensures proper operation of the power unit. The use of low-quality oil, in turn, leads to a number of malfunctions, including expensive ones. When choosing oil for the Teana J32 engine, the key criterion is climate and operating conditions.
Modern Nissan engines typically use low-viscosity synthetic oils 0W30 and 5W30, which reduce engine friction, reduce wear and improve fuel economy. These motor oils are used by most Nissan Teana owners, and in some climate zones it can also be used year-round. Taking into account seasonality, load, mileage, it is also possible to fill the engine with 0W20, 0W40, 5W40 motor oils.
When to change
The cycle of heating and cooling the oil steadily reduces its protective properties, as a result of which the oil gradually becomes less effective and for trouble-free operation of the engine it certainly needs to be changed on time.
Nissan recommends changing your engine oil every 8,000 to 15,000 km or once a year, whichever comes first. But in practice, everything is not quite the same, since the oil in the engine is affected by several conditions: driving style, the condition of the engine itself, the correct/incorrect class of oil that is poured into the power unit.
When making short trips every day, loading the engine or moving more in the city than outside the city, an oil change is necessary every 5000-7500 km.
Engine hours
Each car owner has a special route, so in this case, first of all, it is worth counting the engine hours.
The engine watch will best tell you when to change the oil in a Teana engine:
- 250 mph - under difficult conditions;
- 300-320 mph - appropriate for partial use of the car, or outside the city;
To determine the number of engine hours, you need to divide the mileage by the average speed, for example: 5000 km / 20 km/h = 250 mph, which is actually the best interval and real speed in city traffic.
Engine hours: ...
Oil compliance with service life hours:
Oil type | Resource, engine hours |
Mineral | 150 |
Semi-synthetic | 250 |
Synthetic oils | |
API SJ/SL | 250 |
API SM/SN | 300-350 |
Polyalphaolefins | 350-400 |
Esthers | 400-450 |
You need to change the oil more often when: towing a trailer, using a roof rack, short trips of no more than 10 km.
Progress of work on changing engine oil in the Nissan Teana 2.5 engine
In our case, the work is performed on a NISSAN TEANA with a VQ25DE engine. But on other motors this procedure is performed in a similar way. Consumables will be the same, as will the amount of oil. On QR20DE, VQ23DE and VQ35DE engines, about 4 liters of new oil will be required. The original is sold in 5 liter canisters, so this canister will be enough in any case.
1. Before you start changing the oil in the Nissan Teana 2.5 engine, you need to dismantle the protection and warm up the engine to operating temperature. We remove the protection in order to get to the drain plug. If the protection has a special technological hole for this, then it is not necessary to dismantle it. We warm up the engine until the fan starts working. When the fan turns off, we go down under the car and proceed directly to changing the engine oil in the Nissan Teana 2.5 engine.
2. Using a 14″ wrench, unscrew the drain plug and, replacing the waste container, drain it. Be extremely careful at this point, as the oil is hot and can burn you if it gets on your skin.
3. When the oil has stopped dripping, screw the drain plug back into place and do not forget to install a new O-ring on it.
4. Now you need to unscrew the oil filter. This is done from under the right fender liner. There is enough space, so we just unscrew the filter by hand. Be prepared for some more oil to leak out of the filter, so either place some kind of container under it or place a rag.
5. The new filter is installed in reverse order, but it is necessary to lubricate the filter rubber band with engine oil before installation. The filter is tightened by hand.
6. We proceed to filling the engine with new engine oil. Insert a funnel into the oil filler neck and add fresh oil.
We control the oil level using a dipstick. Fill in new oil until its level reaches the maximum mark. After this, close the filler cap and start the engine. We wait for the oil pressure light to go out. Then we turn off the engine and wait a couple of minutes. We take out the dipstick and look at the level. If the level is established between the MIN and MAX marks, then you can stop working - changing the oil in the Nissan Teana 2.5 engine is complete. Otherwise, add the required amount of liquid.
Which one to choose
Which engine oil to choose is apparently one of the main questions when carrying out maintenance. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that there will ever be a universal answer, since when choosing a motor oil, you need to take into account the conditions in which the vehicle is used.
- engine load;
- climate;
- engine condition and mileage;
Megapolis - provides the most difficult conditions for the motor due to heavy traffic, short distances and frequent stops. Quite the contrary, the engine is affected by the suburban mode - one speed and stable speed, which allows replacement at 10,000 km if the car is used more on the highway than in the city.
