For a hunter with a crossbow, the main type of prey is wild boar. In Russia, deer, which are popular in America, are not particularly common. Although they are also hunted. Before starting the review, all hunters should be reminded that in Russia hunting with a crossbow is prohibited, both for wild boar and other animals. But in many countries such hunting is permitted by law. Therefore, it is interesting to learn about the features of hunting a wild boar with a crossbow, its features.
Why is there a ban?
Hunting wild boar with a crossbow is prohibited in Russia for several reasons:
- The weapon belongs to the category of highly lethal.
- A crossbow is a quiet device that does not produce loud shots. This makes it comparable to a weapon with a silencer, which is prohibited for civilians in Russia.
- A crossbow is a type of throwing weapon.
Advantages of crossbow hunting
Let's look at the experience of hunters from other countries to see why hunting a wild boar with a crossbow is so remarkable:
- Qualitatively new unforgettable sensations, which, in the opinion of many, cannot be obtained during a regular action with a firearm.
- The simplicity of the mechanism and its complete reliability. Fans of hunting know how sometimes there is a lot of fiddling around with a gun in the forest - it needs to be protected from moisture, debris, etc. The crossbow is not at all demanding in this regard.
- Great chances for glorious booty. The crossbow, as we have already noted, is an almost silent weapon. And the flight speed of his arrow (bolt) is up to 100 m/sec with its weight of 22-27 g!
- Lower “price” of a miss, in contrast to the same gun, which is ensured by the same noiselessness. There is a good chance that the animal will not notice an incorrectly thrown arrow, which cannot be said about an unsuccessful shot.
- Monetary price of the issue. You can choose a crossbow based on your capabilities - the cost of different types of this weapon varies significantly.
Advantages and disadvantages
In fact, there are quite a lot of these pros and cons, and they are both objective and subjective, but, nevertheless, we can highlight the following advantages in crossbows for hunting:
An exciting process in which both the hunter and his prey are balanced in their chances. Simplicity and reliability of the shooting device itself. Crossbows for hunting, produced in modern technological production, are made from high-quality materials and perform their function flawlessly in any weather. The speed of the arrow's flight is so high that it does not allow the victim to evade the shot, even animals with such qualities as speed and speed of movement. No noise when fired, which makes it possible not to scare away all the game in the area with shots. Relatively low cost and reusable arrows.
At the same time, crossbows for hunting have a number of limitations:
Inability to conduct targeted shooting at flying targets. Limited shot power, which does not allow hunting any animal. Silence. Many consider this not an advantage, but a disadvantage of this type of weapon. In the minds of these people, hunting with a bow and crossbow is nothing more than poaching.
Disadvantages of a crossbow
Let's also talk about the disadvantages of hunting wild boar with a crossbow:
- Shooting at moving targets, especially from a decent distance, is extremely difficult, as is taking a lead when firing. One can even argue that it is almost impossible to conduct targeted “fire” to kill with this type of hunting - one can only be content with more or less static targets.
- Silence can also be the reason for inhumane treatment of the animal - an unscrupulous hunter will not rush to end the dying torment of a wounded animal with the final shot, but will remain waiting in ambush for other prey.
- Ban on the territory of Russia - not every hunting enthusiast has the opportunity to travel to another state.
- If you already have a crossbow, you will not be able to obtain a license or permission to hunt not only wild boar, but also any other animal.
- Requires more refined aiming skills. Shooting accurately from 30-40 meters with a gun is not at all the same as hitting the target with a crossbow from the same distance.
Crossbow for boar
Although hunting with a crossbow is prohibited in Russia, hunters actively use this weapon to hunt animals. This is due to the fact that a crossbow for hunting is a silent weapon. The question is, who is most often attacked with a crossbow, the answer is Elk and wild boar. A crossbow for hunting wild boar must be selected carefully, taking into account every aspect of hunting it because there should be no mistakes.
The first thing to consider is the type of hunt. From a hiding place or from a tower, you can not pay attention to the weight of the weapon, and if you are hunting on foot, you should not take a heavy unit. Such a crossbow will frankly exhaust you. Keep in mind that the wild boar reacts quite sensitively to the hunter; sensing you 400-500 meters away, it will go on the run. It may happen that you need to quickly take aim and make an accurate shot, but now imagine that you are exhausted or even out of breath, and you also need to raise the gun, aim and hit - it’s difficult. All this is relevant if you are not physically ready for such conditions.
Let's look at the type of crossbows, taking into account the tension force, because the wild boar is a very tenacious animal and you can't go at it with a slingshot. You're not a kamikaze, are you? There is an opinion, and it is partly correct, that block crossbows are preferable for wild boar hunting, because they are more powerful, and you can’t really argue with that! We assure you that there are recursive models that allow you to catch even a bear. The disadvantage of recursive ones is that they are noticeably larger. It would seem that it’s nonsense, since I’m firing from a tower. True again, but if hunting on foot again, then what? Let's take into account the fact that wild boars like to be in thickets and dense places during the day, where a classic crossbow would make movement difficult. And as if on purpose, they appear in clearings and open places at night, while searching for food. Who hunted a wild boar with a crossbow at night? I do not know such! I can’t say that I’m the most experienced hunter, especially with a crossbow, but I’ll say it anyway, and forgive the expression - In general, I don’t really gravitate toward hunting with a crossbow, and even at night, it’s just some kind of masochism. As a matter of fact, they are walking during the day and have chosen a compound crossbow. Today there are many manufacturers in every part of the world. But there are world market leaders, so when I chose such a device, I settled on the Barnett company. This was due to several factors. Firstly, it is a very high-status company, has been on the market for a long time and has a lot of positive reviews, but not without negative ones. Secondly, the price of this brand suited me. For example, TenPoint produces cool things, but I can’t afford to pay 100,000 -130,000 rubles for it, I’m not ready to shell out that amount for a crossbow. I’m also not ready because I don’t use it very often when hunting.
In short, at that time I was looking for Barnett up to 50,000 rubles, but in the end I didn’t get it and settled on the Ghost 400 model, but I spent a little more than I planned. I also looked closely at the Predator CRT, but I was not satisfied with the weight of more than 4 kg. The Ghost model at that time cost me about 70,000 with reinforced shoulders, thanks to which I received a tension force of 80 kg, even a little more. Plus, the initial speed of the arrow of 120 meters per second completely satisfied me, the rate of fire and power in one package. It seems that everything is clear with a crossbow, but what about arrows? I read a lot, after which, armed with knowledge, I asked the seller. As a result, one company focused on cost, and another on material, from which I bought the ammunition. Now I know from experience that you can’t take aluminum arrows, no matter how they are advertised, this applies specifically to shooting at a wild boar. I advise you to take carbon arrows and not worry about anything. Aluminum ones can simply injure the animal, thereby making it angry, and you risk putting yourself in danger. Do you remember what kind of fangs boars have? Therefore, be as careful and professional as possible.
I won’t talk about how I zeroed the crossbow, but I’ll get straight to the point, especially since zeroing is not that difficult. In fact, knowing where the wild boar lives, you can easily approach it within shooting distance. I don’t like to catch an animal by surprise, and I myself hate such situations when you unexpectedly meet an animal, after which you fire at a running target. Be that as it may, I went after the boar with a crossbow. Knowing the places of the bathing places, I decided to sneak there. Everything is according to the canons and laws, against the wind with minimal noise. Unfortunately, I didn’t find the animal where I planned to find it. But I was just sure that one or even two would appear there, so I climbed a tree and set up a hiding spot in the swimming area. The result was not long in coming; I had to hang on a tree for 35 minutes and could conduct targeted shooting from a comfortable position. I admit, it was scary to use a crossbow for the first time to hit a wild boar, although the shots on the training targets were impressive. He shot and didn’t miss, it hit the heart area. What did I expect? I don’t know myself, but I would like the animal to fall dead, but this did not happen. He was clearly in shock and took off running, as if he was not wounded. I quickly got down and walked in the direction. Probably, they should have fired a second shot, but it was so “draped” that it was impossible to hit it with a homing gun. Literally after 80-100 meters he lay motionless with the arrow! Then, I didn’t take the risk and got the wounded one. Result: one carbon arrow, crossbow obviously for hunting wild boar 80 kg, hunted animal! And here is the Ghost 400:
To summarize, I would like to add that my friends tried to get a wild boar with a crossbow with a force of 65 kg. Everything was almost identical, but only after an accurate hit, the boar left and no one saw him again. Weak, capable of only wounding. but this method is also suitable if you are going with dogs. They will drive a wounded boar, but if you go solo, then 80 kg, with minimal noise!
