Tuning
The power of the OM604 can be increased by replacing the turbine with a more efficient one. However, in the case of a particular model, increasing power significantly increases fuel consumption, which makes such modifications economically unprofitable. Therefore, tuning the Mercedes-Benz OM604 is not widespread.

Problems and reliability of the Mercedes OM 606 engine (#461016)
The blocks of these engines are cast iron, with cylinder liners. The timing and fuel injection pump are driven by one double-row chain.
The younger 4-cylinder OM604 was produced only in naturally aspirated versions of 2.0 and 2.2 liters, with power ranging from 74 to 94 hp. Fuel injection on the “fours” was carried out by a Lucas EPIC distribution-type rotary single-piston pump with electronic control. This is a capricious and fuel-demanding pump.
“Fives” and “sixes” were equipped with in-line Bosch fuel injection pumps with mechanical (only on W124) or electronic control. There were both naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions. The 5-cylinder OM605 developed from 111 to 148 hp. The 6-cylinder OM606 produced from 134 to 174 hp.
On our YouTube channel you can watch the disassembly of the OM606.962 engine, removed from a 1998 Mercedes W210. The engine is damaged - its sump is broken. Such an engine was installed not only on the “eshka”, but also on the “Gelendvagen” and on the “one hundred and fortieth”.
Lifetime and reliability of old Mercedes
Mercedes diesels are very mechanically reliable. They really easily last a million km or more. If, of course, they receive more or less high-quality service, good oil and not the dirtiest diesel fuel.
Although it is believed that Mercedes prechamber diesel engines with 4 valves per cylinder (specifically, OM604, OM605 and OM606) are more capricious than their predecessors.
This diesel engine is still of interest to tuners, because it is relatively easy to “just for fun” get from 300 to 500 hp. It is enough to conjure with the turbine (install a high-performance one) and with the injection pressure.
List of internal combustion engine modifications
The OM646 internal combustion engine was produced in the following modifications:

- completed modifications of the second generation OM646 DE22 La EVO with a capacity of 400 horsepower.
All modifications require close attention and preventive maintenance annually. Since the valves of variable injection geometry become overgrown with carbon deposits and jam over time. A powerful engine needs fresh oil.
Engine ohm 604 technical specifications
A series of Mercedes OM 604 diesel engines of 2.0 and 2.2 liters were assembled from 1993 to 1999 and were installed on two models of the concern: C-Class in the W202 body or E-Class in the W210 body. For taxi services, it was offered derated to 75 hp. modification of the 2.2-liter diesel engine.
The R4 line also includes internal combustion engines: OM615, OM616, OM601, OM611, OM646 and OM651.
List of car models in which it was installed
The OM 646 De22La engine can be found on Mercedes C-class, CLK, E-class models. The OM646La engine is also installed on the following models:
- Mercedes Benz Sprinter Classic;
- Mercedes Benz Viano;
- Mercedes Benz Vito.
Attention! The engine that is installed on Mercedes Sprinter minibuses is slightly underdeveloped by the manufacturers, judging by the reviews of car owners. Its vital resource is underestimated. There is no oil pressure sensor on the panel. This leads to the fact that it is impossible to prevent the rotation of the main bearings in the block beds.
But we’ll talk about the weaknesses of the engine design below. Now let's look at the design features of the unit for Mercedes.

Disadvantages, breakdowns and problems of OM604
In terms of hardware, the motors are very reliable and have a service life of approximately 400 - 500 thousand km
The main problem of this diesel engine is the capricious Lucas fuel pump.
The gaskets in the fuel injection pump dry out over time, and not everyone will undertake its repair
The timing chain can already stretch for 200 - 250 thousand kilometers, which is fatal for the cylinder head
Also, the cylinder head is very afraid of overheating, sometimes it simply bursts

Review of faults and methods for repairing them
Frequent problems with the Mercedes OM646 are scuffing. Connecting rods 2 and 3 are deformed and the bearings wear out. All this happens after a mileage of 400 thousand kilometers, or under extreme operating conditions with much less mileage. Rubbing on the liner leads to knocking and stopping idling.
The solution would be to replace the crankshaft and bearings. If the bed is not particularly damaged due to the lifted liners, then experienced mechanics can still save it. Fixing it will be difficult and will cost money. The crankshaft bearings are checked for alignment.

