The Biathlon-7-5 sports pneumatic rifle of 4.5 mm caliber (.177) is intended for shooting in competitions and training at a distance of 10 m.
The Biathlon-7-5 rifle is a 4.5 mm pneumatic weapon with a muzzle energy of no more than 7.5 J.
Bullets for a rifle must be selected in such a way that they are securely held in the feeder sockets and provide acceptable loading force and dispersion parameters. When choosing a bullet, special attention must be paid to the internal shaping surface; it should have the shape of a cone.
The use of a bullet with an internal shaping surface in the form of a truncated cone, for example, as on bullets, leads to its inversion when chambered in the breech of the barrel, and as a result, the weapon is delayed.
The air sports rifle "Biathlon-7-5" consists of a barrel with a box; locking mechanism; trigger mechanism; stock assemblies; shops; sight; balloon.
On top of the box there is a base for installing and attaching the sight. At the base of the front sight, ring front sights of various sizes are installed. The locking mechanism is of the crank type with vertical axes of rotation. The trigger mechanism, using adjusting screws, allows you to adjust the trigger force, the nature of the descent and the travel of the trigger when the stock is separated from the rifle.
Rifle magazines for 5 and 1 bullets, interchangeable, are mounted in a clip. The sight is diopter, quick-detachable. The rifle is equipped with interchangeable diopters, front sights and a sight hood. The barrel and box are placed in the stock using special plastic. The design of the stock allows you to adjust the length of the butt and the cheek of the butt - in the vertical and horizontal directions.
The butt of the stock has a butt cap with height-adjustable hooks. On the fore-end of the stock there is a swivel base for securing the shoulder strap pad and a swivel bar on which the shooting sling swivel with a rotating ring is attached, thanks to which the shooting sling self-aligns in any position of the shooter’s hand. A cassette for attaching magazines is installed in the butt of the rifle.
Currently, the production center of Kalashnikov Concern OJSC produces the following versions of the sports pneumatic gas rifle: BI-7-5.Sb0-03 and BI-7-5.Sb0-04. By special order BI-7-5.Sb0-06 and BI-7-5.Sb0-07.
In accordance with Article 13 of the Federal Law of the Russian Federation “On Weapons”, a rifle can be acquired by citizens of the Russian Federation without a license and is not subject to registration with the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Of all types of winter sports, two are most often distinguished as the most spectacular. This is hockey and biathlon. The USSR, and then Russia, have always been proud of their merits and achievements in these sports. Take, for example, Kharlamov in hockey or Tikhonov (four-time Olympic champion) in biathlon. Everything is clear with a hockey player’s equipment - skates, stick, helmet. With biathlon, everything is much more interesting and attractive, since in fact it is a double sport - skiing and shooting. Regarding equipment for movement, everything is also clear: the main thing is to guess the lubricant according to the weather, but with a biathlete’s weapon, which is a rifle, everything is not so simple. The participant will have a difficult choice regarding the brand, since the result of successful shooting depends on this. Therefore, experienced athletes carefully select weapons. What does a biathlon rifle look like? Her photos will be presented to the reader later in the article. In the meantime, let’s take a short excursion into history and find out when and under what circumstances this type of sporting weapon appeared.
Accuracy International AW 50 and AS 50 large caliber sniper rifles
Accuracy International AW 50 and AS 50 large-caliber sniper rifles.
In 1997, the British company Accuracy International, known as the manufacturer of Arctic Warfare sniper rifles, registered in the city.
Oak Ridge (Tennessee, USA) North American subsidiary of Accuracy International North America Inc. (AINA), which sold rifles on the American market.
A year later, the company presented its new development: the AW 50F large-caliber rifle chambered for 12.7 mm caliber.
The new .50 caliber rifle had some success in the North American market. It was accurate and reliable, like all Accuracy International weapons, but it turned out to be massive. The weight of the AW 50F was 1.5 kg more than that of its main competitor, the Barrett M82 rifle.