Thank you for your attention, Alexander, Volgograd

Types of crossbow
There are two main types of crossbows for wild boar hunting:
- Recursive (classic). A simple, reliable and lightweight product - its weight does not exceed 2 kg. Perfect for long hunting tours.
- Blocky. Their weight is already close to 3.5 kg, which for long hikes already becomes a noticeable disadvantage. But then you get more powerful and modernized weapons.
How powerful should a crossbow be for wild boar hunting? For a striking shot, it is enough to have a weapon with a tension force of at least 80 kg. We advise you to pay attention to models with a fuse and protection against a blank shot - in other words, fired without an arrow. The latter can cause major damage to the crossbow's arms.
Crossbow for moose hunting – how to choose?
Elk and deer are large animals with thick hides, so the crossbow must be quite powerful. For this type of hunting, you can use both recurve and compound crossbows. The former are light enough for long treks on foot when tracking elk, while the latter are more powerful and comfortable.
Still, the best choice would be a rifle-type compound crossbow with reinforced shoulders.
Arrows must be designed for large game, that is, made of durable material (carbon fiber or fiberglass) with drop-down tips. Such tips are capable of causing a fatal wound with the first shot, and if the animal begins to move, they will further increase bleeding and internal damage.
Thus, a crossbow can be safely used for hunting elk and deer. It has a lot of advantages over guns and bows, but it is important to choose the right model based on its parameters and characteristics.
About the sight
A crossbow for hunting wild boar and other large animals is already equipped with a fairly good standard sight. If you decide to replace it with another one, then remember that you should not install the device with a high magnification - the shooting will be carried out at a relatively short distance. Suitable options for a crossbow are between 4x24 and 4x32. If you have the financial opportunity, look at the night sight - seasoned wild boars are active at this time of day. It is worth paying attention to collimator types, which allow for more accurate shooting.
Before hunting a wild boar with a crossbow, you should definitely get used to the scope - start training by placing the target at a distance of about 10 meters, gradually increasing it over time.
Arrows and tips
Talking about the secrets and features of hunting wild boar with a crossbow, we want to immediately warn you - do not skimp on consumables! Poor quality arrows and tips can cause both a miss and an inaccurate shot that wounds rather than kills the animal. Another piece of advice is to purchase several types of bolts and tips, test them in different weather conditions (including strong winds) and select the best ones specifically for you.
Let's look at the tested products:
- For hunting large prey, special double-edged tips made by New Archery or Carbon Express are best suited - they provide the ability to pierce right through the carcass.
- If you are going to hunt a gilt, young of the year or a small animal, then an excellent option would be arrows equipped with blades that open when in contact with an obstacle.
- The most suitable material for arrows is, of course, carbon fiber, which is reliable and durable. Such well-known American companies as Carbon Express and Easton use it in the manufacture of their products.
- Don’t forget to equip your arrows with a tracer shank - it will sometimes help you avoid losing a valuable arrow.
And now that everything is ready, we will introduce you to the features of crossbow hunting for wild boar.
arbalet-airgun
When choosing a crossbow for hunting large game, it is advisable to consider full-size block and recurve models with a rated speed of 100 meters per second. Why?
The fact is that the speed is declared by the manufacturer for the so-called “correct” (original) arms, the tension force of which can be more than twice the legal GOST standards for Russia (43 kgf/95 lbs). For advertising and marketing purposes, it is given, as a rule, for the lightest arrows (approx. 350 grains/23 grams assembled), so when using more solid projectiles with blade tips in real hunting, a reserve of “power” certainly will not hurt (see. "Arrows for crossbow"). For the sake of objectivity, for some models I will give speed indicators with different arrows. Just keep in mind that, with rare exceptions, you will have to purchase additional reinforced shoulders. Until they are connected to the crossbow guide, they are not considered a weapon.
Animals, of course, are also different, but in an enclosure or in a country where hunting with arrow throwers is allowed (see “Hunting with a bow and crossbow - is it possible or not?”) , its object will be a variety of ungulates. These are primarily wild boar and deer (see “Hunting a wild boar with a crossbow” and “Hunting a deer with a crossbow by stealth”). And here you can’t get by with compact “block guns” like the MK-250 and “Caiman” (see “With a crossbow for black grouse”). Moreover, it is impossible to seriously consider compact “recursives” - MK-200, “Scorpion”, “Jaguar”, etc.
Although, to be honest, in hunting itself, outstanding speed indicators are not so important; hunting skills and abilities are much more significant. Therefore, all of the above applies more to beginners; experienced shooters even took lions from old “Excaliburs” (and still take large animals), and the “Jaguar” is sometimes enough for a white-tailed deer. Read more about all this in the chapter “Hunting crossbows: is the arms race suspended?” our article “New hunting crossbows: unity and struggle of opposites.”
By the way, don’t be surprised, but many of the models discussed below are still in service with the armies and intelligence services of a considerable number of countries! Read more in the article “Combat crossbows”.
Just a few words about sighting devices. Most full-size compound and recurve crossbows are equipped with optical/red dot sights in the base. They have their own specifics, about which you can read more in the articles “Crossbow sight” and “Parallax: who is to blame and what to do?”. They will also help you when choosing a suitable OP for hunting.
2020 addition. Attention: On August 2, 2020, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed Law No. 280-FZ “On Amendments to the Federal Law “On Weapons” and Article 1 of the Federal Law “On Hunting and on the Conservation of Hunting Resources and on Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of the Russian Federation” " Yes, the same one that formally allows hunting with throwing weapons!
Choosing a crossbow type
The weight of the weapon in this case does not play a special role, since for the crossbowman most types of running hunting are eliminated. Especially for beginners, since working from the approach is much more difficult. Almost the only available option is from an ambush, “from ambush”, from a tower... In general, no matter what it is called, the principle is the same: you will have to wait for the beast, sometimes for more than one hour, with a cocked and loaded crossbow.
And here block models have an undeniable advantage - the almost complete absence of “shoulder fatigue”. This is due to a number of factors, but the main ones are:
- Features of force distribution
For recurve models, the peak of the tension force occurs at the beginning of the working stroke of the bowstring, when the crossbow is cocked.
For block ones, the opposite is true: at the beginning of the working stroke, a significant (up to 80%) reduction in force occurs, its peak is shifted to the end when the arrow passes the last centimeters of the guide.
(This topic is discussed in some detail in the article “Powerful crossbow - what kind of animal is this?”)
- Features of shoulder kinematics
Even with the same working stroke of the bowstring, the shoulders of the “block” during cocking will bend at a much smaller angle than those of the “recursive”. Compare what it looks like for recursive...
... and compound crossbows.
The use of modern composites somewhat neutralizes the influence of this factor on expensive crossbows, but does not completely eliminate it.
In addition, to achieve the required speeds, block arrows require much less tension force than their recurve counterparts, and accordingly, cocking them is much easier. By the way, there are completely unique pneumatic hunting devices that do not require any effort at all to cock, and their speed characteristics are superior to the vast majority of serial crossbows. You can find out more in the above-mentioned article about the “powerful” crossbow, as well as in the review “Pioneer Airbow Arrow Launcher”. And just the other day, a completely amazing model appeared - a crossbow-shotgun. Progress clearly does not stand still.
Choosing a hunting crossbow model
Now directly about the models of crossbows for hunting. If there are available funds, there is no alternative to overseas brands.
Business class hunting recurve crossbows
In the recursive segment, the Canadian “Excalibur” has been a unique trendsetter for decades.
Today, the top of the pedestal is occupied by the ultra-fast Matrix 405 Mega Mossy Oak by “recursive” standards (124 m/s).
Both in terms of speed and price, it is at the level of expensive American “blockers”. But there are others, albeit not so fast, but very impressive in terms of the characteristics of the model. With a more reasonable price. Like the Excalibur Matrix 380 XTRA and its little brother Matrix 355 XTRA (pictured).
However, they are also crossing the 100,000th mark.
