The flight of the bullet with such a shot lasted as much as 10 seconds (with Andrei Ryabinsky’s record shot from the Sumrak rifle, the bullet flew for 13 seconds). Even non-Olympic champions can run the 100-meter dash in this amount of time. However, a long range is needed just at a short range. Or relatively small. In a real war, snipers fire from special long-range rifles at a range of 1.5-2 km. The tactical situation simply does not require more. But if you take a similar NATO rifle, for example, the American CheyTac M200 “Intervention”, which is chambered for the same .408 CheyTac cartridge as the “Twilight”, then it seems to hit the same 2 km. But the long sighting range in any case means a higher initial speed (the Sarak has 900 m/s, and the American 800 m/s), and this gives greater accuracy at close ranges. About the SVLK-14S rifle

The body of the receiver of the SVLK-14S rifle is made using aircraft-grade aluminum with a threaded insert made of high-alloy corrosion-resistant steel. The shutter is also made of solid, corrosion-resistant steel. The developers of the rifle deliberately left their masterpiece in a single-shot version in order to provide the necessary rigidity of the receiver, which is so necessary for ultra-long-range shooting. The rifle, which will outshine all world analogues, is a development of one of the very first rifles that came out of the workshop of Vladislav Lobaev’s company - his SVL (Lobaev Sniper Rifle) model 2009 has been setting shooting records for six years at ranges up to and beyond two thousand meters. In the case of the SVLK-14S, specially assembled for the world record, the firing range will be simply incredible - 3400 meters or more. SVLK-14S had a rather difficult role - to become the best in the world in terms of accuracy and firing range. The crown of the king of ultra-long-range shooting must be lived up to, and this unique rifle, the likes of which, perhaps, in the whole world, will cope with this, according to the convictions of Vladislav Lobaev himself.

Ultra-long-range "Twilight"

On April 16, the website of the weapons company Lobaev Arms reported tests of a new modification of the long-range high-precision rifle SVLK-14S with an attempt to set a world record for firing range. The tests were carried out on April 9 in field conditions on the border of the Kaluga and Tula regions. The founder of the company, sniper Vyacheslav Lobaev, set himself the ambitious goal of surpassing the existing world record for precision shooting range (2475 m) - the targets were installed at a distance of 3400 m from the shooter (at this distance the target is almost invisible to the naked eye).

The shooting was carried out from a rifle with a shortened barrel (780 mm), the design of which had some changes made (in particular, the tire and firing pin of the weapon were made of titanium). In addition, special cartridges with the new D30 bullet developed by the company were created for ultra-long-range shooting. All this made it possible to achieve almost the same initial bullet speed as when fired from a weapon with a 900 mm long barrel. When shooting, we used the IOR Valdada 5.8-40x optical device, which experts describe as a high-quality sight.

After making numerous adjustments for range and weather conditions, five shots were fired. After each of them, specialists entered additional data into the sight settings, taking into account messages about the coordinates of the point of impact of each bullet relative to the target. At a distance the length of 32 football fields, the sniper needed the help of spotters positioned in safe shelters near the target and reporting the results of each shot. With the last shot, the shooter hit the target - the bullet entered the shield about a meter below the center of the target, which means setting a new record for sniper shooting range. Vyacheslav Lobaev told journalists present at the shooting that in the near future he intends to set another shooting range record - 3500 m.

SVLK-14S is a unique weapon that has no analogues in the world. The design of the rifle was developed personally by Vyacheslav Lobaev and is produced by his company as a piece on high-precision machines. The model bears the unofficial name “Twilight”, but the developer prefers another name option – “Mortal Memory”. The rifle weighs almost 10 kg and has a .408 Cheyenne Tactical caliber, with a bullet diameter of 10.3 x 77 mm and a cartridge length of almost 114 mm. The mass of a bullet for a given caliber usually ranges from 25 to 32 g. To shoot at a record distance, Lobaev slightly changed the shape of the bullet, making it more streamlined. Thus, the weight of the bullet that hit the target was 28 g.

During its existence (since 2005), Lobaev Arms has designed six models of rifles, including the SVLK-14S, which is a modification of the basic model of the SVL sniper rifle, created in 2009. Weapons produced by Lobaev Arms have repeatedly helped set world records in sniper shooting competitions in the benchrest discipline, where the accuracy with which weapon parts are made is especially important for effective shooting. The founders and team of the company profess a perfectionist approach to organizing technological processes, striving to achieve maximum accuracy when processing parts. According to Vyacheslav Lobaev, the current level of weapons production in the world makes it possible to hit targets at a distance of over two kilometers only “by luck.” According to Lobaev, he sees the mission of his company as creating high-precision weapons for which targeted shooting from such distances would be the norm.

The official world shooting range record so far is a shot by British Army soldier Craig Harrison, made from an L115A3 Long Range Rifle sniper rifle in 2009 in Afghanistan (during one of the combat clashes he managed to hit a target from a distance of 2475 meters). If Vyacheslav Lobaev’s shot from the SVLK-14S rifle is registered, then the book of world records will be replenished with a new sniper achievement.

Why such a high range?

It is known that during military operations, snipers work in positions no more than 2 km from targets. So why did the Russians make the range 4 km? And all this is due to the fact that Twilight can be used at a closer distance and the closer to the target, the more powerful the shot will be. Some snipers compared US and Russian snipers and admitted that now there are no equals to Twilight in the world, at least in terms of power.

We can say that the Dusk is now the leader among sniper rifles and bears this title honorably and, indeed, well deservedly.