In 2000, a modification was introduced under the designation AW 50FT. The "T" stands for titanium. Through the use of this material, it was possible to reduce the weight of the weapon. However, the use of such expensive material seriously affected the cost of the rifle.
Currently, it is the AW 50FT that tops the list of .50 Browning weapons in the Accuracy International catalogs. One of the latest developments from the British company is the AS 50 self-loading rifle of 12.7 mm caliber. It was first presented at the SHOT exhibition
Show 2005 in the USA.
The AS 50 is currently being tested by the US military to explore the possibility of equipping elite special forces snipers. In addition, AW 50 and AS 50 are supplied to the armed forces of Great Britain, Australia, Germany, Ireland, Thailand, and Portugal.
For the self-loading model AS 50, depending on the configuration, they demanded up to $25 thousand. At the same time, the price of Barrett rifles - the main competitor of Accuracy International products - on the North American market varied from 3 thousand to 7 thousand.
$ depending on model.
However, in the capacious arms market of the United States, as well as Europe, cost often emphasizes exclusivity and quality. Large-caliber sniper rifles from Accuracy International are highly accurate and effective elite weapons of one-piece production.
All parts are coated with an anti-corrosion compound and are immune to climatic influences. The weapon is easily disassembled and assembled in the field. The “floating” type barrel ensures high shot accuracy.
The receiver has a universal guide for mounting a wide range of optical devices for military or civilian purposes.
FROM WAR MEMOIRS AND ANALYTICS In a scientific documentary film with the self-explanatory title “Extraordinary Weapons. Sniper Rifles" (directed by Louis V. Say, 2011
, commissioned by the Discovery Channel), leading specialist of the Lothar WaLther company - one of the world's leading manufacturers of sniper weapons - John Fawcett talks about the AW 50 model: “The rifle was created with the SEALs in mind (submariners of the SEAL special forces unit. - Author) .
), so that it can be taken out of the water, assembled and immediately begin to engage a target at a distance of up to 1.5 km. It comes together in less than two minutes and requires only one screwdriver. This rifle does not care about dirt, sea water, silt, sand or snow; it can work in the harshest field conditions.
The bolt has special grooves to drain sand and water if shooting is carried out in the field. You just take the rifle, shake the water and sand out of it and open fire.”
Changing priorities
1978 is considered an important milestone in the development of biathlon. The transition to made this sport accessible and widespread. And the initiator of this significant event was the same German company, which, by order of its compatriots, designed such a weapon. Countries whose athletes were the best in this sport, namely the USSR, Norway, Finland and the USA, did not want to lose their positions in world biathlon and switch from military weapons to small-caliber ones.
Therefore, at the vote that was held with the aim of switching to a new caliber, there were not particularly ardent supporters of the new weapon. And then “political blackmail” was carried out by the Austrian side, which refused to hold the Biathlon World Championships in 1978 if the new weapon was not adopted. Three voters changed their original decision, and the scales tipped in favor of the new model.
Thus, the German manufacturer and athletes have become leaders in world biathlon, each in their own field. A unique standard for sporting weapons has been formed: the mass must be at least 3.5 kg, the caliber of a biathlon rifle must be 5.6 mm, better known as .22lr. The cartridges must be rimfire.
The consequence of the transition to small-caliber weapons was a decrease in the distance to the target - now it was 50 m. German biathletes won seven of the nine gold medals at the Biathlon World Championships in 1978, held under the new rules. The head coach of the USSR national team, Alexander Privalov, a former medalist of two Olympic Games, blamed the disastrous performance of the USSR national team not on a change in weapons, but on a new type of ski used and incorrectly selected lubricant.
Characteristics
The feeding mechanism is a replaceable magazine for 10 rounds with a staggered arrangement of cartridges. Optical sights - Hensoldt “Sight 90” 10x42 mm; Schmidt & Bender PM 10x42 mm, PM6x42 mm or variable magnification PM3-12x50M; Leupold Vari - X3.5x10 Tactical or Mark 4 series M1-10x, M1-16x, M3-10x. The stock is a chassis system based on bed-and-mount rail weapon technology; On an aluminum alloy chassis, the impact mechanism is secured with bolts and epoxy glue. The two-piece thumbhole stock panels are made from reinforced nylon (AW - green, AWP - black) and are held together using washers and custom head screws. Finish - barrel and receiver: green (AW), epoxy paint.