The Equinox models, which have proven themselves in hunting, are much cheaper.
Crossbow model/ tension, lbs | Initial speed fps / m.s., with arrow weight (average value over 3 shots)
390 grains2 | 408 grains3 | 433 grains4 | 450 grains5 | 470 grains6 | 485 grains7 | 500 grains8 | 565 grains9 | 590 grains10
Excalibur "Equinox" | 225lbs | 327,5 / 99,8 | 323,5 / 98,6 | 316,0 / 96,3 | 312,0 / 95,1 | 309,7 / 94,4 | 304,8 / 92,9 | 303,3 / 92,4 | 290,0 / 88,4 | 286,1 / 87,2 |
Necessary explanations for crossbow-bow units of measurement:
1 Lbs (lb) = 0.45 kg
1 grain = 0.0648 grams
1 fps (feet per second) = 0.305 m/s
In terms of speed characteristics, the Equinox fully satisfies any requirements for hunting large game. And high quality is generally inherent in all the company’s products.
In 2020, the company released a unique model “Micro 355” (pictured below). In terms of weight and size characteristics, it is at the level of the half-toy Scorpio and MK-200, but produces 108 m/s speed with an energy output of 133 J. An excellent result!
Remember that Excalibur is perhaps the only manufacturer that supplies models sold in Russia with additional hunting arms. Sold separately from the crossbow, they are not weapons. Therefore, when purchasing, be sure to pay attention to the package contents - a conscientious seller will never demand additional payment for them.
Budget recurve hunting crossbow
What to do if you don’t have enough money even for an inexpensive Excalibur?
Fortunately, there are quite high-quality budget (up to 25,000 rubles) clones of models from this company. This is the Russian “Interloper Mongoose” (pictured below), also known as the Taiwanese “Poe Lang Desert Hawk”. Within the framework of various discount promotions, it can generally cost 12-13 thousand rubles.
And also Chinese, by the way, very worthy samples, produced under the TDR and Bowmaster brands - “Ranger” / “Lancelot” (pictured) and a number of others. The price in the basic configuration is about 15,000 rubles.
Crossbow model/ tension, lbs | Initial speed fps / m.s., with arrow weight (average value over 3 shots)
390 grains2 | 408 grains3 | 433 grains4 | 450 grains5 | 470 grains6 | 485 grains7 | 500 grains8 | 565 grains9 | 590 grains10
Mongoose/Ranger/Lancelot | 225lbs | 324,5 / 98,9 | 320,4 / 97,6 | 313,8 / 95,6 | 310,5 / 94,6 | 304,2 / 92,7 | 301,6 / 91,9 | 298,5 / 91,0 | 287,4 / 87,6 | 281,3 / 85,7 |
In the hunting version, they all have an original draw weight of 225 lbs and an arrow speed of just over 100 meters per second. That is, they fully correspond to their purpose. However, you will have to buy additional shoulders, although they are not as expensive as those from the “block manufacturers”. So, for “Mongoose” the planks themselves without a block will cost about 4000-4500 rubles, assembled - 6000-7000.

Business class block hunting crossbows
Among the manufacturers of block crossbows, the leaders are, again, the Americans. First of all, these are such and “Barnett”. Recently, archery, which is a division of the largest archery, has also entered the crossbow market.
High-quality Ten Point crossbows are unique market leaders, including in price. At the same time, the company is clearly not chasing record speed indicators, relying specifically on the quality and accuracy of the weapon. The level of performance can be assessed even from the picture - in the photo “Vapor Pkg ACU”. The price far exceeds the 100 thousand mark.
Crossbow model/ tension, lbs | Initial speed fps / m.s., with arrow weight (average value over 3 shots)
390 grains2 | 408 grains3 | 433 grains4 | 450 grains5 | 470 grains6 | 485 grains7 | 500 grains8 | 565 grains9 | 590 grains10
TenPoint "VAPOR" | 165lbs | 371,4 / 113,2 | 360,7 / 109,9 | 354,7 / 108,1 | 347,4 / 105,9 | 340,0 / 103,6 | 337,1 / 102,7 | 333,4 / 101,6 | 317,4 / 96,7 | 308,8 / 94,1 |
Let's give credit to other manufacturers, many of whose models are considerably cheaper. Since we are talking about blockers, almost all full-size crossbows, due to their speed characteristics, are excellent for game hunting.
Pictured is Barnett “GHOST 410”.
Crossbow model/ tension, lbs | Initial speed fps / m.s., with arrow weight (average value over 3 shots)
390 grains2 | 408 grains3 | 433 grains4 | 450 grains5 | 470 grains6 | 485 grains7 | 500 grains8 | 565 grains9 | 590 grains10
Barnett "Ghost 410" | 185lbs | 406,6 / 123,9 | 397,1 / 121,0 | 385,8 / 117,6 | 379,9 / 115,8 | 373,2 / 113,8 | 367,3 / 112,0 | 364,2 / 111,0 | 342,6 / 104,4 | 336,3 / 102,5 |
The numbers in the name reflect the speed of the arrow: 410 feet per second, or 125 m/s. The price is considerably less than the 100 thousand mark. The “Penetrator” model, delivering at 110 m/s, is even cheaper. The cost of additional shoulders is about 25-27 thousand rubles.
Barnett also has very original models, in particular the so-called. “reverse crossbow” - “Vengeance black”.
The price is slightly higher than that of the “Penetrator” - 60-70 thousand, the speed, however, is also 111 m/s, and this is with an extremely low tension force of 140 lbs. Thanks to the design, it also boasts compactness and surprisingly good weight distribution. Simply put, your arms will not get as tired as when holding a crossbow with a heavy shoulder pad shifted forward.
Stylish tactical crossbows from Mathews Mission also fall into the same price niche. In the photo "MXB-Sniper Lite".
“Lite” is “Lite” - the speed barely exceeds the 100-meter mark. But in principle it fits within our hunting framework. And this costs about 55 thousand rubles. It has, of course, more expensive and faster brothers - the MXB-360 and MXB-400 Tactical (pictured).
The latter sends an arrow at a speed of 122 m/s, but also costs under 120 thousand. There are also camouflage exterior design options, which are more in line with hunting preferences.
By the way, just the other day Mathews presented a new product - a much more compact and packed with unique technical highlights, the powerful Mission SUB-1 hunting crossbow.
Some time ago, the volume of online criticism of both Barnett and Mission products suddenly increased sharply. It almost came to the point of accusations of all sins against some dealers of both manufacturers. Gradually, the picture began to become clearer - it looked like we were dealing with a trade war. Therefore, it is difficult to find any objective assessments of the products of these companies on the Russian Internet. One thing is clear: abroad they quite successfully “hunt” both deer and wild boar. Maybe the problems only affected weakened crossbows adapted for the domestic market? Who knows…
In any case, the participants in those online battles unanimously did not question the quality of Ten Point products. Well, at least someone remained above suspicion, the only pity is that the cars of this company are, to put it mildly, a little expensive.
In addition to the brands mentioned, such well-known brands as “Winchester” and “Darton” are present in the Russian market in small quantities. And if the last two work in a relatively budget segment, then, for example, PSE Archery products stand out both in price and in design and characteristics.
The photo below shows the TAC Elite model.
Crossbow model/ tension, lbs | Initial speed fps / m.s., with arrow weight (average value over 3 shots)
390 grains2 | 408 grains3 | 433 grains4 | 450 grains5 | 470 grains6 | 485 grains7 | 500 grains8 | 565 grains9 | 590 grains10
PSE "TAC ELITE" | 150lbs | —— | —— | 388,9 / 118,4 | —— | 375,6 / 114,5 | —— | —— | —— | —— |
Notice the outstanding speed performance with a modest tension force. They are achieved mainly due to the gigantic - 45 cm - working stroke of the bowstring. And he shoots exclusively with heavy, rigid arrows. The cost of additional shoulders corresponds to the class of the model - under 40 thousand rubles. The crossbow itself will cost about 160 thousand rubles.
I would not recommend using the TAS Elite for running hunting - the design is too bulky. But it’s a pleasure to shoot from ambush, even at elephants, fortunately the power allows it. And just the other day, a much more compact competitor appeared - an absolutely unique, although somewhat similar in mechanics, crossbow “Ravin R9” (pictured below), which produces 390 fps with a 400-grain arrow with very high shot accuracy. In the spring of 2020, the company intends to present its super-powerful modification R15 with speed indicators of 425 fps (130 m/s) - an absolute record to date!
By the way, in the summer of 2020, the Ravins had a kind of analogue - the famous archery released a new model of the Stealth NXT crossbow:
Like PSE, Bowtech is one of the world's leading bow manufacturers. And also not so long ago I decided to plunge into crossbow construction. The result was a somewhat unique Desert Stryker that has not yet found widespread use. And this despite the fact that the design of the arms (pictured) ensures the highest stability of the shot, and the self-centering blocks align the bowstring strictly in the center of the guide.
Another legendary bow manufacturer followed the same path in 2020. For details, see the article "Bear Archery": sometimes they come back again." As a presentation, I present a photo of the top model of the Fisix FFL crossbow line.
Products from Darton are, of course, simpler, but the prices are appropriate. Like the Darton Rebel 135S model (pictured).
In general, PSE, Bowtech, Winchester and Darton crossbows are relatively rare across the country. Therefore, when purchasing, be sure to find out if there are any authorized dealers near your locations. Without leaving, for example, my city, you can actually service Ten Point, Barnett and Interloper products. Even the most popular budget Man Kung, if something happened, would have to be sent somewhere to a service center. However, I managed to maintain and even repair all my crossbows myself. And in general there were no serious breakdowns.
But when focusing on purely hunting use, that is, regular use of strong arms, the load on the blocks, as well as the bowstring and cables, increases sharply. Which will have to be changed much more often. In this case, even an accidental blank shot from the mechanic will not forgive you and will fail. And, frankly speaking, I would not go into the warranty “ TAC Elit” with a hammer and chisel on my own, preferring, out of sin, to shift all responsibility to the dealer’s specialists.
Budget compound hunting crossbow
Those who cannot afford any North American hunting “blocker” can only, as in the case of “recursives,” pay attention to the East. First of all, on two Taiwanese and “Man Kung” models priced from 15 to 25 thousand rubles. The latter mastered full-size “blockers” relatively recently, bringing to the market the “tactical” line of MK-360, MK-380 (pictured) and MK-400.

More recently, new powerful models have been added to them - “Phobos” and the super-fast “Styx”, also known as “PoeLang Guillotine X” (pictured below). For details, see the article “New Crossbows: Poe Lang Strikes Back.” “Styx” in the basic configuration does not even reach 25 thousand rubles, in the full configuration it is 10 thousand more expensive. Interloper has one advantage over the vast majority of other manufacturers/sellers - a 5-year warranty on all its models.
Of course, both of them and “Poe Lang”/”Interloper” didn’t stop there. Read about the continuation of their competitive struggle in the article “New crossbows: “Wolf” versus “Reaper”. In the photo below is just the new “Man Kung” crossbow, the newest crossbow MK-XB56 “Frost Wolf”:
In the same price segment, block models from companies from China have recently begun to appear. Everything is the same as in the case of the Chinese Excalibur clones. In my opinion, it is still too early to talk about the experience of their practical use in hunting, but the quality, judging by the reviews that have appeared, is quite good, and most importantly, the price is attractive. As, for example, with the Hori-Zone products - Kornet and Penetrator.
The production of the “Thunder RTH” shown in the next photo was mastered by a manufacturer that has proven itself to be a high-quality recurve crossbow “Lancelot”.
We can expect that this model will be quite successful.
All these crossbows are in the MK-380 price niche; in terms of speed characteristics, they also correspond to most full-size ManKung and Poe Langa crossbows. It has not yet been possible to find out the cost of additional shoulders, but I am sure that it is no different from Taiwanese ones.
In short, the range of hunting crossbows can satisfy every taste and budget. The article “Hunting a wild boar with a crossbow” is devoted to the selection of arrows and tips, tactics and nuances of animal hunting itself and shooting itself.
2020 addition: read about new products on the crossbow market in the following articles:
- New hunting crossbows: unity and struggle of opposites
- Wonderful are your deeds, crossbow-bow world!
And yet - just don’t be surprised! - to accomplish many goals and tasks, it is quite possible to do without bulky crossbows; a slingshot will be enough. Only not quite an ordinary one, but a hunting SlingBow. Details in the article “Hunting and sporting bow-slingshot“.
Who shouldn't you shoot at?
Let's start the conversation with those whom you should never choose as your prey:
- Female with piglets. As an exception, it is allowed to shoot defective cubs, as well as crosses with domestic pigs. All this is discussed directly with the huntsman. But still, the hunter will always ignore such a family.
- An adult seasoned boar. Cleaver, a boar with already formed “cutting” fangs. The animal can safely be called an analogue of a rhinoceros - with its weight of a quarter of a ton. Remember that by the beginning of the hunting season, the boar will already have acquired a “kalkan” - a kind of “armor” made of connective tissue, complemented by a strong wool mat grown over the winter. This “shield” is located precisely in the killing zone - the neck and chest. Sometimes even a bullet won’t be able to penetrate it the first time, and when wounded the animal will become furiously furious. But hunters bypass the cleaver not only because of fear of it. The young male is the main producer of offspring.
Who will we hunt?
By the way, they hunt elk, wild boar and deer with a crossbow. However, it is boars that are considered the most desirable prey. Here's who you can target:
- Old boars. They are no longer producers, and the purpose of their existence is one - to show their superiority by defeating younger rivals.
- Fingerling. The piglet is a little more or less one year old. It is considered the best option from a gastronomic point of view - soft, tasty meat, increased nutritional value. The animal is lean, healthy in appearance, long-legged, without a hump and with barely discernible sexual characteristics. Weight - 25-40 kg. This is no longer a suckling piglet, but a boar with lighter fur than adults. As a rule, they try to choose a male individual as prey.
- Gilt. Age - 1.5-2 years. The underyearling looks more serious - withers and stubble appear, and the weight reaches 60-70 kg. However, distinguishing a pig from a wild boar is still not so easy.
Types of wild boar hunting with a crossbow
When choosing a crossbow as a weapon, you have to settle only on static methods of hunting. You also need to refuse the help of four-legged friends - dogs. There is a high probability that the dog that takes off towards the prey may itself become a victim of the arrow. Therefore, the following remains - hunting with a crossbow for wild boar from a tower, blind, storage shed, tristand (mobile storage shed).
Before the action itself, it would be a good idea to practice and test your strength - choosing not flat, but three-dimensional targets. And it’s best if their outline somehow resembles a wild boar. The last training should be done with such a target on the tower. Before hunting in a specific place, your crossbow should already be sighted from different angles at all multiples of 10 distances - up to 50-60 meters.
You will be ready for hunting when the accuracy of your hits from a tower or storage shed into the killing zone of the target from different distances is at least 90% of the total number. It’s not bad if a huntsman or a friend watches your training - flaws and mistakes are more visible from the outside.

Modern models of crossbows with their characteristics are designed for hunting roe deer, wild boar, elk and even, if you have the courage, bear. Of course, it’s stupid to compare even the most modern crossbow with a firearm, but the process of hunting with a crossbow will bring a lot of emotions and will be remembered for a long time. Experienced hunters are well aware that when choosing a crossbow for hunting, it is necessary to take into account a number of factors, ranging from the method of hunting (walking or sitting), the physical characteristics of the hunter himself and, of course, the budget. The price of an entry-level crossbow for hunting starts from 10,000 rubles, and crossbows from top manufacturers reach up to 3,000,000 rubles.
Choosing and purchasing a crossbow.
Before you buy a crossbow for hunting, do not forget about the three main features of this weapon. The first is the size, in comparison with a conventional gun, associated with the crossbow's shoulder span. Many crossbow manufacturers are trying to change this drawback, trying to make the design of the shoulders on the crossbow more compact, introducing new technologies and materials. The size from axle to axle on the shoulders of a crossbow can be from 40 cm, which means that it is very difficult to remain invisible with it. The tension force of some crossbows is 70-80 kg, so before hunting with a crossbow, “torture” a hand expander to develop your hands well. You don’t have to bother and buy a tensioner for a powerful crossbow. The second feature of crossbows is their single-shot nature. It will take at least ten seconds to reload the crossbow after firing, and you need to remember this.
The third feature is the speed and trajectory of the arrow. The flight speed of an arrow from a powerful crossbow reaches 120 m/sec, making it extremely difficult to hit a fast-moving target. It is worth noting here that the penetration ability of powerful crossbows will surprise even the most notorious skeptics. As for the flight trajectory, it depends on a number of circumstances - the tension force of the crossbow arms, the model of the tip for hunting, the type of arrow, the direction and strength of the wind.
What should a crossbow be like for hunting?
There are two design types of crossbows: recurve (with curved shoulders) and block. The latter has a system of eccentric blocks that accelerate the acceleration of the arrow, and also makes it easier to load the crossbow and makes the descent smoother by reducing the load on the trigger mechanism. The peak force on compound crossbows after cocking remains 20% of the original. Recurve crossbow models have some advantages over block crossbows, for example, ease of operation, reliability and light weight, but they are inferior in size. The shoulder span of recurve crossbows is much larger than compound crossbows. Recurve and compound crossbows are suitable for hunting. The only type of hunting for which crossbows are not suitable is shooting at flying birds. It's almost impossible to get in.
To make the right choice of crossbow for hunting, you need to compare two types of crossbows, holding them in your hands and talking with a consultant in the store. Everything about hunting should be fun, even the appearance and design of the crossbow, which is sometimes a key factor when choosing a model or type of crossbow. North America is the world leader in the production of crossbows for hunting. The main factor is that in the United States and Canada, hunting with a crossbow and bow is permitted on the same basis as firearms, and in some states the hunting season with a crossbow and bow is longer than with traditional weapons.
The Canadian company Excalibur is recognized as one of the leaders in the production of recurve crossbows for hunting sold in Russia. Excalibur is a simplicity and reliability of design, high precision, modern technology, tradition and dedication to what you love. Our opinion is based on the fact that in the entire history of sales of Excalibur crossbows in our Mark Point store since 2004. There was not a single warranty case. Next in our rating of recurve crossbows are crossbows from the Interloper company. The quality of crossbows manufactured by Interloper allows us to confidently give a five-year guarantee on our products. It is followed by products from Man Kung and other manufacturers.
The choice of block crossbows sold in Russia is wider than recurve ones, both by model and by manufacturer. First place in the ranking of manufacturers of block crossbows for hunting, without options, belongs to the American company TenPoint Crossbow Technologies. You can hear different opinions about TenPoint crossbows, and if we summarize them, then TenPoint is No. 1 in quality, accuracy and innovative solutions in the modern production of crossbows for hunting, not only in America, but also in the world. If the opinion is negative, then this opinion comes from people who are not competent, who have never picked up a Tenpoint crossbow or who do not have the opportunity to buy one. When you hold Ten Point crossbows in your hands and come to our store, you will understand that this is so. TenPoint crossbows are the quality of piece production, not mass stamping. If you are ready to agree with the price of a Ten Point crossbow, then buy it with confidence, it’s worth it.

Next in the ranking is PSE Archery (USA). The American company has become famous thanks to the active introduction of engineering developments in the field of creating bows and crossbows for hunting, sports and recreation since 1970. Today, PSE has more than two dozen patents for its inventions and an impeccable reputation in the archery industry. PSE crossbows are chosen for hunting and sports by both novice shooters and professionals.
Tactical crossbow from
It is worth paying attention to crossbows from Mathews (USA) . Mathews Archery, one of the world's premier bow companies, has taken the crossbow market by storm with exciting new products, the MISSION MXB 360 and MXB 400 crossbows. The Mathews MXB 360 TACTICAL Compound Crossbow is lightweight and compact, perfectly balanced and incredibly versatile. Created according to the “bullpup” design, the MXB 360 crossbow is equipped with a block system that allows an arrow to fly at 110 m/s and this with the heaviest arrow weight of 400 grains! After the release of the MISSION MXB-360 crossbow, it seemed that a better crossbow could not be created. However, it lacked the 400fps speed barrier. MATHEWS engineers took a thorough approach to the development of the MISSION MXB-400 crossbow, which showed not only high speed, but also reliability, with a margin covering the loads arising from such high-speed shots. The MISSION MXB-400 compound crossbow is lightweight - only 3 kg and compact - length 90 cm, width 50 cm.
Crossbow of the Mathews Archery company "MISSION МХВ-360"
In our country, unfortunately, the products of the DARTON ARCHERY (USA) company are not popular, and this is unfair. DARTON ARCHERY is known for its innovative patents, which are used by many manufacturers in the archery industry.
Crossbow
Interloper hunting crossbows are perfect for mid-priced buyers. Interloper crossbows for hunting and sports belong to the latest generation of ultra-fast crossbow models. Interloper crossbows combine quality, accuracy, speed, a wide range of models and appearance. The advantage of Interloper crossbows will be appreciated by hunters with a crossbow, fans of sports shooting and those who received an Interloper crossbow as a gift.
You should pay attention to the crossbows of the Man Kung company. Thanks to the outstanding performance of its products, Man Kung has built a reputation as a reliable manufacturer of crossbows for hunting, while maintaining competitive prices and expanding its range. Since its founding, the company has been conducting systematic research in the development and creation of unique modern models of throwing weapons. Man Kung crossbows can be found among hunters in Russia, the USA and Europe. By purchasing a crossbow from Man Kung, you get a high-quality modern crossbow for reasonable money. Our rating listed the main manufacturers of crossbows sold in our country.
When choosing a crossbow, pay attention.
When choosing a hunting crossbow, pay attention to the power of the weapon, but you should not always get carried away with overly powerful models. For hunting small game up to 50kg. shoulders with a tension force of up to 43 kg are suitable. For a large animal, you need a crossbow with a string tension of at least 70 kg. For those who hunt large wild boar, the deciding factor when choosing a crossbow should be the speed of the arrow, not the power of the crossbow. The flight speed of an arrow for hunting medium and large animals must be at least 90 m/sec. You should also pay attention to the sights, although a crossbow for hunting does not need powerful optics exceeding 4x24 or 4x32. Some people find it more convenient to use a red dot sight, especially when shooting at a moving target. The sighting bar allows you to install a night vision sight or thermal imager, as well as any other attachments, on the crossbow.
Choosing arrows for crossbow hunting.
And, of course, arrows. crossbow hunting for medium and large animals, branded professional arrows made of aluminum or carbon from Easton or Carbon Express are ideal. These arrows have one drawback, and that is the price. If you are not a professional sports shooter and 1 cm up, down or to the side is not so important for you, feel free to buy arrows from other manufacturers, but only on the condition that the arrows must be made of carbon. For hare and bird hunting, as well as for fun, cheaper aluminum arrows are quite suitable.
There are special arrows for hunting fish - their tip is made in the form of a spear. If you wish, you can save a lot on purchasing arrows. There are universal arrows on sale that can be used for both hunting and training. They have a thread on the shaft, which allows you to quickly replace the sporting tip with a hunting one. The quality of stabilization of the arrow in flight, and, consequently, the accuracy of shooting depends on the plumage. Hunting arrows have a long fletch, which speeds up the stabilization of the arrow, which is especially important when shooting at short distances. To hunt a hare or bird, an arrow weighing about 27 grams will be enough. To hit a boar or other large prey you will need heavier arrows. The main condition for choosing the length of an arrow for hunting: the tip of the arrow must protrude beyond the crossbow guide.
Choosing a tip for hunting with a crossbow.
The choice of tips for hunting should be approached carefully and thoroughly. Saving on a hunting tip is more expensive for yourself; you risk wasting time, money, nerves and missing out on a treasured trophy. Tips for hunting are: forged, collapsible and opening, three-blade, two-blade, etc. In our Mark Point store, you can buy tips for crossbow hunting; we have a wide selection, reasonable price, and individual approach.
The optimal distance for hunting with a crossbow.
It is considered optimal for a crossbow to shoot at a target located at a distance of up to 50-60 meters. The shape of the tip for hunting is such that when it hits, the tip penetrates deeply into the body of the animal, affects the internal organs and simply paralyzes its motor activity. There are practically no wounded animals that escape the hunter. You need to aim at the stomach, neck or chest of the animal, this is especially true for large and powerful game such as wild boar or elk.
Safety precautions when shooting from a crossbow.
In order not to damage your fingers when lowering the bowstring, they should not be located in the line of its movement. When firing a shot, the crossbow's shoulders should not touch tree branches or other objects. Before going hunting, you must inspect the weapon to ensure there are no critical damages. Particular attention must be paid to the condition of the bowstring - significant abrasions and tears can lead to its rupture during loading and firing. It is also worth remembering that a blank shot can lead to damage to the crossbow.
Hunting with a crossbow and bow is prohibited by law in Russia.
One of the reasons is the low culture of handling weapons among Russian hunters. You can only hunt in closed enclosures or illegally (we are sure that the situation will change soon).
Advantages of hunting with a crossbow:
1. Modern crossbow hunting is a unique process full of adrenaline, which is not comparable to other types of hunting. The chances of the hunter and the beast are balanced and this is a real drive for a true hunter and extreme sports enthusiast. 2. A crossbow of the 21st century is simplicity and reliability, modern and only high-quality materials, modern technological production, unique engineering developments, impeccable work in any weather and in any extreme conditions. 3. The arrow's flight speed reaches 130 m/sec, which does not give the victim a chance to escape the shot. 4. Crazy penetrating ability of a modern hunting crossbow. Taking down a trophy boar or elk with a powerful crossbow is not a problem. 5. Silence when firing allows the hunter not to scare away all the game nearby and not attract unnecessary attention.
Disadvantages of hunting with a crossbow.
1. One of the main disadvantages of a crossbow is the inability to conduct targeted shooting at fast-flying targets. 2. The crossbow has become a favorite weapon among poachers during illegal hunting because of its noiselessness.
Features of hunting.
There is no big difference in the principles of hunting with a crossbow and a gun. A hunter with a crossbow needs to shoot at vital places of the animal, as in a standard hunt with a firearm. When shooting an arrow with a hunting tip from a crossbow, the blood loss is significantly higher than from a gun and the animal has no chance. It should be remembered that the hunter theoretically has a second chance to shoot due to the silent nature of the crossbow. It is very important to always monitor the condition of the bowstring on your crossbow so that it is not damaged. It is important to follow safety precautions while hunting. One of the main requirements is to watch your fingers. If you get caught on the bowstring during a shot, your fingers can be damaged. When firing, you should watch the shoulders of the crossbow so that they do not come into contact with the branches during the shot.
Boar hunting.
Hunting a wild boar with a crossbow is a risky undertaking, but it is full of unique emotions and is completely effective. The wild boar is a serious trophy and even with a gun an experienced hunter should hunt it carefully. A hunter should take the choice of crossbow arrows and tips for hunting very seriously. A long carbon or aluminum crossbow arrow (up to 50 centimeters arrow) with a weight of about 40 grams is best suited, and most importantly, this choice of a good tip for hunting.
You can hunt a wild boar in any way, but you should remember that approach hunting with a crossbow is the most dangerous option. According to experienced hunters, the most popular crossbow when hunting wild boar or elk is one that has a draw force of 70 kg. In this case, shooting at an animal from a crossbow should be done from a distance of up to 50 -60 meters.
Hunting elk with a crossbow.
It won't be difficult to take a trophy elk from a modern, powerful crossbow; it has plenty of speed and killing power. Hunting elk with a crossbow will be a memorable experience for the hunter. The main thing when hunting horned animals with throwing weapons is patience and endurance. There must be one shot, but accurate.
Duck hunting with a crossbow.
To hunt ducks, you should not purchase a high-budget crossbow from prestigious brands; you can use the simplest crossbows in the inexpensive segment. Here it is worth noting the simple crossbows from the company Man Kung and Interloper.
Hunting a hare with a crossbow.
Hunting for long-eared fish is a very difficult task. The hare is cautious and timid; it is very difficult and difficult to approach it within shooting distance. It is very difficult to shoot right away, here the main role is played by luck and the luck of the hunter rather than accuracy, but whoever does not take risks, will... Using a powerful crossbow of the latest generation, you can also hunt roe deer, beaver, and if you have the courage, even bear

The hunt begins with your permanent placement in a storage shed near feeding areas - first of all, load the crossbow and put everything you need at hand. And then just wait. It goes without saying that you cannot make noise, eat, drink or smoke. The best time to start is evening. Be prepared that you will have to sit until the morning.
Usually families with small piglets are the first to apply. Then - cleavers, dispersing the whole pack at once. You must discuss with the huntsman in advance who to shoot. Take aim at your prey and track its every move. The shot should catch the boar in the most convenient position for you - a certain distance, with the animal positioned in profile towards you.
Based on reviews of wild boar hunting with a Cheetah crossbow, one can judge that the most successful area is the rather large lungs, a paired organ penetrated by a dense network of blood vessels. To hit the heart or liver with a arrow thrower, you need to have a truly innate talent. Head, neck, spine - this is not your option. Apart from tormenting the animal, it will bring nothing.
Do not rush to run to the prey after being shot - even a fatally shot boar can rush far into the forests on adrenaline. Wait until the animal lies on its side and becomes quiet.
Andrey Shalygin: Of course, I’m not going to write a monograph here about deer hunting, just as I’m not going to drag together all the advice that I read in other materials, although this is exactly what many hunting-type journalists do, mainly illustrating other people’s materials and reinterpreting the classics.

Ka Cey – Miss Huntress USA 2011 – Hunting Bow BEAR ARCHERY SIRENE – 2013
But you and I must quite sensibly realize that an ordinary hunter does not conduct real deer hunting in Russia for several reasons. Deer in Russia, where there are hunters, is practically absent and costs crazy, frankly unhealthy money. Where there is deer in Russia, it is either northern, hunting for which is absolutely specific and of little interest, or, where it exists, hunting it is prohibited, or there are no hunters or outfit services in that region at all. The same Americans monitor not only the number of deer, but also the quality of the harvested trophies. If in 1988 more than 60% of the deer shot were one year old, then in 2010, with a continuous downward trend, this figure became less than 38% . That is, an adult, trophy deer is hunted, the hunters allow the young to grow up and give birth to offspring... Who is keeping an eye on what? The so-called Tsentrokhotkontrol, which falsifies population data and has not posted any data on its official website for more than five years? Do you want to calculate the percentage of juveniles caught? In general, can you even count what has been harvested, if you have regional environmental bureaucrats facing criminal charges for poaching, presidential envoys with helicopters shooting down Red Bookers, and employees of specialized institutions falsifying counting data, while regional game wardens are photocopying licenses using a color copier...? The question is rhetorical - thieves and lawbreakers, that’s why there is no hunting.
In general, the question of where is better is absolutely not worth it, because everywhere in developed countries it is better, and not just better, but as much as we never dreamed of. And it’s not even a question that the wealth of our country, to which everyone is accustomed to having it, has long been successfully lost, and stolen, but simply stolen, and no one is not only not going to restore anything, but also cannot. In Russia there is not a single decent state farmer at all except in the cattle farm mode, and natural reproduction is grotesque and obscene. As for examples to the contrary, there is no need to go further than this November snapshot.
All over the world the trends are the same - Women in Defense of Hunting. More and more women are becoming hunters all over the world, but in Russia the trends are the opposite - either a total reduction in the wild boar population under fictitious stories about ASF to reduce the food supply of the local population, or a ban on hunting in dens so that the predator will eat up the already scarce resource of ungulates in addition to because they didn’t shoot... Our bureaucrats have different aspirations than the American ones, there the population of red deer alone is 11,000,000 heads, but in our country there is no one to count it, and there is nothing to do.
Compound Bow Hunting for Deer
If we add to this the fact that hunting deer with a bow and crossbow in Russia is only possible in open-air cages or for mythical pseudoscientific and other pseudo-needs , then, strictly speaking, formally there is no one to give me advice. Except, however, about 20,000 poachers with bows and crossbows. Therefore, in Russia, in fact, people with wealth receive deer on a silver platter, as if at a shooting range, and they don’t need my advice at all, since all they need to do is pull the trigger, while everyone else prefers to read in silence and you won’t get reports from them later - they don’t have any publicity for what.
November 2013 whitetail hunt from Rich Baugh's Tristand
However, we still have that official contingent that travels with pleasure to America, France, New Zealand, Europe, and even Belarus and Bulgaria... - all sane people have such a desire and it is magnificent. But Europe and Zealand will not require any skills from you, everything there is strict and on schedule, but in America and Belarus and Bulgaria, advice can come in handy. Of course, going to America to hunt is somewhat expensive, and also a bit of a chore - visas, distances, time, money, somewhat neutralize the result. But Belarus and Bulgaria are quite a good prospect, unless, of course, you are an ordinary ordinary poacher , of which there are much more than half of the domestic poachers. Despite possible protests from official bureaucrats, I would even say that more than 90% of Russian hunters have definitely committed poaching actions in their lives, if not all 100%, including all bureaucrats as well. Based on such a diverse contingent of interested parties, it is difficult to write some kind of scientific and unnecessary theoretical monograph, gleaned from primers - it is of no interest to anyone at all. But it is quite possible to give some tips that may be useful not only when hunting deer.
2013 Hunting Bow BEAR ARCHERY MOTIVE-6
Understand the hunted animal based on its own habitat
White-tailed deer, black-tailed deer, spotted deer, wapiti deer, or even roe deer and elk - it doesn’t matter if you are able to imagine yourself in the animal’s place based on its mentality and knowledge of the biocenosis. Somewhere an animal simply lives, and somewhere it just survives. In one case, they will be driven by hunger and hormonal needs, in another by fear and caution, and in the third by the habit of being around people. Therefore, in one case, deer and roe deer will not be scared off by a rumbling tractor or a roaring car, but the barely audible crack of a branch under your boot will blow you away for a kilometer. Otherwise, you can either forget about cigarettes and a thermos of coffee, or take it as an alternative to the whole hunt. In the third case, you can put on decorative horns with a hood and rush through the forest like an elephant - it will only be more effective. There is simply no universal advice without knowledge of the place, time and conditions. Hunting for ungulates with a bow is significantly different from hunting a hare with a bow , from hunting a fox with a bow and decoy , from hunting a pheasant with a bow , even if it is hunting a pheasant with a bow with a self-top, with a decoy from the approach ... with ungulates everything is somewhat more complicated , and here you need additional equipment.
The camera is a little expensive, but you can trust me that it's worth it. If you want to understand what is happening in the forest, install photo recorders, and preferably several. If you want good hunting for ungulates with a bow and a crossbow, forget about stationary towers and ambushes, they are not made for you, take self -climbing tristands with built-in belay and place them where the animal walks, and not a crowd of drunken huntsmen with clients. Never neglect decoys - only a complete fool would deny their role. If the season allows for complementary feeding, bait, bait, pheromones and attractants - be sure to use them - the animal will be there even if it wasn’t there. Natural derivatives are always better than artificial ones, so do not throw away glands and secretions from previous hunts, freeze them. Remember that modern animals near human habitation feed on the products of human activity , therefore there are always more animals around any village than far from the settlement - fields, plots, crops, stacks, winter crops, oats, corn, root crops, abandoned crops, landfills - trash cans, abandoned settlements, gardens, cattle farms - all this is visited by animals more often than the thicket itself. Well, the main rule is that you need to hunt where the animal is, and where the conditions for hunting it are not created. Logical. Therefore, it is not enough to know that there are sources of food for specific animals in the area - you need to know that there are animals there. However, you always need to understand where there are cereals, what grasses grow, where there are young clearings, where there is dense undergrowth, where there are acorns in an oak grove, where and what kind of agricultural plantings, where there are old vegetable gardens and fields of sunflowers and root crops, cereals and hayfields, clover, alfalfa, chicory, beets, rapeseed, cabbage, etc.

Know the area and don't wander around hoping for something stupid.
There is a series of cartoons by Alexey Alekseev about a hunter with a dog and a forest trio “Forest minimal techno” called in the Russian adaptation, and in the original KJFG No. 5. So this is where the classic Russian hunter with the classic Russian hunting dog is shown - somnambulistic, fruitless wanderings through the forest with an infantile little dog, when behind every tree there is everything you want - this is exactly what was accurately noted about Russian hunting with a self-tope. They wander and wander over the heads of the beast - but to no avail.
Of course, in Russia there is a wild boar 5 kilometers from the Moscow Ring Road, as well as elk and deer, not to mention the fox, but it is best to find the animal in public lands, and not somewhere, and it is generally better to avoid private owners (hunting users) for many reasons... therefore, first of all, you need to find land delineation maps in the place where you are going to hunt, and choose a place away from logging sites, construction sites, waste sites, military units, precipitation routes of chemical plants, sawmills, slaughterhouses and livestock complexes. For the eastern part of Russia, there are plenty of them on the portals for free, and they don’t change constantly, but for the restless western part, sawn 100 times, you can buy them from Tina Anatolyevna Rukavishnikova at Rosohotrybolovdesign. Check with the public cadastral map of Russia - available on the Internet - to understand the real ownership and status of the land. Hunting in ODU is usually more difficult than hunting on lands seized for bribes, however, the result is much more profitable and the force majeure is much less. Don't ignore the wind and weather. The beast does not walk on weekends, waiting for your arrival . Plan your route taking into account the wind rose, so for the Moscow region and the Tver region you need to enter the massif, as a rule, from the southeast, and exit in the northwest. Do not break into the thicket - first go around the perimeter of settlements and farmland, where the animals are most numerous. Use photo recorders more often, which you camouflage well (from people, of course, first of all).

The beast is not a fool, and just like you, he doesn’t want to wander through the forest in the wind, rain and inconvenience. He is not crazy enough to force his way through the thicket in the presence of crowded roads , so he will not ignore the road or path either, if it is sufficiently deserted. And that is where he will leave the most traces. If there is an abandoned human habitat, the probability of finding an animal there is much higher , since there are more mice for predators, and shelters for small animals, for ungulates, there are seedings and rashes, clearings. If there is water, then the animal goes to water. If there are forest plantations , then ungulates will also go to check them in accordance with their taste preferences - gnaw branches and buds, moose will check New Year's pine trees more than once and eat them up, they former clearings for young branches, poorly harvested hayfields , etc. Therefore, keeping your boots on the ground and measuring it with your feet is a good thing, but only if you know exactly where and why you are going, while thinking about the object of the hunt. With all this, a self-propelled gun gives much more results than studying the food supply and tracking . Unless, of course, it was planned out of thin air. A very reasonable option would be to choose a semi-abandoned village, where you can easily get there by car and stay in one of the empty houses for several days - for Russia today this is a very simple task. Therefore, a hunting base is completely optional. If you stay with ordinary villagers for a nominal fee, you can also gain useful information.
The most useful information is hidden, whether for an American hunter or for a Russian one (mostly a poacher), in how big the largest stag in the herd is. Some hunt for horns, others for large size, but, one way or another, everyone goes... for meat. Therefore, we initially need to understand what we are hunting for, and it is advisable to make sure of this before we start tracking.
If you know a hang pilot or such a ride service not far from the hunting site, it is worth considering this option as an aerial reconnaissance over a forest area. Helps save time and money, although it is not cheap. Film everything with a camera, don’t be lazy and take coordinates, dictating out loud while recording. You will definitely find a fresh trail, and from there everything depends on you. If you hunt constantly and the cost of a hang pilot is high, then you should think about using drones, that is, a drone - a large and expensive one is difficult, but buying a large, low-speed but powerful gasoline glider in a special store and putting a compact camera on it is affordable for everyone - on You will be provided with reconnaissance for several kilometers. Take-off and landing, of course, raise questions, but gliders can take off directly from your hands, as well as land.