Therefore, the Common Rail equipment becomes a problem. It most often causes malfunctions in the vehicle. The system is capricious. Loves high-quality and clean fuel. Although the design is simpler than that of fuel injection pumps with injectors. And the regulator in the ECU allows you to accurately dose fuel, avoiding overflow.
Bearing wear leads to oil leakage into the cold or hot part. This problem cannot be determined in a garage environment. Since you will need a special stand. Therefore, if a diesel engine begins to consume oil, it is time to take it to a service center for inspection.
Quick-release fittings most often dry out in the first years of engine operation due to overheating. The system becomes airy. The engine starts to sneeze and stalls. Experienced mechanics recommend replacing the fitting.
A malfunction of the generator pulley is accompanied by noise. If you miss this moment, you can wear out the belt tensioner. Solved by installing a new pulley.
Failure of the solenoid valves leads to a decrease in power of the Mercedes engine.
Timing chain stretching is a favorite problem with the OM646 engine. Solved by replacing the chain with a new one. The cylinder head camshaft drive also often wears out.
Therefore, experienced mechanics warn novice car owners not to skimp on oil, filters and other consumables. If preventive repairs cost the car owner 5,000 rubles, then major repairs will cost 25,000 rubles.
By contacting the service center on time, it is possible to identify the problem at an early stage. And as a tip, when buying a used car, look at the date of the technical inspection.
Engine Mercedes OM604
The 4-cylinder diesel engine OM604 is the younger brother of the 5-cylinder OM605 and 6-cylinder OM606.
Structurally, Mercedes diesel engines of the 602/604/605/606 series are very similar - they all have a cast iron block and aluminum heads with 4 valves per cylinder and mechanical injection pumps (see below)
The OM 604 engine was produced in two versions: 1997 cc (from 1996 to 1998) and 2155 cc. (from 1993 to 1998). Equipped with an EVE injection system ( E
lektronic
V
erteiler
E
inspritzpumpe) manufactured by Lucas.

this
system was called EDC ( Elektronic Diesel C
onrol).
Pre-chamber diesel engines OM 604 (they were also called swirl-chamber diesel engines) are named after the method of mixing and preparing the working mixture: as a result of the piston stroke, at the end of the compression stroke, air is forced through the thin opening of the preliminary combustion chamber (prechamber), while swirling strongly. Where the fuel injection actually takes place. Thus, fuel combustion occurs not in the cylinder, but in a specially designed chamber, which is located in the cylinder head. After ignition, gases escape through the hole into the cylinder in the opposite direction and press on the piston, as a result of which the working stroke occurs.
Engine Description
ATTENTION! A completely simple way to reduce fuel consumption has been found! Don't believe me? An auto mechanic with 15 years of experience also didn’t believe it until he tried it. And now he saves 35,000 rubles a year on gasoline! Read more"
The design of the OM604 is practically no different from other engines in this diesel series. The cylinder block is cast iron, the heads are 24-valve, and the fuel injection pump is of a mechanical type. Such a motor is called a vortex chamber motor, since during the power stroke the air swirls strongly as it passes through the preliminary chamber. Fuel injection is also carried out here. Thus, diesel fuel combustion takes place in a special type of chamber located in the cylinder head. The remaining gases rush into the cylinder, acting on the piston. These are the main performance indicators of this power unit.
OM604 double overhead camshaft DOHC type. This design replaced the old one with a SOHC camshaft. Direct fuel injection.
OM604 was produced in two working volumes:
Both versions were equipped with an injection system from Lucas - extremely unreliable and problematic. First of all, the seals of these mechanisms fail, which over time become brittle and leak. As for electric pumps from Bosch, they were installed on the latest versions of the OM604 engines. Among the features of these motors I would like to highlight:
We also note that the OM604 was the last junior prechamber engine in the history of Mercedes-Benz.