Accuracy International AW .338 LM
When shooting from a sniper rifle, a wide range of cartridges is used due to the fact that the rifle has a replaceable barrel made of stainless steel by cold forging. Arctic Warfare, Police, Folding: 7.62x51mm NATO (.308 Win); Magnum: .338 Lapua Magnum (8.60x70mm), .300 Win Mag, 7mm Rem Mag; super magnum: .50BMG. Technically, it is a 5-shot (.308 caliber) bolt-action rifle. When firing, cartridges are supplied from detachable box magazines with a capacity of 5 or 10 rounds. Overall, it is a top-class, high-precision tactical rifle that has proven itself to work reliably in the most difficult conditions in various armies around the world. Depending on the cartridge and barrel, it provides accuracy from 0.4 to 0.7 MOA. That is, when using some cartridges, the basic AW model places five shots from one hundred meters in a circle from 11.6 to 20.3 mm.
Course for modernization and improvement
After the 1960 Winter Olympics, weapons designer Sherstyakov, using the Mosin rifle as a basis, produced a new weapon for biathlon. The resulting sample was produced in two versions and had names depending on the caliber: “Biathlon Bi-7.62” and “Biathlon Bi-6.5” (their cartridges had dimensions of 7.62 mm and 6.5 mm respectively).
The use of this particular weapon brought Soviet biathletes their first Olympic successes, in particular, Vladimir Melanin was able to win the first gold medal in biathlon in 1964 at the Winter Olympics in Innsbruck.
In the early seventies, the production of the new Biathlon Bi-4 rifle began, which was fired with rimfire cartridges. The model had significantly less weight. The next new product was released just a year after the release of the previous one and was called “Biathlon Bi-5”. The shooting was carried out with central firing cartridges of 5.6 mm caliber. It was with this rifle that the victorious golden march of four-time Olympic champion Alexander Tikhonov began.

An adequate response to rule changes
Gunsmiths and designers at Izhmash (Izhevsk Machine-Building Plant) urgently presented a new Biathlon Bi-6 rifle, which is used in accordance with the new requirements.
The secret of such a rapid release of new weapons is explained quite trivially: just as in the early 60s, using the basis of the Mosin rifle, the Biathlon Bi-7.62 and Biathlon Bi-6.5 samples were developed, so in this time the designers took the ready-made versions of “Ural-5-1” and “Ural-6-1” and, through deep modernization, created the “Biathlon Bi-6”.
Accuracy International AS50 sniper rifle
The AS50 is a new development from the popular British manufacturer Accuracy International Ltd. For the first time, the model was presented at the world presentation of weapons ShotShow-2005 in America.
Description
The Accuracy International AS50 is a large caliber automatic rifle designed for use by special forces. The self-loading model fires at a range of up to 2 km.
The AS50 rifle is unpretentious in operation. It works reliably and properly in difficult environmental conditions, including mud and sand.
Design
The automation of a sniper rifle operates by using part of the powder gases, which are removed from the barrel channel. The tube and piston of the gas release mechanism are located above the barrel. The barrel channel is locked by tilting the bolt.
The steel barrel is made in a free-floating design. To prevent tossing during a shot, the model is equipped with a powerful compensator brake with two chambers. A successful design allows you to dampen recoil and flash of a shot, as well as prevent dust from being raised when shooting in a prone position.
On top of the receiver there is a Picatinny rail for placing sniper scopes of various modifications. On the left is the two-position safety lever. The rear is equipped with a rubber butt pad.
Under the butt there is a folding handle, which can be used if additional support is needed. The aluminum forend has guides for mounting various equipment.
Underneath is a lightweight and durable bipedal folding bipod that allows the rifle to rotate in any direction.
In this case, there is no possibility of adjusting the height of the position, but the weapon is securely and stably fixed in the position chosen for shooting.
The accuracy international as50 can be disassembled into its component parts in three minutes. This significantly increases the comfort of its transportation and maintenance.
Shooting is carried out with rifle cartridges. Ammunition is stored in detachable box magazines.
The AC rifle is equipped with an optical sight and lens.
Performance characteristics
The sniper rifle has excellent technical characteristics that make it possible to reliably hit a target at long distances. The ease and speed of assembly and disassembly allow the sniper to bring the weapon into combat readiness with lightning speed.
Detailed performance characteristics:
- Weight without cartridges, kg - 14.1
- Caliber, mm - 12.7x99
- Sighting range, km — 2
- Length, mm — 1369
- Firing speed - 5 shots in 1.6 seconds.
- Ammunition flight speed, m/s - 980
- Magazine capacity, pcs. - 5
- Barrel length, mm - 692
AS50 rifle facts
It is the main type of weapon for special forces of the USA, Great Britain and the Irish Republic. Thanks to its high accuracy of fire and sighting range, the accuracy international AS50 is one of the ten best sniper rifles of our time.
Shutter design
Each company that produces sporting rifles develops and produces weapons with its own bolt design. The German company uses a shutter whose design was developed back in 1935, constantly improving it.
Until 1984, all weapons of this brand were produced using a design with a rotating mechanism. After 1984, gunsmith P. Fortner installed a bolt action on the rifle without warning, and this design is used on all models to this day. A distinctive feature of these devices is their more compact size and the absence of lugs required for powerful cartridges.
Reloading the rifle is done very simply, with two fingers: by pulling the handle with your index finger, the bolt is cocked, and its reverse action is carried out by pressing the back of the mechanism with your thumb. Also, the reliability of the weapon during reloading is influenced by the ejector and extractor, which, due to their design, reliably perform their functions at low air temperatures.
Individual versions
AWP (Arctic Warware Police) - a cheaper version of AW for police units. The main difference is simplified processing of metal parts and the use of only .308Win and .243Win calibers in a 24” barrel.
AE/AE Mk III is the most affordable version of AW. The stock has become lighter and thinner, the bolt group has been simplified and there is no left-handed version.
AWS – version with integrated silencer. It was developed for subsonic .308Win cartridges for silent shooting at a distance of up to 300 m. In terms of shot sound level, the rifle corresponds to .22LR cartridges.
All AW rifles have a pre-installed Picatinny rail base on which Picatinny/Weaver rings and brackets can be installed.

Weapons of competitors
Not only in the Soviet Union they knew how to make weapons for biathlon. Foreign manufacturers should also be noted. The most famous are “Walter” from Germany, “Sako” of Finnish production and the Austrian “Stayer Mannlicher”.
The most famous and promoted biathlon rifles are “Anschutz”. It was to the management of this company that the German army biathlon team approached with a request to develop a rifle for biathlon, which would completely suit German athletes according to such criteria as convenience and recoil force. Thus, to create a new weapon, they used the best one at that time, Antschutz-54, improving it for a low-pulse central ignition cartridge with a caliber of 222.
Accuracy International AW50 large-caliber sniper rifle
In the late 90s of the twentieth century, the British arms company Accuracy International LTD received an order from the British Ministry of Defense and the Australian Armed Forces to develop and produce a .50 caliber rifle (12.7x99 mm) for Her Majesty's Special Airborne Service and special forces of the Australian Army.
The new rifle was presented to customers already in 2000 and, after extensive testing, was put into service under the commercial designation AW50.

Despite the name, the AW50 is not just a modification of the already world-famous AW (Arctic Warfare) series of sniper rifles.
The design of the carrier tire and bolt group did not provide the rigidity and safety margin necessary for firing powerful .50 BMG caliber cartridges, so the design of the new rifle was started almost from scratch.
The rifle barrel is cantilevered and equipped with a removable muzzle brake-compensator. To effectively cool and reduce the total weight of both the weapon and the barrel, longitudinal valleys are cut on the outer surface of the barrel; in the HB (heavy barrel) modification, the barrel is devoid of valleys and has a constant chamber diameter of 39 mm.
The supporting tire of the new rifle was expanded in the area of the receiver, which gave the necessary structural rigidity, as well as the ability to install a receiver of the required size. Some rifle samples received titanium tires instead of aluminum ones; such modifications are designated “T”.
The massive receiver has thick walls to withstand high loads when firing .50 BMG ammunition, and thanks to its relatively larger size than the original AW series, it accommodates a new 30 mm bolt stem. The receiver is installed on the weapon tire in the same way as on the original AW series rifles.
The new bolt received six lugs in the front part in the image of the bolt group of AW rifles for Magnum family ammunition, the bolt stem is covered with valleys to reduce weight, as well as to facilitate turning in icing and dirty conditions.
The rear part of the bolt underwent the greatest processing, which lost the static fuse block, which in turn was moved to the receiver of the rifle, and the fuse boxes have only two positions: “S” (safe) - safe, in which the trigger mechanism and the bolt stem are blocked and “F” (fire) – fire. The safety flags are located on both sides of the receiver.
The bolt group and safety box of the Accuracy International AW50 large-caliber sniper rifle
The position of the safety catch makes it possible to operate it with your thumb without lifting your hand from the fire control handle.
From the AW series, parts of the nylon linings on the stock were borrowed, which cover the supporting rail in the front of the stock and form the fire control handle and the butt, which received a shock-absorbing butt plate, an adjustable cheekpiece and a monopod.
The design of the butt plate and monopod allows you to absorb part of the recoil without transferring it to the shooter’s shoulder, and also maintain stability of the weapon during recoil from the shot
The rear of the Accuracy International AW50 large-caliber sniper rifle
There are no mechanical sighting devices. The weapon is equipped with any optical, night, electro-optical and other sights at the customer’s request thanks to a Picatinny rail mounted on the upper edge of the receiver.
For transportation over significant distances, the weapon is placed in the included special aluminum weapon case in a partially disassembled form (the sight and bolt group are separated), while the stock is folded to the side.
A little history
At the end of the Second World War, the most popular competitions were military patrols; in essence, this was the prototype of modern biathlon. The equipment at that time was ordinary army combat equipment, which also included a bayonet-knife. By the way, they were also in service with the Soviet army during the war with Germany.
After much debate by the International Olympic Committee, the long-awaited debut of biathletes at the Winter Olympics took place in 1960. For Soviet athletes at the experimental production he produced the Biathlon-59 rifle. The sight of a biathlon rifle at that time was diopter. It was also equipped with carrying straps and a special protective case. The weight of a biathlon rifle was not strictly regulated at that time.
Exhaust sniper rifle: characteristics (performance characteristics) of a special, large-caliber VSSK
Studying the experience of local conflicts led to an understanding of the need to be armed with large-caliber sniper weapons with increased stealth and compactness. Many countries around the world have developed their own versions of such rifles.
Russian gunsmiths were no exception and created the VSSK “Vykhlop” sniper complex, which is not inferior, and in some ways superior to its foreign counterparts.
History of creation
In 2002, the development of the VSSK Vykhlop sniper complex was completed. The order for the creation of a rifle was issued by the Special Purpose Center (TsSN) of the FSB of Russia.
Three years later, in 2005, the Central Design Bureau for Hunting and Sporting Weapons, under the leadership of Vladimir Viktorovich Zlobin in Tula, showed its brainchild at the Interpolitech exhibition in Moscow.
Recognition from specialists did not come immediately. It took almost ten years to realize all the advantages of the VSSK and put it into service with the FSB and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, as well as export it to the Syrian Arab Republic.
Description of VSSK "Exhaust"
In order to reduce the size of the rifle, the developers used a bullpup layout. To prevent arbitrary opening of the shutter, the handle is equipped with two keys. They, the keys, securely hold it in the forward position.
The plastic stock is combined with a handle, like the Austrian assault rifle AUG-77. The butt plate is adjustable only in the vertical plane.
The sighting device is similar to the one on the AKM and folds up.
The safety lock securely blocks the firing pin and is located on the left. The magazine latch is flush with the body.
The bipod folds and can be adjusted in height. The integrated muffler (PBBS) is removable for carrying in a plastic case or cleaning. The receiver is equipped with a rail for mounting a night or optical (Zeiss 3-12×56 Tactical Hensoldt) sight. The mil-dot sight reticle is illuminated.
It was not possible to make the rifle completely silent. It is positioned as low noise. The sound when fired reaches 120 dB. This is relatively little. In addition to reducing the sound, the BBBS dampens the flash of a shot.
Ammunition for VSSK "Vykhlop"
The following ammunition was specially developed for the sniper complex:
- Cartridge STs-130 PT, intended for defeating lightly armored vehicles and manpower equipped with personal protective equipment, jacketed bimetallic bullet;
- Cartridge STs-130 PT 2, the cartridge is designed to accurately hit a target not equipped with personal protective equipment, bronze bullets are made mechanically, using grinding and turning;
- The STs-130 VPS cartridge is used to destroy the enemy in army-level PPE and destroy lightly armored vehicles. Bullet of high armor penetration, with a tandem core;
- Training cartridge STs-130 PU.
With a heavy bullet, the case is designed to be shortened and the amount of gunpowder is reduced. This achieves a low threshold for the initial velocity of the bullet, down to the speed of sound - this is necessary for the correct operation of the integrated silencer.
Penetration and high accuracy of fire also depend on the weight distribution and quality of the gunpowder.
For a PT bullet weighing 59 gr. the angular deviation at one hundred meters does not exceed 25 mm, PT-2 no more than 10 mm, the VPS bullet penetrates a sheet of steel up to 16 mm thick from two hundred meters.
TTX vssk "exhaust"
It would be appropriate to consider the tactical and technical characteristics of the complex in comparison with the best foreign models of this class. For convenience, the data is summarized in the table below.

Sighting range, m: | 1850 | 2000 | 600 |
Type of ammunition: | 10-round box magazine | detachable box magazine for 5 rounds | detachable box magazine for 5 rounds |
Advantages and disadvantages of VSSK "Vykhlop"
Advantages:
- High lethality;
- High accuracy;
- Good sighting range;
- High armor-piercing;
- Light weight;
- The bipod when folded does not protrude from the stock;
- Low noise level when fired.
Flaws:
- Low rate of fire;
- Strong recoil;
- The massiveness of the body.
Low-noise and flameless, capable of hitting manpower behind cover, penetrating bulletproof vests of the 5th protection class at a distance of 600 meters, this rifle is unique in its kind and is a worthy competitor to all world analogues.
Other valve designs
The Finns first used a new shutter design in their Finnbiathlon model, produced by Tampeeren Asepaja. The mechanism had a longitudinally sliding stroke and did not need to be turned.
Following them, the Bi-7 biathlon rifle also appeared in the Soviet Union, the bolt of which has the same design. It is impossible not to note the merits of the outstanding weapons designer Susloparov. In a short time, he was able to prepare the Bi-7-2 prototype for the Olympic Games in Moscow, which continued the development of sports weapons of the most famous Biathlon series. Speaking at the Olympics with a new model, the already well-known one won his fourth Olympic gold medal in the relay race. By the way, at the next two Winter Olympics, biathletes from the Soviet Union used this particular rifle to take gold in the relay race.

Calico M951S
After domestic samples, it’s time to move to the USA, where in 1990 the Calico M951S rifle was developed, which perfectly hits targets at medium distances. Its features include a high rate of fire and an extremely capacious magazine that can hold up to 100 rounds. Which, however, is not surprising, since the model was created on the basis of the Calico M960 submachine gun.