Whoever is first gets slippers, but you need to prepare the sleigh in the summer
The hut on the current needs to be set up before the winter, the oats for the wild boar must be sown in advance, some for winter, some for the season, some for the season, some for the black trail, some feeding for the snow and cold, some brooms from the summer, some to open the hunt at the beginning... Therefore, everything needs to be done in advance and prepared ahead of time, and done when the work begins . At the same time, if you are looking for a hunt on Friday, you shouldn’t go hunting at all, unless you drink vodka and eat a homemade cutlet. You need to hunt at the beginning of the season, before the hunters have scared away everything that can be scared away. In this situation, 3 days at the beginning of the season are worth three weeks in the middle. But this does not mean that you need to go in a crowd to one place and start a third world war there. Hunting does not tolerate noise, fuss and crowds. Drive hunting is not hunting, it is a shooting range and a market with a marketplace. This is for the market people, not for the Hunter. In fact, regular deer hunters on abandoned ranches in America specially sow crops for deer , and the entire field, believe it or not, is divided in this way with the help of tractors with earthen embankments and plantings, with cleared paths being made so that the hunter can move throughout the entire field silently and invisibly to any point - creating a kind of labyrinth for silent, fast mobile movement with minimal sound and smell. You can reach any place in such a field at a 40-meter distance from cover. And they know where the deer and wild boar are based on data from web cameras installed on towers. Very often, fertilizing fields are created on the site of abandoned fields by strip sowing with clover, alfalfa, chicory, corn, installing racks with mineral fertilizing, pennies with hay, automatic feeders with compound feed, licks. In principle, I have already described all this in sufficient detail for the same boar, incidentally having also told about other ungulates, so Feeding areas: Feeding and baiting of wild boar (Photo). So read and draw your own conclusions. Who will collect a wild boar for diesel fuel and scratching, and who will use his own eggs is a matter of personal choice, but hoping to just come and catch a deer or elk on the trail on the weekend is reckless. Of course, equipment also relates to advance preparation, so stuffed animals, camouflage, clothing and camouflage - all this is collected in relation to the season and place of hunting, and not in the oak for reeds, but in the reeds for powder.

No one has canceled camouflage, although it is clearly not worth dragging an expeditionary force with you
It’s strange, of course, to dress Leshy and walk through the forest in it, but sitting on a blind spot is a completely healthy idea for both a goose and an elk. Of course, your disguise is as good as a lamp to wild boar and wood grouse, but sweaty socks and the stink of cigarettes will give you away to a wild boar, just like to a wolf - it will pass you a kilometer or two away. Therefore, everything should be sensibly thought out - where an orange vest will protect you from a foolish colleague, and where it will disperse the beast. Some hunters say that ducks even see chipped paint on decoys, and the Robinsons claim that applying paint to the face increases the duck hunting rate by almost 25%. This is a very large number, but you can’t help but trust the Duck Commanders - each of them has 1200 ducks per season on their account. We have such fishermen only in Taimyr and in the north; there are no such amateurs. Modern equipment allows you to cover you in the middle of the landscape with a camouflage tent and simply open a camouflage umbrella and blend into the landscape in any way. Some people take cans of artificial snow to disguise not only the location, but also the visibility of their tracks until they cross the first snow... The whole question is a balance of necessity and sufficiency. The general principle is that ordinary animals do not expect a threat from above , so if you are sitting high in a tree, there is a high probability that scent camouflage is significant for you, but visual camouflage is not very much, although it would not hurt to throw a net.
Deer hunting with a compound bow Andrey Shalygin www.NExplorer.ru
On the other hand, be reasonable, the amount of equipment is not at all a sign of your preparedness or great intelligence - rather the opposite. The choice should be optimal and mobile. Make a list for yourself in advance . Equipment in a car is one thing, on an ATV is another, but the most important thing is what is loaded on you - think about it to the smallest detail and put it on for control and check it at home. A versatile backpack with mounts for a bow and arrow, water and equipment is the right choice. If it is possible to drive close to the hunting site, then a camouflage tent on a blind spot will not be superfluous, as well as an anti-odor spray - these things are clearly not superfluous, and a comfortable hunt is always more interesting and enjoyable. And don’t make an anti-hunting agent out of repellent for animals - take special odorless and effective repellents for hunters, for example Mosquidosis, etc., and not cologne and ladies’ perfume. I won’t strain you too much if I say that the choice of place due to the wind and view should be checked and double-checked several times - the wind should be on you from the animal even after sunset, and even more so near a reservoir, where it will change both in the morning and in the evening . Sitting on the tristand and in ambush - forget about gadgets, mobile phones, chatting and telling tales - sit silently for several hours, without drinking aromatic tea, and without thinking about the effectiveness of the repellent. Of course, rustling clothes are unacceptable here, so no nylons. Place the weapon on a specially designed stand - it should not be in your hands. You should have binoculars or a rangefinder or night vision device in your hands. Or a combined device.
Tracking a Beast is a Science that Requires Ability
You cannot teach stalking and tracking based on articles on the Internet. Previously, for this very purpose, before receiving a hunting license, you had to spend two years as an understudy attached to a hunter with at least 5 years of experience, and also work on hunting grounds for two weeks a year in order for your contributions to be accepted. Now any goat on the forum is a hunter. Ungulates are mainly gregarious, and some are seasonal, so you need to start monitoring the herd long before the hunt (at least a month), determine the composition, routes, hierarchy, choose your main target, count the young animals, separate the routes of the leader and all the others separately. Even the same deer stay in groups where there are 1-2 dominant males, 2-3 smaller males, and the rest are females and young animals. Therefore, you need to find a leader or challenger if you came for a trophy, or deputies if you came for meat. During the period of preparation for the hunting season, if it is autumn, the feeding behavior of the herd gradually changes - this is influenced by the number of mosquitoes and midges, the maturation and fall of food sources, as well as temperatures and rains. Only after studying these aspects and verifying the results with a photo recorder will you be able to find out the main and alternate trails where to place tristands. The time factor is critically important - if a deer feeds in the early morning, and at lunchtime rests on a bed, then after eating it rushes to spend the night in the support, then the easiest way to meet a wild boar is like a duck, and the evening bite is at dawn - the duck will fly to spend the night in the dark. gray, and the boar will only get up to go to the field in the dark and will carefully walk around for an hour and a half if he sniffs something that is not right, and only in complete darkness after civil twilight will he come out to feed. However, this is also not an axiom. The main thing for you is to find the paths along which the animal emerges from the support to feed and drink, and also to determine when it does this. To obtain reliable data, photo recorders are needed.
I'll skip the baiting section,
since this is a separate science, which is useless to talk about simply in passing. I can only say that with the proper skills, everything else said above may simply not be needed.
This is why wabu hunting is so popular not only among firearms hunters, but especially among bowhunters - you don’t run after the animal, but it comes to you. As for pheromones and other aerobatics, I advise you to simply turn to foreign specialized sites as the only source of such information , since in Russia not a single specialized institution works to popularize such information, if at all it has it, except since Soviet times. As for the tensal glands, for example, brief information is presented in the picture. Let's go back to the waba.
If for elk we have partly considered this issue: Hunting for elk on a wabu with a Professional. And some features of hunting for large ungulates , and more than once Elk on wabu : Hunting with decoys for moose - how to hunt wabu (other links inside the articles), as well as for the most widespread duck hunting Duck hunting with decoys and stuffed animals: What’s bad cheap decoy for hunting , How to learn to attract a goose and duck with a wind decoy: The art of using a decoy (VIDEO) , then we only considered hunting for wapiti and other deer around the bush Tested on ourselves: hunting for hunters , jacking competitions , etc. In the vaba There is a lot of information content in the deer, so it is not enough to know how to challenge, imitate high and low wheezes, high and low bleats of a doe, long and short calls of a bull... the whole concert of complex sequences can last a whole minute in one signal. Therefore, there is no need to talk about something that requires a separate narrative. Therefore, we will consider the second material on preliminary familiarization with deer hunting with a bow to be temporarily completed, but we already have something to refer to when we talk about deer hunting with a bow in Russia.

After the shot
The most successful option is when the arrow pierces right through the prey. It is convenient to trace this along the tracer shank - the light enters the side of the boar, fades out for seconds and lights up again a little to the side. You can also monitor a successful hit by the behavior of the boar: it fell to its knees, began to spin around in place, and fell on its side. Such a beast clearly will not go far.
Do not go down from the tower until the huntsman arrives. Briefly and clearly explain to him everything you saw and only then move to place X. Abundant blood stains, especially with air bubbles, parts of torn internal organs again indicate your luck - the animal will be easy to find even at night.
There are no blood stains, and the tracks of the animal go in a straight line - this indicates a miss. But the next thing is much worse - a broken arrow, some blood stains, straight running. Gamekeepers and dogs are already looking for the wounded animal in all areas, but the search often turns out to be in vain. Let's note that this is a pretty penny.
Hunting a wild boar with a crossbow is a pleasure that is inaccessible in Russia and expensive in other countries. And, as you have seen, it is quite specific and requires experience and thorough preparation.