The next point in choosing is the climate. While for Teana, which is used in a warm climate zone, 5W-30 oil (maximum 5W-40) is recommended, Teana owners using a car in a cold climate zone need to lower the oil viscosity - 0W-20, but 0W- is better. thirty. With such lubricating oils, the power unit operates more quietly, starts without problems in cold weather, and in certain cases fuel consumption is reduced.
The next factor is the condition of the motor. After 100,000 km, engine parts wear out and it is advisable to use a thicker oil, for example 0W-40 or 5W-40.

The need to change the oil in the variator
Most vehicle manufacturers around the world promote the view that it is not necessary to change the oil in a car's radiator. However, most Nissan Teana owners will not agree with this opinion. An unbalanced level or low quality of transmission lubricant in the Nissan Teana j32 CVT transmission leads to complete or partial malfunction and loss of CVT function.
But what are the signs of the need to change the oil in the Nissan Teana j32 unit in question? Let's look at the main features:
- The original color and texture of the liquid have changed. Oil that has lost its functions gradually thickens, becomes heterogeneous, and metal particles are found in it. The color of the liquid takes on dirty, cloudy shades;
- The natural smell of gear lubricant is mixed with the smell of burning and soot;
- There is a lot of noise when the engine is running;
- The car accelerates poorly and drives jerkily;
- It is difficult to change gears;
- When the engine is idling, the engine vibrates strongly.
It is important to remember that problems with driving a Nissan Teana can arise not only when there is a lack of transmission lubricant, but also when there is an excess of it. You can check the technical fluid level in the variator using a dipstick. Step-by-step instructions for checking the oil using this part are provided below:
- The Nissan Teana j32 vehicle is installed on a flat horizontal surface;
- You get a dipstick, which is an elongated part with measuring indicators. The visible side of the part is usually yellow with a ring-shaped tip;
- This part of the Nissan Teana variator must be thoroughly wiped of any remaining oil;
- Immerse the dipstick again in Nissan Teana technical lubricant, then pull it out and study the indicators.

The more in demand the oil, the greater the chances of buying a fake. Therefore, it is extremely important to buy oil from a reliable supplier
What to choose?! Perhaps you need to make a personal decision based on the available range, financial capabilities, and the credibility of the seller. There is a large volume of fakes on the oil market, for this reason, you first need to contact the official distributor of the oil manufacturer.
Recommended brands of motor oils
The Japanese automaker recommends using original Nissan lubricants that meet the requirements for engines in Teana cars;
- according to the API index - marked SL or SM;
- according to ILSAC – GF-3 or GF-4;
- according to ACEA standards - with categories A1/B1, A3/B3, A3/B4, A5/B5, as well as C2 and C3, intended for internal combustion engines with catalysts and particulate filters.
The manufacturer also suggests using motor oils (MM) that correspond to the season of operation in terms of viscosity (SAE), preference is given to the 5W30 brand.
Many modern grades of MM from different manufacturers are suitable for engines of types VQ25 and QR25; the brands that have proven themselves to be the best are:
For Nissan 2.5 engines, semi-synthetic and synthetic oil is suitable; it is preferable to use PAO synthetics, but HC synthetics have also proven themselves to be quite good.
It is not advisable to fill in mineral oils, as they have less stable characteristics, which makes the engine difficult to start in cold weather, oil pressure drops to critically low values in hot weather, and oil consumption (waste) may increase.
The list of oils suitable for Teana engines is quite large, so we will note only some popular brands of 5W30:
- Shell HX-8;
- Mobil 1 X1;
- Castrol Magnatec A5;
- Valvoline Synpower FE;
- Liqui Moly Special LL;
- Shell Helix Ultra.
You can also use some domestically produced MMs, for example, Lukoil Lux (synthetics), but in any case it is important to use high-quality lubricants.
In order not to fall for a counterfeit, you need to purchase products only at specialized retail outlets, and it’s a good idea to make sure that the seller has a certificate.
How much to fill
The VQ25 and VQ35DE engine holds 4.3 liters of oil including the oil filter and 4.6 liters without the filter element.
Since a small amount of oil remains in the system during replacement, a little less oil is placed in the new system.
The information provided above is also relevant for other Nissan modifications that were equipped with VQ25 and VQ35DE engines:
